Speaker 1 (00:16):
Welcome to jag Zam today Kennannie Stephen, Harry, Brian Sexton
and John Oser and a frustrating loss in Houston. What
was a huge divisional matchup for the Jaguars as they
blow a twenty nine to ten lead in the fourth quarter,
as the Texans battle all the way back and they
get a win. So let's go over our big things
from me yesterday. There's a lot to go over today,
brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association Benefits
(00:38):
for federal employees and retiree zero is big thing number one.
There was no resistance from the defense in that fourth
quarter as the Texans just imposed their will on offense,
driving up and down the field and scoring twenty six
unanswered points to win the game. William Cohen talked a
little bit about the non existence pass rush and some
of the issues on defense.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
The whole message was to squeeze the life out of
these guys in the second half and go take it,
go take it. And it's been a frustration for a
while now, obviously the combination of lack of getting to
the quarterback and when we do finishing it. But it
(01:19):
definitely needs to continue to get evaluated and see who
can help us do those things too.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Brian pass rush has been a problem, but just the
defense as a whole, kind of letting the text and
dictate that whole fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, listen, we knew that the Jaguars had to help
a beleaguered secondary. You were playing without Travis Hunter, who's
your best corner, and Jordan Lewis, who's been the glue
that's held that secondary together. Both of the safeties that
you intended to start the season with are an injured reserve.
You needed the pass rush and John The story all
week had been that the Jaguars pass rush against the
Texans in September was the reason in large part that
(01:53):
they won that game. Two backups, a rookie left tackle
and they got zero nothing now credit on a play
where it appeared that the penalty on Jerry Jones was
bogus right, It looked like he had made a good
play hand fighting with Christian Kirk down the field. All
they needed was one play, one play that may have
(02:14):
changed the fourth quarter and stopped the Texans momentum. But
they couldn't even get one.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, I think that's what's most frustrating. Until that fourth quarter.
The Texans hadn't done anything offensively really all year, so
it's got to be frustrating for people watching it. There
were moments where they got pressure the Jaguars. The problem
right now is not that individuals aren't getting it. Josh Allen,
Josh Heines Allen talks all the time about pass rush
(02:40):
being a collective. When guys would get pressure, there was
nothing there to help. There wasn't enough. Maybe they wore down,
I don't know, but it was twenty four dropbacks in
the fourth quarter and no sacks and you couldn't get
him off the field. So not good enough.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, half of the Texans plays thirty three are close
to thirty three of their sixty nine were in the
fourth quarter. So the defense was on the field a
ton too. Our big thing number two is one because
the offense didn't help much out in the fourth quarter.
Either went three and out, three and out and then
three and a sack strip sack fumble that ended that
being a touchdown. So Trevor Lawrence talked a little bit
(03:18):
about the frustration of not putting that game away.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
You know, give all the credit to them there.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
They are really good defense. So they made some plays
today where you know, good good defense, good teams are
gonna make plays. But also feel like we left some
stuff out there that we had some opportunities and we
just have to be better and make those moving forward.
We need them. You know. We got to play better offensively,
We've got to move the ball better.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
We got to score more.
Speaker 5 (03:41):
Had a lot of short fields today and we just
got to take advantage of that and be able to,
you know, put a team away when you got them.
You got them down that much, and you got to
be able to finish and put the game away.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
John, The defense allowed the points to be scored, but
the offense couldn't get a first down, They couldn't run
any clock.
Speaker 6 (03:57):
In the fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, and you know when this kind of game happens,
all my inboxes Trevor this, Trevor that. And I don't
know if he played that great, but it looked in
the fourth quarter like the pass rush was getting home
way too fast on him. You're down, like Brian talked
about the secondary, you're down your top three receivers entering
(04:19):
training camp and you're down to Parker Washington and a
lot of guys who were just called up. It's such
a league of moments, right, Brian Yep. At the very
end of the game, they had Parker Washington clearing on
a huge play and the one area where the Blitz
can get home got home and Trevor had to run
(04:39):
the other end of the game play they had a
play to Parker Washington would have put Cam Little in range.
All of a sudden, a penalty, all those things were
not talking about OUs. We're talking about what a great victory,
but it was. It was just all around. I guess
I don't quite know how to analyze this one because
there was so much in so many moments soever on well, I.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Want to I want to give them credit to Trevor.
The stats say and the results say that he was
middle of the pack average yesterday. But there were a
couple of moments. Remember when Jarion Jones knocked the ball
away at the end of the third quarter and the
Jaguars had it right there at their own forty two
yard line with a minute twenty nine to play in
the third. Okay, here's your moment, right, here's a chance
(05:19):
for you to go and essentially put the game away.
I thought if you went up twenty nine to ten,
not that I knew they were going to miss the
two point conversion, but I thought another touchdown would have
done it, and he did it. And on that drive
he was under intense pressure and he got outside the
pocket and he threw the ball to Johnny Munt, who
made a play. Johnny Munt, the third tight end who's
been unimpressive this season. Then a little bit later on
(05:41):
that drive, he threw an absolute beautiful strike to Austin
Trammel at the sixteen yard line, which helped set up
the touchdown run. He made some plays to give his
team a chance to win the game. And then as
you just mentioned there is with a strike to Parker
Washington that sets up a sixty one yard field goal
attempt to win the ball game. By the way, that's
(06:03):
in your kickers range. He did enough at the end
to find a way to win the game. Was he perfect?
Speaker 5 (06:09):
No?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Was he better than average? Probably not? But it wasn't
all on Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
No.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
I think that I'll get bet my hot take today,
but plenty of blame here. Our final big thing today
is gonna be two and three. If there's one player
that can probably go to sleep last night and know
they played well, that's Parker Washington had two touchdowns on
the day. He had a punt return for touchdown. That's
his third career punt return touchdown, and talked a little
bit about what he saw on that second touchdown.
Speaker 7 (06:36):
The very first punt return, I was upset that I
got tackled cause that debsoutely a big one too, So
we got another opportunity. I caught it. I just saw
a whole bunch of guys and I was like, let's
make a miss, Let's make a mom mixtend out for
the funner. And it was cool to make a play,
but like, we fell short, but we're gonna come back
(06:57):
and respond.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
To Brian, I shut her to think what that game
would have looked like without Parker Washington in it, because
he was most, if not all, of the bright spots
in that game. And after a tremendous training camp from
what we saw from him, to come and now actually
have this time to shine it.
Speaker 6 (07:11):
I'm thankful for him for sure.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
You know, I shud here to think about what this
season might look like without Parker Washington. Yeah, I know
he had the drops in Los Angeles, partner in London
against Los Angeles. I've covered every game this team has
ever played. He is the best punt returner that this
team has ever had, by the way. The numbers back
that up. He's got two in a single season, which
is a Jaguars record. He's got three now for his career,
which breaks the record that he held with Reggie Barlow.
(07:34):
But he just has that pension for delivering a big
play when this team needs it, whether you're asking him
to catch a ball over a much taller corner and
get his feet down in the back of the end zone,
or to make a play on special teams when you
need to flip the field and flip momentum. And he's
done it. By the way, he should have three this season.
There was one callback on a penalty in that game
(07:56):
against London, and I'm going to guess that he's going
to have another opportunit unity to do that this year
and to maybe get his third.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Yeah, he's been remarkable. I mean it. He he comes
into training camp as the fourth receiver Ota has forgotten,
and then you guys were out there every practice You're like,
it need the best way, it need the best wide
receiver on the field, and like, no, I can't be
Parker watching it's gotta be Brian tim STEENM it's gotta
be you know, and well and the hole gets into
the season and he's still the best. The shame of
(08:24):
it is Parker Washington. When you built this team, Parker
Washington is supposed to be one of three or four
guys on it. He was supposed to be the guy
who came out of nowhere and complimented a lot of
other things. Uh, right now he's the guy, and you
need a couple more.
Speaker 6 (08:41):
Guys, need some more guys.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
So Sarah on Jack Zam, we're gonna go over the
tape from yesterday's loss against the Texas.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
Welcome back into Jags day and today a frustrating one,
to say the least in Houston yesterday. We're gonna look
at some of the video. Start out early because things
were decent at this point. Yeah, for staff stuff, because
you got to you had a couple plays. I'll say
Jarian's interception incredible read risky of course, but comes through
(09:29):
and gets the interception, So commend him for that. But
then also the special teams play where the Texans fumble
the kickoff and two things going your way that early.
That's not something we always see, and you feel like
that's good omen for.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
The day, right for a team that needed this lift.
Jerry and Jones gave it to them early. I mean
that the smoke was on these guys who were going
to be on the field in place of Jordan Lewis,
and I thought that was a great sign. And by
the way, he played a really good game. I thought,
you know, the break up, the pass breakup at the
end of the third quarter, and then the row down
to Christian Kirk. I thought Jerry and Jones played maybe
(10:03):
his best game.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
I was uber impressed with Jarion Jones. Hopefully for his sake,
this is what he's going to be. And look early
it felt like they were doing they needed to take
more advantage of some of the breaks they got early
to get more up. But it felt, to liams Cohen's credit,
it felt like a game where you're gonna have to
(10:25):
sort of stack points, get up and then sort of
hold on. You thought you could do it against this
kind of Texans offense. When you get a ten to
nothing lead, seventeen to nothing lead, you feel like you've
gotten yourself in a game situation where it's gonna work.
And they got some gifts early. You know it was
shaping up.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
That was a great play by Ventre Miller ye to
force that.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Yep, that's true out coming up with it for sure
on special teams. Both of those were huge plays and
our two highlights of the day. I separate them because
you know, we need double dose of Parker. But the
first touchdown from Parker with the toe tap in the
back of the end zone. Then I had to watch
couple times because he had black sneakers on. He's gonna
wear brighter color shoes, I think. But it's tremendous. I mean, John,
we've talked about him being mister Reliable now for this team,
(11:09):
and he's proving it to be true.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
Yeah, and he sort of belies what you think. When
you watch him in practice, you think, oh, this is
a slot guy. This is like Christian Kirk part two.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Right.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
That was always his comparison because he was following Christian.
But then he he's spectacular when he gets it. He's
not just like a little slot receiver run around the
middle of the field. He's made high point the ball
in traffic as spectacular catches. This kid's really good.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Go back to his rookie season, the Cleveland game, the
second half especially. They lost that game, but he made
a couple of clutch catches where he had to elevate
and you weren't sure that a five foot nine wide
receiver could get up that high to make plays. He
has consistently made plays anytime they've asked him, whether it's
on offense or on special teams. He's just a really
good football play.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
He's really good.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
To take a look at the punt return because Brian
you mentioned he's impressive, probably the best you've seen in
Jaguar's history, but also just he just when he goes
with it, when he just kind of.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Goes with his first instincts. This is what we see
half the time well, and I.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Love the way that he sets this one up. You
know he made that move at the outside and then
cut back across the grid. Watch him lift his hand
here near the forty five yard like he knew he
was gonna score. He is, he's a supremely confident athlete.
Now I'd like to see him run across the goal line.
I say, I don't think I did not like that
part of it at all, get across the goal line.
But other than that, I mean, we're gonna get another
(12:30):
look at his little movie with the outside of the
little stutter step. He's just he's really impressive, really impressive
with the ball in his hands.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Well he sometimes I get emails from fans when he's
returning kicks. Why does any just go? You know, like
sometimes he sort of, but he's in punt returning is
a different beast than kick returning. Kick Connie, you just
get Parker has really good upon return. A long time ago,
(12:59):
he told me the key is patience. If it was
set up your box. He's a very patient returner, and
he can see it. He's got point guard type vision
back there when he's returning kicks. And you'll find a
lane every couple games.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Well, listen that you just set it up. He set
them up. He saw them flowing to that side of
the field, and he saw the cutback lane. But even
when you see it, not everybody has the quickness to
be able to turn and get back to it. I mean,
Maurice Jones. Drew is the other guy who is a
great return again a diminutive guy, but had really good
feet and the ability to cut it back. When I
(13:32):
watch him cut it back, it reminds me of moretos.
Speaker 6 (13:35):
Hi Craze there.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Absolutely, let's uh, we're gonna condense some of the pain
from the fourth into just one or two pieces of
video here.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
But three pain I ripped the band aid off yet three.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Touchdowns in a row here, the defense just Davis Mills
of all people to be kind of putting this all together.
We know the secondary's been struggling for you know, with injuries,
so Jarring Jones stepping up great, but the safety has
been with a lot Antonio Brown and excuse me, Antonio
Johnson and Dewy Winger struggling in the middle there. And
(14:07):
then on that last Davis Mills rushing touchdown, it just
feels like people were not in the right place on
that one.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Well it there's what sixty seventy five quarterbacks in the NFL, right,
the seventy fifth can beat you if you don't pressure him.
They can all throw and you have to pressure backup
quarterbacks into mistakes and then they'll throw you. The ball
every couple series. They didn't pressu him in any mistakes
(14:34):
in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Well, and then they got him on the run, but
everybody's back was to him. That was the most frustrating
play of the game at Davis Mills, who's a statue
compared to C. J. Stroud was basically given a lane yep.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
And they had a couple of penalties too, and back
themselves up. Then all of that and then Drag's final drive.
They have it with thirty seconds left and there's a
couple aspects to this right, so they're gonna have to
throw it right the offensive line immediately. Just the pass
rush from the Texans is on Trevor immediately, you get
this great throat to Park of Washington to kind of
(15:08):
get him in range as mentioned, and there's a penalty
on Chium Minidoga. And then the final play of the
game again people are on him immediately. He's not gonna
be able to throw it anywhere at that point and
get out of bounds. So it didn't really matter it played, didn't.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
Matter, but the one they got called back on the
penalty on Adoga. This I was complaining before the game
as a matter of fact, that the NFL has made
two minute or these final drives. To me, it happens
a little too often these days, and I'm the old
(15:42):
man here. But they got themselves in that situation. They
made the play with thirty seconds left. If you could
have said to any fan, hey, you can get a
sixty one yarder with Cam Little, you would have taken
it at that point. They got in that situation. And
you know, again, the penalties have this team all year,
penalties in the big moments. If that play doesn't happen,
(16:04):
we're talking about a hero is.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Can I just point out kind of problem at left
tackle right now? I mean it was very obvious in
recent weeks, the Seahawks game, the Rams game, and now here.
It's going to be an area of the Jaguars half
to your quarterback. If you want him, especially in two
minute situations, to be able to lead your team down
the field, he can't have a guy at his feed.
He just can't. You've got to figure out what's going
(16:26):
on at left tackle. And maybe Brenton Stranger's return this
week helps Walker a little over there, but that looks
like a real weak spot on the offensive line right now.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
You have to hope so because also every single week
they're going to be going up against the best pass
rusher in the league.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
That's not going away. They're going to see some really
good pass rushers and the quarterback has no chance unless
they solve that issue.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
All right, coming up after the break, we're gonna give
you our hot takes about yesterday's game and going forward.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
Welcome back to jag Jay.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
I'm brought to you by Firehouse Subs today specifically bringing you.
Speaker 6 (16:56):
Our hot takes. Alright, it was a tough one.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
You guys are a little more forward thinking than I am.
Maybe I should go first. Actually, now I'm thinking about
this cause mine's a little more reactionary, and I think
people might resonate with a little cause I still got
smoke for everybody today. Mine is that there's plenty of
blame to go around, because I know I've seeing twitter
s s feels like it's split right, it's the defense
(17:22):
blew the game, and then it's everything is Trevor's fault.
Speaker 6 (17:24):
How about it's both of their falls.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
The defense couldn't get a stop Trevor Lawrence and the
offense couldn't get a first down.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
Did he do enough?
Speaker 1 (17:30):
At the very very end maybe, but then there's penalties
to go around. The offensive line was terrible. Trevor was
pressured pretty much all day. I think some of the
play calling in the second half could have run it
a little bit.
Speaker 6 (17:41):
On that one play when you couldn't.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Get a first down, it was to think third and
three or third and four. There's an option to do
that there, especially when you're having trouble getting things going
in the passing game. At points other than Parker Washington,
I think everybody takes.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
A little bit of blame in this. We didn't see
the special team.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Slipping the field the way we normally do, as well
with with Logan Cook. I think on defense there was
no pass rush. There's a lot there's a lot of things.
I'm gonna let it go after today, but mondays, when
we go back and look at the film, I think
there's a lot of not finger pointing in the sense
of you you, you, But I think we all need
to look a little inward and say that everybody should
have been better yesterday and going forward. I think they
(18:17):
can do that, But when you keep looking at yourself
as the reason you're losing a game, you have to
kind of man up and fix it at some point.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
You feel better now a little bit?
Speaker 6 (18:25):
All right, John, you're next.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
Well, yeah, I went a little more forward because when
I was sitting and listening to Liam Cone in the
press conference, you know, it was a tough press reform
because you're deflated, right, and he is such an up
guy and he's done such a great job of holding
(18:49):
this thing together in the belief. So I think this
is gonna be as tough ast test yet. And he said, hey,
we got to move forward. That was his message of
the team he started right after the game. I think
he'll pass it. I mean, I think he's really good
with these guys and really good at setting the message
and getting these guys ready. But you know, the difference
between six and three and five and four is big,
(19:10):
and you know they were right in it, and now
five and four there's a lot more trees you have
to navigate in the force. And then this was a
gut punch yesterday. I mean, we talked about the Titans
game at the end of twenty three being such a
gut punch. This doesn't match that because that end of
the season. But you're you know, you've got I had
(19:30):
a story written everybody did, and now all of a sudden,
you're you know, punched back and I get a step
forward against the Chargers team. If you lose that, you're
four to the last five and then the noise. So
this is a this is the biggest test yet.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
Yeah it is. And if I'm excited for anything, I'm
excited to see how Liam Cohen handles it.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
Right.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
I think all of us have been impressed with him.
Oh and the way that he coaches this team. So
I'm kind of a growth mindset guy. The obstacle is
the opportunity, and I really think it's an opportunity for
this coach this week to drive his team where other
Jaguars teams could not be driven through this. I mean,
this go feel like a hangover this morning when these
guys come back in a really bad one and he's
(20:11):
got to get them through that today because if this
thing lingers much past tomorrow, then you have a chance
of letting the Texans beat you twice, right, and you
can't have that. So I'll go because I'm I'm gonna
be the ray of sunshine here.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
I heard the optimist.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Well it's just my natural personality anyway, But I listen
with a nod to a gentleman that you knew Jim
mood playoffs, playoffs. Yeah, despite the way that yesterday happened
and it sucked, the reality of it is is that
the Jaguars are right where they If we had heard
five and four right early on in the number seven
(20:46):
spot at the midway point of the season, every one
of us would have taken it, because we know what
this is now. I'm not excusing yesterday, and I know
what happened yesterday. But the Jaguars have eight games left.
They have four games against teams with playoff caliber football
teams two against the Cold the Chargers this week and
one against the Broncos, and four against teams that are
just finishing out their season two against the Titans, the Cardinals,
(21:07):
and the Jets. Four of those games, pardon me, two
of each of those categories, playoff and non playoff are
at home, so you have a distinct opportunity. I thought
this was a nine win team. You can get to
nine by just winning the games against the teams that
you should now go steal one, right, beat the Chargers
here at home, find a way to take one from
(21:28):
the Colts, which you think you should be able to do.
It's a division matchup. Figure a way to steal one,
you win ten. And when you look at the playoff
picture right now, right, the Jaguars, it think won yesterday,
they would have been ahead of the Bills.
Speaker 6 (21:42):
Bill's talking me back in so listen.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
The Bills got hammered. The Bills got hammered yesterday by
the Dolphins in South Florida. There's a lot that can
happen over the final eight games of the season. And
a little bit more optimism. You're gonna get Brenton Strange back, right,
You're gonna get Brian Thomas Junior back. And since I'm
being optimistic, I'm going to say that he's going to
turn it on and start playing better football. You're gonna
get some pieces back, win the games that you should win,
(22:07):
Steal one, just one, and you're a playoff team. The
playoffs very much in the forefront for this football team.
Do they have to get through this week? Yes, The
next two days is going to be tough. Absolutely. I
believe in this coach and I think he can get
his team there.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
Swilight go last. Feel better about this now, right, let's
go start it out a little hot. But now.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Say listen a world more break. We'll come back tell
you what's coming up the rest of the week. Jag
XAM and the upcoming Jaguars Charger game this weekend is
delivered by CSX. Also, if you want to donate blood
and save lives on the Big Red Bus at the
annual Tealgate Blood Drive on November twenty second at Daily's Place.
Blood donors score a free Jaguars home game ticket. For
(22:52):
more info on that, you can go to one blood
dot com slash Jaguars. All right, so we're back here,
we've moved on. Brian gave us a pep time. Brent's
range is back this week.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
Yeah, that's good news.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
That's a great reason to smile.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
I mean he we've talked about him obviously endlessly, but
an offensive target for Trevor and he helps with this
line that is closely struggling right now.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Well, he's he's been crucial to the run game, giving
him probably fifteen twenty yards a game somewhere. That's you
don't think about. And before he got hurt, he was
Trevor's go to receiver on third down and probably twice
a game if you go back and to think about
those games. Twice a game, Trevor sort of went instinctively
(23:35):
to him for a third down conversion. Two third down
conversions in games or big deals.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
If you've got one of those fourth quarter, yes today,
maybe you win. He matters. By the way, I was
watching him in the practice field last week as he
was working his way back, and by the way, this
is the week that the practice window could be opened.
He's so big and explosive. Now he's not six foot
six like some tight ends around you're a bin, but
he's just this big, one wide, strong body. And I
was watching him explode. You know. They were just doing
(24:04):
this drill, and I thought, man, did they need that?
They gotta have that.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
They need him back, and he will be ready to
go when they do make him available, so hopefully sooner
than later. Alright, So with this one today, we'll be
back on Wednesday as we look forward to the Jaguars
game against the Chargers.
Speaker 6 (24:20):
Enjoy the week,
