Speaker 2 (00:09):
Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
This He's Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (00:14):
Storyline with Nick Eatman.
Speaker 5 (00:21):
Good morning, everyone, Welcome to Cowboys Storyline. It is Friday,
December thirteenth. Friday the thirteenth. Is that even thing I wonder?
I mean, I guess it is still a thing for
the younger generation they even know what that is. I mean,
I never actually watched any of those movies, but I've
(00:41):
heard about them, of course. But it's been that kind
of season I guess for the Cowboys to have a
Friday the thirteenth type of year for them. So that's
what it is. This is where we are, Cowboys taking
on the Panthers. Let's talk about that. Let's talk about
whatever you guys want. And you know, I'm sure it'll
(01:03):
be things that I don't want to talk about, but
that's where we are in the season. You guys have
have fought through it. So whatever it is, I'll do
my best to kind of, you know, go along with it,
because I understand we're not exactly just breaking down the
x's and o's of what Carolina's defense does and all that,
but it's more about who's going to play, how do
(01:24):
they look, and what does this mean? Everything is really
a rollover. What does it mean for next year? That's
why they overshown injury was so devastating for a lot
of fans, just because it seems like it's one of
those that could carry over. It probably will carry over.
But like I said on yesterday show, my brief conversation
with Overshown was don't count me out. Tell everybody you know,
(01:46):
don't count me out. So I'm not counting them out,
and I guess what he's saying. He's talking about next season.
But then again, they got to be smart about it.
They can't rush anybody back, and it's important for him
to get right when it's time to get right. Aight,
A A eight five, five two two nine seven is
the number to call. We have a couple of callers
already on the line. Let's start us off with Anthony
(02:08):
and Miami. I'm sure he's in a bad mood. Anthony,
what's up?
Speaker 6 (02:12):
Nick?
Speaker 7 (02:12):
The quick?
Speaker 6 (02:13):
My guy, My guy, it is real. I'm good. It
is rare that I called twice, but I liked it
so much, I'm gonna call you again. I already gave
my Carolina stuff yesterday today as the press of positivity
and always saying that I love everybody's calls, and there's
some truth in what everybody says. I got to dispute
(02:34):
some things and challenging. Rather, I ain't gonna dispute them.
I'm gonna challenge some things. I heard it three callers
after me, Mister Rolston Vegas, who I've agreed with, who
I've called out his name a couple of times. I
don't talk to Rob or she Rob whatever, see how
he talks right interaction because I'm not on the story liners.
I'm an off storyline team, but I'm not on the storyliner,
so I don't get that interaction with a lot of people.
(02:56):
He says the things yesterday, and that's his thoughts and
his opinions, and I respect those, But some of the
things he said I really don't agree with. Now, the Joneses,
I've defended them before, but I don't need to defend
the Joneses. They don't need my opinions, my defense or anything.
So when you say all in, we've talked about that
at the appropriate time. That was when it was time
(03:16):
to really talk about it. In the off season when
he said it, I never really I agree with you.
It was about players. We talked about the youth movement,
what they were gonna use. You've already spent money on people,
so you depending on those guys and you already all in.
That's what I thought. Mister Jones meant, wow, could be wrong.
So said something about deferring money and we're really not
(03:37):
nothing because we don't defer other teams do it? Blah
blah blah.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (03:41):
I saw Tom Downey and I'm gonna do too. I
saw I heard Jeff Kavanaugh with Jessing them talk about
how you make a hundred million, you know, and then
and what you gotta do. You gotta restructure for people.
You gotta cut to this and that, well, that money's
gonna have to come do. You gotta pay the devil
after a while. And I agree with you on that
because that's true and the Cowboys have already done that.
(04:03):
And I'll tell you how I think when people say that,
not saying rob or what a lot of people will
look with Philly doing. Look at what Detroit. Detroit take
them out because they've never done anything, and they always
get a top five pick or something like that, So
they build their team that way. Philly. Now they did it,
but when they wanted to want a super Bowl, they
want to with a backup quarterback. Matter answers, The rounds
might be the only one you can look at saying that,
(04:24):
But you didn't have O'Dell and Sue didn't make a
lot of money when you brought it in. So what
has to happen. The players that you invest in got
to do the job. Your coaches got to do the
job and do a better job. When the Cowboys twenty
one and twenty two, and this is the backup what
I'm saying, twenty one and twenty two, let's take those years.
You were good, you were great. Ye had three twelve
(04:45):
or five seasons, You went to the playoffs. San Francisco
beat you by seven. So all this blowing out stuff,
nobody threw the Cowboys out. They were right there, but
they wasn't. They didn't play smart enough to Randy Gregor's
and people like, they didn't play smart enough, and the
coaches didn't have them prepared. As Mike McCarthy said later,
they wasn't prepared to play the game, which is that's
kind of assinine to say something like that. All right, Okay,
(05:06):
twenty two he retired.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Huh Now, I'm just saying, let's let's let's move it. Like,
tell me, tell me, I hear the point, I hear
the message. Tell me tell me what you have a
question or.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
The Okay, okay, your players and your coaches. Your players
and your coaches really have to do that because you
can invest in people. You invested in Brandon Cooks, You're
invested in Stephan Gilmore. These are Super Bowl winners and
people like that. So you did that. So unless your
players and your coaches do it, and you were good
enough to do it, because your records showed that you
(05:35):
didn't show up. So mister Jones already did that. He
already invested. So you can't say you can spend one
hundred million and you're gonna guarantee yourself the super Bowl.
That's all I'm saying. Let's just have a more positive
approach when it comes to the Cowboys. The Joneses are
gonna make the decision. They're gonna make the decision. So
we're gonna be fans, Oh we're not, and we're gonna
support them, Oh we're not. That's all I wanted to
(05:55):
say no harm in taking for anybody going to make.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
That, appreciate it, okay, thank you, you know, And and
I there's a lot to that. I think this is
going back to the call yesterday that with with Rob.
I don't think he's not talking about not supporting the
team and all that. I think what he was talking about,
more than anything was ways that you can be competitive.
Don't sit here and tell us that you can't be competitive.
(06:19):
Here's some ways to be competitive, so you can create money,
so you can go and do some some things. And
and there's I agree with some of it, but I
do think that that you can't just keep saying, well,
this is how this is the approach every year. You're
just going to keep doing that. You're going to keep
taking out, you know, this loan and just keep pushing
(06:42):
it pushing. It doesn't work that way all the time.
But I think there's a middle ground. And I think
that that there's times where you say, all right, yes,
we're up against it here, but this player right here
that's available. We could get him if we needed to,
we really wanted to, we could, we could get him.
It's against our our model, it's against our playing overall
(07:05):
but let's make an exception here, and here's how we
do that. And I think that that's something I think
the Cowboys can do that. They don't do it as much, probably,
but there's got to be some kind of middle ground.
But but I you know, you can't just say, well,
this is how they free up all this money. There's
a reason why they They can't do that all the time.
(07:25):
And you know, you have you do have to field
a roster of fifty three players. I mean that's or
at least you know, that's what was told to me. Yeah,
last year in free agency, we could do some things,
but next year, twenty twenty five, we're gonna have forty
five players on our team. So you know that that
doesn't seem, you know, do it, especially in the season
like this when they've probably played about seventy five. All Right,
(07:47):
Irene in Falls Church, Virginia, Irene, what's up?
Speaker 8 (07:51):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (07:52):
How are you good?
Speaker 5 (07:53):
How are you good?
Speaker 9 (07:54):
Good?
Speaker 10 (07:54):
Hay, I'm not going to get into the I wasn't
listening enough to be able to comment. I saw some
texts about it, but anyway, I just a quick story
and then a question if people want to answer. So
when I was in college. First year of college, I'm
sitting at the back of my class. I have my
Cowboys thermos. Somebody walks in and sees it and it's
(08:16):
just like Cowboys and I'm like, uh, what Washington Carolina Panthers.
My question for people that that was the first time
that in like a non really traditional rival ever got
in my face about being a Cowboys fan. So my
question for people, if they want to answer, is what's
(08:36):
the most random team that's shown you hate so not
including our division rivals or even like the Steelers, Packers
and forty nine ers. That's what I'm interested, all right.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
By all right, random team that just to give some hate. Here,
here's my thing to that. I don't really have a
problem with that. If your answer is a team, it's
it's the ones that say I hate the Cowboys. They
sucked them, bye bye bye. All right, well, who's your team?
(09:09):
I don't really have a team. I just watched the
game sometimes I don't, you know. I'm like, well, then
all right, you can go. You can shut the front
door because like, you know, nobody cares about that. You know, either,
you know, come to the party, bring something to the part,
don't just don't just walk in and say, oh, I
don't right, I don't really ca. I'm just here. I'm
just here for them for the good times. No bring something,
That's what it is. If you're a Panthers fans, Fine,
(09:30):
they need them. You know we were there last year.
They they need fans. So yeah, I mean that that's
that's cool. I mean, at least at least they have,
you know, Fanny, if you want to talk about the Cowboys, fine,
So yeah, that's Irene's question is there's been some random
random teams. I don't know if it gets better than
that of Carolina fans. They you know, especially talking to
(09:54):
the Cowboys. And I'm sure like we've been to a
super Bowl before you got or something crappy like that,
not that they wanted ever. All right, let's go to
Paul in Vancouver. How are you good?
Speaker 8 (10:08):
Hapy Friday? You too too, Thanks, try to be quick.
Got a few things. So I enjoyed the show yesterday.
I just I would hope people would, you know, look
at the facts before they criticize coaches and ask about
new I know we're not we're trying to get out
of you know, having talking about changes and things like that,
(10:29):
but I really like what coach McCarthy is doing. You know,
he's the pre snap penalties are down. He went to
Washington now coach Dan Quinn with an underman team. I
like how he's changed the play calling lately with you know,
he's calls these plays on the first down to get
Cooper rush out of these long they're long. So I
feel a lot of positives and it's a great thing
when you know you're the start. Players are kind of
(10:53):
advocating for him, and yeah, you know, I just see
way too many positives. And if you look over the
last you know, over the last years, you know, Bill Belichick,
he he was part of, you know, the one of
the both talent poor teams in the league and he
had a big hand in it. McCarthy's won twelve games
three years in a row.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Over the years.
Speaker 8 (11:13):
We talked about safety being an issue in the middle
of the defense, like he's coming and fixed all these things, right, So,
I just seen way too many positives. Yeah, So I
want to say that just had two questions if you
don't mind. So, like, I was really expecting Jalen Brooks
to take a step forward this year. He looked in
the preseason seemed like he had a connection with Cooper Rush.
(11:37):
I really think him and guys like Tyler Guide need
to play. So he let me know what's going on there.
And it doesn't seem like Jaien Brooks has much of
a routree. Everything's kind of deep, So hopefully I'm wrong
on that, but I was really expecting more there and
give him. That was one of Carolina this week. I
never thought that Darren Woodson's last game would be that
(12:00):
playoff game two thousand and three, So I've always kind
of wondered to myself, like, if you would have stuck
around for another year, he could have played with Dware
in the five class. Have you ever thought that? And
I asked you a while ago what your favorite live
player was. I'm like, I didn't even realize that you
watch every game live, So do you have a favorite
(12:20):
play in Darren Woodson's career. I just want to yeah, yeah,
I want to share mine if yeah, quickly could because
then his last year in three, we were playing the
Bills and it look like a really rock them soccer
game was like ten six something like that, where we won. Uh,
they had a running back the Bills Travis Henry he
broke a run in the middle. This is that two
(12:41):
hundred and thirty back like he was kind of in
a Marshaun Lynch style, like he was a beast, like
thirteen hundred yard year and Darren Woodson just came out
of nowhere and just waid him out. Yeah, and that's
when I thought to myself, I'm like, he's just as
good as he wasn't year twelve, as he was in
year one, a year two of it.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
Yeah, So he was.
Speaker 8 (12:59):
A rare guy. He was nice seeing you and Dallas
and nice thing.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 8 (13:05):
Well yeah, him in the media and what's been doing
so well, So all the best to him.
Speaker 5 (13:10):
Well, I appreciate it, Thank you. Thanks Paul ill love
talking about Darren Woodson, no doubt about it, and a
lot of good stuff. There a lot of positive encouragement
for for what Mike McCarthy's doing. That not everybody does that,
and there are some things that you can point out
and you did that, so you know, there's that's that's
(13:32):
the thing about a play caller, you know, he gets
talked about that that one possession in the fourth quarter
when there it's five minutes to go and they ran
it on first down for thirteen or fourteen yards and
then after that pass past pass and had to punt.
And so that's what you know him as a play caller.
That's what you get talked about throughout the game. I
(13:52):
thought they did a pretty pretty good job. They were prepared.
They scored first first drive of the first quarter, first
drive the third quarter. That was has happened all year.
So anyways, nice nice call there. As for Jalen Brooks,
you mentioned him, I think right now, I mean, he's
he'll play, he'll play some, but you're you really got
(14:14):
to see something in Mingo and and and and they
they want to see that here in these last four games,
just because if you're gonna if you're gonna get something
out of a fourth round pick, you know, he was
a second round pick two years ago. He's a fourth
round you're gonna give a fourth round pick in next
year's draft. So when he gets to training camp, he
(14:36):
he needs to be far and away better than a
fourth round pick would be. This would be his third season,
he'd have a few games with the Cowboys, and and
and hopefully a summer with Dak and things like that,
so you know he he's gonna have to be advanced,
and so you want you want him to get as
much as you can, and he'll plays somewhat the same
(14:58):
position as as Jalen Brooks. And then as for Darren
woodson story on the field and all that, I mean, yeah,
he was. You know. The ironic part is that he
you know, he set the record for most tackles and
Cowboys career and he set it, you know, in the
middle of the game. With that, Emmitt Smith also broke
the record. So that was with Walter Payton's record. That
(15:20):
was just Darren Woodson's career in a nutshell, that his
one of his best un field moments was actually trumped
by Emmett's on field moment. And that story of Darren
Woodson's squer but a touchdown by the forty nine ers
was was a play I always remember for Woodson, how
impressive he is. Jerry Rice caught a slant in the
nineteen ninety five game over the middle. They got a
(15:42):
matched up with the linebacker. He took it to the
house for about eighty yards right off the first drive
of the game. But Darren Woodson is chasing Jerry Rice
and he gets them, you know at the end and
basically it tackles him right at the end zone. But
I just look at from a speed standpoint, I'm like, wow,
because Rice is on the move. That was his play
slant the house, and there's Darren Woodson chasing him down.
(16:03):
You know as a big, strong linebacker slash safety, but
he could also play slot quarterer. And he's just he
was just a freak of an athlete. Should be in
the Hall of Fame. Hopefully we'll be. Let's go to
Kevin in Philly.
Speaker 9 (16:17):
Kevin, what's up, Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Man?
Speaker 5 (16:20):
How you doing?
Speaker 9 (16:21):
I'm going I'm good. I'm going to raise in Philadelphia.
I've been a Dallas fan all my life, so I'm
sixty one, just turned sixty one a couple of days ago.
Been a Dallas fan to seventy seventy one.
Speaker 5 (16:33):
Well, I got three words for you. What's that rest? Yeah?
Here we go, man, Here we go. Wasn't as loud
as I thought it would be. That's all right, first
time caller, happy to hear from you. What's going on?
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Man?
Speaker 9 (16:49):
Yes, and listen. Being a fan for so long, I
was listening to one of the other callers that he
was saying about, you know, are we going to support?
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Are we going to be loyal?
Speaker 2 (16:59):
You know?
Speaker 6 (16:59):
And I believe that true Cowboy fans will be, have been,
and will continue to be loyal.
Speaker 9 (17:07):
But that doesn't mean we're not frustrated with the way
the organization.
Speaker 6 (17:11):
Is being run.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Sure, you know.
Speaker 9 (17:12):
For me, you know, I think Jerry Jones needs to
be called the task I don't know why people don't.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
Maybe they're fearful losing jobs or whatever.
Speaker 9 (17:21):
But as a businessman, I don't understand how you can
run the business that is not successful and still continue
to do things the same way year after year. And
I mean, I know, I don't know how much time
I have, So I'm just gonna rapid fire some things
and I'll hang up and lets you deal with it.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
Okay, we all know Mike McCarthy's probably gonna be fired
next year.
Speaker 9 (17:44):
Doesn't really matter because with Jerry Jones hire, it's gonna
be another puppet.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
Because the head coach job, but the Dallas Cowboys comes
with no authority, no power. You're just a game day coach.
Speaker 9 (17:55):
You don't even get to make decisions on what players
actually play. We don't understand why you give up a
fourth round pick to Trey Lance, and you still don't
use him, and this season is done, why not use
Trey Lance and see what you can get with him.
I don't like Mike McCarthy's played calling. I don't like
his time management. There is no way that Dallas will
(18:19):
ever hire a legitimate coach such as.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
Hold on, yeah, let's let's talk for just a second
about this. So you you just said McCarthy doesn't make
the decisions based off of who plays in the game,
So who does? Then? If he's not McCarthy, who's who's
making decision?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Well?
Speaker 9 (18:36):
Okay, So here's why I say that who's making the
decision to play Cooper Rush over Trey Lance? Because when
you look at Jerry Jones interviews, he's the one making
that call.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
Okay, okay, Who do you think, though, is the better
quarterback to win the game against the Panthers, Trey Lance
or Cooper Rush?
Speaker 6 (18:57):
Well?
Speaker 9 (18:57):
Right now, does that game mean?
Speaker 5 (19:00):
No? No, no, okay, Now, just who do you think
it's the better quarterback to win this game? Who do
you think? I think it's Cooper Rush? What do you
do you think it's Lance?
Speaker 9 (19:11):
Well? I would say go with Lance and see what
he got. Okay, we don't know what he can do
in the You're not and because you're.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
Not answering the question though, because you're you're going you
just keep talking big picture. I'm talking about this game.
Who wins this game? Who's the better quarterback for this game?
I think it's Cooper Rush.
Speaker 9 (19:32):
You know what I would say? Rush? Okay, I believe
that this game has something no and.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
I understand that. I understand what you're saying. For Mike McCarthy,
he is trying to win the game. He needs to
win this game for him. The coaches need to win
their record, all of it because they understand what's on
the line for them every single game. He's trying to
get a winning record. He doesn't want a losing record.
He wants to go nine to eight. He's trying to
(19:59):
finish it. So if every game matters to him, so
he wants to go out and win the game. And
if Cooper Rush helps him win the game. So if
he wasn't making the decision, then it would be Trey Lance.
So that's why I'm going to challenge you. I don't
think that Jerry's making the decision on this. I think
I think Mike McCarthy's making the decision on.
Speaker 9 (20:18):
This really now. So, okay, has Cooper Rush, I agree,
has shown.
Speaker 6 (20:26):
Flashes of brilliance.
Speaker 9 (20:29):
I believe that he has shown the capability and being
able to win games. But I think that at this point,
because of the way the league is going, as far
as it being a position of athleticism, I think Trey
Lance would be your better option as being a more
(20:49):
athletic quarterback.
Speaker 5 (20:51):
And you're right about that. I'm fine with playing both.
I'm playing I'm fine if they both go out there
and play some I think that that's where we are
part of the season. I wouldn't be as opposed to that.
But don't forget this. This is a really tricky situation.
Both Cooper Rush and Trey Lance are free agents next year,
so you want to see what Trey Lance. You know,
who else won? The other thirty teams not the forty
(21:13):
nine ers, but thirty other teams would love for the
Cowboys to play Trey Lance so they could get an
idea what he can do. Maybe they would like to
sign him as well. So who are you developing him for.
That's what makes this thing kind of tricky. If he
had two or three years left on the deal, he's
the starter, no doubt about it. I want to see
him play. But that's what makes this thing kind of
(21:35):
different in unique. I know you had some other points.
Can we rapid fire with those a little bit?
Speaker 9 (21:40):
Yeah? Defensively, I was really hoping that Mike Zimmer's defense
would have been a lot better. I don't know why.
For whatever reason, Dallas cannot stop the run. Whatever reason
that is.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
Losing five defensive ends could be one of the reasons.
That could be one. True, that's one.
Speaker 9 (21:59):
And then you talked about the all l thing and
Jermy saying he was all in and we haven't been
able to. We got Mazie Smith, but you lose during Armstrong,
you lose you know a lot.
Speaker 11 (22:14):
Of key people.
Speaker 9 (22:16):
And how are you all in if you're not replacing
these people or going after other people that can really
help solidify the defense.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
Yeah, I'm okay, all right. Well, hey, Kevin, appreciate the
call and appreciate you being a die hard cowboy fan
in Philly. Not easy. I understand that. I know it's not.
I'm sure you've heard some nasty things along the way,
probably this morning and so being in Philly, but hey,
(22:46):
kudos to you. Thanks for the call. Appreciate that, uh call,
going back.
Speaker 9 (22:51):
I love the show, I love the program. Man, keep
doing what you do. I'll keep supporting the Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (22:56):
I know you will. Boy l Hey, you definitely will.
If you're a Cowboy fan. You said over sixty years
old in Philly, you've you've definitely you're You're true and
true all the way, you know. And I don't like
to sit there and just always throw out the injury situation.
I know, I said that just now, and I think
I hope you guys know that's fifty percent maybe a
(23:19):
little bit more sixty seventy percent of some of these issues,
you know, to say, I thought Mike Zimmer's defense would
be better, Yeah, I mean I think I think we
all thought it would be better too. But you know,
injuries happen. There's no doubt. Injuries happen, and how are
you prepared for them? Yeah, that's a big, big thing.
(23:40):
But when they hit the same position over and over
and over, that's where it gets. It's just too much
you can take. And this team already lost two defensive ends.
They let Dorn's Armstrong go, they could not pay him.
They let Dante Fowler go. I don't think anybody had
a huge problem with that. But he's had a nice
season in Washington. Let those two guys go knowing, Hey,
(24:03):
they're gonna draft Marshawn Kneeland, they got Tank, they got Micah.
Sam Williams has got to be the year. Well Sam
gets an a cl injury, DeMarcus Lawrence gets hurt in
week four, He's he's not coming back this season. I don't.
I don't think so at all. Micah, you know he's
had the injury that that really affected them. Marshaw Kneeland
(24:24):
can't stay healthy. You know, he got hurt a little
bit there, and it's just been this revolving door of
of tryouts for defensive ends. Guys you've never heard of
have played a lot of football this year. And then
on the cornerback situation, Digs and Bland did not even
play together until this last game against Cincinnati. I mean,
you guys had never know, we hadn't heard of over Warria,
(24:45):
Josh Butler, keem On Hall. You know, Kayln Carson has
had to place a lot like it's it's not been
what you what you wanted from the past rush standpoint,
from the run stopping standpoint, and then obviously from the corners,
and I even mentioned the linebackers, which the linebackers have
been somewhat healthy until now. Overshown that you look at
(25:07):
the injury report, there's like four linebackers on the injury report.
So all right, we're gonna go to break real quick.
I know we got two callers on live. I got
to hit this first break in. We'll be right back
to answer more calls Cowboys fans.

(27:19):
right back here on the storyline, got a couple of
callers that have been waiting, so we're gonna go to it.
Mike in a Popka, Florida. Mike, what's up? Man?
Speaker 9 (27:29):
Nick?
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Hey? How you doing? Man?
Speaker 5 (27:31):
Good? How are you?
Speaker 3 (27:32):
I'm doing fantastic. Thanks. It's been a good year personally,
not a great year on the football side of it.
But hey, I think you know, before I get start,
I just want to wish you and your family really
merry Christmas, happened New Year. If I'll get a chance
to talk to you again for that. I just really
think that this whole year is just been a revolving
(27:57):
kind of door. From the Packers game. Nothing write in
a Packers game, and nothing has gone right this season.
It's just kind of been an evolution and kept going
on this year. And I think at the end of
the year we've got to stop kind of that that
movement and say, hey, it starts with McCarthy. He's got
to go. We got to get some somebody else in
(28:19):
here to to re energize his team and build for
the future. And part of I didn't hear your comments
are the really business work. So I didn't hear your
comments around what happened bunday night with the punt return,
the block and Ao, you know, touching the ball. But
(28:39):
from my perspective, he made a mistake. It was a
terrible play. He's got to know better. And then to
come out the next day and do an interview and
double down on his mistake to me, sends a clear
message that there's no accountability with the team. There's no
response ability for the for their actions.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
What would you do?
Speaker 9 (29:03):
What?
Speaker 5 (29:03):
What accountability? What a slap on the wrist, a fine,
a cut? What would like you say, accountability? What would
you do there to to make him accountable for that
for that play? Cutting Nick?
Speaker 3 (29:18):
If you're asking me, I would have cut him, Yes, okay,
like like Jimmy Johnson did with Curb Richards.
Speaker 5 (29:23):
No no, no, no, no, no no, no, Jimmy Johnson. Curvin
Richard fumbled twice. You know, he fumbled, he knows the rule.
He fumbled. Uh, leon Let did the same thing. Would
you have cut leon Let?
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Yeah? But Nick. Remember, leon Lett is not the same
as Ao. Just like when right, you know, sleeping in
a meeting. You're not going to cut Michael. I understand.
Speaker 5 (29:50):
I understand that's the problem though. You just you you're
you're talking about accountability, but you're also talking about the
fact that we're going to play favorites here, we're gonna
when we we are when we they all do. This
guy makes more money than this guy, so you know,
you treat people differently, So you're gonna you're gonna cut
him because he made that, because he made that that play,
(30:12):
you cut him to set an example. If Curvin Richards
could play, he wouldn't have been cut, you know.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
So that's what I'm saying. Okay, you gotta say. You
gotta say, hey, you can't come out the next day, Nick,
and say, listen, I stand by screwing up the game
and costing the game, to be costing my teammates the game.
I stand by the mistake I made, Like.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
You gotta you gotta at least have some remorse.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
And say, look, I made a mistake. I shouldn't have
touched it. I should have ran away when everybody was
yelling get away and get away.
Speaker 5 (30:41):
Let me let me tell you, Mike, let me tell
you this though that he talked after the he talked
like the next day. He didn't talk after the game.
I was standing ten feet from his locker with three
other reporters trying to talk to him, and CJ. Goodwin
was was and Jordan Lewis was blocking it. It was
going to happen. He and I was told, if you
(31:03):
had been in here ten minutes earlier, you understand why
this wasn't happening. Remorse, he had more remorse than you
could possibly fathom. He did not. I mean, he lost
the game and the season was already lost pretty much,
but that was the nail. We know that. Everybody knows that.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
So but then you can't come out the next day
to the media and to the fans and say, hey,
I own it. I made the mistake, and.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
I'm standing by making a mistake. You got to stay to.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
The media, Yeah, I made the mistake. I'm sorry. I
screwed up. But he didn't do that. I mean, if
he felt that remorseful during where he's got to get
teamags to block him so you gotta can talk to him,
then he's got to come out and say I screwed
that up, man, that's I know better. I made that mistake,
not say listen, I just doubled down. I made the
(31:52):
mistake too bad. I screwed the game up. Like to me,
you got to you gotta own it. And McCarthy's got
a home guys accountable. I mean they you know, the penalties,
the dumb plays like.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
None of these guys.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
McCarthy doesn't hold any of these guys accountable for this stuff.
And it gets frustrating watching.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
Because you're like, guy, you know, if you're really fighting
for your job.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Then you got to hold these guys accountable and say
we're not going to accept this kind of performance.
Speaker 5 (32:21):
Hold the guys accountable that you don't think are good players,
not not CD who can't stay on side. Sometimes CD
is looking ahead and dropping the pass every now and again.
Speaker 3 (32:31):
That's why that's why you don't pay guys like CD
all that money and Dack all that money, because they're
not the leaders that hold their teammates accountable when they
make these mistakes. And like Irvin and Emmett and Troy,
those guys held the other teammates accountable. The coach didn't
even have to do it because they managed it. We don't.
(32:53):
We don't have these leaders on this team.
Speaker 6 (32:55):
I don't know.
Speaker 14 (32:55):
We don't.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
Yeah, and I don't know that. I mean, I don't
know those stories that of them holding him accountable and
how all that went down in the nineties, I'm not sure.
I mean, they were. It was a great team, a
great players. There was no salary cap for most of
that and and they you know, they benefited from it
with great with great players. But as far as you know,
you have you have big time players that are also
(33:18):
making mistakes as well. So that's why, you know, that's
that's why this thing could get tricky. You know, you
want to be held these guys accountable, but uh, sometimes
you're some of your best players are the ones making
the mistakes as well. But I get it. It's it's
it's a frustrating thing. Thanks for the call, Mike. Mike's
one of the ogs, man, He's one. He's one of
(33:39):
those callers from way back when we were doing Tuesday
nights at the Ranch with Mickey. All right, let's go
to Dylan Northport, Florida. If he's still around, Dylan, he's
still there.
Speaker 7 (33:48):
Hey, I'm here. My beard's a little longer now, but
it's all good, A little great. Ye last call, dude,
I'm not I'm not cutting AO. He was a sufficient
enough backup player to fill in when our guys were hurt.
He made, you know, a bonehead play during a season
that was already lost.
Speaker 14 (34:03):
So what the hell is.
Speaker 7 (34:03):
Even the point doesn't matter. I'm not I would have
cut Zeke instead of uh suspend, you know, basically spending
him the game a long time ago to make an example.
If that's where we want to go, I'm not cutting
a O. I think that's silly, very silly. Yeah, I
want to talk about Rob's call yesterday. Dude, he he
mentioned me, me my name.
Speaker 5 (34:23):
At one point, He's got you as the cathologist of
the storyliner, so like, yeah, he's got you. Got to
figure it out.
Speaker 7 (34:30):
He's like, we have the Internet, we have dealing. I
felt like in The Avengers, like the one guy's.
Speaker 14 (34:35):
Like, yeah, we have the Hulk.
Speaker 7 (34:36):
I felt like that at that point. I thought, that's
pretty cool. Rob appreciate that.
Speaker 8 (34:39):
But I'm not.
Speaker 7 (34:40):
I'm not that smart, you know. I just I do
a little bit of research and plagiarize my work. I mean,
no big deal, but you know, he's not. He's not wrong. Uh,
in the fact that there's things you can do, you
can I think restructuring CD makes a lot of sense
because you can basically push his dead money out like
a decade, because you're going to extend him, you know,
after the four years again most likely, so that doesn't matter.
(35:01):
You can cut Steel post you on, or you can
restructure Steel. You can restructure Diggs and that one of
them are really gonna have a long term impact if
you do that as far as the money goes. But
Dak is like the one that is obviously the biggest
percentage point of this whole thing. It takes the large
hunk of the cap. So you basically have two options
with Dak. Prescott right it out as is right, and
(35:22):
he's going to average about twenty four percent of the
cap every season. Next season he's like thirty two percent
of the cap, which is absolutely insane. For reference, a
quarterback hasn't gone to the Super Bowl with more than
you know, coming from more than seventeen percent of the
cap since twenty fifteen. The average is eight percent of
the cap. So like, if you have a quarterback taking
thirty percent of the cap, like good luck yeah, God bless.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (35:45):
The other option is to restructure him, and they did
build in four or four years into his deal. There's
no money assigned to those board years as it is
right now, but that tells me they at least put
the lever in to pull the trigger on a restructure.
And you know, if you do that, you can afford
players now, but it's gonna sucking twenty twenty nine when
all that money comes due at that termination of his contracts.
So it's like, do you want to have four years
(36:06):
left of Dak Prescott with potentially being able to sign
good players, or do you want to just kind of
roll the money over from his old contract into this
new one here, you know, amortize it out over four
years and then you don't have a big penalty at
the end. So it's like kind of craft the options
both ways. But that's you know, where you're asked, like
what do you do? You know, that's the question I
(36:27):
guess for this offseason.
Speaker 5 (36:28):
Yeah, it is. And it's one of those things too,
where like you know, pushing out the money for CD
makes more sense, Pushing it out for Dak three or
four years ago makes more sense. But when you keep
pushing the money out at some point like this, this
has got to be the contract where like this is
it for Dak, So keep pushing money with him and
(36:52):
adding more years to him. You know that this is
I think you got to play it out with with Dak.
If you you know, you signed them, this is what
you have to do. You got to hope that the
cap goes up to the point where you can probably
still function. But I don't, I don't know. I think
you have to kind of ride it out here with
Dak at this point.
Speaker 7 (37:10):
Yeah, I don't know how I feel, man, because we've
seen them have ample cap room before and they don't
really bring in external guys. So at first, I'm like,
restructure Dak. You're going to have them for four years.
Let's get you know, the most out of him by
signing other guys. And I'm also like, Okay, we've had
room before and they don't really bring in big outside names,
so is there really a point in doing that. And
(37:30):
then it's not like you're sacrificing a single season in
twenty twenty nine. You're potentially losing guys in twenty twenty
nine when you have that giant cat tit because you know,
you can't extend other guys or sign other guys that
you want to sign because of Dak's dead money at
that point. So that could be a not just a
twenty twenty nine problem, but a twenty twenty nine and
beyond problem if you lose certain players because of Dak's
(37:51):
dead money at that point. So I don't really know.
I'm not kind of riding the fence on that one.
If you restructure or not. Like I said, they had
the levers built in. I think they're probably going to
because you can't, like you can have a guy taking
up thirty the cap and be okay. But I mean,
I don't really know for sure, So I guess we'll see.
Speaker 5 (38:06):
Yeah, well obviously, well we will see. And and you
know you have anything else dealing, we're gonna keep it moving.
Speaker 8 (38:12):
No, man, that's it.
Speaker 6 (38:14):
That's it.
Speaker 7 (38:14):
I know you're busy.
Speaker 5 (38:15):
Well I appreciate that. I know you were. You you
guys talk about the stuff on the on the storyliners,
you know, spaces on on Twitter, and and you know
that's where a lot of this this came from. And
and and yes, I mean, like I've said a couple
of times, like you can all yeah, you can. You
can get money. You can you can figure out ways
to to save some here and there. You can cut
(38:36):
players and trade some and you can create space. But
but you know, you also got to remember when you're
doing some of these, some of these moves, you you
also have to you know, you have to fill fill
that that spot.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
And h.
Speaker 5 (38:53):
I think there's a there's also a notion too that
like fans don't really consider you re signing your players
as doing something other than obviously DAK you know, because
it makes so much sense there, I mean, because it's
so big on the salary cap. But like you know,
re signing your own players and things like that, Like Nope,
(39:15):
I don't think fans look at that like, hey, we're
doing something like last year. Remember remember last training camp
where it was like it was steel and then it
was Hooker and it was digs to start with, and
you know, and like, you know, you're signing these guys.
I mean, the Cowboys look at their own roster and
look at all these free agents and look at these
guys that go, hey, we gotta get this guy, this guy,
this guy done. So you know, I don't think they
(39:37):
always look at saying we need seventy eighty ninety million
dollars so we can go out and get all these
other players now every once in a while, I think
it would be nice. I do think players need fresh starts.
I think that a change of scenery, and I do
think you can you can get some free agents every
now and again. They could come in and help. I
would like to see the Cowboys do that more than
they do, but I I understand it. But at the
(40:01):
same time, it's been you know, a long time at
this and we haven't seen the ultimate payoff like that.
So all right, let's go to break here one more

in Birmingham, England.
Speaker 14 (41:45):
Hello, Nick, how are you doing good?
Speaker 5 (41:46):
How are you?
Speaker 14 (41:48):
I'm very well? Thank you, Nick Chair. We've done favorite
guy movies. What's your favorite Christmas movie?
Speaker 5 (41:55):
Christmas movie for Christmases? Vince Vaughn I love it fantastic.
Speaker 14 (42:04):
Mine is love actually as a part in that where
the guy with an English accent is irresistible to all
American women. Now, I've only been to the US once
and that wasn't my experience. But you know, cracking film.
So I tried to tried to call you earlier in
the week and I was mostly don't start, don't start
(42:28):
that argument.
Speaker 5 (42:29):
Start that one off, definite?
Speaker 14 (42:35):
Is it a Christmas movie? I I've tried to call
you earlier in the week and I was mostly going
to talk about demo, but I think people have have
covered that very well. But just to add my my
thoughts and what a fantastic human being. If only one
can can fight this off, it's it's him. So a
great story you told, so uh, all the best to him.
(42:55):
We'll be thinking of him. So Rob versus Nick. This
was a lot of fun yesterday. And you know, I
get it. I get the frustration. I'm kind of team
Nick on this one. I feel like with with Stephen Jones, Yeah,
he said what he said. I think there might be
(43:17):
an element of expectation management in that. I don't think
it's that we're going to do nothing. And I think
you mentioned middle ground earlier. I think that's where we'll
end up. But the thing with with what Rob is
saying is, you know he's gone on yesterday he said,
he's lying, we can do this, we can get one
(43:38):
hundred million and so forth. Well we can, but at
what costs? And you know, there's a over the cap,
there's a there's a calculator tool. So I would say
to Rob, go on, And I love Rob. I'm not
dissing Rob at all. Rob's absolutely fantastic. He's great entertainment.
But go on, over the cap. Make your plan, including
for our got something like thirty three agents. We've got
(44:00):
back up quarterbacks as it stands. Next year, we've got
all that to do. Come back, What is your plan
and what is the cost of it in twenty twenty eight,
twenty twenty nine, and do you accept that? Because in
twenty twenty five you're not accepting that, so at some
point you've got to pay. So but it's a great
conversation and I really really enjoyed that. I mean, part
(44:23):
of it is, you know, fourteen million for cutting Terence Steel. Now,
maybe they'll do that, maybe they won't. But Jones is
Mantra is we like our guys, so I suspect they
won't do that, and if they do, you've got to
get someone else in there. So there's a lot of
work to do one way and another this summer, and I,
(44:43):
like you said, I think middle Grounds is the way.
Let's let's get some guys, but it's not going to
be game changes in the off season. I don't think
I'll leave you with that, so you can get another
caller or two on.
Speaker 5 (44:57):
Thanks Mike, appreciate that. Yeah, then you make you make
some good points there. You know, it's not always it's
it's a complicated thing when you're going and do multiple
multiple years, and you know, I don't think I don't
know if that's exactly what he was he was saying
(45:17):
or even caring about. He was talking about more next year,
going year to year. Things change all the time, and
that's that's what makes it tough. You do have an
eye towards the future, but at the same time, you've
got to figure out what you're doing right now, you
know as well, And that's what that's what these fans
care about. You know, what have you done for me today?
(45:37):
So all right, let's go to Robbie and Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Speaker 11 (45:43):
What's up, Robbie, I missed the day yesterday. What's going
on with me?
Speaker 5 (45:48):
I don't know. I mean you because if you The
thing is, we have a stipulation on this show that
if you call seven days in a row, you become
a co host on the show. And it was just six,
so you're out.
Speaker 11 (46:01):
So okay, I got to start a news trend. Then
I'll start again.
Speaker 5 (46:05):
That's a joke. Actually, that's a giant caller. Some of
the other callers that you know, seven in row you
said on that one Friday. Yeah, now you guys are
all you guys are already co hosts. That's that's what
it is.
Speaker 11 (46:20):
We're talking and we're hanging out with it.
Speaker 5 (46:22):
Right when people say you do a show by yourself,
I was like, no, I don't. I don't know you guys,
And if you don't, Chris starts talking. So it's all good.
Speaker 11 (46:30):
And we'd love to hear Chris talk.
Speaker 5 (46:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (46:31):
Still the hardest working man at the Cowboys, besides the
players and the coaches. You know, the coaches put in
an hours.
Speaker 6 (46:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (46:38):
I thought for sure we'd hear it. Yeah, I knew
that was coming. Yeah, all right, what else? What do
you got?
Speaker 7 (46:45):
Hey?
Speaker 16 (46:45):
Man?
Speaker 6 (46:45):
What's going on?
Speaker 11 (46:46):
What are we going to do this weekend?
Speaker 3 (46:49):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (46:50):
Like hang out? Like what what do you mean?
Speaker 6 (46:52):
Like in the game, in the game, the game.
Speaker 5 (46:55):
I thought you were coming to Carolina. I was like,
I don't know, what are we what are we going
to do? I think it's going to be a game
where Carolina gets out to an early lead and then
the Cowboys got to figure out if they want to
if they want to rally, and they want to they
want to punch back because I think I think they're
going to get a punch right in the face early
on in this game. I think Caroline is playing well, uh,
(47:18):
to their standards, let's be real clear about that. To
their own standards of three and nine, I think that
they're playing well. I think Bryce, to his standards, is
playing well better. Yeah, and well he should be the
number one pick in the draft, you know.
Speaker 11 (47:34):
But but hey, listen, we've talked about that with trade trading. Micah,
we don't know what the number one draft always is.
Speaker 6 (47:41):
Yeah, how many bus have been the first pick?
Speaker 5 (47:44):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (47:44):
Well I can name a five picks off to head.
Speaker 5 (47:47):
Probably, Well, you're not getting the number one pick too,
just by trading him, you know what I mean?
Speaker 11 (47:51):
I know, I agree, I would not trade Mikey. You
know what I'm at.
Speaker 5 (47:55):
Yeah, yeah, well, I think it's I think it's also
team Jerry.
Speaker 11 (47:58):
You know, yeah, Jerry. I don't think the Cowboys I.
Speaker 5 (48:01):
Don't think they want to trade Micael at all. There's
some people in the organization that that have have talked
about it and what it would mean and what what
you could do that, but I don't I don't think so.
I don't think he's.
Speaker 11 (48:15):
Been around provercial Walker trade though. I mean, you're not happening.
Eight players, three first round picks. You know that's never
gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (48:25):
No, no, no, no, that's not happening. That was remember
that was pre trade. Uh salary cap?
Speaker 11 (48:30):
Salary cap? Yeah, well, I kind of still wish we'd
go back to no salary cap like the Yankees or
the Mets and always in the Super Bowl there'd be
a couple of teams with us, though there'd be some
teams and the parody would not be as fun. I
agree with that.
Speaker 5 (48:44):
No, No, I wouldn't be It wouldn't be as fun,
but it would be cool for the Cowboys.
Speaker 11 (48:48):
It would be cool for a Cowboys. Yes, sir, all.
Speaker 6 (48:51):
Right, good day you two.
Speaker 5 (48:53):
All right, see you later. All right, let's go to
Leicester and Minnesota be our last call. Leicester.
Speaker 6 (48:59):
What's up, hey, how you doing out there.
Speaker 16 (49:04):
I'm loving my young offensive lineman, especially Hoffman. I notice
that Rico a lot of times when he runs. I
don't have the all twenty two or whatever that is,
but I just watch it a lose as close as
I can. Most of the time he runs right behind Hoffman,
Haffmon goes up to the second level and gets the
(49:25):
next linebacker or safety or whatever. I'm loving that. My
favorite Christmas movie is It's a Wonderful Life, George Bailey.
Speaker 5 (49:33):
We're doing this next week. We're gonna go Christmas movies.
We'll do it next week for sure. But you know what,
that's good you call in get us going. It's a
wonderful life. That's that's yours. We'll take a poll next week.
I'm gonna do it all all next week, even though
next week is going to be a really weird week
for the schedule. I'm just warning you guys. Now, changes
(49:53):
on the schedule Tuesday, changes on the schedule on Thursday.
Maybe Friday, there will be in those shows just throwing
it out there. Next week will be a different week
for Cowboy Storylin.
Speaker 16 (50:04):
Yeah, okay, I like it. And I think what as
far as Rob from Vegas, what he I think what
he was saying. I think he did say it. He
just wants to to win NFC championship and or a
super Bowl, so he's saying, just let's just do it.
I mean, all the other little things I guess. I
(50:26):
don't know if he thought about that or whatever, but
I think his main point was just let's just get there,
and let's go all in.
Speaker 6 (50:34):
And get there.
Speaker 16 (50:35):
And I know you gotta be responsible and everything, but
he's saying, I mean, he even said it, well we'll we'll,
we'll take you know, three years from him from now
being one and fifteen, if we can go to the
super Bowl, you know, pretty soon. I think that's what
he meant. But anyway, hey, I just want't ended with
what I always ended with until we get a good,
(50:57):
very good offensive and defensive line. Cowboys fans, this is
what we got, Cowboys. Oh my score be twenty four
ten Cowboys Cowboys?
Speaker 5 (51:08):
All right, sounds good. I also want to throw in
thanks for the call lester. Sergeant Sue had texted earlier
in the show said defense looks even better against these panthers.
Dallas wins twenty six to twelve. This delusion is deliciously delightful.
That's an inside joke there that he's been saying. I
think I heard say that on the storyliners last week.
(51:30):
All right, yeah, and to the point, I've never heard
anybody that didn't call in the show that's been referenced
as much as as my man robed from Vegas. So
why you're the captain man? Because but you know, I
think more than anything what was saying was it. I mean,
just think about that day that you've had, you know
where maybe you had car trouble here and they got
(51:54):
in trouble at work, boss goes on to you or something,
and then you get home and you're dealing with stuff
here and you know, own burn the food and all
this stuff, and you're going to bed and you go,
you know what, tomorrow's gonna be worse, Like nobody wants
to hear that. You want to go to bed and
you're like, you know what, it's gonna be better tomorrow.
And that's what that's what it kind of feels like
like this bad year, I'm dealing with it. Oh, next
year is going to be worse than this. Well, nobody
(52:16):
wants to hear that, and I understand the frustration there.
All right, next week we will be back on Monday
talking about this Cowboys Panthers game, and as I said before,
some changes in the schedule. Tuesday show is going to
be at a different time and maybe some other changes
as well. I don't think we'll have a show next
(52:36):
Friday because we have a work event there. I think
that's gonna be a lot of changes all over the
place next week with it with the podcast, So stay
tuned for that and bear with us. Get to this
holiday week. All right, Let's see what happens Cowboys and
Panthers in Carolina on Sunday. We'll talk about it on Monday.
We'll see you guys then for Chris beam My Nick Eatman,
(52:57):
see next time on Storyline.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
This has been production of Dallascowboys dot Com and the
Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
