Speaker 2 (00:28):
Him right here.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Joining us now on You've Got Mail is the one
and only Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Christian, how are you doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Doing great?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
I've have me on of course.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
First things first, I want to congratulate you. You were
just announced as the forty nine ers nominee for the
Salute to Service Award, a huge honor that recognizes everything
you've done for the military community through your initiative. So
tell me how it feels to receive an award and
be recognized in that way.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Yeah, it's an honor, I think. You know, as professional athletes,
we have such great platforms to give back to the
community in the middle Terry's been something that I've had,
you know, an affinity for really my whole life, and
so to be honest, that way is awesome. It's exciting
because you know, more eyes to foundations means you know,
more visibility and more money going to great causes that
(01:15):
can help people.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, exactly, And I have to say the surprise was
great for those who haven't seen it. Can you share
what went down from your perspective? I know George was
in on it. Were you like confused when you saw
him on the zoom screen?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
You know there's always something with George, but anytime he's
in on something, he does it big.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
And it was so much fun. Huge onreing.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
I know, he's somebody that gives a lot of his time,
of his effort, of his money back to the community.
So to receive, you know, to receive that honor from
him means a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Yeah, You've dedicated a lot of time over the years
supporting the military community.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
I want to know where does that connection come from
for you?
Speaker 4 (01:51):
I think for me, you know, growing up in Colorado,
you know, I'm right next to the Air Force base,
have a lot of buddies who went to Air Force
or went to Army, or went to Navy, whatever may be,
and so you know, it was always just instilled in
us that you know, we're playing football, playing basketball, playing
baseball growing up. You know, there's people who are sacrificing
everything from you know, their lives to limbs to you know,
(02:13):
time away from their families, and then all the stuff
that comes after they return home from war, you know,
with the mental challenges and the emotional challenges that come
with it, let alone the physical ones. So it just
always been something I've been very appreciative of and gotten
to spend a lot of time with, you know, active
duty military members and veterans, and it always amazes me
how inspiring those guys are.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
I mean you've said it with your twenty three and
Troops initiative that you want these veterans to receive the
same quality of care that athletes do, so that means
top of the line treatment. What does that look like
in action?
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:45):
So it also you know, for me, it started when
I read a stat that said twenty two veterans commit
suicide every day, and that hit me hard.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
That's every day.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
Yeah, And you know I thought, man, I wonder how
I could make a difference and chopping that number down
and hopefully getting it to zuo eventually, And you know,
As a football player, we take such great care of
our bodies. You know, it's twenty four to seven on
the clock, you know, especially with stuff with you know,
your head and neck and all the different stuff that
come with that, and so I thought, you know, my
(03:15):
goal initially was, let me try to provide all the
stuff that professional athletes get and give those to the military.
And you know, we have such a great team of
people here at the NINERS who help take care of you,
but there's only so many hours in the day and
there's one hundred guys that they have to treat, and
so it is the onus is a lot of times
on the athlete to go out and get that outside care.
And I've learned that that's very similar in the military,
(03:36):
where when you're done, it's not that people don't want
to help, because there's a million foundations that want to help,
it's just finding the right ones and really understanding what
it is that they need. And so with my initiative,
we put them through basically a nine month trial run
where we do blood work panels, full body mriyes, functional scans.
We try to find every metric we can that's going
(03:58):
on with these guys. These men, women and figure out
exactly what's wrong. And when you know what's wrong and
you know the data and you can kind of take
a look under the car, it's I don't want to
say easier, but you can take a step in the
right direction figure out exactly how you want to help
these people.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
And so that's what we do.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
It takes a long time, you know, it's it's not
an overnight thing. You know, it's one thing I've realized.
It's very difficult and it's there's not an easy fix.
But I think just continuing to, you know, just stack
the time and the effort one by one, one day
at a time, hopefully we can get some great results.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, I mean, I do have to say that this
care is very intentional, so your recognition is very well deserved.
I want to transition to another important role that you have,
and that's the role of being a dad. You and Olivia,
welcome to baby Collette over you know, the beginning of
the season during the off season right there. Congratulations on that.
How does Field being a dad?
Speaker 3 (04:53):
It's amazing. Yeah, it's the best thing in the world.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
I think, you know, it's it's tough to explain, but
you know, just coming home after a long day, whether
it was good or bad, it just it takes all
of the past away from you and you get to
focus on spending some time with her, and it's it's
it's so much fun.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
It's been so.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Cool watching Olivia become a mom and seeing how much
she loves it, and man, it's just it's such a blessing.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Yeah, you've mentioned in the past that you've always wanted
to be a dad, So is there anything that surprised
you about fatherhood so far?
Speaker 4 (05:21):
I didn't, you know, I think nothing's surprising, and it
really is a blessing. I mean it, I didn't realize
how much I'd love it. You know, I new i'd
like it. But you know, even the hard times, you know,
she you know, whether it's difficult or not, it's you
just learn to appreciate that so much. And watching her
grow every day, you know, it happens so quickly, and
so I'm just trying to appreciate this time because you know,
(05:42):
i know it goes by quickly.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, you've said recently that watching collect notice things brings
you so much stoy. Is there any other little milestones
that she's hit that you've been really surprised about.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Yeah, she's making a lot of noises, you know, just
when she smiles at you, when she laughs, she's starting
to almost roll over. I could tell she wants to walk,
which she can't yet. But that's just all the little things,
you know. It's like, you know, it's amazing watching her
grow and how quickly it's happening. So yeah, again, just
(06:12):
feel so grateful.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Well, while we're on the topic, I'm going to ask
you if you rapid fire dad theme questions, So just
your first instinct, are you ready?
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yep?
Speaker 1 (06:21):
How long did it take you to change your first
diaper versus how long does it take you now?
Speaker 4 (06:27):
I took my time on the first one. I changed
her first diaper actually in the hospital. I didn't have
a clock on it. I figured that was the warm
up session. But now I'm pretty good. I do it
pretty quickly, but I'm definitely not as quick as my
wife or my mom or her mom or anybody else,
just because I take my time. I want to make
sure I get it right.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
She's nice and comfortable.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Which teammate would you most trust to watch baby Collette
babysit her?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
That's a good question. I think Juice would do a
good job. Okay, I think he did.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
He doesn't have kids, risk, but I think he would
do a good job.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
I trust him.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I feel like the trusty answer is like a John
Weeks of Thomas Morristeat because.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
My initial thought was Thomas, because he's got so many kids,
and you know, he's talked about it. He's always like,
you need to enjoy this time. It happens so quickly,
and so he can appreciate this time. But I got
to go with my dog.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, yeah, of course he's a vent in the dad game.
But Jews sounds like a great babysitter. Well, while we're
talking about the talents outside of football, because you're a
very musical household with you, Olivia, everyone in there got
a lot of talents. One of them is that you
play piano. So I'm going to paint a picture. Halloween
is over, the holidays are coming up, so we're going
to create a band out of guys in the locker room.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Are you ready to put it together?
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah? I'm ready.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Sweet, So obviously you're on the piano, but let's build
the rest of the band.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Who is the lead singer?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Lead singer? Uh, lead singer. Do we have anybody that
can sing?
Speaker 2 (07:56):
I mean, who do you think would give it the
best shot? Who's always singing? Maybe in the locker.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
George would commit the best honors. And he's he's got
the charisma and the aura around him where he would
draw a crowd. So I'd go George.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
George is the lead singer, who's on the drums.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
On the drums, I'd have to go my dog, Juwan Jennings.
I feel like Jawan would kill it on the drums.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Nice Juwan. We've got now the guitarist.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Guitarist, I go Chase Lucas. Okay, I just want chasing.
My band's got the best energy.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
All right, we'll close it out with the performance. Who's
choreographing the dancing for like a music video of this band?
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Kendrick Bourne, He answered Kabe on stage, he'd have the
whole crowd doing something.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
This is fun.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Okay, So you're playing piano, George is the lead singer,
Chase Lucas the guitarist, who's on the drums. Again, Joan's
on the drums, and then Kab's choreographing at all.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
What's the name of this group? What's the name of
the album.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
I don't know. You put me on the spot.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
I haven't thought about this, but uh, oh man, I
don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I probably call it nine Game or.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Something for now, I gotta pick of something more creative.
I haven't thought about a name. O.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Good, We'll get there, all right. Let's transition over to
some fan questions. The Faithful submitted some questions directly for you, Christian.
First one up is what music do you recommend on
game day?
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Oh, that's tough.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
I always I like listening to gospel music on game day,
especially you know, on Sundays early in the morning kind
of get my mind right, and then after that anything
with a big beat, you know. So there's a lot
of like EDM or house music that I like is
try to get in the fast mindset.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Awesome. What are some of your go tos recently that
the Faithful could put on their playlist?
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Oh? Man, honestly, it's so random. I used to have
on on Spotify my pregame year two playlists, and I
would come up with it before the season and I'd
shuffle it and that would those would be my songs.
And in my ninth year, I've just I've run out
of songs. I'm like, I just hear the same songs
over so I really it's more of a whatever I'm
feeling in that day. Yeah, recent like last game, I
(10:04):
listened to Electric Feel by MGMT like thirty five times
in a row.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
I don't know why, you just put it on. So
I was feeling that day and I just repeated it.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
And then you know, when you get a win and
you play that song that you were listening to before,
it's kind of comes full circle.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
It was.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
That was a good one.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
I love it bookending the game with a really good song.
What's your favorite holiday?
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I like Christmas.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
It's not a better holiday.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah, Christmas. Were playing Niner Gang by the Christian McCaffrey.
George Kittle Jennings fan.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Now, this fan says, after seeing your dig lit drawing,
who is your Pokemon? Are you a Pokemon kind of guy?
Speaker 4 (10:39):
My my older brother is a big Pokemon guy. I
played a little bit growing up, but I just know
the basic ones. Okay, who would be my Pokemon? I
was like Blast Toys, Big Turtle with the like cannons.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
I'm sure George geeks out over that stuff.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Yeah, they play like on the plane they'll play.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Fun Now, this question I thought was really funny how
the fan wrote it out. It says, how did the
entire bloodline make it to the NFL? What's the secret?
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Because you your brother, your.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Dad, what was the secret sauce growing up in that
McCaffrey family.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
That's a good question.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Probably my mom my mom's cooking. Yeah, it was, yeah,
homemade meals from from Mama Lisa. Now, I don't know,
I think that's not an easy answer. It's it's there's
so much that goes into you know. I got to say,
you know, every day, I feel so grateful for my parents.
You know, they did such a great job, and having
four boys is tough, but I just feel really blessed
and fortunate for my my parents and my brothers because
(11:34):
we were so tight knit. You know, we did everything together.
We played multiple sports growing up, we all kind of
beat to the same drum, and it was just it
was a lot of fun growing up in that household.
And you know, you always say like, you don't know
when you're in the good old days until you've actually
left them. And I look back on my childhood and
you know, snow football days and playing basketball in the driveway,
whatever it was, we did it together. And I'm just
(11:56):
you know, having good people around you, having you know,
great friends that we had that are still our best
friends to this day. I think it's all about the
people you surround yourself with in the community that you have.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
You know, it's not one thing.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
It's not like you know, obviously the hard work and
all that stuff is great, but I think, you know,
just all of us doing everything together was such an important,
you know, pivotal role in our childhood.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah, community is so important. Well, Christian, that's all we've
got for you on You've got mail today. Thank you
so much for joining the podcast.
