Welcome back into our show, The Marx Stoop Show, presented
by UK Healthcare and Defensive Coordinator Brad White is joining
us for this open week. You guys have been through
one of these already, so I'm sure it's the same routine.
But I guess what happens that if anything you do differently.
I know Mark said he did try to do a
couple of things differently. The last one will be pretty
(05:28):
much the same as the South Carolina week.
Speaker 13 (05:30):
Yeah, it's gonna have a lot of similarities. I think
a big factor is again trying to gain depth, you know,
as you go.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Through this season.
Speaker 13 (05:40):
So we try to do a little bit of good
on good against each other so you can.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Get some fastball action.
Speaker 13 (05:47):
Offense, first defense, you know, and some of those like today,
some of the guys that have played a significant out
of reps, you know, you want to make sure you
get them healed up. But some of those younger guys
are whether the backups or they're the the third guys
that that you're gonna need eventually. Uh, you get them
some some reps that are are full speed, not just
(06:09):
against a card team, and so that when it's their
time to step into the game, they're they're good to go.
So like you try to do much of that as
you can, and then if there is some crossover for
future opponents, uh, you know, it ties in.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
And it was a disappointing day for you guys on
your side of the ball in terms of how it
played out. What did you see when you put the
tape in?
Speaker 13 (06:32):
Yeah, you know what was the most disappointing piece is that,
you know, when coach talked about like, the guys played hard,
and they played really well on first down. Very few
teams play as well on first down against Georgia as
we did. They We we forced over ten second and longs.
But that's that's where we did not play well. Was
(06:54):
that second and long and where you've given yourself an opportunity,
uh to get into and long and then you can
bring your pressure package, you can get after uh, you know,
the quarterback on third down get off the field. And
you know there was self inflicted things. You know, obviously
tackling was a was an issue, you know, and obviously
(07:15):
they've got good players and credit to them, but those
those are plays that I know our guys can make.
You know, we have they have a blocker out in front,
and we have two defenders, Like the goal is one's
got to vice the and leverage the ball, the other
one pins it to the ground. And we got loose
in some of those situations. And so all of a sudden,
instead of it being a third and nine or third
(07:36):
and eight, it's third and one and third and two.
When you know, it's hard to play defense, you know,
when you're you're playing third down and four or less all.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Day and nobody talks about a stat of second down defense.
You'll hear a lot about how you're defending them on
first down, especially against the run, or third down defense obviously,
and it was odd that they were they had a
high third down conversion rate, but that was because they
had a lot of third and probably four or less
opportunity less.
Speaker 13 (08:03):
Yeah, and it all stemmed from second down, you know.
They again you know, not to bore with stats, but
like on p and ten, that's so like drive starters.
You know, we talked about we were six of nine efficiency,
so we held into three yards or less on like
first first play of a drive, and then on we
were over seventy percent on just earned first down efficiency.
(08:26):
But it was again, it came down to second down
and it's something that we have to get fixed to
give ourselves opportunities to be super aggressive on third down.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I saw I remember you saying this at one point
of for another coach you say it too. But there
are when you see miss tackles. A lot of times
it's because guys didn't have the proper positioning either alignment
before snap I guess, or getting squared up on the ball,
and so they're they're not tackling the way you would
like them to and staid, maybe they're lunging or something.
(08:56):
Did you see that?
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 13 (08:58):
Unfortunately, there was a variety of styles in this game,
and some where it was you know, lunging and jumping
and hey, sometimes against good players, like you want to
take your shot, but the player you're vicing with needs
to keep leverage on his blocker and when that gets loose,
it creates, you know, seams and allows a ball care
(09:20):
to get extra yards, leaky yards. I don't think we
ran our feet well enough through tackles to your point.
I think sometimes we were narrow instead of having a
little bit of a base, we sat back. We need
to be aggressive, We needed to and that's what I
talked about with the guys today. Was very much about
(09:40):
staying confident. You know, you're in a high leverage situation
in that moment, you're out in space.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
You know it's ABC, it's.
Speaker 13 (09:48):
Noon time, like you know in the back of your mind,
all right, friends, family, everybody's watching. You have to trust
yourself to go make that play. Not hey, let's just
hope I can get this thing to the ground and
breathe a sigh of relief, and we need to be
aggressive in terms of how we play. You know, in
(10:09):
the teams that have been really good here in the past,
they've had that they've had that mentality, that's that killer
instinct that I'm better than anybody on this field and
I'm gonna go I'm gonna make this play. And so
we have to do a good job as a coaching
staff of just continuing to instill that confidence. Like in
this league, you can't not be confident if you're on
(10:31):
the football field, Like if you think you can hide
or get away or you know, find a hope, it's
gonna go to somewhere else and somebody else is gonna
make the play for you, Like I guarantee, the ball is.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Gonna find you.
Speaker 13 (10:43):
And so as long as we can continue to build
that confidence, because they're doing a lot of good things
and now it's just finding that consistency.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
We're talking with defensive coordinator brand White at the moment.
A little later, a couple of players are going to
join us for this edition of The Mark Stoop Show,
presented by UK Healthcare, and we'll be right back on

chatting with Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White. If you have
a question, it's at UK Sports Network on X or
you can call on the Clark's Pumping Shop phone line.
At a former player.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Ask me.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
To ask you were you guys stunting more in this game?
And it was there a reason that he thought he
saw more stunts up front? And maybe was that because
of something you saw that you could have some effectiveness
of the first and plays against Georgia.
Speaker 13 (15:05):
Yeah, I mean maybe a little bit more than usual
from a movement standpoint, trying to create so they had
several at least two that started and then they'd rotate
in freshman alignment, So trying to confuse them from both
front and movement standpoint to.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Create negative plays.
Speaker 13 (15:27):
And again obviously like we talked about in the first section,
that it worked on first, right and not as not
as much you know, on second, trying to create also
a little bit of pass rush, you know, by not
being so stagnant, trying to get our guys a couple
of you know, free free runs of the QB and
(15:47):
we were able to hit you know, Stockton quite a bit,
but obviously needed to get there a touch earlier in
some of those situations, but it's what we do. We
do move the front quite a bit, you know, especially
on early downs.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Seems like your guys on the defensive front are piling
up some stats, making tackles. TfL's getting some pressure on
the quarterback McKees, who will be talking to later. Tavian
Gaston has been in a lot of tackles. I think
a game before last Khalil had the most he's ever had.
Are those guys playing as well as those numbers would
(16:26):
suggest they are?
Speaker 13 (16:27):
They the front right now, you know, is arguably the
most consistent piece, you know, of of our defense. And
I know, you know there were people that that that
thought that would be you know, a question mark coming in,
and they took that personal.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
They they've done a really good job.
Speaker 13 (16:43):
Coach Stewart does an unbelievable job with the d line,
and they've played really strong and really firm through these
first five games. They've they've generated internal pressure, you know. Uh,
same thing with with David Gusta.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
You know, yeah, I didn't mention him, but yeah, he's.
Speaker 13 (17:00):
But all those guys, all those guys up front have
done a really nice job both you know, against the
inside run game and generating some pass rush. And so
it's important that that we continue to to play physical
up there and again make those plays on the perimeter.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
To be the defense that we want to be.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
I want to ask you about a couple of rookies.
CJ Works made two tackles for loss. One in the
situation late where you ended up getting a fourth down stop.
He had, excuse me, I think a TfL in that sequence.
I know you were telling Jeff and I recently about
how much upside you think is there for CJ. But
(17:45):
it looks like it's maybe starting to come together for him.
Speaker 13 (17:48):
Yeah, And I think that's These last two bye weeks
have been big, right, because you understood sort of coming
out of fall camp, which you could potentially have, it's
hard to play in the SEC as a true freshman,
especially you know, at an outside linebacker position, and so
in getting as many reps you know, in practice to
(18:09):
build that confidence up.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
And it's it's both for him and beyondest, it's for
me too, right, Like you go into trust, you put a.
Speaker 13 (18:17):
True freshman out there against a team like Georgia or
South Carolina and you're like, okay, I mean he's going
to have ten other guys like leaning on him to
make sure he knows exactly what to do. The pictures
are going to change. Do we have him dialed in
and coached up enough. And you know, to his credit,
he takes it really serious. He works hard. He wants
(18:37):
to be good, you know, in his length and his
physicality has shown up and he's made some plays here.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
And you know, when you're playing a true freshman, you're
going to sacrifice a little bit of what you would
get with a much more experienced guy. But the trade
off that you hope goes enough in your direction is
for him to make those kinds of plays that he
made on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
It is in more than just that.
Speaker 13 (19:01):
There were some other plays where he set some really firm,
violent edges and you just we weren't able. We didn't
do it last year. We didn't really need to because
Zion was such a good player there to the to
the field as an apex overhang, you know, nickelback. But
(19:23):
we missed the days of the Jordan Wrights right where
you could play two big outside backers and we could
get big on the field. And that's what he gives us.
He gives us the ability to essentially play five bigs
at a time. We can play with a jack or
three down and him out to the field and now
they can't, you know, get into two tight end sets
(19:43):
and see then just physically maul us like he can
come and he can set firm edges and then obviously
gives you something in pass rush. And so yeah, the
goal is to continue to bring him along, not give
him too much, but where he can play fast and
be comfortable when he's in the game.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Yeah, jw you guys called him Jordan Wright, just had
a knack for making big.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Plays, big plays, big plays.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
The other guy I want to ask you about is
a true freshman. Is Grant Great and he was pressed
into service ahead of schedule in the Eastern Michigan game
when you were shorthanded at corner and played I think
most of most, if not all, of the second half
that night, and then Saturday had his first pick, which
had to be a big boost of confidence for him.
(20:30):
But you've been hit by and then you unusually hard
by injuries at that one position. So to have a
freshman like this be able to come through for you,
it has been a huge plus.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Yeah, you know again, similar to to CJ.
Speaker 13 (20:44):
We've we've got to be mindful in terms of how
many reps like you can play and in what situations
you put him in you would you got to be mindful.
Is not to put him out there to where he
can get exposed or put on an island. You know,
it's still there's a lot that a freshman has to
deal with and learning the speed of sec receivers is
(21:05):
a big deal.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
And so.
Speaker 13 (21:07):
As a play caller, you have to be mindful of
who's out on the field, especially when it's a freshman corner,
if it's a freshman outside back, or if it's somebody
that's new that hasn't played. You have to make sure
you make play calls that can keep them in positions
to be successful and build the confidence. And we said
again the first thing is if you can't be confident,
(21:29):
good luck having success. And so we have to continue
to put these players in position to have success that
build that confidence.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
The first big injury issue at that cornerback position was
DJ Waller, and I know early in training camp he
got dinged a little bit and Mark was a little
frustrated because he said he's playing as well as anybody
on the defense right now, and I'm sure everybody's got
their fingers crossed that this next game will be the
one that he gets to get back out on the field.
(21:59):
For you, what different would he make if you get
him backward Texas.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, I think there's a compounding effect.
Speaker 13 (22:05):
When you have injuries, it forces other guys to play
more snaps and maybe more than.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
They need to be playing.
Speaker 13 (22:17):
So when you get a guy, especially a good player,
back now, you spread the workload across and guys can
play faster longer. You know, let's just say you got
seventy plays in a game, and man, the best scenario
for an individual will be for him to play forty.
But if you get an injury, now, all of a sudden,
(22:39):
he's playing fifty five or he's playing sixty, and he's
not nearly the player that he is when he only
plays forty. And then the exposure starts to happen, and
then there's a truck like the player deep down knows, okay,
I'm getting tired, you know what, I'm gonna play softer,
or his eyes aren't in the right spot where his
(23:00):
technique starts to slip because of those added reps. So
to get him back, and then you say, Okay, now
you've got JQ and to Ryan and DJ.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
You know you feel better about that.
Speaker 13 (23:13):
And you know you mentioned Grant and uh you know
guys like Knaves that have that have played snaps and
so now all of a sudden, you can distribute those
snaps and guys can just play in a lotted amount
really fast.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
From Lee a question at UK Sports Network says, defenders,
he sees pulling up and not delivering the hit. Maybe
a little bit to what you were talking about earlier.
He says, take the penalty. There are too many mistackles
allowing the quarterback to run. Do you see some of
that not being aggressive enough?
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Take the penalty.
Speaker 4 (23:49):
Well, I don't think you want to take the penalty.
I get that, but you want to see guys obviously
that's the.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Key, right Like.
Speaker 13 (23:59):
It go back to confidence, It goes back to running
your feet and we talk about running up on their toes,
you know, and not sitting in a chair. If if
if you take a side shot of a guy tackling,
if it looks like he's sitting down in a chair
as he's approaching, that means he's shifting his weight backwards.
And so if you're shifting your weight backwards, you have
(24:20):
no forward momentum and strike. So we want to obviously
keep our chest over our thighs, run our feet, run
up all the way on their toes and through and that's.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Again that's the goal.
Speaker 13 (24:32):
And you know, sometimes listen if it's if it's a
big running back and it's you know, a smaller corner,
like you have to vary. Sometimes you have to just
cut across the thighs and take your shot. Sometimes you
have to, you know, you just.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Sort of have to.
Speaker 13 (24:52):
You have to take the charge in that regard and
you're going to give up some leaky yards. But when
it's on the perimeter, we definitely need to be better.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Gotta get to a break. It's the Markstoo Show percent
about UK healthcare and we'll be right back here on
the UK Sports Network.

Speaker 4 (27:26):
We are back and we are chatting with you. K
defensive Coordinator Bred White for one more segment. If you
have a question, you can shoot it into us at
UK Sports Centwork or call on the Clark Smumping Shop
phone line. Your guys are going through a rough patch
at the moment with the three start in the league.
Do you have to talk to them about keeping their
(27:48):
heads up or is this a group that can handle
that for the most part on their own.
Speaker 10 (27:55):
No.
Speaker 13 (27:55):
I think we have to talk about it, and we
we had a very blunt, an open discussion today to
start our defensive unit meeting, and you know, a variety
of top and we watched half the game together as
a whole defense just you know, a lot of times
when you go watch the game, you split up into
your groups and you watch you know what you did wrong,
(28:18):
you know, as a position group. But there's a lot
of times you just need to sit in there and
understand what everybody else is going through. And it's not
simply that you know you made a mistake and you're like, yep,
I own it, like I should do something different, but
understand like how that affects everybody else in that room,
(28:39):
and and not just on that play, but going forward,
because if if you lose leverage, and we talk about
leverage being a you're forcing the ball back inside to
all the help. When you lose that, the very next
time it occurs, the person that was inside you before
doesn't necessarily they're like, well, is this ball going to
(29:01):
go outside again? And so they take a slightly different angle.
They they go a little bit higher. Well, now you
do set it and the ball cuts back right. And
so it's talking about and it's it's understanding the trust factor.
And I think the only way you gain trust is
by talking about it, you know, in like in talking
(29:22):
together and watching the film and then going out to
the practice field and executing together. Uh, it's hard to
do on an individual basis. So yes, I think that
we do understand, you know, that things need to be
discussed in what needs to be changed. But listen, we're
not gonna throw the baby out with the bathwater like that.
(29:44):
Again that we're doing so many good things, it's just
it's in those critical moments, Uh, we have to be better.
Speaker 4 (29:52):
Yeah, it's we were talking about how well the guys
upfront are playing, but it's not like they can say, well,
we're doing our job. We're gonna leave the meeting because
you know, we we we've played well in this game,
because they're part of a whole unit.
Speaker 13 (30:06):
Yeah, and and and the front would be the first
raise their hand. And then there was there were still
mistakes up front. There's mistakes at every level. There's mistakes
on play calls, Like there's plenty of play calls I
wish I could take back, you know, the the mistakes
that happen up front, you know, have a chance to
(30:28):
be erased by second and third level defenders. Mistakes that
happen in the second and third level, they're not getting erased,
and those are the ones that really stand out to people.
So everybody's got things that they need to fix, and
everybody knows that, and everybody knows, you know, how much
(30:50):
we're leaning on each other. And the front's been doing
an unbelievable job. We asked them to take multiple gaps
at times so we can do some things in the
back end to lessen the stress back there, and so
then it moves the hat and the stress to the
front and they've responded, and we're gonna need them to
do it, and we're going to continue to move the
(31:12):
stress around the defense, so not just one group or
one person has to hold it all the time.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
These days, there is so much roster turnover for every
team in college football with portal and in al and
all of that. Does that make it more challenging to
develop the level of leadership you would like since there's
so many guys that haven't been in your program before.
Speaker 13 (31:34):
Yeah, you know what, I think it for guys that
come in and you know, and we've got keys right here,
and he's going to join the show.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
That he's been in college football for several years.
Speaker 13 (31:51):
But it takes time for guys to you know, sort
of feel confident enough that like they can prove to
everybody around them that not only I've I know my
job and I'm putting the time in to then be
able to, you know, step into a vocal leadership role.
Like it's no different than anybody we've had in the past.
(32:12):
You know, Jacques Jones was the same way. Like he
he didn't feel like he could do it at the beginning,
you know, and he had DeAndre square and he didn't
want to overstep DeAndre. And so when you get new
players in, they go about it the right way. I've
been really proud of our guys. They they're trying to
(32:32):
prove it to the team in the locker room that
they do it the right way before they verbally.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Take that chance.
Speaker 13 (32:39):
And I think we're getting to the point of the
season right now where okay, guys have you know, they.
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Have built up equity, you know, they they they've built.
Speaker 13 (32:47):
That trust, that confidence that now they can go ahead
and they can say okay, guys listen, and they can
they can be a voice in the huddle and everybody's
gonna stop and listen.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
But yet it is.
Speaker 13 (32:59):
It is more challenging when rosters change because you don't
have those guys necessarily in your building from their freshman year.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
That is Brad White, UK defensive coordinator, joining us here

Welcome back into the Marx TEP Show presented by UK Healthcare,
and we have a couple of players coming up with
these next segments, and first up is Fitzvian McKee's Humphrey Grace,
a transfer in from South Dakota but grew up in Cincinnati.
Speaker 14 (36:44):
Right, yes, sir, we grew up scenario.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
Let's talk a little bit about the adjustment from where
you played last year and before to the Southeastern Conference.
What's the biggest adjustment for you?
Speaker 26 (36:56):
I think its adjust me it was just like annoying
let my teammates, just going into a different environment. Obviously
it's like way more people you play it fort uh
so just going I think that's just like the biggest
adjustment early.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
The tackles you're going up against probably just a shade
bigger than what you saw last year, Right.
Speaker 26 (37:13):
Yeah, I think this is probably a little bit more
like technically sound and just yeah, I would say bigger
as well.
Speaker 4 (37:19):
Uh you think got an ankle issue in the first
game and now seem to be certainly fully healthy because
you've had a good success in the last couple of games,
in particular getting to the quarterback and put some pressure on.
Do you feel one hundred percent now?
Speaker 26 (37:34):
Oh, yes, sir, I definitely feel it. I'm getting to
one hundred percent, you know. I wouldn't say a hundred
percent all the way, but I definitely am going in
the direction of Heley.
Speaker 14 (37:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
I guess when you're playing in this league, you never
you started one hundred percent maybe at the beginning of
the year, but you never get back there.
Speaker 14 (37:50):
Yeah, yeah, I definitely.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
What have you enjoyed most about being here at Kentucky
and playing in the SEC?
Speaker 14 (37:59):
I would say it's just like.
Speaker 26 (38:02):
Playing with just like great football players, you know, just
guys like behind me, guys next to me. I feel
like just playing a game those caliber guys. I'm playing
itst and I'm playing with So I'm just going to
work with those guys. I think that's like something that
I'm really excited about.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
As the defense as a group. Uh, do you feel
confident that you guys will get it figured out to
the level that you want to put your best performance
out on the field next time you go out there
against the Longhorns.
Speaker 14 (38:29):
Oh?
Speaker 26 (38:29):
Yes, I feel very confident in defense, you know, because
I feel like everybody is willing to learn that, everybody
is willing to do what they have to do to
make sure we're going ever going in the right direction.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
Moving forward, A little bit of a change culturally, and
I guess from South Dakota, right, I know, it's really
it's really cold there, right.
Speaker 14 (38:46):
Yeah, yeah, I was definitely.
Speaker 26 (38:48):
I mean I've got cold here yet, but I don't
think like when you get cold here's gonna be anything
close to that.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
But you, as we said, grew up in Cincinnati Princeton
High School, right. I think I remember I looked this
stet up earlier the season in talking about you. They
have sent thirteen players to the National Football League, So
there's a lot of tradition coming out of Princeton High School.
Speaker 14 (39:09):
Yes, there, it is definitely.
Speaker 26 (39:10):
I think a couple of years ago we had somebody
like first round, So I think in the last few
years doesn't mean successful in like amplaicitent NFL.
Speaker 4 (39:19):
And that's something that coming up through that program, you're
probably really prepared as prepared as one could be to
go into college football coming out of a program like that, right.
Speaker 14 (39:30):
Yeah, I would.
Speaker 26 (39:31):
It's just like just like the preparation aspect, and just
like playing against good players as well. Obviously not I
like to the extended like the SEC, but you know,
just mentally, I think they get us prepared for that
a lot.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
What did you work on to get yourself ready to
make this transition from South Dakota to playing for Kentucky
and the SEC. What do you work on?
Speaker 26 (39:52):
I think like everything, just like obviously just knowing like
the mental aspect of the game is like that's a
big part, but physically as well. Just been in the
weight room and just development speed and good technique and
just learning stuff like that because that's like you need
those like when things get when everybody is like good players,
but technical like technique is like a big thing when
(40:12):
you get to that level.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Coach Twipe told me something about you that you don't
hear often a coach say about the players, but it
was an interesting dug out of information for our broadcast.
He said, you take the best notes of anybody in
when you guys are watching tape and preparing for an opponent.
(40:34):
What where did that come from for you? Was it
something you learned in a in a classroom or from
a parent or what.
Speaker 14 (40:41):
I think it's just like a long way.
Speaker 26 (40:43):
I think in my old school it kind of like
I think it was like a big thing there, but
it was just like personally, I did it even more
because I think it helped me a lot just understanding
like who I'm going agains or what are we doing
in this certain defense and just going back to it
so I can just be so I can execute at a
high level and whatever everything that we are doing.
Speaker 4 (41:02):
Yeah, sometimes if like if you're working at a math
problem show your work is helpful to understanding it. It's
if you're trying to understand something about an opponent that
you're going up against. Do you then go back and
maybe look at those notes again before the game?
Speaker 14 (41:16):
Oh yeah, definitely.
Speaker 26 (41:17):
I think I do that a lot, just understanding like okay,
during this I'm not gonna I was again into detail,
but like you know, just certain things when you see
like certain tennessees and certain formations and things like that,
you know what's coming, so you can just be prepared.
Speaker 4 (41:30):
And you've watched obviously a lot of tape in your life,
so you're able to sometimes pick up something that you
know it's a tell maybe or something where guys like
they'll talk about a picture tipping his pitches in baseball,
that you can pick something up from the way you
study it.
Speaker 26 (41:44):
Oh yeah, absolutely, definitely, Like backfields, you know how quarterbacks
you know, look how old lineman looks certain ways stuff
like that.
Speaker 4 (41:54):
The other thing that I remember from talking with Coach
White about you is he said, you have a great
first two steps because for the position you play, you know,
in the tackles in this league, Okay, some of the
guys are gonna be playing at the next level, so
really tough challenges to between you and the quarterback. So
is the speed the biggest asset that you have?
Speaker 26 (42:17):
H Yeah, I think speed is a big asset. But
I think also just like technique wise, it is something
that I like to try to pride my cell phone
as well, because I knew, like everybody has speed, everybody
has power, but like everybody don't how technique and everyone
can't be like teching me sound throughout the game. So
I think that's something that I try to pride my
cell phone and something that I'm really improving on.
Speaker 4 (42:36):
What about growing up and watching players maybe in the NFL,
Is there anybody that you watched and like, oh, I'd
like to model my game after him.
Speaker 14 (42:47):
I think I'll just watch a lot of players I
never really like.
Speaker 26 (42:50):
Looked at some man may I wanted to be just like,
but like just like him, I think I watched a
lot of players so like like TJ Y, even like
Josh Allen came here, Myles Garrett, just Serah places.
Speaker 4 (43:01):
Those are good ones. What do you see in your
teammates that gives you confidence that you guys will come
back with a strong performance against Texas, you.
Speaker 26 (43:13):
Know, because it's like nobody is like the police and
everybody understand like that we need to get better and
want it to get better and understanding that we need
to get better and just if we want to go
fullard like there's something that were chasing.
Speaker 4 (43:27):
Mcquise. I appreciate you coming in and visiting with us.
Did a good job, and grab something to eat and
we'll see a week from Saturday on the heeld.
Speaker 14 (43:35):

Speaker 4 (43:36):
That is mckeise, Humphrey Grace, South Dakota transfer started out
in Cincinnati and now playing valuable minutes for the Wildcats.

are joined now by the QB cut Her Bowlie joining
us here on the show and coming off a strong
(46:25):
performance in defeat down at Georgia. A couple of tds
in the one interception Peyton Manning was on the Manning Cast.
I think a couple of weeks ago, I saw this
clip where he and Eli were talking and Peyton lobbied
for those kinds of interceptions not to go on a
quarterbacks record. When you know it's fourth down, you have
to throw it. You got nothing to lose if you
don't throw it. So he was talking about in terms
(46:46):
of a hail Mary. But I don't know if we
can get if you can talk anybody into that taking
that one off your record. But Peyton would be with.
Speaker 14 (46:52):
You on that.
Speaker 4 (46:54):
But this was a performance where you guys did some
different things in the game. Plan to move the pocket,
some throw a little bit more to the running back
seth I think had three catches. You said you were
more comfortable. What did you like about the plan that
worked for you?
Speaker 14 (47:08):
Yeah? Absolutely.
Speaker 27 (47:09):
I think we're starting to find a little bit more
of an identity of kind of who we are. I
feel like we got into a flow better than we
kind of have been throughout this year. In that Georgia game,
you know what I mean, we kind of shot ourselves
in the foots on the foot on a lot of
those drives. It would just be the one play that
would set us back and we kind of get really
behind the sticks, and.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
That's really what was killing us.
Speaker 27 (47:31):
But you know, there's a lot of good guys who
did a lot of good things, and it was just
those like one play a drive, like I said, we'd
either get a penalty or just something would go wrong
on a play and we'd not execute it right and
we'd lose a few hours and kind of get behind
the sticks.
Speaker 4 (47:46):
Today was the media day for the basketball team, and
I was thinking about Jalen Low the point guard for
those guys, and Coach Pope said this, and Andrew Carr,
when I talked to him recently, said the same thing
that as the point guard, he said. They said, Jalen's
not afraid to get on somebody if he has to,
or to be assertive when he has to. It's the
same way the quarterbacks, kind of like the point guard
(48:08):
for a football team. And we saw you get a
little frustrated at times the other day. Uh, And that's
something that are you feeling more comfortable in kind of
asserting yourself as the leader now? Yeah?
Speaker 27 (48:18):
Absolutely, I think that really comes out there when I'm
out there on the field. You know, I'm a competitor
and I want to win. I want our guys to
play to the best of their ability. I want to
hold them to the highest standard. And I think that
they would respect that and they would like that for
me to do that for them, you know. And when
you're yelling at your guys out there on the field,
you know, it's back and forth, but that stays on
the field and the first offense. Yeah, it's nothing personal.
(48:41):
We're just trying to be the best team we can be.
And when I need a lot of fire under those guys,
I can do that. And I felt like, yeah, there
was some definitely in that times in that game where
I sold some emotion and I think our guys need
that sometimes for sure.
Speaker 4 (48:56):
Let's talk good to Mike Hartline last week. He's at
offensive quality control coach for you guys. But does it
help to have a guy like that that you can
go to that has not only played the position but
played it here?
Speaker 27 (49:08):
Absolutely? Coach Hartlines somebody I meet with endlessly. I'm always
talking to him, asking him questions, just whatever I have
thoughts on and he's been a great source to go to.
He's been an awesome guy to go to. Like you said,
he not only played here, but it's just nice to
have someone down there on the field with you that
kind of kind of speak the same language as you.
(49:29):
They're out there, they've seen what you're seeing through your eyes.
They kind of know, they know the concepts, they know
everything you're dealing with, so it just makes the communication
that much easier.
Speaker 4 (49:40):
I remember we were telling the story on the air
recently when Coach Brooks was here and had Andre Woodson,
and Andre was an understudy to a starter, and then
I think is a you know five, he became the starter,
but he had a rough season that he would would
tell you, and then had two great years to finish
up became one of the all time greats here. And
(50:02):
I remember Coach Brooks telling me that he going into
that six season wasn't one hundred percent sure that Andre
was going to be his guy moving forward. They had
had a battle for the quarterback position, but he said
it was in actually a loss when the way that
Andre competed that convinced him that that was his guy.
He knew he had the right guy. You had a
(50:23):
a and everybody had a tough night down at South Carolina.
You came back and then in talking to coach Hampden,
he said what Cutter came in on Sunday the next day,
showed no signs of being affected by that and acknowledged mistakes.
He got right back to work. Is that kind of
how it's always been for you?
Speaker 1 (50:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 27 (50:40):
Absolutely, just got to get back right back to where
that South Carolina was a huge learning game. I think
we did some good things in that game, but continued
to shoot ourselves to foot a little bit on a
lot of things, and think just taking everything from that
game and kind of learning from it. We took a
lot more steps in that Georgia game, and we're still
not close to where we want to be, but we
(51:00):
are taking steps in the right direction. And we also
have a ton of young talent on our roster who's
making flashes, which is super exciting.
Speaker 4 (51:08):
For going to talk about one of those guys, one
of the young guys when we come right back. One
segment left here on our show, It's the Mark Stoop Show,

Time for our Alumni Hall Question of the Week and
we deliver it to Cutter Bowling and then fans we
can get you to weigh in on it via social
media at Alumni Hall UK on X and you could
have a chance to win a gift card courtesy of
Alumni Hall. So what impressed you most about what cam
Miller did when he came in in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 27 (54:49):
What he really showed is he's going to put it
all out there, you know, he's going to be the
guys gonna come in.
Speaker 14 (54:54):
He's dedicated.
Speaker 27 (54:55):
This guy who came in late, he didn't get a
lot of reps in the fall camp just because of
how these things lay out. He got there at the
beginning of fall camp, didn't know any of the playbook.
But he's a guy who kind of just no matter
how many reps he was getting, whatever, he continued to
prepare like a starter each and every week, and finally
when his time came, he was ready to shine. He
was ready to do his thing because he had prepared
(55:16):
and he knew the offense well enough, and he trusted
himself enough to go out there and make those plays.
Speaker 14 (55:22):
I was really proud of him.
Speaker 4 (55:23):
That's a good insight because I've heard some fans say,
why hadn't he been playing, Well, he didn't actually start
learning the plays.
Speaker 27 (55:31):
Yeah, it's definitely tough. I early enrolled myself and that
was kind of a huge advantage from me. But it's
definitely got to be really tough coming in right when
fall camp starts, being your first day not only in
college but as a football player.
Speaker 4 (55:45):
When he makes a play or two like he did Saturday,
one of them was on a fourth down completion, and
you threw it in the right spot. But it wasn't
an easy catch certainly. Yeah, and so that has to
build his trust with you.
Speaker 14 (55:59):
Absolutely.
Speaker 27 (56:00):
He's a guy who got I got a lot of
reps with just running with the twos most of all
camp and everything like that. I got a lot of
run with Cam. I got a lot of extra working
with Kim because he's a guy who's constantly going to
be hitting me up.
Speaker 14 (56:11):
Cutter.
Speaker 27 (56:12):
You want to throw cuder, you want to work on this,
We want to work on that, you want to watch
film whatever. Cam's always down to be in there, be
in the facility, working and getting better. And I think
all the guys have seen that. Every every single dude
on the team has seen that. And when he's out
there making plays, no one's surprised. Everyone completely sees why
(56:32):
he's going out there and he's able to make plays.
Speaker 14 (56:35):
At a high level.
Speaker 4 (56:36):
We've heard the story now about how two of your
roommates are two of the tight ends, Willie Rodriguez and
Josh Kattis. Was talking to Willy about this last week.
I said who cooks? And he said, well, we all
split those duties up, and he said you were the
cheeseburger guy.
Speaker 27 (56:50):
Yeah, I learned, Yeah, I learned how to make some
easy smash burgers and they're pretty good and everybody liked them.
So I just kind of stuck with it and kind
of have on to that.
Speaker 4 (57:00):
He said. Willy said he made like usually pasta, and
they Josh was healthier, gain.
Speaker 27 (57:05):
Will He got a dish from his mom every time.
Speaker 4 (57:09):
And Cattis is the guy who's cooking healthier.
Speaker 27 (57:12):
Yeah for sure. Yeah, him and Lloyd were definitely cooking healthier.
Speaker 4 (57:15):
And you were telling me you guys did the thing
on Sunday where each the three of you each attributed.
Speaker 27 (57:19):
Yeah, we would all three cook a different dish, Like
we would rotate between like an appetizer type thing, like
a meal and like a dessert, and like we would
all three switch it up every week, and Josh's girlfriend
would judge it for us.
Speaker 4 (57:33):
Wells some good food here go take advantage of that.
We appreciate you coming out. Yeah, I appreciate you.
Speaker 14 (57:37):
That is QB.
