Speaker 1 (00:16):
Welcome to Jagsam. I'm Kindannie Stephens, Brian Sexton, John Osier
with me today as Jaguarts prepare for one of their
biggest games so far the season. They're going to take
on the Colts and the winner we'll get bragging rights
and they will be the solo lead of the AFC
South Division. So a lot up for grabs this week.
Let's talk about some big things today, brought to you
by g e h A Government Employees Health Association.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Big thing number one is in return.
Speaker 1 (00:38):
We obviously don't know the extent of Parker Washington's injury.
He did leave the game against the Titans last week, Brian,
but we do know Austin Tramill was also released earlier
this week. So if Parker Washington can't go, what is
this return game going to look like?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
On punts?
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Well, I'm that's a great question and one that we'll
have to talk with the coach about. I would think
that maybe Leaquin Allen, who is a kickoff return guy
who's used to looking up for the ball and not
focusing on the rush. I would think that if Trammel
is released, they have some measure of confidence in Parker
(01:10):
Washington's ability to get back on the field because he
is the backup. You generally don't let that go. I
see this as a positive sign.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, we'll see. I think it'll go up to Sunday
with Parker is just my gut, and you know the
person at this point, I would guess the person with
the surest hands will be assigned to catch punts rather
than focus on returning them. Not quite sure who that'll be,
(01:41):
but it's a storyline. Father Us of the.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Week, something to figure out on practice this week for sure.
Let's go to our second big thig, which is long term.
After the win over the Titans, I think that was
Jacobe Myers's most consistent game we've seen just in the
month that he's been here. But he's also such a
big part of this offense already. John.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I don't know what the new.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Regime likes to do in terms of signing people in
season or they're focused ahead, but he has to be
someone you want to see around your long term.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah. I think the new regime likes to retain good
football players as Sho and this was out of all
the moves, right Travis Hunter. Whatever they did in the offseason,
Djakobe Meyer's at mid season ranks up there with the
best moves This regime has made, has made a dramatic difference.
I would be surprised if something doesn't get done long
(02:27):
term with Jacoby. By the time it becomes an issue
of meeting, I think you'll get them before the end
of season too.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Just in talking to people around the building, they are
so confident in him. They do not want him playing
anywhere else next year, and that's a great sign for
him that the Jaguars will work to get a deal done.
I went back and looked at mid season trades in
Jaguars history. This is right there with the best of them,
and I think the best of them was Marcel Darius
in twenty seventeen. Because the Jaguars that year had a
(02:56):
problem against the run. He immediately shored up the defensive
front and the Jaguars were able to power themselves via
the defense in large part to the AFC Championship game.
This one. If the Jaguars make the playoffs, I think
because of where they were offensively, I think this puts
them in a great position, and it puts Myers up
there with the very best of in season trades.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
And doesn't it feel like he's just calmed things down
for Trevor, somebody he can trust. I mean, it's the
difference he's made, even beyond just his own stats, has
been really significant for the last three or four weeks
of this team three and one, since they acquired Well
and John.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
I also think that he's a guy in that room
with those other receivers who are younger, in particular Brian
Thomas Junior, because of the way that he goes about
his business. Myers is a discipline, detailed guy. I think
for Brian who's trying to get his career back on track,
I think he's the perfect guy on so many fronts.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
Absolutely a great addition to this team, hopefully for a
long time. Let's do our final big thing today, which
is annual traditions.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
It's the holiday season.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Talk about some manual traditions around here, and recently, for
the past decade, it has been beating the Colts in Jacksonville.
They haven't gotten a win here since twenty fourteen. Ryan
can count on that keeping going this weekend or still
take a little something.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Let me count on is a very strong phrase. Kai.
My favorite addition was the twenty twenty one game, where
they had an interim coach and a rookie quarterback, and
all the Colts had to do was come down here
and find a way to just play solid football, and
they make their way into the playoffs. And we were
told after the game that before the game, Trevor Lawrence
(04:34):
went around the locker room, the rookie quarterback, urging his
teammates to put their best on the field, and they did,
winning twenty six to ten. That was a great performance
by a team that really had no reason to perform.
Great John And I'm told that Frank Wright painted that
score in the locker room in Indianapolis for everyone to remember.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah. Look, the last ten years, there's been a lot
of good wins for the JA War was over the Colts.
None of those games mattered, Some mattered, but nothing compared
to this one. Uh seventeen. I forget when they played them,
but it was not a memorable, necessarily game. The Jaguars
(05:15):
have been bad during this streak. Yes, I would trade
four or five or six of those wins for a
win Sunday. I think most Jaguars fans would. This is
a different ball wax than the last nine or ten
games against the Colts in this stadium in a good way.
It's gonna be a great game this Sunday. We'll talk
a lot more about it today and tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Stay with us here on jag Zam. We're gonna do
a little this or that after the break. Jag Zam
brought to you today by Field Auto Group, Seafield's first,
Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. Head Overfield Auto dot Com.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
This, Oh, that's this, Oh, welcome back. Get to jag Van.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
I'm going to play a little this or that today
as we look at this roster, we look ahead. We're
a very exciting game this week, and of course my question.
We talked a little bit about special teams off the
top in terms of what the punk returns are going
to look like if Parker Washington can't go. Not quite
sure on that yet, so we're going to talk a
little bit about the rest of the special teams. Are
you concerned at all? I mean, Logan Coff took a
pretty hard hit, Ross Madisik had to leave the game
(06:22):
due to a back injury.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
He did come back in.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
But special teams, which is something we normally kind of
right off as all set is now a little bit
of a concern right now.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Well, the Mattisik one is the one that would concern me.
Nothing against Von Hamilton, who you know did Yeoman's work
going into the game and covering it. But you saw
how the Titans adjusted. They just set everybody after it,
and the ball was off target both on the extra point,
the immediate extra point after the touchdown and a couple
of those snaps, which is why Logan got hit. So
(06:51):
Mattisik would be the one that would concern me. I
would expect that Logan, even with a shoulder, would be
able to punt.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, I would be concerned, except they have many moves,
So if they were really concerned about those guys, you
would bring in a long snapper, you would bring in
a punter. So I'm not a Wigmathan playing. I wish
they would stay out of fights.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Yeah, yeah, now watching him, you know writhe in pain there,
which we just saw you forget. I mean, you've talked
about a six foot six man who is two hundred
and twenty five two hundred and thirty pounds and a
muscular dude. So I mean it's not like you're asking
Heyden Epstein, right, or or one of the other Jaguars
kickers or punters from years past, to go over there,
(07:38):
Matthew Wright, to go over there and pop a hit
on somebody. This is a big, strong dude.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, maybe just maybe take a little easy on the tackles.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
I'm sure he's been told that a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, yeah, but it was entertaining. We'll give him that,
but we'll keep it out. And I think you are right, John,
the lack of moves maybe makes us feel a little
more safe with that because we haven't seen a ton
of stuff going on. Obviously later in the week we'll
get a better idea of that. But some injuries as
well on the offensive line, and then right before the
game actually, Eric Armstead was scratched due to an injury
last week to his hands. So when it comes to
(08:09):
the trenches, is there any concerns there, John, on either
side of the football with injuries on O line or
D line.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Yeah, you're getting thin. You're playing the number four or
five running attack with the best running back in football.
The Jaguars are the best run defense. Devon Hamilton is
the biggest reason why they're the best run defense, but
he's not the only reason. Yeah, you know, you know,
I want to see forty four in uniform. Forty four
(08:36):
wants to see forty four in uniform. Yes, you would
definitely like to have Eric Armstead pushed in the pocket
in the middle, and you would like to have Trayvon
Walker on the field against the Colts. I mean, there's
a chance, but it's not a definite that these guys play.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
So if you have both of them, you feel really good.
Because the Jaguars run defense, though it's ranked number one,
you were not scared of what the Titans were going
to do running. You bring in the NFL's leading rusher
and Jonathan Taylor, a guy who you might recall had
a huge day thirty four carries in one hundred and
seventy seven yards in the season finale last year. You
(09:14):
need those guys. You have a great chance with them.
That's the concern right now is that Armstead and Treyvon
are going to be limited. But if you've got them
on the field at all, even if it's only for
fifteen to twenty snaps, at least you give yourselves a
chance to shore up. I'm not so worried about the
offensive side of the ball, but the defensive side of
the ball, man Jonathan Taylor is the best.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I will take a moment on the offensive side of
the ball to say cole Van Lannon's about just the
MVP as he plays every single position on the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
What he's been able to do.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
His agent wouldn't you Jack, let's talk.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
I mean he's earned it because to see him play
guard tackle, same game, switching sides, he's been invaluable so far.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yeah, it's funny Cole. I don't know Matt well, but
strikes he is a humble guy. Trevor and Liam both
talked after the game about how resilient and how versatile
the offensive line is. So went back and looked at everything.
It's Cole Van Landon's versatile. Yeah, it's not a knock
on anybody else. It is a versatile line. But I
kind of laugh. They've had lineup changes, but every week
(10:16):
it's cole Van Lannon going in. So they've been a deep,
resilient offensive line, largely because of number seventy. He's a
big part. You might talk about five starters, Bad Bunch
considers this guy's starter as he should be.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Stay with us here on jag Zam after the break
we'll talk a little bit about what's going on around
the NFL. Jag Zam brought to you by Dreamfinders' Homes
for twelve years. Dreamfinders Holmes and be proud to call
themselves the official home builder of the Jacksonville Jaguars, with
(10:52):
a Dreamfinders' Homes dot Com for all of the available inventory.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Welcome back in to jags Am.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Talk a little bit about what's going on around the
league and the AC South in particular, because things are
heating up. Don't look now eight and four Jags, eight
and four Colts and seven and five Texans. Titans will
leave out of it. But Texans beat the Colts obviously,
that was a big game last week. They're improving seven
and five and equipping their way back in. Well.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
John touched on it the other day when we were
talking about the division, and he's right, that is any
elite defense when we talk about some of the best
defenses we've seen in thirty years of covering the league.
I mean, these guys, they're the reason why the Jaguars
lost there last month. I mean, they kept them in
that bowl game, and they're able to keep them in
(11:38):
almost every ballgame now. You've got CJ. Stroud back, even
though he hasn't had a terrific season, that defense gives
you a chance. They are unbelievably good.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah, I'm not sure that team's very much different with
Mills or Stroud frankly.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
But.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I think Mills is really he's evolved, maybe one of
the better backers in the league. But if you had
to tell me what team scares you the most, I
get the Colts are really good and they're in it.
I was gonna say the Texans been. As soon as
I say that it is a division right now, somebody
asks me and the other and who I think will win.
(12:14):
Flip a coin. It is fun. The way the league
set it up. There's still three more games involving these teams.
They set it up right, It is going to be
We're gonna be watching games and checking scores to the
rest of the season.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
You know, It's really fun for those of us who
have covered the South for a while, is all the
people are surprised at the South and they don't spend
that much time looking at the talent that's in the division.
And at some point, when you keep adding it up,
you're going to get to this point, They've done a
tremendous job in Indianapolis and in Houston and obviously here
in Jacksonville of compiling talent and then just week to
(12:51):
week grinding it out. I will say this, and if
I don't whether you looked at the schedule for the Colts,
it is brutal. And so they have got They've got
the twice, They've got the Texans, the Niners, and the Seahawks.
That's their final five games, all playoff caliber teams, all
teams with at least seven wins. It is a brutal
finish to their season.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
And I don't know if I saw a graphics summer.
I'm not even sure where I saw it. People. I
don't tend to lean into everybody overlooks the Jags things
much as most people. But I saw a graphic this
week talking about the race for the number one seed
Denver Patriots and the Colts. Hi, Well, you know this
(13:32):
team's good and we know it. There is a tone
when you read national stuff. And again I don't lean
into this, no, but that it's Texans Colts. Look, this
is a three way deal. And I would say the
Jaguars chances are as good or better than the other
two teams.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Because the schedule's favorable for the Jaguars, who have still
a game against the Jets and the Titans.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
And look, you know you're not to go two socks
on today. So he's my winning socks Ryan with your
winning coffee. Mark. Yeah. Look, this team has beaten five
teams with records of five hundred better. Right, you're eight
and four. You've earned your way to eight and four,
certainly as much as the other two teams in the division.
Now they got to go prove it. But if they
(14:19):
win Sunday, it's six wins out of your nine against
plus five hundred teams.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
Listen, people tend to tag things to this team. So
they look at the nineteen point fourth quarter meltdown in Houston,
they go, ah, they're not that good. They forget that.
A week later, the Colts blew an eleven point lead
in which they handed the ball to the NFL's leading
rusher one time in the fourth quarter. Hello, did anybody
pin them and say what you know? What is that? Nope?
Nobody did.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
And then the.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Jags had that game where there were four turnovers. So
it gives everyone to Jay Well, the quarterback. Okay, well,
did they see what the quarterback did to actually win
the game? And then this week the Jaguars have never
gotten the kind of accolades or credit and maybe they
never will because it's a small market and every but
I get your point because I've seen it myself.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Well, look at I'm praising the Texans. They think they're
really good, but they're terrific beaten Titans by three Jaguars.
You know, I'm not compared to scores guy either, but
the logic that this team isn't in it. Look, I'm tired.
Go let's just kick.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
It off and I'm just get to mar Jen. Wars
are the only team to score more than twenty points
against the Texans in the last six weeks.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Making it happen.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Let's talk a little bit more about in the division.
We are playing the Colts this week. Sauce Gardner, who
the Colts went out there they're clearly going for this year,
went all out, created a couple of first round picks
for them, left the game with a calf straight and
they're calling it week to week at this point, So
it doesn't look like it's an Achilles' injury that's going
to keep them out for the rest of the season.
But that's a tough loss for them when they kind
of went and all in on.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
That, I'd be starting to see him on the field
on Sunday, not with as many games against contenders left
on the schedule. It's one of those things where you
want to have him. They're getting back Tarvarius Ward. I
think he was back on the field last week and
they thought, Okay, now we've got these two corners that
we were planning on for the stretch run. It's kind
of the way it goes. And if he does not
(16:12):
come back this year, or isn't a factor, or they
don't make the playoffs because of their schedule, how good
do they feel about giving up two number one picks
in the next two years for a corner.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yeah, injuries are going to be a topic Sunday. You're
at the point where whoever was out there going to
play Bagree. You're at the point now where you'd almost
wear a Sea Sauce gardner out there because you wonder
how effective he could be. The Jaguars. I think the
edge there for them would be one thing we haven't
(16:44):
talked about a whole lot on these shows. Is how
much they have played through Guys, are you not being
out there? You know you're on a four game or
three wins in four games without Eric Murray? Who's your
communication guy? Jordan Luis is getting back Trayvon hasn't been
Trayvon since Week two, and yet you're still building and
(17:05):
looking like you're an improving team. That is probably the
Jaguar storyline this year that we will look back on
once the season's over with and think, wow, that was
an impressive job of keeping the ship afloat.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
The other thing that we haven't really talked about, the
Jacks are four and one here in Jacksonville, right. They
have built a bit of a home field advantage on Sunday.
If they get to five, they will tie the ten, seventeen,
and twenty two teams four third in most wins at home.
The most wins at home in franchise history is seven
(17:43):
set four times, ninety six, ninety seven, ninety eight, and
ninety nine. Those are all great playoff teams, right, and
you have a chance to do that. So for people
who are thinking about coming out because I know their
tickets still available, the Jaguars have played well in front
of the home crowd. They could use the home crowd
this week, and I think if you get this one,
you'll probably get the seven and one.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Final thing. If you're watching this maybe on minds what
Brian's talking about. And again I'm wearing my winning socks
since Cincinnati. If you had three losses, they were the Texans,
the Rams, and the Seahawks, who right now may be
among the best six or seven teams in football. This
team is good and they got a chance to show
(18:26):
it on Sunday, and.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Then I don't want to just step over. You're sorry
you mentioned earlier. They have a lot of quality wins.
It's not like they've just been beating up on the
bottom of the schedule. They're gonna do that next couple
of weeks with the Jets and the Titans again. But
they've got quality wins.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
They're earning it for sure.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Stay with us on jag Zam.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
We'll tell you what's coming up the rest of the
week after the break, DAGs fans, if you want customized
Jaguars furniture for your home, check on zipcha dot com
to browse all the customizable options and zip Chair is
furniture for fans and this weekends upcoming game versus the Cults,
presented by Hyundai Test Drive a new Hunday today only
(19:04):
at your local Hundai dealer, and we're shilling tickets. You
guys definitely want to be there. I don't know how
much more we can talk this up, because this is
a game that at the bank I think maybe since
two thousand.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
It was a Saturday night game, so it was primetime
and Mike Vrabel came in with Joshua Dobbs right who
had just pulled off the Cleveland to practice squad or
Detroit practice squad a few weeks before, and dart if
it didn't go to the end right, Rayshawn Jenkins made
that play where he stripped the ball and josh picked
it up and returned it for a touchdown. It was
an incredible theater and no one expected it to be.
(19:41):
Everyone just thought, well, you know, I mean, they're limping
to the finish and it was a hell up finish
and it was a lot of fun. So I if
this is even fractionally as much fun as that one was,
watch out.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
Yeah. And this is a different season than that that team,
you know, well, it's a team that should be a
member finally, but it came back, much like the ninety
six team, where you really didn't believe it until late.
This team four and one, start, four and three, and
now two three game winning streaks in a row. I
(20:13):
think this team is figuring out that it's good, yeah,
because it hasn't been good before. I think the fans
need to realize what they're doing now. This is what
I think it's going to be for a while. Get
used to good games the second half of the season
that matter. I keep saying it for years. I've been
getting emails, when are we going to be good? When
(20:36):
is this? When is this? When is this? This is it? Yeah?
This is the fun stuff. This is what you will
remember when you're an old man like me about when
you were thirty five and watching the Jaguars. These are
the times to remember. Well.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
People, you know, they're like, oh, you always bring up
the nineties, Yeah, because those were great football teams. What
they're building here is the foundation to do exactly what
Tom Kaughlin did back then and build something that lasts.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
All right, guys, we'll be back here tomorrow for ja
exam full show all about that Cults game. As we
get ready for the matchup at every Bank Stadium on Sunday,
