is coming.
Speaker 5 (00:53):
Home to Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Now, your host, Tarren Hendrick.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Well, it's a busy time of year around UK athletics
as we welcome you into Clark's Peppinshop BBN Radio. I'm
Darren Headrick, joined by my co host tonight Andrew Kappus.
You'll hear him in studio during men's basketball games throughout
the winner. We've also heard him calling some baseball games
and volleyball and softball. He wears many hats for the
UK Sports Network. Andrew, thanks for taking some time to
(01:21):
join US. I know it's been busy for you as
well during what we call crossover season.
Speaker 6 (01:27):
Oh, the month of March is superb, isn't it, Darren.
It's It's one of my favorite months because you get
the return of baseball and then you get, for my
money anyway, the best sporting event of the year with
March Madness. So baseball is back, We've got March Madness
on tap. Life is good. And also a little bit
of NFL Draft coverage too, so you get a little
(01:47):
bit of everything this time a year.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Oh that's right, man, And don't forget we're like, what
a month away from the Masters month, month and a half,
I think it is. So ye, it's a wonderful time
of year in sports. We'll just start with basketball. Heard
from head coach Kenny Brooks. The women's team finishing up
the regular season twenty two and five eleven and five
and or a twenty two and six eleven and five
(02:09):
in SEC play, they'll be the four seed in the
SEC tournament. I know you've had a chance to watch
a little bit of the women while you've also been
covering the men for the UK Sports Network, But just
what a remarkable season that this group has had coming
together year number one under coach Brooks, and we have
seen some real shining stars, whether you want to talk
(02:29):
about Georgia Amore, Clara Strack, tianni Key on down the list.
This has just been a really fun team for Big
Blue Nation to watch this year.
Speaker 6 (02:39):
Just with Kenny Brooks's resume that he brought in this year.
If you would have told me back in April that
he'd beat Tennessee eighty two to fifty eight in year one,
I'd say that's a successful year, without even knowing the
fact that they went twenty two and six and are
in great position to host the first two rounds of
the NCAA tournament. So I think this has been a
dream year in terms of the start of his Kentucky career.
(03:03):
You talk about the players he's brought in and had
to kind of reassemble this team basically from scratch. You know,
he did bring in some folks he was familiar with
from Virginia Tech, most notably as you mentioned, Georgia Amore.
But to be as successful as he's been in year
one eleven and five in the sec again that eighty
two fifty eight win, I had a chance to watch
(03:25):
that one start to finish the other night inside Memorial Coliseum,
and what a wonderful win. I mean, anytime you can
beat Tennessee in any sport, it's great, but to beat
him in women's basketball, especially after the men swept them
this year on the basketball side, and to go three
to zero against them in the regular season, it's just
really really good. So a big hat tip to Kenny
for that. But yeah, you look at twenty two and six,
(03:47):
really competitive in those six losses too for the most part,
and a great chance to make a run not only
in the SEC tournament, but a chance to have some
home home court advantage for the first couple of rounds
hopefully and then make a deep run into the end
to tournament as well.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, I want to go back to one point you
were just making real quick before we talk about the
possible tournament projections for the women. How about Mark Pope
and Kenny Brooks combining to go five and oh against
Tennessee and Louisville and then for the man you throw
Duke in there, and Kentucky Hoops this year went six
and oh against the maybe the top three rivals in
(04:23):
basketball for Big Blue Nation.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Yeah, That's a good point because I didn't even think
to throw in Louisville into that category as well, especially
when you consider on the women's side, Louisville didn't have
that lull in competitiveness with Jeff Walls having done such
a great job this year too, even with Kenny and
the Cats beating them. But yeah, to be to beat
Louisville and to beat Tennessee the way that both of
(04:47):
these guys have in year number one, I think it's
just a dream. And then when you consider these two
teams could still make deep runs in the NCAA tournament,
I mean, you're talking about it just a wildly dream
start to year number one and in their ten years
here at UK.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
So, the men have some games left, They've got two games.
It's their final week of the regular season. But the
women will start SEC tournament play now on Friday in
the quarterfinals at two point thirty, Georgia and Arkansas will play.
The winner then gets the five seed Oklahoma. The winner
of that one will play Kentucky on Friday. But like
you just mentioned a second ago, entering this week, Charlie
(05:23):
Kream of ESPN with Bracketology has Kentucky a firm three seed,
which means they would get to host the first two
rounds and probably even have a play in game depending
on what ends up happening with the final seedings. But
first year for Kenny Brooks at Kentucky to be able
to host a tournament game for the Wildcats for the
(05:44):
first time in a long time, It's got to be
an exciting prospect to think about a weekend where you're
going to have the NCAA tournament on the men's side
at Rupp Arena and the NCAA tournament on the women's
side at Historic Memorial Coliseum. That's just a basketball fans
right there in Lexington.
Speaker 6 (06:02):
Yeah, no better city to do it right in Likexington
than to have those first two rounds. And I understand
Kentucky on the men's side, they can't play inside Rupp
Aerina for obvious reasons, but it's still cool and really
awesome for the city and for the venue and for
the university quite frankly, to have that first and second
round for the men here in Lexington. And as you mentioned,
(06:23):
how about a first year in the new Historic Memorial Coliseum.
I mean, you have volleyball make a deep run into
the NCAA Tournament host the first couple of rounds there
for the NCAA Tournament, Women's gymnastics their top ten, they're
going to make a deep run, and then women's basketball
getting to host more than likely postseason basketball inside historic
Memorial College sums. So it's great to see that the
(06:46):
investment was met with great results as well. But yeah,
I'm really excited about the I know we're going to
be a little tied up with on the men's side
unfortunately to really get to enjoy the first and second
round inside Ruperina. And I know there will be a
lot of folks from out of town coming into town
for those games, but I hope the find folks a
Lexington get a chance to enjoy some of those games.
(07:07):
Of course, around the Kentucky women at home, and then
the Kentucky men wherever they get slotted to go.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Just about a minute left in this opening segment, here, Andrew,
and just real quick your thoughts with Georgia Amore and
Clara Strack. Both of them are nominees for postseason awards.
I would be shocked if they're not on some kind
of SEC honoree list at the end when the awards
are announced later this week. I know Georgia Amore was
just announced as one of the five finalists for the
(07:35):
Nancy Lieberman National point Guard of the Year. And when
you look at the numbers, I mean Georgia has accounted
for over fifty percent of the scoring for Kentucky and
SEC play. She's number three in the nation and assist
per game and total assists in the SEC. She's top
ten and scoring, free throw percentage, three point percentage top
five and three pointers made. And she's also ninth nationally
(07:59):
in points produced per game at nearly twenty points. She's
so she if Kentucky's averaging eighty points a game, she's
accounting for a fourth of their scoring on a nightly
basis just a phenomenal season.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
Yeah, there's no better point guard, I don't think in
the country. If there is, there's, it's a very short list.
So I'd be super shocked not to see her on
any SEC list. And I think with Claire Strack, you
hear the respect she got postgame from the Tennessee game.
I think there's a lot of staffs opposing staffs that
would agree. And I know it's beyond just the staffs
(08:35):
that that makes those lists, but I think they would
agree that those two are very, very deserving, especially with
all the wins that they accumulated.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
No doubt about it. We're chatting with Andrew Cappus tonight
on Clark's Popping Shot BBN Radio. He does a lot
of different things for the network, from hosting studio for
men's basketball to also being a play by play voice
for baseball, softball, volleyball, you name it, and we'll continue
chatting with him here in just a moment here on

Speaker 3 (11:11):
The Kentucky Women getting set for the SEC Tournament. They'll
open play on Friday at two thirty. The men have
a week left in the regular season Andrew they'll host
LSU tomorrow night at seven o'clock and then on Saturday
it'll be Kentucky at Missouri. That's a noon tip to
wrap up the regular season. And obviously this past Saturday,
we heard from Mark Pope earlier tonight, this past Saturday
(11:34):
was a tall task against number one Auburn. And then
you add in on top of the final result, the
loss of Jackson Robinson for the season with that wrist injury,
and Kentucky trying to fight through a lot of adversity
here down the stretch, but an opportunity to grab two
big wins to build momentum heading into the SEC tournament.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
Yeah, it's a huge week and I think one of
the under reported things and I see folks talking about
it in some areas and not others in terms of
the national pundits, is how difficult it is to have
these guys kind of come in and out of the lineup.
And in no way am I saying that Jackson Robinson
news is good not And it really really stinks because
(12:16):
we know how hard Jackson worked, not just when he
was hurt, but when he wasn't hurt. Everybody could see
his work ethic when he was here during the summer
and then obviously when he was healthy and then he
was working super hard to get back and that picture
just steps stays in my mind after the game from
this past weekend of just how crushed he was to
(12:36):
have that season kind of formally come to a close.
But at the end of the day, they need to
know who's going to be there. And I think, well,
part of the struggles the last couple of weeks, especially defensively,
have been because the lineups have been so different on
a night to night basis, because you are trying at
that point, we're trying to work back in Jackson Robinson
(12:57):
trying to work back in Lamont, Butler to work back
in Andrew Carr when he wasn't one hundred percent. So
you look at the the bad news is and that's
Jackson Robinson's out for the year. The good news is
Lamont seems to be getting better. I know he's got
that bionic tape job on his on his shoulder that
that you know, does make me nervous, but I'm not
a doctor. And then Andrew Carr again not a doctor,
(13:20):
not the chiropractor, but it seems like he's starting to
feel much much better, just at least results oriented. You
look at him being able to go deeper into games
and be more of a focal point offensively. So if
you can get those two guys back to where they
need to be or even close to where they were
earlier in the year, I think you have something to
work with even without Jackson. It's crushing of a loss
is that is in the lineup, and I think these
(13:42):
last two games, as you mentioned, are a great opportunity
because you have an LSU team that is in the bottom,
you know, the right down with with South Carolina in
terms of their success this year, so hopefully can have
a I don't want to call it a get right game,
but an opportunity to maybe look at that lineup that
it should be the rest of the year against LSU
(14:02):
and then go see what you can do on the
road in a really tough environment against the Missouri team
that is really really good, that will probably have a
lot to play for. Cats might have a lot to
play for on Saturday in Missouri, might have a lot
to play for. They might have a top four seat
at stakes. So it's a huge week for the Cats,
but it's crushing as this Jackson injury is. It's certainly
(14:23):
not the end.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
No question about it. And I was just sitting here
thinking about over the last week or so some of
the guys that have really stepped up, and obviously Kentucky's
going to need a little bit more. But when you
think about the job of MARII Williams has done. How
fun was it to see the way Amari guarded Jeni
Broome of Auburn on Saturday. I thought defensively, Amari stood
(14:46):
tall most of the afternoon, and we've seen him come
up offensively on the other end of the floor with
some big plays as well.
Speaker 6 (14:53):
And he's doing it in a role that he's not
totally accustomed to, in that point center role. And I
know he's playing it less with Lamont Butler back, but
I wonder if it starts to kind of continue to
be a trend, especially with Jackson Robinson, who is the
secondary ball handler, being out for the year. I don't
know if there's a guy on this roster that has
helped his professional opportunities outside of maybe otega Oway this year,
(15:18):
than Amari Williams. I don't know where he factors in
into the NBA, but man, I find it hard to
believe that there's not a team at the next level
that wouldn't become better by having him on the roster,
especially with what he's done this season in Lexington and
all the roles that he's filled for this team. He's
not been your traditional five, So I know you can
kind of nitpick a little bit a bit and say, well,
(15:41):
you could be a better rebounder or this or that,
but when you remember that he's trying to play basically
three positions in one game, sometimes you really respect what
he'd done this year. And I think the key to
the tournament to tournament success is going to be through
that five spot with Amary Williams and the development of
Brandon Garrison because when they both play well, I don't
think it's coincidence that when they both play well, it's
(16:02):
typically those games the Kentucky wins.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
And you've got to find a way. And it's weird
to say this because otega Oway has been consistently scoring
double figures all year long, but against Bama and Auburn
six combined points on two of twelve shooting. Sandwiched in
between that was twenty eight points against Oklahoma, So it
just goes back to just finding a little bit of consistency.
(16:27):
But also I think always going to start seeing more
opponent game plans around him, and that's something he's going
to have to adjust to as you get into tournament
time because you don't have that Jackson Robinson three point
shot protecting you outside. Kobe Brea also is going to
have to step up and make some shots as well.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
That's the biggest thing, and I think that's maybe the
biggest challenge that the coaching staff has on their plate.
You could look at it as the bigger challenges that's
replacing Jackson Robinson. That's the obvious one, right, But I
think the challenge within the challenge is that will now
tega Oway doesn't have that complimentary player to him, that
complimentary score in Jackson Robinson. And I think that's why
(17:07):
you're seeing some of the struggles of otega Oway again
in compartments, because he was so phenomenal against Oklahoma. He
was basically the reason they're down the stretch. Statistically proven
that he was the reason why they won that game.
So but I think that's something this staff really embraces.
I think head coach Mark Cope and his assistant, I
think they embraced that type of challenge, and I think
(17:27):
these players embrace that challenge. So just look at the
way they played shorthanded in other games. You know, they
went into Knoxville and beat Tennessee, a very good Tennessee
team without Lamon Butler, very shorthanded that night. They've adjusted
to not having Kerk Cresa. I mean, everybody makes a
big deal about them playing without a you know, with
only one point guard. I guess right now with Lamont Butler,
(17:49):
but they played quite a few games this year without
any point guard because Kerk Cresa being out since Thatt
Kinzaga game. So I think it's it's a challenge that
this staff is going to embrace, a challenge that these
players are going to embrace. But I think it is
the biggest one, and that is how do you create
a secondary score on the perimeter alongside otega Oway? And
(18:11):
I know he's not a perimeter guy, but having a
perimeter guy to complement otega Oway, I think it's key
to keeping him in that fifteen to twenty point range
in which Kentucky can be successful.
Speaker 3 (18:21):
He's Andrew Kappas, I'm Darren Hedrick. Will have one final

Speaker 3 (21:28):
BBN Game Day Vital Segment for this week's Clark's Pumping
Shop BBN Radio Darren Heddrick alongside Andrew Kappas, who's been
a busy man alternating basketball baseball just like I have
been the last couple of weeks. We've also heard him
do some volleyball in the fall, covering that deep tournament
(21:52):
run in SEC Championship for Craig Skinner's squad. And Andrew,
you and I both had a chance to see the
twenty twenty five version the Kentucky baseball team, and it's
been fun so far. They're coming off a sweep of
hofstra It's been fun getting to know a lot of
new faces, but also see a brand new team come together.
After we got accustomed to all those faces that ended
(22:14):
up in Omaha last year, they're gone and now we're
seeing a brand new group of guys coming together and
trying to reload and find that road to the College
World Series again.
Speaker 6 (22:27):
Yeah, I still remember the question that I asked head
coach Nick Ninjeon in his first pregame interview of the
year right before the season opener in Lipscomb there in
Nashville a couple of weeks ago, and I just asked
him how the offseason went for him, and he let
out a big sigh and said it was pretty stressful.
This is something to that effect, because he had to
replace twenty nine guys that was on that we're on
(22:48):
that Omaha team. That's the thing, though, when you have
success like that, a lot of times it's going to
be with upperclassmen that are going to get drafted or graduate,
and then you're obviously going to have one or two
or three transfer guys. But that's what happens, and success
kind of brings that and twenty nine new guys, as
you said, lots of new faces. So it has been
(23:09):
fun and it has been fun to see that culture
kind of get installed because last year it was it
was basically year two right of culture for most of
the guys on the team, if not more than year two,
whereas pretty much for every contributor on this team outside
of a couple, it's year one, not just year one,
but week two, week three, week four of it as
(23:29):
far as the regular season. So it's going to be
a process. It's why you play these games in February
and March ahead of SEC play, which is actually sneaking
up on us here in a couple of weeks against
Georgia right after this following weekend or this upcoming week
and I should say with Wofford, it's right into SEC play,
So no rest for the weary or the wicked, as
(23:50):
they say.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
That's right. Well, and we've got a good look at
this team. You've been on the road with them twice
and they played five games last week. They're going to
play five games again this week. And I think it's
huge that even though they're playing eleven games in fifteen days,
that's big for the coaching staff to get a look
at the depth of the roster, to see guys in
(24:11):
maybe some extended roles, but also some in depth in
game situations. How do they react when opponents get runs
going on the bases or build momentum. And so far,
this is a group that's passed the test against its competition.
We've seen them rally from behind, we've seen them hang
on the leeds late. We've seen them blowout teams and
we've seen them I know you've seen them win pitchers duels.
(24:32):
So they're figuring out different ways to win.
Speaker 6 (24:35):
Yeah, that's the biggest thing this time of year is
how can you win games. It's not always going to
be the slugfest, it's not always going to be the
pitching gem. The question is can you win in different ways?
And this team has proved so far that they can.
And they even had a game on Friday that you covered,
Darren that you might argue that maybe they should have
(24:55):
lost that game. They did not play very well in
a number of bassets, But that's a baseball season, right
play sixty plus games. You have to win games that
you don't play well in. If that makes sense, Oh yeah,
because it's just too long of a season to where
you're not going to play well in some of those games.
You don't want it to be a habit. And luckily
for the Cats, really that was the only game of
(25:16):
the series that they didn't play well. But I think
that's a good sign. I think if you don't play
well in one of the three games, but you still
sweep and you win that game. That's a great sign.
And to your point, this time of year, you're still
trying to figure out who you have because so many
of these new faces are coming in from places that
don't have the same type of baseball pedigree as the SEC.
(25:38):
And the perfect example is Carson Hanson, who he did
not see against Lipscomb. He was an All Horizon League performer,
had eleven home runs, drove in over sixty at UDUB
Milwaukee last year. But that's not a very good baseball conference.
But he got put into a situation where he could
succeed the second pitch that he saw as a Wildcat
