Hi.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
For the eighth time, Collins Basketball National Championship Trophy is
coming home to Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Now your host, Jaron Hendrick.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
March Madness is here. The brackets have been revealed, and
we welcome you into BBN Radio presented by Clark's Pumpin' Shop.
I'm Darren Hedrick. Sunday Night, the Kentucky women's basketball team
finally found out after a week long wait, just where
they will be going and who they will be playing
in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats
(01:28):
will go to Morgantown, West Virginia as the five seed
in the Fort Worth Regional and they will take on
twelfth seed at James Madison, which is coach Kenny Brooks
alma mater and a place where he coached for a
long time. And so the Cats will take on the
Duke's Saturday, March twenty first in the opening round at
(01:48):
two point thirty pm. Our airtime will be two fifteen
for the broadcast on the UK Sports Network. So after
the Wildcats found out they'll be headed to Morgantown, we
caught up with Kentucky's point guard Tony Morgan and got
her reaction on finding out the destination and opponent.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
I mean, very exciting. I mean, it's not too far
from Kentucky, you know, but we're super excited to be
able to keep going, keep dancing and make a run
in the tournament.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
How big is it after a week long wait to
finally know, Hey, this is where we're going. Let's go
get ready.
Speaker 6 (02:18):
I mean, we're just happy that we actually know where
we're going, we know who to prepare for because we've
been focusing on ourselves this past week or so. So
we're just very excited.
Speaker 7 (02:27):
Here.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
You've been through conference tournaments, you've been through an NCAA
tournament with your prior school. What's the biggest key to
this first round game against you know, maybe a team
that doesn't have the name, but they're going to come
in with a lot of talent and playing well too.
Speaker 6 (02:39):
I mean, it's March.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Everybody's good.
Speaker 6 (02:42):
You can't underhanst meet any opponent, but you have to
come in knowing who you are as well. You have
to be confident in ourselves and focus on ourselves because
this is a big game.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
One game out of time.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Is just focus on ourselves. This may sound like a
funny question, but you've been through the conference and then
you played these teams again in a conference tournament. Are
you excited to see somebody brand new this week?
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Absolutely?
Speaker 6 (03:01):
I mean, I mean it's fun playing to see of course,
screen teams every night, but it's fun to just get
a new field and new style of basketball.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
So this should be a good one.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Tony coach has talked about how this team is built
for the NCAA tournament, and you guys have been through
a lot this year. Tell me how going through the
SEC has prepared this team for whatever you'll see in
the tournament.
Speaker 6 (03:19):
Yeah, the SEC is one of the best, if not
the best leagues in the country. We're stat one through sixteen,
and we fought day and day out throughout the conference
as everybody knows. But this has definitely prepared us for
anything that's thrown at us because we're battle tested and
we got some rest and we're healthy, so now we're ready.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
To go get them.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
And you guys have played on the road, playing especially
in the non conference, and it feels like this team
is felt at home being the visinessing team. Tell me
a little bit about the personality of this group.
Speaker 6 (03:44):
Oh, I mean, I like the I like to call
it a villain villain mentality, like you like to go
on out to its home and then you know, just
do our thing. But we I mean, that's besides the
point for the most part is still focusing on ourselves
and being the best version of ourselves as we stepped
into basketball because to march, because we haven't played our
best basketball yet.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Now that you were finished with the conference tournament, as
we talked about you had that week. How big was
that for this team just to kind of reset heel
up and then get back in the practice court.
Speaker 6 (04:09):
It was great to get a lot of resk because
this team, Like I said, this.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
League bangs up a little bit.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
Being able to get some rest and get a lot
of shots up, fine tuning some things we've been doing
all week.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
It's been good for.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Us having gone through the SEC. Now, what was that like,
experiencing the grind for the first time and becoming better
as a player for it?
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Absolutely?
Speaker 6 (04:26):
I mean, like you said, we're battle tested, and myself,
I feel like it's made me better and understanding the
things I need to work.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
On and just be tough.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
Just come out, be tough, and Marx's built for tough teams,
so we got to show that.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
I've been wanting to ask you about the fact that
you rewrote Georgia A. Moore's assist record this year and
you've put yourself among like the top five assists leaders
in the SEC. When you came here, did you ever
think you would have a season like that, facilitating the
way you have?
Speaker 6 (04:50):
I wouldn't say. I don't know how to answer that question,
because I didn't come into here thinking out with, like,
you know, set record. Yeah, I mean, but I didn't
want to put any limits on what I could do
on my final season, so I came in here. But
opened my open heart and just ready to embrace it all.
So that's how I like to think about it.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Let me ask it this way. What's it been like
trying to learn coach Brooks's system and adapt to it
as quickly as you have this year?
Speaker 6 (05:16):
I mean, he runs a pro style system, so I
think it's been great to take this year and get
a little jump start in that. But I mean, I
mean it's I'm not going to say it's been easy
because it hasn't. Let you know, it's definitely been a
learning process. But he's been great helping me. My teammates
have been great, all the coaches staff, they just want
me to be They want me to be the best
version of myself, and I think they all believe in me,
(05:37):
and that makes me feel really good about myself and
about them as well.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
So Tony, it's been a great season for this group
to this point. Good luck, Let's play for a couple
more weeks, how about it?
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Yes, thank you, thank you?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
And that was Kentucky point guard Tony Morgan. We also
got some time with head coach Katy Brooks and got
his thoughts on the bracket reveal.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
No surprise, I don't think it's a whole lot of
creativity to go on the end of that.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
And I guess Charlie Cream.
Speaker 8 (06:00):
As well, just put the put the brackets out there
on the first day, and they must, they must take
a lot of credit from that and they follow it.
But at least we know now, and you know, there's
no more speculation. At least you know, and you can
start getting ready for an opponent.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Uh you have talked about how this team is built
for the NCAA tournament and built from March. Why is that?
Why do you feel that way about this group?
Speaker 8 (06:21):
Well, they're battle testing number one. You go through a
nineteen game grueling sec schedule.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
We're we're a veteran group.
Speaker 8 (06:28):
And uh so we're just looking for the opportunity and
you know, we didn't we had a little bit of
a bump in the road early in January when Tiani
got hurt. But we're just looking forward opportunity to play.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
And show who show who we can be.
Speaker 8 (06:40):
And you know, now we have an opponent, we have it,
we have a destination and we'll get ready to go
and we'll have a really good week of practice.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
It's tony this question. Now that you've gone through the
conference regular season and then you saw the same teams
in the tournament. How excited are you to see somebody
new and scout a new opponent, even though the first
round is a little familiar.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Yeah, I mean we're we are.
Speaker 8 (07:00):
I mean that's what the ncl A tournament is about.
So postseason is about and we're just we're just looking
forward to it. And there's a lot the week is
a long week because there's a lot of speculation. Uh,
but now and there's you know, there's a certainty and
now you just have to go out. You have to
get ready and you have to game plan and uh,
and so it'll.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
Be really good.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I thought your team played well in that SEC tournament.
How do you feel like they've gotten better now that
Tiani's back and they continue to just gel out there.
Speaker 8 (07:25):
Well, every game they got they got more and more
comfortable with each other after the reinvention of ourselves and uh,
you know, their fun group to be around, their fun
group to coach, and uh, they're starting to mesh and
play well together. And uh, so you know that this
is a really good time for us to be doing that,
and we want to capitalize on it.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
And uh, we're just happy.
Speaker 8 (07:43):
I mean, obviously when we got here, you know, there
there was a lot we wanted to do with this program.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
And you know, two straight years we've made it to
the n.
Speaker 8 (07:51):
C l A Tournament, and uh, that's a great foundation
for us and hopefully we can make a nice run here.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Since we just talked to Tony Morgan, I'll ask you
how she's really coming to this embraced your system and
become one of the best facilitators in the country.
Speaker 8 (08:03):
She's done a phenomenal job and obviously is no it's
no easy task when you follow you know, an All
American and especially in All American who have been with
the coach four or five years, and she's come in
and just put her own little twist on everything. And
I've been very proud of her the way that she's
done that. And as a result, you know, we've been
we become a really good basketball team and we've been
able to you know, continue to rise. And it's been
(08:25):
a lot of fun this year with her, and you know,
she's definitely left her mark into history books but also
in a lot of other ways.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
So very very happy for her.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
We saw this last year, or actually you've seen it
the last few years with Georgia Amore and now Tony
this year the NCAA Tournament, you can get into games
where it's possessioned by possession and each one matters. How
big is it to have a point guard of this
caliber when you get into the tournament.
Speaker 8 (08:46):
It's very big, you know, And obviously you know you
need to be connected to hit with your point guard.
And you know, thirty thirty some games with Tony and
you know, we've gotten more and more connected as the
season's going on. And I'm looking forward to her having
a really good, really good weekend and uh, and she
can do so I think gives us a chance to win.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
It always helps when you have the six to five
center and then some wings that can shoot the three.
Speaker 7 (09:07):
Right.
Speaker 8 (09:07):
Yeah, yeah, it does, I mean besides all over the place.
And uh, and hopefully everyone continues doing what they were doing.
And uh, we'll just continue on and we're just we're
just happy to have the opportunity.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
To go out here and play on a national stage.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Coach last question for you, Tony mentioned the reason why
this team at times has felt like they're at home
on the road, it's because they're used to it, because
of your non conference schedule. But also she says, I
like that villain role. You got to have that kind
of mentality in this tournament, don't you.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Yeah, we've embraced that. You know, all year long.
Speaker 8 (09:34):
We've had some really big wins on the road and uh,
you know, so hopefully, you know, they'll be able to
continue that and take some of the experiences that they
had this year and uh.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
And that's why we did it.
Speaker 8 (09:43):
You know, we went on the road and environments where
they weren't gonna be friendly to us, and uh and
as a result, you know, we came away with some
really good wins. So we're excited, you know, for this opportunity.
And uh, it's it's gonna be It's going to be fun.
I mean, anytime you can play in the NCLA tournament,
you know, it's a heightened the the intensity is higher
and you just want to that's what you work hard for.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
Coach, We appreciate the time. We'll see you in Morgantown.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
There. So the Wildcats know they're going to Morgantown, West Virginia.
They'll take on James Madison in the first round and
potentially West Virginia the Big twelve Tournament champions in the
second round of that Fort Worth Regional and again our
coverage will begin at two fifteen this Saturday, and tip
off will be two thirty for the Cats and the Dukes.

Final segment of BBN Radio presented by Clark's Pumping Shop
for this week as we switch gears over to football
with spring practice underway. But before we do want to
remind you when we're done with this show, stay tuned
for the nickmnje Oones Show at seven thirty. We'll talk
to the Wildcat Skipper about the three game sweep of
Alabama over the weekend, the thirteen game winning streak for
(14:11):
the baseball team, and they're great start to conference play,
eighteen and two overall on the season. So stick around
for the Nick Benjeones Show after we're done here with
BBN Radio. But let's go back to the football field
where quarterback Kenny Minshi spoke to the media and one
of the things he talked about early on in his
press scrum was the wide receiver group, the talent and
(14:33):
the depth at that skill position.
Speaker 7 (14:35):
I feel like I say this every day, but I
feel like we have a really good, really deep wide
receiver room. We have a lot of like fast, twitchy guys,
and I feel like that ranges throughout the entire room.
I don't think there's a fallof honestly. Also, I feel
like there's a few guys who can hype point the
ball for sure, and then some long, rangy guys that
(14:55):
will definitely hope on Saturdays.
Speaker 12 (14:57):
He was surprising. Maybe you didn't know a lot about
him com vaguely person.
Speaker 7 (15:04):
Well, I think we're only two practices in, but Brot
Kaufman on day one, you know, I hit a few
few big catches, which I was expecting that, but just
kind of you know, his background, his history, I don't think,
you know, a lot of people are expecting that. But
he's a really good athlete. He's made a lot of
plays already. And then I feel like a guy like
Shane Carr, he's very athletic, uh really good receiver, you know,
(15:28):
like very fundamentally sound. So he's gonna be really good to.
Speaker 12 (15:31):
You mentioned it's it's a fresh start. For everybody who
wants to.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
But it's a transfer quarter.
Speaker 12 (15:35):
How do you approach the leadership process and winning over
the line?
Speaker 7 (15:40):
Yeah, I feel like I've you know, I've had to
do that in the past, So I feel like that
wasn't as much as a like a surprise or like
a new thing to me. And I feel like I
guess my personality. Uh you know, I'm not like a
a big like hoo rah guy, but in terms of
like leading men, and I feel like kind of a
(16:02):
strong suit for myself, you know, not to put it
in like a ride way, but uh, you know, I
feel like that's not very that's not like challenging or difficult.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
It just kind of like flows.
Speaker 12 (16:13):
Your new best friends.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Of those five guys up.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
In front of you. Yeah, how do you feel about
the group? Yeah, no doubt. Yeah, it's a lot of
a lot of good guys. There's guys who are on
the team from last year that I think will play,
and then there's guys who you know, Stine and Sloan
and the rest of the offensive staff put together Cutter.
So I feel like there's a lot of you know,
long athletic guys up there who will get the job
(16:38):
done for sure. With so many new faces, a lot
of guys, they don't know each other. How do you
guys just like know faces, aims, kind of comitting got
each other's backgrounds. Yeah, for sure. You know, I feel like,
you know, spending almost every second with each other definitely helps.
We're in the facility a lot, so uh, you know,
that camaraderie definitely builds. And then you know, just trying
(16:58):
to hang out with different guys the weekends, you know,
go out to eat, hang out at the house, and
buy guys over whatever that may be. And then also
we do like get real sessions, which is a thing
we do weekly where we all meet up as a
team and then we'll kind of break out into like
breakout rooms and it'll be a group of you know,
like ten guys maybe in each room, and you kind
(17:21):
of get to dive into everyone's story. Everyone gets to
talk about themselves. So that way I can learn about,
you know, the guy I'm handing the ball off too,
like like Tavanni for example, I feel like before I
thought I knew him, and then you know, he's in
my breakout room and you know, he's talking about his
story for example, and I felt like, you know, walking
out of that room, I know him more now and again.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
That was quarterback Kenny Minschie And speaking of Minshe, offensive
coordinator Joe Sloan was asked by the media about Minsche
and how he's handled the first two days of practice.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
I think he's had a really good two days. We
saw his accuracy on tape and that was I mean,
he's extremely accurate. He always has a base, got a
great leader into kind of great demeanor, right, and he's
been able to really handle everything from an intellectual standpoint,
from a reed standpoint or pre snap some different checks
and things like that. So you know, everything that we
thought that showed up right really not just these first
(18:15):
couple of days, but also these first these first couple
of months. I couldn't be more pleased with him.
Speaker 12 (18:19):
He's a lot of fun to work with.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
I think it's been great around the guys, uh, and
he seems to be really excited to be here.
Speaker 7 (18:25):
Joe.
Speaker 12 (18:25):
You coach Nick Anderson at LSU. Obviously, isn't just as
simple as staying healthy for him to have a big
years of something else. He needs to get back to it.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
No, I think I think, you know, obviously the last
the last couple of years, specifically two years ago, right,
and that kind of lingered over. Obviously went through some
injury issues, and I think he grew a lot from that.
Nick the way he's approached every single day, the attention
to detail, the aggression he's approached it with. You know,
(18:53):
sometimes when you come back from an injury, you're kind
of you're a little bit tentative, or you're you're not
yourself in terms of the most urgent version or aggressive
version of yourself, because there's just a natural protection, right
that that you kind of carry yourself with. And I
think I've watched him he's been vocal, he's attacked everything,
the detail he's playing with, the way he's communicating, the
(19:16):
way he's leading, it's it's been awesome to see. It's
really fun. He seems like he's having a lot of
fun playing football, and I'm pumped for him.
Speaker 7 (19:24):
There's a lot of new faces on the opposite line
here just this point.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Its y all An.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
The other days.
Speaker 5 (19:32):
Well, I think that's college football now, you know. I
think there's gonna be new faces every year, you know,
And I think that's a challenge, and that's a new challenge, right,
And you got to adapt, so maybe some some old
ways of doing things have to have to adjust. And
I think coach Stine's done a fabulous job of how
he's set up the program in terms of getting our
guys around each other. I mean, you look everywhere and
(19:54):
he's gonna have cats up right. And connection is the
number one d N A trait that we have U
So I think that's not just the old line, but
but over or throughout our organization, and we set up
things right during the week to push that right, to
push that connection with our guys. But I think Carter
lefwich and and the offensive line staff that we have
(20:17):
right from uh Cleft to right Dallas to Paul like,
I think all those guys are doing a great job
of getting getting our players together and teaching them right,
teaching them what it's like to be an entire unit.
I think Colton Price's leadership inside has been great. But
I think we had a lot of older players and
we did a really good job, I feel like of
(20:37):
getting smart players on the offensive line. I think we
have a lot of smart guys that have come in.
They communicate well, they talk, and that's gonna be that's
gonna be great because that that's what we're gonna see
in the fall. We're gonna see a lot of different things.
And they got to make the adjustments. They got to
be talented enough to do it, but they also have
to be uh smart enough to make those adjustments. So
(20:58):
I've been really pleased with them so far, and from
the players to the coaching staff, everybody, it's been great.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
And finally here on BBN Radio presented by Clark's Pumping Shop,
we got to hear from the head man, right, the
head coach of the Wildcats, Will Stein, and he gave
his thoughts on the first couple of days of spring practice.
Speaker 12 (21:17):
First day in the books, a lot of really good
work out there, a lot of opportunities for all of
our players. Our coaches did a really nice job with
the transitions in between periods. Players were responsive to coaching,
and like I mentioned, we got a lot of work
done so good. First day.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Spring is obviously different than fall.
Speaker 12 (21:37):
You will still do like an install this week.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
How do you build through it or is it fundamental?
Speaker 12 (21:42):
We install something every day, right, We're like a whole mentality.
I mean, we're gonna throw a lot of stuff on
the wall. See what sticks, especially schematically, learning our team
in this setting different than learning them in a walk
through setting and winter. So, yeah, we install every day.
We'll have a new one tomorrow and have at fifteen
installs over the fifteen practices. Now, how many plays or
(22:03):
schemes that is? Really it's not like every day has
fifteen new plays. It might be two or three here
or there. Somebody has to go around there first, second, third, back.
Do you approach a depth chart? Then we don't have
depth chart. We have a blue and a white squad
that's intertwined. There's not a ones, twos, threes at all.
So that's really, to me the big part of development.
Everybody says you want to be developed, Well, how do
(22:25):
you do it? Like, don't have a depth chart? See
what lancer looks like to maybe a rotational guard or
that was a walk on? Like see who can play?
So Kenny minshe doesn't have a starting offensive line out
front of him. We have truly a blue team and
a white team that will be different each week. How
do you decide we just mix it up?
Speaker 5 (22:43):
Yeah, we mix it up.
Speaker 12 (22:45):
What are the benefits of that approach development? You get
to see who can actually go compete and who can
make plays without maybe a starting lineup in front of him.
I've seen a lot of that, especially from the quarterback position.
Who moves a fotball down the field regardless of what's
going on up front. And in football, you're going to
play multiple guys who had a season. So the last
(23:08):
thing I want is week six of these of the season,
and we got to have a new person at a
position that's never done it before. So we intermix the groups.
We intermix people different positions. A X receiver might play
ze receiver for a day, a left guard might play
right guard for a day. So you want to have
a position flex within your team and that's why we
do it.
