First of all, what's it like for the new guys
and a new head coach, everybody trying to prove it,
prove them right.

It's exciting as a freshman, especially back then, there wasn't
a lot of mid year so coming in the summer
that first spring, you're excited, You're geeked up, you're ready
to go as your freshman year.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Because one, if you read shirt, you didn't.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
Play, you weren't allowed to play in four games. And
even if the guys did play in four games, that
was it and they were able to keep that red shirt.
This is a chance for you to get out there
and show like, hey man, I'm ready to contribute.

This is a big year.

I'm trying to get on the film, trying to show
you what I got. I love ball and I'm going
to prove it to you this spring. So it's a
really exciting time. And even for the mid year guys
that were already there in the first spring, right, you
do that the first spring. I talked to some guys
before about this. That second spring, you feel like you're there.
You had a full year, like, Okay, I was new,
I didn't really understand what's happening now here it is,

And it's even more exciting for those guys because now
it's another opportunity.

You have a new coach. You weren't recruited by them,
so now you have.
Speaker 9 (02:52):
A chance to prove yourself again to show why.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
You should be playing, whether it's because you didn't play
a lot last year for whatever reason, or you did
play a lot. So it'sake a great opportunity for everyone
that is new and returning to put their foot forward
and show the show these coaches that hey, I'm here
to help your vision and then get this program going
back to bowl games.

And you use the word coaches plural, it's not will Stein,
it's will Stein and all the other coach. He's got
a million new coaches, assistant coaches. H And you know,
I think people probably understand by now that the relationship
with you guys, the players have or had with your
position coach is maybe even more important than that of

the head coach. And they're out there trying to build relationship,
build bonds with their new position coaches.

Right, explain that dynamic.

It is.

Your position coach is someone you see all the time.
And I still talk to my position coach, coach Petrie
when I see him all the time. We text here
and there, and he still lives in Lexington. They are
like another parent of you, of yours when you come
to cause there's someone you're with every week, every weekend.

You see them.

They control your playing time, right. They're the ones that say, hey,
we're rotating you in.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Hey you're going to.
Speaker 9 (04:05):
Play this, you're going to do this, you're doing bad.

You run drilled with them, you do individuals with them,
You're doing drills with them even when you're not in full.

Pads during like walkthroughs.

They are an integral part of your growth as a
football player, and they're a person that you have to
lean on.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
They're not just there to coach you.
Speaker 9 (04:21):
They're also a person that keeps it real with you when.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
You're missing class, when you're missing tutor and coach Ptrie
didn't go for that, and whar doesn't go for that.

They are on top of their guys all the time.

Your position coach is an interemporal part of your life.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
And like you said, in a way, they're more important
than the head coach because you see them more. They're
right there with the strength staff, another group that you
see all the time that you can't get away from.

And you know what, I see Coach Petrie every time
I'm at the y.

He is too either on the StairMaster or on the treadmill,
trying to stay in shape. And what I got to
tell you about position coaches or head coaches. One of
my favorite stories is, remember when the Bengals used to
work out over here at Georgetown.

They had a d back and I can't remember.
Speaker 7 (05:06):
Who it was. You would probably know him or know
of him, but he played at Florida under spur It
was really good Spurrier teams. And so Steve Mass and
I from WKYT we were chatting with him one day
and we said.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
What was it like playing for Spurri or what's he like?
And he says, no, idea. Never talked to him. He
said what he said.
Speaker 7 (05:24):
In the four years I was there, I never spoke
to the man except for when I signed.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
We're like, how can that be?
Speaker 7 (05:31):
So because I played defense, I talked to the DC
and my position coaches NonStop, but never talked to the
head coach. So that's a bit extreme, but I think
that underscores, you know, what the relationships are like with
players and position coaches. We're talking with Ricky Lumpkin of
the UK Network, former football Wildcat. Spring football is underway.

You mentioned coach Stewart and he was holdover. As we
all know, that had to delight you, not just the
link to the previous players and previous staffs, but the
fact that this is a guy who's had a lot
of success at your position and that that was.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
I think a big move by will Stein. I know
you agree, right, I.
Speaker 6 (06:14):
Agree with it, and I don't think there's a fan
or anyone that can say that the job he did
last year with that group is amazing. Right when you
look at the group he had, the transfers coming in,
you had some highly rded transfers in there, but no
one expected them to do what they did upfront the
entire year. The amount of guys that were physical upfront,
(06:37):
Like you, there wasn't a game where you could say, man,
they were bad. The defensive line played bad. I said
it every week on their show. When you can't point
to the defensive line and say.

They had a bad game.

They were in gaps, they were physical with their hands
is of course, there was still mistakes here and there.
No one's perfect, right I said, but the job he
did with what he had and that's not a slight
to the players.

They weren't.

That group was not looked to being a strong point
by anyone in the conference, and I'm sure sure around
the nation. And then you see how they played, how
Tadon Gatson showed up, Khalil Saunders, David Gusta, Humphrey's grace
I can.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Name and keep going and going. He did an amazing
job and.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
He showed that he is worth it more than he
is now and that the guys are willing to play
for him. And I will say this from talking to
some of the guys that some of them didn't understand
it right.

They were like, oh my god.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
He's annoying. But then I talked to him.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
When they're done, they're like, man, I really appreciate him.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Yeah, I said, that's when you have a great coach.

We could have stayed Coach Petrie because all we ever
did was drills, drills, drills.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
They called him General Petrie. But you know what, at
the end of the day, we end up understanding he really.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
Wanted what was best for us, and it paid off.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
And you look at the guys that made it to
the league and that are successful and lean on to
the lean on the things that we learned from him,
and to that what we do now in the real world.

It's man, it's worth it.

You need guys like that.

You had your shot with the pros. Corey Peters, Jeremy
Jeremy Jeremy told me. He said, Petrie is still the
best position coach he's ever had, high school, college or pros.

You know, So that tells you a lot. Before we
get to the.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
O line, I think the BBN has gotten a crash
course if they didn't already understand what it takes to
put a good, good old line together.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
First of all, you have to have good players, but
of course.
Speaker 7 (08:18):
As we've all learned, and I was an O lineman
for a minute, you know it's got to be five
working is one. We know this now and if you
didn't understand it before, you certainly have heard it at
nauseum from the media. But talk to me, Ricky about
the defensive line. How do those guys have to mesh?
Is it similar at all to O line and the
guys you're trying to tear the shreds.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
But talk about the relationship on that D line.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
It's honestly the same thing. Four or three working as one.
Speaker 6 (08:48):
Yeah, Because if I can't trust the person beside me
to be in his gap, I might try to do
too much to cover my gap and his gap, okay,
Which then when he's in his gap and I don't
think he's going to be in the big gap rate
he's supposed to be, I try to get there than
my GAP's wide open, then we have a problem, right.
And then also when it comes to games, offensive linem
and hate games.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
They always when I say games, it's.
Speaker 6 (09:10):
Like a tight a tight end, I mean a tad stunt,
a tech stunt. Tackle first and second tackle's going to
rusht the big gap. The end goes upfield and loops around.
If we're not on the same page, and I can't
trust you to run that right, you're.
Speaker 9 (09:24):
Leaving me out to drive, and vice versa. It's not
going to work.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
We don't get there receivers open, big play, possible touchdown.
So you have to have that chemistry. And even on
the defensive line, there's sometimes guys who, man, I don't
want to play beside him. He don't know what he's doing.
And then at the same time.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
You're worried about getting hurt and you don't know.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
Where you're going and what you're doing, and you're getting
double team.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
You're gonna follow on my legs and my ankle, and
that can give me a high ankle spray and a
broken leg, a broken ankle a spray, and I'm having
to think about too much stuff. I need to play
next to someone I know that's going to do their job,
that it's going to show up and play hard and
we're gonna get the job done because we were a
unit up front. It takes a group effort to stop
(10:05):
the run. It's just not one person. It's a group effort,
believe it or not. To get to the passer.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
You need to have a strong group, you know.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
Now I'm flashing on another story. Of course that happened
to me all the time because I've been here forever.
But I think this was br before Ricky, when Mike
Archer first got here, I think for the first time
and took over the defense. You were talking about standing
your gap what you all call being gap sound, and
he kept reminding guys, just what you said, stand your gap,
(10:35):
do your job. Don't try to do somebody else's job.
Do your job, because if you break off to go
help over here, now your GAP's wide open. And it
was driving him crazy that his best player, and he's
the late great now sweet Pee Burns was his best player, Ricky,
but it was the worst at standing in his gap
because he knew he was so much better and he
(10:57):
wanted to go help, so he'd run off. And then
that was why all year long we see running backs
cut back and find a huge open lane and people running.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Why does that work against Kentucky so much? Guys cutting back.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
And getting huge games on third downs because their best
defender was rushing over here to help somebody in this
gap and his gap was wide open, easy to see
when that breaks down, isn't it?
Speaker 6 (11:20):
It is easy to see, and there's sometimes where guys
do that and it works, and a lot of players
even nowadays.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
Like, ooh, I want to be like so and so?
Speaker 9 (11:26):
Who want to be like so and so?

You're not like them. Just because they can do that
and make it work doesn't mean you can.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
And the coaches will tell you if you're gonna shoot it,
you better make because not your cheeks are grass. And
I'm not gonna say the bad word on the radio.
I'm just gonna say your cheeks of grass. So it
sounds good, looks good. When you're out there freestyling, you
can get the flashy play. But when it doesn't work
and it gets gashed, and if you're a person that
consistently does.

That, I get it.

And I want to give a little story real quick,
please make it fast.

It's like.

Love them to death, you call them Juice number ninety
seven teammate. He would always talk about Jarman, about how
Jeremy could throw a move out there, a passers move,
a swim or rip and get to the quarterback easily.
He does something really spat and just gets there. Now,
Jeremy is the hard work and from him always just laugh.

But man, when I go out there and try that,
I'm out there fighting for my life.

And next thing I know, I'm getting hemmed up and getting.

Pushed all over the place because I'm trying to do

Then, and you have to realize everyone can't do that.

I think you had a chance to cross paths with
the UK's new head coach, and you sound like you're excited.

I'm very excited.

One, it's weird because he's younger than me, that tell me,
and it's it's right, Like I'm like, oh my gosh.

I told my OFFICI, maybe is it bad that now
we're getting older than the head coaches from the position coaching.
That's a little weird, I said, But you know what,
we're on God's green earth, so we're going to take
it and run with it. So but I mean, I
love the energy, I love the enthusiasm he brings, and
I just love it.

I remember when he was at Louisville because we played
each other in college.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
He wasn't the starting quarterback.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
But even then, just knowing, like hearing things about him
from people that went there and whatnot.

Like this is who he is.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
And I absolutely enjoy I love seeing the videos and
seeing it in person is very authentic and juicy, and
you just have to love the atmosphere that's around him.
I love that he's not afraid. He whether he said,
what am I afraid of? I knew what I was
getting into when I got here.

You can't be you know the job that's I had,
and you don't see that.

There's no softness, there's no fear in his heart, there's
no fear in his voice. He's holding the guys accountable
and you know it's going to pay off now, just
as fans take a deep breath and relax and let
the man work.

you're gonna be happy when you sit result.

And you know what's cool about about this hire and
it's intriguing.

I will say this, Here's a guy who played college
football right down the highway, but grew up with college
football here, you know, as the son of a former Wildcat,
which it gives him a.

Kind of investment, Ricky.

That's that I think is unique in this nation when
it comes to D one college football.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
You know, it's very unique.

You know when he said that, the alumni being he
said that all his press, his dad, letter Winner. He's
been in the K in the K House, the K Club,
He's been all over the stadium. He remembers when the
stadium not looking anything like that. He remembers when it
looked like how it was from even before I was here,
with just bleiefs and zone. That is an investment you
don't find much, right, That's the investment you see from
(19:04):
guys like Kirby Smart and guys I forgot Fitzgerald that
was at Northwestern.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
That kind of love where you're like, well man, he
really cares about this place. Oh yeah, he wants to
port end too. This place.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
This isn't a wind stop shot, This isn't.

To get to the next job. You can see the passion.
This isn't a stepping stone. You can see that and
feel that, and that's what we need.

You know, You've got to have someone that really believes
in here, that wants to stay and really wants to
take this to the next level and not just leave.
And coach Stups did a great job of it, you
know what I mean, He did a great job. I'm
not taking anything away from him. Amazing the amount of Bowl,
the amount of Bowl wins in a row, the Bowl
victory is the top ten, all those things, and now
it's just another chapter in UK football history. And I think,

and I believe and I hope that coach Stein can
do the same thing and even more.

You know what's interesting about what you just said about
Mark steps and this has become a cliche, but only
because people like me have said it's so many times.
It's become true. He raised the bar, but he also
raised the floor as in now. Back in the day,
people would say six or wins, seven six or seven wins.
Though I'd be happy with it, now they're not happy
with that. They want more, and that's okay because Mark

Stoops gave it to them and made them feel like
it was possible.

The new quarterback or quarterbacks plural, but you know, it
doesn't matter what they do without the O line. And
once again, Ricky, they may have even in terms of development,
taken a step back because they lost several guys.

To graduation to NFL Pro Day.

They're sort of starting over with the building blocks, but
they in the portal I thought did a tremendous job
of getting experienced.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Guys one way or the other. I l playing opportunities. Whatever.
How do you feel about the old line they brought in.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
I love it, And I'm gonna go ahead and echo
something you said. I know everybody wants to talking about
the quarterback and everything else. Man, Look, you're not winning
games in this conference or any conference if you ain't
got an offensive defensive line. They are what protects the quarterback,
and that's who you need to get to the quarterback
and stop the run.

And the one thing you could say is this, Yes they.

Are replacing pieces, this, that and the other, but we're
not lacking size or we're not lacking talent and we're
not lacking just overall, get get.

After it right, and you have to love that.

I think this is the opportunity for the office line
to do what the defensive line did last year.

opportunity for this for this offensive line to show that
they mean business and to give the quarterback and running
backs and everyone the time they need to do their
job because it all starts with them. I like to
say the offensive line is the heart of the team

and the defensive line is the solees.

Reporter fran Kersey told me, when you start to break
down a team and evaluate, you start with the old
line because it dictates everything, possession of the football field
position obviously, the number of points you score, and where
you put your defense in terms of field positions. So
I've always looked at it that way. I just got
about a minute left, but you mentioned running backs, and well,

if you on again to talk about the skill players
more and more. But I thought they did a nice
job bringing in running backs. They've got some experience in
the wide receiver room.

I love that the guys are getting out there again
and exciting in the air and hearing that blowhorn bringing
me a little PTSD.

First of all, what's it like for the new guys
and a new head coach, everybody trying to prove it,
prove them right.
Speaker 6 (02:02):
It's exciting as a freshman, especially back then, there wasn't
a lot of mid year so coming in the summer
that first spring, you're excited, You're geeked up, you're ready
to go as your freshman year.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
Because one, if you read shirt, you didn't.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
Play, you weren't allowed to play in four games. And
even if the guys did play in four games, that
was it and they were able to keep that red shirt.
This is a chance for you to get out there
and show like, hey man, I'm ready to contribute.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
This is a big year.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
I'm trying to get on the film, trying to show
you what I got. I love ball and I'm going
to prove it to you this spring. So it's a
really exciting time. And even for the mid year guys
that were already there in the first spring, right, you
do that the first spring. I talked to some guys
before about this. That second spring, you feel like you're there.
You had a full year, like, Okay, I was new,
I didn't really understand what's happening now here it is,
(02:46):
And it's even more exciting for those guys because now
it's another opportunity.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
You have a new coach. You weren't recruited by them,
so now you have.
Speaker 9 (02:52):
A chance to prove yourself again to show why.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
You should be playing, whether it's because you didn't play
a lot last year for whatever reason, or you did
play a lot. So it'sake a great opportunity for everyone
that is new and returning to put their foot forward
and show the show these coaches that hey, I'm here
to help your vision and then get this program going
back to bowl games.
Speaker 7 (03:10):
And you use the word coaches plural, it's not will Stein,
it's will Stein and all the other coach. He's got
a million new coaches, assistant coaches. H And you know,
I think people probably understand by now that the relationship
with you guys, the players have or had with your
position coach is maybe even more important than that of
(03:30):
the head coach. And they're out there trying to build relationship,
build bonds with their new position coaches.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Right, explain that dynamic.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
It is.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Your position coach is someone you see all the time.
And I still talk to my position coach, coach Petrie
when I see him all the time. We text here
and there, and he still lives in Lexington. They are
like another parent of you, of yours when you come
to cause there's someone you're with every week, every weekend.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
You see them.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
They control your playing time, right. They're the ones that say, hey,
we're rotating you in.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
Hey you're going to.
Speaker 9 (04:05):
Play this, you're going to do this, you're doing bad.
Speaker 6 (04:07):
You run drilled with them, you do individuals with them,
You're doing drills with them even when you're not in full.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
Pads during like walkthroughs.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
They are an integral part of your growth as a
football player, and they're a person that you have to
lean on.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
They're not just there to coach you.
Speaker 9 (04:21):
They're also a person that keeps it real with you when.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
You're missing class, when you're missing tutor and coach Ptrie
didn't go for that, and whar doesn't go for that.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
They are on top of their guys all the time.
Speaker 9 (04:30):
Your position coach is an interemporal part of your life.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
And like you said, in a way, they're more important
than the head coach because you see them more. They're
right there with the strength staff, another group that you
see all the time that you can't get away from.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
And you know what, I see Coach Petrie every time
I'm at the y.
Speaker 7 (04:49):
He is too either on the StairMaster or on the treadmill,
trying to stay in shape. And what I got to
tell you about position coaches or head coaches. One of
my favorite stories is, remember when the Bengals used to
work out over here at Georgetown.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
They had a d back and I can't remember.
Speaker 7 (05:06):
Who it was. You would probably know him or know
of him, but he played at Florida under spur It
was really good Spurrier teams. And so Steve Mass and
I from WKYT we were chatting with him one day
and we said.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
What was it like playing for Spurri or what's he like?
And he says, no, idea. Never talked to him. He
said what he said.
Speaker 7 (05:24):
In the four years I was there, I never spoke
to the man except for when I signed.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
We're like, how can that be?
Speaker 7 (05:31):
So because I played defense, I talked to the DC
and my position coaches NonStop, but never talked to the
head coach. So that's a bit extreme, but I think
that underscores, you know, what the relationships are like with
players and position coaches. We're talking with Ricky Lumpkin of
the UK Network, former football Wildcat. Spring football is underway.
(05:52):
You mentioned coach Stewart and he was holdover. As we
all know, that had to delight you, not just the
link to the previous players and previous staffs, but the
fact that this is a guy who's had a lot
of success at your position and that that was.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
I think a big move by will Stein. I know
you agree, right, I.
Speaker 6 (06:14):
Agree with it, and I don't think there's a fan
or anyone that can say that the job he did
last year with that group is amazing. Right when you
look at the group he had, the transfers coming in,
you had some highly rded transfers in there, but no
one expected them to do what they did upfront the
entire year. The amount of guys that were physical upfront,
(06:37):
Like you, there wasn't a game where you could say, man,
they were bad. The defensive line played bad. I said
it every week on their show. When you can't point
to the defensive line and say.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
They had a bad game.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
They were in gaps, they were physical with their hands
is of course, there was still mistakes here and there.
No one's perfect, right I said, but the job he
did with what he had and that's not a slight
to the players.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
They weren't.
Speaker 6 (06:58):
That group was not looked to being a strong point
by anyone in the conference, and I'm sure sure around
the nation. And then you see how they played, how
Tadon Gatson showed up, Khalil Saunders, David Gusta, Humphrey's grace
I can.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Name and keep going and going. He did an amazing
job and.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
He showed that he is worth it more than he
is now and that the guys are willing to play
for him. And I will say this from talking to
some of the guys that some of them didn't understand
it right.
Speaker 9 (07:25):
They were like, oh my god.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
He's annoying. But then I talked to him.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
When they're done, they're like, man, I really appreciate him.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
Yeah, I said, that's when you have a great coach.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
We could have stayed Coach Petrie because all we ever
did was drills, drills, drills.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
They called him General Petrie. But you know what, at
the end of the day, we end up understanding he really.
Speaker 9 (07:43):
Wanted what was best for us, and it paid off.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
And you look at the guys that made it to
the league and that are successful and lean on to
the lean on the things that we learned from him,
and to that what we do now in the real world.
Speaker 9 (07:52):
It's man, it's worth it.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
You need guys like that.
Speaker 7 (07:55):
You had your shot with the pros. Corey Peters, Jeremy
Jeremy Jeremy told me. He said, Petrie is still the
best position coach he's ever had, high school, college or pros.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
You know, So that tells you a lot. Before we
get to the.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
O line, I think the BBN has gotten a crash
course if they didn't already understand what it takes to
put a good, good old line together.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
First of all, you have to have good players, but
of course.
Speaker 7 (08:18):
As we've all learned, and I was an O lineman
for a minute, you know it's got to be five
working is one. We know this now and if you
didn't understand it before, you certainly have heard it at
nauseum from the media. But talk to me, Ricky about
the defensive line. How do those guys have to mesh?
Is it similar at all to O line and the
guys you're trying to tear the shreds.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
But talk about the relationship on that D line.
Speaker 5 (08:44):
It's honestly the same thing. Four or three working as one.
Speaker 6 (08:48):
Yeah, Because if I can't trust the person beside me
to be in his gap, I might try to do
too much to cover my gap and his gap, okay,
Which then when he's in his gap and I don't
think he's going to be in the big gap rate
he's supposed to be, I try to get there than
my GAP's wide open, then we have a problem, right.
And then also when it comes to games, offensive linem
and hate games.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
They always when I say games, it's.
Speaker 6 (09:10):
Like a tight a tight end, I mean a tad stunt,
a tech stunt. Tackle first and second tackle's going to
rusht the big gap. The end goes upfield and loops around.
If we're not on the same page, and I can't
trust you to run that right, you're.
Speaker 9 (09:24):
Leaving me out to drive, and vice versa. It's not
going to work.
Speaker 6 (09:27):
We don't get there receivers open, big play, possible touchdown.
So you have to have that chemistry. And even on
the defensive line, there's sometimes guys who, man, I don't
want to play beside him. He don't know what he's doing.
And then at the same time.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
You're worried about getting hurt and you don't know.
Speaker 9 (09:42):
Where you're going and what you're doing, and you're getting
double team.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
You're gonna follow on my legs and my ankle, and
that can give me a high ankle spray and a
broken leg, a broken ankle a spray, and I'm having
to think about too much stuff. I need to play
next to someone I know that's going to do their job,
that it's going to show up and play hard and
we're gonna get the job done because we were a
unit up front. It takes a group effort to stop
(10:05):
the run. It's just not one person. It's a group effort,
believe it or not. To get to the passer.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
You need to have a strong group, you know.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
Now I'm flashing on another story. Of course that happened
to me all the time because I've been here forever.
But I think this was br before Ricky, when Mike
Archer first got here, I think for the first time
and took over the defense. You were talking about standing
your gap what you all call being gap sound, and
he kept reminding guys, just what you said, stand your gap,
(10:35):
do your job. Don't try to do somebody else's job.
Do your job, because if you break off to go
help over here, now your GAP's wide open. And it
was driving him crazy that his best player, and he's
the late great now sweet Pee Burns was his best player, Ricky,
but it was the worst at standing in his gap
because he knew he was so much better and he
(10:57):
wanted to go help, so he'd run off. And then
that was why all year long we see running backs
cut back and find a huge open lane and people running.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Why does that work against Kentucky so much? Guys cutting back.
Speaker 7 (11:09):
And getting huge games on third downs because their best
defender was rushing over here to help somebody in this
gap and his gap was wide open, easy to see
when that breaks down, isn't it?
Speaker 6 (11:20):
It is easy to see, and there's sometimes where guys
do that and it works, and a lot of players
even nowadays.
Speaker 5 (11:25):
Like, ooh, I want to be like so and so?
Speaker 9 (11:26):
Who want to be like so and so?
Speaker 5 (11:28):
You're not like them. Just because they can do that
and make it work doesn't mean you can.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
And the coaches will tell you if you're gonna shoot it,
you better make because not your cheeks are grass. And
I'm not gonna say the bad word on the radio.
I'm just gonna say your cheeks of grass. So it
sounds good, looks good. When you're out there freestyling, you
can get the flashy play. But when it doesn't work
and it gets gashed, and if you're a person that
consistently does.
Speaker 5 (11:51):
That, I get it.
Speaker 9 (11:52):
And I want to give a little story real quick,
please make it fast.
Speaker 5 (11:55):
It's like.
Speaker 6 (11:57):
Love them to death, you call them Juice number ninety
seven teammate. He would always talk about Jarman, about how
Jeremy could throw a move out there, a passers move,
a swim or rip and get to the quarterback easily.
He does something really spat and just gets there. Now,
Jeremy is the hard work and from him always just laugh.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
He said.
Speaker 6 (12:15):
But man, when I go out there and try that,
I'm out there fighting for my life.
Speaker 5 (12:19):
And next thing I know, I'm getting hemmed up and getting.
Speaker 6 (12:22):
Pushed all over the place because I'm trying to do
the same swim move.
Speaker 9 (12:25):
Then, and you have to realize everyone can't do that.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
There's some moves that work for.
Speaker 9 (12:29):
You that don't work for everybody.

One, it's weird because he's younger than me, that tell me,
and it's it's right, Like I'm like, oh my gosh.

we're getting older than the head coaches from the position coaching.
That's a little weird, I said, But you know what,
we're on God's green earth, so we're going to take
it and run with it. So but I mean, I
love the energy, I love the enthusiasm he brings, and
I just love it.

I remember when he was at Louisville because we played
each other in college.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
He wasn't the starting quarterback.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
But even then, just knowing, like hearing things about him
from people that went there and whatnot.

Like this is who he is.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
And I absolutely enjoy I love seeing the videos and
seeing it in person is very authentic and juicy, and
you just have to love the atmosphere that's around him.
I love that he's not afraid. He whether he said,
what am I afraid of? I knew what I was
getting into when I got here.

You can't be you know the job that's I had,
and you don't see that.

There's no softness, there's no fear in his heart, there's
no fear in his voice. He's holding the guys accountable
and you know it's going to pay off now, just
as fans take a deep breath and relax and let
the man work.

Not everyone's going to be happy, but you know what,
you're gonna be happy when you sit result.

And you know what's cool about about this hire and
it's intriguing.

I will say this, Here's a guy who played college
football right down the highway, but grew up with college
football here, you know, as the son of a former Wildcat,
which it gives him a.

Kind of investment, Ricky.

That's that I think is unique in this nation when
it comes to D one college football.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
You know, it's very unique.
Speaker 6 (18:42):
You know when he said that, the alumni being he
said that all his press, his dad, letter Winner. He's
been in the K in the K House, the K Club,
He's been all over the stadium. He remembers when the
stadium not looking anything like that. He remembers when it
looked like how it was from even before I was here,
with just bleiefs and zone. That is an investment you

victory is the top ten, all those things, and now
it's just another chapter in UK football history. And I think,

and I believe and I hope that coach Stein can
do the same thing and even more.

You know what's interesting about what you just said about
Mark steps and this has become a cliche, but only
because people like me have said it's so many times.
It's become true. He raised the bar, but he also
raised the floor as in now. Back in the day,
people would say six or wins, seven six or seven wins.
Though I'd be happy with it, now they're not happy
with that. They want more, and that's okay because Mark

The new quarterback or quarterbacks plural, but you know, it
doesn't matter what they do without the O line. And
once again, Ricky, they may have even in terms of development,
taken a step back because they lost several guys.

To graduation to NFL Pro Day.
Speaker 7 (20:50):
They're sort of starting over with the building blocks, but
they in the portal I thought did a tremendous job
of getting experienced.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Guys one way or the other. I l playing opportunities. Whatever.
How do you feel about the old line they brought in.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
I love it, And I'm gonna go ahead and echo
something you said. I know everybody wants to talking about
the quarterback and everything else. Man, Look, you're not winning
games in this conference or any conference if you ain't
got an offensive defensive line. They are what protects the quarterback,
and that's who you need to get to the quarterback
and stop the run.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
And the one thing you could say is this, Yes they.
Speaker 6 (21:23):
Are replacing pieces, this, that and the other, but we're
not lacking size or we're not lacking talent and we're
not lacking just overall, get get.
Speaker 9 (21:30):
After it right, and you have to love that.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
I think this is the opportunity for the office line
to do what the defensive line did last year.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
There's a lot of question marks, there's a.
Speaker 9 (21:38):
Lot of well we don't know they coming from here
and they.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Left for a reason. All that junk.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
Well, this is great fuel for them guys to go
out there and show people what's up and to get
after it. Because, like we've already said, you have we're
not over looking Youngstown State. They made the playoffs last year.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
They made a good run.
Speaker 9 (21:55):
Think they upset someone that was highly ranked.
Speaker 6 (21:57):
In there in their division to go to the next round. Well,
guess what, you can't You can't overlook them. And then
you have Alabama coming in. It's a great opportunity, great
opportunity for this for this offensive line to show that
they mean business and to give the quarterback and running
backs and everyone the time they need to do their
job because it all starts with them. I like to
say the offensive line is the heart of the team
(22:19):
and the defensive line is the solees.

Okay, yeah, live. When I was a young Puppet.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
Reporter fran Kersey told me, when you start to break
down a team and evaluate, you start with the old
line because it dictates everything, possession of the football field
position obviously, the number of points you score, and where
you put your defense in terms of field positions. So
I've always looked at it that way. I just got
about a minute left, but you mentioned running backs, and well,
(22:47):
if you on again to talk about the skill players
more and more. But I thought they did a nice
job bringing in running backs. They've got some experience in
the wide receiver room.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
I can't wait. In just a minute or so, Rickie,
I can't wait to see this offense under.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
You know.
Speaker 6 (23:02):
It's gonna be exciting. I'm gonna keep it quick and
short because you know I can get the rambling with
you anytime. So I think it's gonna be an amazing year.
No matter how you put it and push it, it's
gonna be something different that people aren't used to seeing,
and it's gonna give people something to come out and
see and cheer about, or scream about or be mad about.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
It's just gonna be fun. You know, be a Kentucky fan,
be a fin and.
Speaker 6 (23:26):
Just enjoy the process and feel and pour your all
into this team and this coaching staff because they need it.
Players need to come out there, and coaches also feed
off of seeing a packed house. It's gonna be a
great year. We have a great schedule. Yes, it's hard,
but you know what, when isn't it not hard for us?
They always give us a crappy sc schedule, So what's
the difference. Let's bubble up. They're on scholarship just like us,
(23:48):
and let's go hit some people in the mouth.

I've always said it's not as much the schedule, but
the calendar and THENDED. The calendar makes it tough this year,
but that's a topic for another evening.
