Speaker 1 (00:08):
There are Colts fans, and welcome back to another episode
of the Two Minute Drill. I'm Amanda Foster, joined once
again by JJ Stankowitz out here at Grand Park where
the Colts just wrapped up their eighth practice of training camp.
So we are officially in the second week of training camp,
if you will, given it's the eighth practice, which is
kind of hard to believe because we already lost track
of the number of practices that we've had and I've
(00:29):
had to I had to go back and count on
my calendar and hopefully it's still right.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
We've only been up here for a week and a
half and it feels like we've been up here for
a month.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yeah, and which is a good thing exactly. And a
lot's happened, especially in the last week since we hopped
on this podcast. The some of the biggest things hamstring
injuries to Jaylen Jones and Juju Brents, with no real
set timetable for either of them to return. According to
Shane steike In, Michael Pittman has a bit of a
groin thing. Did not practice today, but there's not you know,
(00:58):
the load management type stuff you're Franklin came back to
practice today for the first time after an off season
ankle injury. Didn't do a whole lot of work in
the team drill, but he got dressed, which is more
than he's done before.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Going through individual stuff for him is a good step
in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yes, and then Chane steak And also said this past
or he said this weekend. He said this on Thursday,
that they'll discuss the plans for Anthony Richardson and Daniel
Jones in terms of what Baltimore is going to look
like next Thursday, and we'll have a final decision on Monday.
Steak In the scheduled to talk to the press tomorrow
and then also on Tuesday before Thursday's game. You'll find out,
(01:35):
I would assume on Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah, you'll probably be an update from Baltimore. Again, went up.
By the way, you will be in Baltimore.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
I will be in Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
That's your trip, that is my I'm hanging back here.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
We talked about this on the last podcast that I'm
an East Coast person, but I've never been to Baltimore,
so this is a first. I'm very excited. I only
wish the Orioles were in town.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
But that's Okay, Well they're having a bad season, so.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
That's anyway anyway. Anyway, So speaking of the quarterback competition,
in the last few days before this practice, yes, if
you will, Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson Senior, by the
way official which we came kind of glossing over, they
were stacking their days. They were having some pretty good
success and growth from day one for both of them.
(02:19):
Saw a lot of good decision making, especially from Anthony Richardson.
Stike and said the other day that he's been playing
at a high level and kind of just building and
stacking on what he's able to do, especially with those
with layering passes in the short short game and everything
like that. The Thursday night practice under the lights, we
saw some deep balls for kind of the first time
it felt like on a more consistent basis with throws
(02:39):
to Duelin and Adie Mitchell and Jones had a good
practice that day too.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, and that's something where Shane Stiken told us, as
you're kind of going through camp, you're adding more of
the offense, You're installing more of the offense, and Thursday
night was you know, it looked like they were installing
some more shot plays and a lot of those worked
where Adie Mitchell, like you mentioned, Amanda had a really
nice on field, Ashton Dulan had a touchdown. You saw
(03:03):
more of those deep balls kind of leaving the hands
of both quarterbacks, and yeah, I mean that that Thursday practice,
I walked out of their film like that is as
good of a practice as I've seen both these quarterbacks
have and it was that. There was not a lot
to dislike about that. Ye from a quarterback standpoint. Now,
on Saturday, the defense definitely won the day, which is Saturday.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
You have that in training camp. Everything everything is going
to change every day.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
I do think it's been interesting in that the two
red zone days the Colts have really had out here.
So that was last Saturday where they weren't in pads,
and then this Saturday where they were in pads a
lot of red zone had these stuff. The defense did
a very good job in both of those days, and
you know, you saw, I think there probably were some
(03:50):
throws both quarterbacks left out there today, but you saw,
I mean kennymore the second was all over in coverage
he had. He had Yeah, great day, not just the
interception he had, but to start off practice, basically right
he was. He had a really really good day in
coverage Travarious Ward at a pass break up. Today Joe Bachi
had an interception. Ye, so I think you know that
(04:13):
this offense, I don't want to It's not like, you know,
it was a big concern that they've been too bad.
Red're not even bad, but two days in the red
zone where they've struggled a little bit. But that is
an area that the Cults are going to need to
be good at this season. The one thing that I
keep going back to though, in the red zone, Amanda,
is in the regular season, the Cults are gonna be
(04:33):
running the ball a lot in the red zone. You're
gonna see a lot of, you know, designery type stuff.
I think what they're installing right now are a lot
of sort of base red zone plays that you're not
getting funky with Tyler Warren. You're not you know, doing
you know, weird stuff with pulling offensive linemen on zone reads.
It's just kind of a lot of straightforward type stuff.
(04:55):
You're sort of blackboard. Let's just get this thing down,
and the defense is don't good job with it. I
think hopefully by maybe the end of camp you'll see
a little bit more of an improvement in that, maybe
into that joint practice with the Ravens next week and
then the one with the Packers in two weeks. But yeah,
that's something I'm just going to keep an eye on.
Not something I'm concerned about because again, kind of knowing
(05:17):
the iterations of this offense can have in the red
zone that they're not going to put out here on
the practice field in Grant Park. But just something to
kind of monitor of if the Colts can make any
improvements there before the end of camp.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Yep. Yeah, well, we'll definitely learn a lot more in
these coming weeks when they're facing other teams and with
the preseason games and everything like that. You got to
take it all with a little bit of a grain
of salt right now. Yeah, but we did see I
believe it was in one of the red zone plays.
Ady Mitchell had a really good cut in the end zone. Yeah,
around the defender, had a really nice catch and a
really good throw from Anthony as well.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, that was probably the best throw of the day,
was Anthony Richardson kind of feeding one in through a
tight window to Ady Mitchell in the back of the
end zone. Ad probably should have had two or three touchdowns.
Some throws that were maybe a little inaccurate from the
Colts quarterbacks today, But man Adie Mitchell, the way he moves,
(06:09):
in the way that he separates. I know everyone already
knows this, but it's like you watch this guy play
and you watch the way that he can he sinks
his hips getting out of his brakes and he can celibrate,
and the yeah, if he puts it I know we
keep saying this, but like, if he puts it all together,
this he's going to be really good.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well. And he spoke today after practice, and one thing
about him that it seems to have changed. I don't
want to say like his swagger, because he's he has
a lot of confidence. But there was a question about
kind of what his expectations are for this season, and
he very pointedly said he's just taking it day by day.
He's focused on the meetings that they have today at
two o'clock. He's not looking any further than literally the
(06:49):
next twelve hours basically, which is I think he's becoming
more mature now that he's not a rookie, he's had
a year under his belt. He talked about you know,
you continue to learn from a guy like Reggie Wayne
and the receiver room around him, he seems and not
to say that he wasn't focused last year, but he
had a lot going on last year. He had to
learn all the plays, he had to adjusted as being
in the NFL. Now I think he's he's settled in
(07:09):
and he's becoming more kind of true to himself in
the sense of like he's an NFL player now and
he understands that and now we're seeing it play out
on the field too.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
So preview, Amanda, I had a d yes. I sat
down with ad for next week's episode of the Cult
show give us a Preview, and he talked a lot
about I asked him, like, what's something you can do
this year in training camp that you weren't able to
do last year? And he talked a lot about the
just how you know, it was like it was he
likened it to like a freight train of just like
(07:40):
constant information, constant thought. You're just you're trying to get
to the next thing. But he was like, even when
I would go to sleep, I was just still thinking, thinking, thinking, right.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
And which is good to a certain extent.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Right but it's like, I think this year, he said
he's more calm, and I.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Think that's that's. Yeah, he seems a lot more calm.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
That's a really good thing. You know, being a rookie
hits everyone a little differently, and I think for Ad
it probably hit him a little harder than it might
have some other players. And even though you know, last year,
I think Ad had a good training camp.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
He did, Yeah, because we talked about him.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
All he was productive, but I don't hearing what he
said on the podcast which you can listen to and
that's out on Thursday. Yeah, it felt like to me,
even though he was kind of productive out there, it's
almost like he really knows what he's doing this year
in a way that's different than last year.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Ye.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So, I mean, look, he's still having to fight his
way for reps. Like he's he's mostly been working with
the second team.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
That's a talented receiver room.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
This year it is a deep talented receiver room. So
he's having to fight for every single rep that he gets.
And uh, you know, I think these last couple of
days have been really positive for him. And he's he's
that guy who when he starts stacking days, you can
really see like, Okay, the balls rolling down the hill
here and it's gonna be almost hard to stop. In
(08:59):
a good way, yeah, for him, And it's been encouraging
certainly seeing what he's done out here the last couple days.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Yeah. Well, that's something that Jim Bob Kuter spoke today too.
He touched on is that for receivers sometimes you want
them to get like those twelve thirteen opportunities and you know,
the passes, even if they don't catch them all, just
to adjust to it instead of getting two or three
and to kind of balance that and figure it all out.
And so I think that's something with eighty as well.
We saw kind of once the pads came on, really
is when he started to kind of pop a little
(09:25):
bit more, which is he's not the only one that
that's happened for, so definitely exciting for him to kind
of break through after the first few days of camp
kind of still adjusting two different quarterbacks or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
He's going to be a guy who I'm going to
keep a very close eye on, yep, in joint practices,
in preseason games, you know, kind of getting that different
level of competition in those two settings, how does he
now kind of can he build on this? And again,
man that the talent is just there, it's it's there,
and like if you come out here clearly yeah, like
(09:57):
the guy is an all star in one on ones
because you need help covering the guy, right, And it's
just can he translate all this now into games into
these joint practices. I think that'll give us a decent
indication where he's going to stand going into the regular
season that we should get in the next two weeks.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Here right, right, and someone else, And I think obviously
expectations are high for him as well. Tyler Warren. Not
to like harp on Tyler Warren all the time, but
you kind of have to because he's Tyler Warren. Right.
That for me, going into Baltimore is going to be
really really interesting to see, just like you said, kind
of with ad Mitchell, what that adjustment is like and
what he's like, and you know, we know kind of
(10:38):
everything about him in this in this standpoint, in this setting,
but not necessarily as much what he's going to be
like when he's taking on a new team.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Yeah, I mean, he's he's a guy who when you
get into these joint practices with the Ravens, and then
in that game with the Ravens, Like, how does he
run block? What does it look like when he's he's
out there and it's like it's for real, you can tackle.
You can be that he's a little bit more physical
because out.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
On a lot of his physicality just because you know,
you don't want to hurt somebody.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
I mean, you know, I've watched him in there on
some run plays and he's getting in there and he's scrapping. Yeah,
for sure, but I don't know, it just it's almost
a little bit different when the running backs can get tackled. Yes,
so these preseason games, that's what I'm looking for. I
have no no concerns about him as a pass catcher.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Now, well, a one handed grab on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Now yeah, I mean was that was It's one of
the I saw Rick vent Terry and he goes, that's
one of the best catches I've ever seen out here.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
So you know, hey, it's hard to top.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Hard to top that one. But even just like the
way that he even today, he had a couple of
plays down in the red zone he had two tight
ends or two tight ends, excuse me, two touchdowns from
Daniel Jones where he just he was able to kind
of work into a tight window. Jones made a good
pass getting in the ball, but he just he has
that feel for space and it's not just like how
(11:57):
to get out into open space. It's like if you
have a tight window, he knows where to go within
that window to give his quarterback the best chance to
complete the pass. And then the way that he accelerates too,
he's able to create a little bit of separation on
a kind of just like a drag route for a touchdown.
He's got the whole package as a pass catcher. And
(12:19):
it really, for me, is going to be what does
he do in terms of his physicality in the run game.
That is going to determine what sort of share of
snaps he's gonna get within this offense. Because it's gonna
be high. We know it's gonna out. They're gonna use him, yes,
but it's is he going to be that Like if
we're an eleven personnel and we want to run the football,
can we trust Tyler to be out there? Yeah, that's
gonna be a big thing. I think we're gonna learn
(12:40):
in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Yep. Well, like we said, more exciting stuff to watch
for this week. Lots to watch for this week with
the first preseason game for the Colts against the Ravens
in Baltimore on Thursday, But for now, that'll do it
