Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome back to You've Got Mail, presented by Delta Dental.
I'm your forty nine Ers team reporter Brionna Janelle and
in today's episode, we're sitting down with offensive linemen Dominic Pooney.
In this episode, he shares his Midwest roots and talks
about his journey to becoming a ligneman. We play a
few fun games and answer questions directly from the faithful.
Check out my conversation with Dominic Pooney right here. What's up,
(00:29):
Dominic Pooney? How are you welcome to the podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
I'm good, I'm good. Thanks for having me. I'm excited
to be here.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I'm excited to chat with you. Have the fans get
to know you a little bit more. Let's start all
the way from the beginning. You grew up in Missouri
and spend a lot of time in your football journey
in the Midwest. How did you describe Midwest football culture
compared to the West coast.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Midwest football culture. It's, man, I don't even really how
to explain it. I mean, it's normal football. I don't
really know how football is out here. I already knows
the NFL, so I mean, to me, it's really the
same like I don't really see too many differences. Maybe
from like a like a cultural perspective, like it's a
little different. It's a little more swag on the West
Coast than in the Midwest. But yeah, for the most part,
(01:12):
it's pretty much the same.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
With there not being too much a difference when it
comes to football. What about life, because you live in
the Bay Area now it's your second year, are you
proud of being from the Midwest and do you think
it shaped you into the person you are today?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Definitely, Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
I love being from Missouri, being from the Midwest, just
you know, like how people are out there, you know,
the mannerisms they have, just the hospitality. Coming out here
to the West Coast is a whole different It's really
a whole different world, honestly. I mean it's a big
adjustment obviously, just living and being near the ocean. I
love that part. The weather out here is a lot
better than the Midwest. I will say, you know, it's
(01:46):
always like seventy to eighty and then it'll drop down
to sixty and it's mostly Sunday every day. So I mean,
I really love the weather part out here, and I
love the people out here and just being near the ocean.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I gotta say, do you take advantage of being on
the coast.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Yeah, visiting ocean Big sur is like my favorite part.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
It's stunning, right, Yeah. It feels like it's straight out.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Of a movie. It is, No, it really is.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
I can't believe. It's like it seems like it'd be
in like Jamaica or something.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
It's pretty crazy that it's like just down the road. Well,
you came from a really athletic family. Your dad played football,
your mom played volleyball, your brother's played Also, what's it
like growing up in that kind of a household.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
That's competitive for sure, Yeah, but it's also inspiring. I mean,
being the youngest, I was always like, you know, the
one getting picked on. I was never as good as
them at sports obviously, just being like being little. And
but you know, just my dad's background in football, my
mom background and all the sports she played, and just
growing up seeing how my sister played basketball, both my
brothers played football, basketball, baseball. It just made me want
(02:46):
to do everything that I could. And you know, seeing
my oldest brother, you know, he actually got a shot
in the league, and I'm just him putting on a jersey,
like NFL jersey. That was probably really like what most
inspired me to, you know, make it to the NFL,
and like kind of showed a path of how you
can do it.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
That's awesome. You saw it, so you felt like you
could do it.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, exactly, that's really cool.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
I also learned that your dad coached you when you
were younger when it comes to football. What's a lesson
that he drilled into you really early that still sticks
with you when you're on an NFL practice.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Field, Never take a playoff. He was always so hard.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
He was harder on me than anybody else on the team.
And you know, at the time I hated it, but
you know, growing up, it's just like now I see why.
He was just pushing me to be the best I can.
And anytime I was lazy on the field, you know,
he would not be afraid to yell at me.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
So that's the biggest lesson I would take.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
So you're happy you had a dad who was also
a coach, A coach who's also a dad.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah yeah, looking back on it, yes.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Yeah, a moment maybe maybe not, but now, yeah, that's sweet. Well,
you also played volleyball and ran track in high school.
What do you think those sports taught you when it
comes to being an alignment.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I threw shot put for like a month, okay, so
I don't know if I count track, okay.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
But volleyball I played for three years.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
It definitely taught me, like I think, a lot of
agility and hand eye coordination and just like the timing
of everything. But volleyball was a blast, Like I loved it,
so you know, I had no regrets with that. But yeah,
just from an agility of perspective, I think.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
It helped out a lot.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
When you switched over from volleyball to football, was O
line the first position you played.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
No growing up, I always was a defensive end. That
was like my favorite spot to play. And then you know,
when I got to college, like going getting ready to
go to college, I just knew like I didn't have
I wasn't quick enough and wasn't like explosive enough to
just get off the edge. So you know, I had
to go to O line, you know, And I mean
I was I wasn't happy at the time, but you know,
I'm glad it paid off for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
I mean, it took you all the way to the NFL. Yeah,
I'm sure, we're happy. Now, Well, let's talk about college.
Random fact you majored in criminal justice. What drew you
to that major?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
My brothers?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yeah, you know, I really didn't know what I wanted
to do in college, and I saw my brothers do
criminal justice, and you know, I was like why not?
And ultimately and stuck with it.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Any cool things you learned from being in that major.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
There's a lot, but it's it's been a while, so
it's allover.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
It's also heavy, heavy subjects. Yeah, well, when did it
hit you during your time in college that you had
what it took to play in the NFL?
Speaker 3 (05:12):
When I transferred to Kansas and like so I was
started a Division two and that after four years transferred
to Kansas really like the first practice of like fall camp,
you know, I had like a good rep and I
was like, oh, I can play with these guys, you know,
And after that it just kind of like kept going up.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
And I think that was the moment.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
And you mentioned in the past that you always wanted
to shout out those smaller school guys. What advice would
you give players from smaller programs dreaming of being at
your level in the NFL?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (05:40):
You got to work twice as hard as the guys
that are already above you, like on the power five level.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
That's ultimately what it took.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
I was just working out with one of my teammates, Corbyn,
and you know, we just took it to another level.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
And that was the summer.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Really elevated like my body, my diet, everything, and it's
just like it propelled me for I think even till now.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
So yeah, you really got to work twice. It's hard.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
That's really cool, really good advice. Now, you had that
sort of come to life moment during that time in
college when you went over to Kansas. But now you're
in year two in the NFL. What was your I
made it or welcome to the NFL moment.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Oh, I don't know if I had a welcome to
the NFL moment, but I know Week one we played
the Jets on Monday Night Football, and it was like
my first start is a rookie and you know.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
There's a lot of anxiety and like build up to it.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
What a way to start in primetime.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah, some guys would preferred just like the first slot
games like the one PM or the twelve, but you
know where it's one of the best d lines in
the league on Monday night?
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Why not?
Speaker 3 (06:43):
So yeah, that was probably after that game, I was like,
all right, now I can play ball here.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
You think that moment got you ready and set you
up for the rest of your career here in the Bay, I.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Do, I do. Yeah, that was a big game.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Yeah, the pressure really sometimes makes the stars really shy.
So take me into this forty nine ers oh line.
Do you guys have any traditions or superstitions now that
we're at week eleven in the season now, Oh.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
I mean we'll do we in fall camp, we always
do our big like dinner usually the rookies pay for.
From a tradition perspective, I mean we always just like
decorate the room every holiday. So every Christmas are a
white elephant and everyone gets a gift for each other.
But there's like a minimum price that you have to meet.
So yeah, that's probably my favorite one.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
That's fun. So I'm assuming there's some Thanksgiving decore around
the room right now.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Yes, Thanksgiving, but some guys are pushing for Christmas already.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Yeah, how some people.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Get I need to hear your thoughts. Do you put
up the Christmas to core before after Thanksgiving after after right,
you have to give Thanksgiving its moment. Yes, I'm not
gonna lie. There might be a few Christmas decorations in
my apartment room already it's light though the tree is
not up.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
But like my music, not not yet, maybe like a.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Soft jazz, not Christmas music, not Christmas music, but something
that'll put you in the mood.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Okay, I love it.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Okay, So I'm assuming you're a fan of Drew Ski
just from your Instagram? Does that mean you're the comedian
of the O Line group?
Speaker 2 (08:10):
No, I'm not the comedian.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Who is?
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Who is?
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Ben Bart is a comedian? Uh? Drake Nugent is hilarious.
Oh I'll go with those two for sure.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Okay, sweet, Well, if Drewski were to do with skit
in the forty nine ers locker room, who would you
want him to impersonate?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Oh? On the whole team or the old line.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Let's talk O Line.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
I think mckivitz would be the funniest one.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
So Drewski acting as mckivitz. Yeah, what does he need
to do? If you're teaching Drew Ski, he's in the
locker room, this is what you need to do to
nail the part.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Uh. He needs to come in the locker room and
just yell out hey Bud as long as loud as
you can, and just dressing camouflage and you know, wear
boots and just you know, give people a hard time
all the time, but you know it's all love.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yea, Yeah, the hay bud, that's the big one for
a cold.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Now, we are going to play a little game. Are
you ready? It's called Pooney's Protection Plan. I'm going to
name off a few questions and just get your first answers.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Are you ready?
Speaker 2 (09:09):
All right?
Speaker 1 (09:10):
So you're protecting your piece? What's one thing you do
to unwind?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Play two K two knaw NBA.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
Two K nice? Who's your team or do you build
your own?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
I use my mind player going to wreck, playing the
wreck with my guys.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
Fun.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
All right, you're protecting your team. What's one thing fans
don't see that makes this group very special?
Speaker 2 (09:27):
About the old line? The whole team right now? His team,
the camaraderie.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
I mean, this is probably I don't know how other
NFL teams are, and I remember last year, but this
this team just feels like very connected and there's a
lot of friendship going around, and you know, we feel
very close to each other.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
So it's real fun. Like we're having a lot of
fun playing together.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
It's a brotherhood.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Yeah, brotherhood.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
That's sweet.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
All right. You're protecting your lore. What's one thing fans
would be surprised to learn about you?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Usually I go with the volleyball in high school?
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Okay, playing volleyball, Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
What position did you play?
Speaker 2 (09:59):
I was outside?
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Nice?
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Nice? All right.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
You're protecting your plate. What's your ultimate comfort meal?
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Spaghetti?
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Nice?
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Or I have a got I like spaghetti, a burger, lasagna, steak.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Like I don't have one?
Speaker 4 (10:15):
No, no, no, just do you do it all?
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Take a little bit of this, a little bit of that.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Not at once, but it just depends what I'm going
to move for. But I love food.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Yeah, no, I hear you.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
All right.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
You're protecting your vibe. What's one song that's always on
your playlist?
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Oh, like I get my car and I'm playing the
song like first.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
It's it's always one that you could fall back on.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
I'll probably go with like road Wave, like twenty five
twenty five by Roadway.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
No, I just love that song.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Nice. You're protecting your culture. What's your favorite Polynesian food?
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Uh, my dad always makes us.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
He makes like the chop suey good. That's real good.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Your dad's a good cook.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
He's good at that.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
He had this specialty.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
He's got three to four that he's mastered.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
I love it. Now you're protecting your routine. What's a
hobby or must do things that you always make space for,
no matter how busy things get.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Like in life or like in life, something I always
make time for.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah, video games?
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Video games to unwind. Nice, last couple, you're protecting your
home turf. What's something from the Midwest you wish you
could bring out here to California?
Speaker 4 (11:27):
My family, that's easy.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
How often are they able to come out and see
your games?
Speaker 3 (11:32):
I think they've been out here three or four times
this season. Nice, it's been a good fair share.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Sweet, you get a little taste of home. Now you're
protecting your inner child. What would younger poony think if
he saw you now?
Speaker 2 (11:42):
He'd lose his mind? Yeah, you wouldn't believe it. Yeah,
he would not believe it.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
That's awesome. But would you tell him.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Just keep dreaming and keep believing, but have fun while
doing it, don't stress out too much things? Will you
trust your hard work, You keep preparing as much as
you can and things will worked out.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Sweet. Well that'll do it for a Poonies protection plan.
We're gonna move on to some fan questions. We put
up an Instagram story asking the faithful for some questions
for you. So here's what they've got for you. If
you weren't playing football, what job would you think you'd
be amazing at?
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Firefighter? Oh cool, I want to be a firefighter?
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Is that another dream of yours that you had when
you were a kid.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Yeah, I thought if football never worked out, probably would
have started doing that.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Nice. What's the weirdest pregame superstition you've ever tried or
seen someone else do the weirdest? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Oh man, you know I was on a good little
run last year. I would reverse my car into the
parking spot for like four home games in a row,
and I was playing very well, and then the fifth
line play so well and I.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Was like, ah, that's not true.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
I thought reversing my car into the parking spot was
like the way, and it's just like not on game day.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
So yeah, that that's canceled.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Now, do you believe in superstitions or after the fifth
game you were like this doesn't exist.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Yeah, just you can ask like Jake or Colt like
next to me, I'm big on superstitions.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Okay, what's one that's been working for you?
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (13:07):
You know those like we get into the huddle every time,
do my little fist bump with them at a certain
time that's running down on the clock.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
It's all very specific.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Okay, nice. If you could swap positions with anyone on
the team for a day, who would it be in?
Go Rock Mac? I love it all right. Final question
from the faithful, if you could design your own pizza
topping combo, what would it be called or what would
be on it?
Speaker 3 (13:30):
My own pizza top of combo? I'm very plain, so
like I wouldn't even do nothing crazy. It was back
sausage and pepperoni, and I call it like ponies pepperoni sausage.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
It's like something very flain.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Well, that's all the questions we've got for you, Dominic.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Thank you so much for joining us today, Thanks for
having me those.
