Giants For your Week nine rapid Reaction, I'm Madeleine Burke
alongside the Super Bowl champ Howard Cross the Giants falling
(00:33):
to the visiting San Francisco forty nine ers thirty four
to twenty four as the final score. Howard Giants went
down the field on the opening drive and put together
a pretty solid opening drive touchdown scoring possession, and then
the offense kind of struggled and stammered until late in
the game.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
What happened I think that you know, San Francisco got
caught in the first the first fifteen plays because the
Giants were in a no huddle offense and they were
just constantly running plays without being in a huddle. Didn't
give San Francisco chance to get proper substitutions, kind of
threw a mouth to the rhythm a little bit, and
they got out to a quick score. Second time around,
(01:11):
they kind of they made the first stop. Once you
make the first stop, then your team's behind the change,
so to speak, and you have to then you can't
do the no huddle offense. You got to get in
the huddle. You got to start calling plays, and that
gives the defensive chance to get set and get themselves running.
It got to the point to they got down to
the last quarter and they had to score a lot
(01:31):
of points, and you know, San Francisco starts playing prevent
a little bit, keeping everybody in front of them. That
means the Giants are just going to take what they
can get all the way down the field. So they
get a lot of first downs and they're hoping that
they won't get them and they won't get the en zone.
But you know, Jackson Dark kept getting the end zone.
So that's that's a good way to do it.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Now. The Giants defense struggled a bit today. You know,
there were some moments. You know, they had a couple
of sacks. Brian Burns had one, putting him up on
eleven on the season, and for perspective, twelve and a
half his career high. In the season, he's got eleven
through nine weeks, So a productive individual season for Brian Burns.
But the defense as a whole, you know, struggling to
contain this Niners offense, especially in the middle of the field.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
What did you see over the Giants defense?
Speaker 3 (02:13):
They were having problems in the middle of the of
their defense. I think, you know, you've got to be
able to plug and play with everybody that comes in
that we call it the picket fence. Everybody has to
have a slot, so you can't just let guys froun
up the field. They were getting to the second level
so easy, uh, and they were doing it, you know,
right up the middle. They ran a couple of plays
to the outside and got lucky with those because the
(02:36):
leverage didn't come up again. The picket fence was like
one slot out and then there's a hole and McCaffrey
will take it. Of course, he did a couple of
great jump cuts in the backfield, dodging guys and then
once he gets once he gets ahead of steam, it's
kind of hard to get him down so that if
they didn't get to him early and often do in the middle.
I mean, Dexter hasn't been the, like I said, full
(02:59):
strength since since last year's injury, and he's not playing
nearly as many play as he was playing last year.
But the other guys are kind of stepping up, some
of the young guys are trying to step up. But
you need him to be playing at a really high level,
especially to you know, deter people from running them all,
especially right up the medal.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yeah, and running the ball. You know, you think about
the rushing numbers. Scot only had one hundred and fifty
nine yards rushing. I guess only Christian McCaffrey one hundred
and six there on the day. With the passing game too,
I mean mac Jones didn't throw an incomplete pass until
the third quarter. Now, granted, in the second quarter he
was sacked by Brian Burns. The ball came out and
the officials called it a fumble recovered in the air
(03:39):
as Dual Carter grabbed the ball. The Giants defense gave
the offense a great field position. They weren't able to
convert their big defensive play there, but other than that.
You know the passing game, you know what happened there.
And yes, there were several players, especially the dbs that
were injured coming into this one. You saw Tay Banks
and Corey Black, the rookie making his first career start
(04:01):
at corner.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
But what was going on in the passing defense.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
It's very simple that they would running the ball so
effectively that when they just they ran play action, you
would see the linebackers, the safeties, everybody followed the back
trying to make sure they were in position to get
to them if he got a loosen ren and they
would throwing classes to the to the slot receiver, to
the off receiver that was getting singled up on that
on the backside, because that guy is like, he's by himself,
(04:25):
he's he's trying to look at the back as well,
and when the receiver gets on top of him, it's
almost too late. And you know, everybody's eyes are carrying
to the ball or where they think the ball is going.
And then the quarterback rises up and throws it. How
to get in here?
Speaker 1 (04:38):
If you're lined up here, you gotta go over the
middle with at the score right, How do we make
that happen? I don't know, but citizen does.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
It makes sense of your money with citizens official Bank
of Eli Manning. Now, going into the half, the Giants
had an opportunity. They lined up for a field goal
Graham Gonno just left of the uprights there able to connect,
So it was seventeen to seven going into the break
instead of seventeen ten. When you have a moment like
that right before the half, is it a bit deflating
(05:07):
for the team.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I think a lot of things are deflating. Granber missing
a basically a chip field goal was like forty to
forty five for him as kind of a chip field goal.
Having players dropped the pall in the middle of the
field over and over again when you're you know, third
down plays, you're dropping the ball. You see another drop
later in the game. That deflates the offense. It stops
(05:29):
the offense. Coal you have to make plays, and I
don't mean like plays above the numbers, like the balls
hitting you in the chest. You got to catch it.
So that's hurting. That's hurting everybody's morale a little bit
when stuff like that's happening. The other thing that was
kind of weird was the San Francisco forty nine Ers
(05:49):
ran a fourth down play early in the game and
their fullback started before the play and the referees did
not throw a flag. So when something like that happens,
that kind of changes the flow of the game as well.
That allowed them to keep the drive alive and go
down and score a touchdown. If that play doesn't happen,
or if they throw the flag and have to punt,
it might be a whole different outcome and maybe a
(06:11):
different energy in the statum. But it's not always one moment.
But that was a big moment in the game.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, a big moment.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And you know, granted there's got to be a room
for human error and officiating, but that is definitely one
that I'm sure the league will look at later on
and say, hey, you.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Missed something right there.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
You know, a tough loss for the Giants, thirty four
to twenty four, falling to two and seven on the season.
You know, here Jackson Dark kind of deflated talking after
the game at the podium. You know, several of his
teammates kind of a great quality and a quarterback and
a young quarterback who's become a leader of this team.
Is just how much he hates to lose. How do
you take that hating to lose energy and instead of
(06:49):
letting it weigh you down, let it propel you forward.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
As it's easy.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
All you do is you use that energy to be
more appropriate, to be I don't want to say perfect,
but almost perfect. You have to be as polished as possible.
If it makes you study more, it makes you, you know,
calm yourself down when you're playing more because you're not
as you're not so anxious throwing the ball when you
get out on the edge. You know he missed a
couple throws through behind the guys a couple of times,
(07:15):
and to calm you down, it's like, Okay, I know
what I need to do now, and you can. You
can execute. The execution is probably the biggest part of it.
And that's what you know, hating to lose does. It
makes you want to execute better every every day in
every way you can.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
And the execution especially important in certain situations that have
kind of struggled for this Giant's offense, especially third down
five twelve today on third down, how do you kind
of capitalize more on those circumstances.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Well, first thing you do, you can't be way behind
the sticks. You got to keep everything manageable. Third and four,
third and five, and there are a lot of those,
and they still didn't make them. And the other thing
you have to do is like when you're a player,
when you have your opportunity to make a play, make
the play, don't you can't. You can't drop the ball.
You got to run the right routes. You got to
get your blocks. It's you know, their quarterbacks paid to
(08:01):
throw the ball near you, not to you. That's why
I was raised. So if it's around you catch it.
Don't depend on the officials to bail you out. Do
you go make the play.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Got to make the play, got to come and like
you said, let this kind of propel you to be
sharper and stronger in your preparation on the defensive side
of things. You know, yes, having a lot of new
faces out there may affect the communication and may affect,
you know, the understanding of where your teammates are going
to be and when. But you know, as injuries deplete
any team in the league, how does the defense clean
(08:31):
it up?
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Going into Week ten?
Speaker 3 (08:33):
More Brian Burns. More guys like Brian Burns. I got
to step up Thibodau's got to come up and make
some plays. You got to get Okay to make some
plays that, you know, a couple more plays because he's
kind of in the second day, I'm a linebacker almost
by himself because every time he looks to us left,
r to us right, someone's hurt and it's just him.
So he's got to figure out a way to be
(08:54):
you know more, you know, more voisterous, gets, you know,
making people have more calls, you know, stay on top
of so they'll know exactly what's going on and where
he expects them all to be. And then if they're
all on the same page constantly, then it'll get better
for him. The secondary, I think Tyler Newban is gonna
have to like be He's got to raise his game
a lot of levels. Is going to be a great
communicator and get people where he thinks they should be
(09:16):
as well. That way, these guys all know where there
are on the field, and that creates the umbrella that
they need that they can stop people from getting out.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
If you want to know how to manage two minutes
of crunch time football, I'm your match. But if you're
wondering about a long term financial plan. You should talk
to citizens. Hey, I can also talk long care. I'd
like to learn about Anolier routine. Yes, I knew I
could help make sense of your money with citizens.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Now, the Giants have another tough task next week, Week ten,
they're on the road in Chicago against the Bears. Bears
team that's coming off of forty seven forty to win
over the Bengals in Cincinnati. Forty seven points, first of all,
has a lot of points. It's a big challenge for
this Giants defense. But also when you consider how effectively
they've been running the ball. I mean, you know Sunday
they had two hundred and eighty three rushing yards. With
(09:59):
a lot of injuries at the position, young Manungai is
stepping in there, Caleb Williams dishing it and also throwing
for three touchdowns and catching one. The creativity that we've
seen from this Bears offense, plus being on the road,
what kind of a challenge does this pose for the
Giants next week?
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Well, this is like looking at Detroit two point oh here,
You've got to remember that's where the coach came from.
He's going to do everything within his arsenal, and you
saw a lot of crazy things last year coming out
of Detroit from an offensive standpoint, at one point, they
were I think the leading scoring offense in the league.
So that's why you see forty seven points. The Bengals
don't They don't have a great proficient defense to say
(10:36):
the least, but you know, you got to be able
to do something. Run Bubble. They scored forty two points themselves,
so if they had scored a many points, it's gonna
be an interesting game. If the Giants can stop the
run or at least slow it down, then everything will
be different. If they can't stop the run and slow
it down at the offense is going to score a
lot of points.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
See how it all goes. Giants back at it again.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
One of the best things about having a tough loss
is the opportunity to get back on the field and
do it again.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Next week.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
The Giants head to Chicago for Week ten to take
on the Bears. But that's a wrap for Week nine.
Giants falling to the forty nine Ers thirty four to
twenty four is the final score for the Super.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Bowl champion Howard Cross.
