(05:53):
Seattle after an incredible second half comeback. There's all kinds
of stats, but I mean the fact that Gonzaga, the
program they are, had won one hundred and seventy five
games in a row when they led by ten or
more points and your guys came back and got the
win was quite impressive.
Speaker 16 (06:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:08):
I mean this and this Gonzaga program and what coach
Fused done is just it's breathtaking. One hundred and seventy
five games in a row, right, Yeah, that's insanity. I
mean that, that just is an amazing statistic and we're
glad to put it into that for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Your guys, you've got some bad news with kerk crease
and needing surgery. Nice though, that that look like it's
a season ending injury.
Speaker 16 (06:31):
So that's good to hear. Yeah, it was.
Speaker 6 (06:33):
You know, when you think about Kerr, I mean, you know,
one of the great things about athletics is you get
to it kind of rips you open and shows the
whole world your heart.
Speaker 16 (06:41):
Right, it just does.
Speaker 6 (06:42):
AND's for so many things in our life we get
to prepare for and we get to script them, and
we get to think through them and find the ideal
response and the correct answer and all the things we
want to do. And in this moment we watched it
on film together as a team, but in this moment,
you know, Lands breaks his foot, falls to the ground
(07:04):
and immediately jumps up, hobbles back as fast as he
can and goes straight vertical trying to trying to save
a transition defense possession. And just in that moment, you
got to see kerk Chris, you got to see him
ripped open, unscripted, just how he's built and what he's
made of, and how much he cares about his team
and how much he cares about winning and how much
(07:24):
he cares about competing. He didn't have time to prep
for that, or think it through or do whatever it
was just his guts and it was a really really
special moment for everybody on our team. As we watched
it over and over, it was a little bit emotional.
And so we'll be excited to get him back. He's
dealing with the best doctors and performance team in the
country and so we're expecting him back sooner rather than later.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
He was able to get back out onto the bench
for the end of the game too.
Speaker 16 (07:50):
Yep, yes he was. And then Jackie also he also
delivered his first ever pregame speech. Oh really, it was
for sure.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
The most memorable pregame speech that we have ever had,
not just Terry Kentucky, that I've ever had in my
tenure as a head coach. And and hopefully, if all
things are good and right in the world, the words
that he uttered will never be repeated again.
Speaker 16 (08:15):
But it was.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
It was effective and great and it was vintage Kerk
chrisa and and so now it sounds like we're gonna
have him is the full time.
Speaker 16 (08:23):
Pregame speech guy, at least while he's recovering from this injury.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Well that could be interesting.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
Yep, we need to Yeah, I mean, I'm telling you
we could. We could charge a mission for these things.
They're they're they're vintage, they're beautiful.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
And then Jackson Robinson has to slide over and play
point with Lamont being unavailable last eight minutes of the
game and the overtime, no turnovers, five assists, made shots,
big shots, and uh, you told a funny story in
your postgame press conference about the last time he had
to play point guard, and it was last season. I
(08:59):
think out at BYU.
Speaker 16 (09:00):
Yeah, it's I'll never get that either. You know, you
just have these little moments.
Speaker 6 (09:05):
So Jack's, you know, we we were dealing with some
health issues at b YU and and so Jack's, you know,
we had to kind of force him into a role also,
you know, playing on the wing, but also playing some
some backup point guard and and uh, and you know,
(09:25):
the game had got frustrating, and and we were in
a tough spot and we actually had made a mistake.
We're sprinting back in transition defense and Jacks runs right
in front of the bench literally as he's running back
in trends these transit defense and he screamed, He's like.
Speaker 16 (09:40):
I'm never playing point guard again.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
As he's running back, and it was a you know,
it was a funny and and in the moment it
wasn't funny.
Speaker 16 (09:50):
It was brutal.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
But but you know, listen, it's it's so incredible to
get to watch these these young men grow.
Speaker 16 (09:57):
It just is incredible.
Speaker 6 (09:59):
And you you and you get to take these little
before and after snap shots and you know there was
so much more to him.
Speaker 16 (10:06):
Last season, he had.
Speaker 6 (10:07):
An incredible season, Big twelve six man of a year, right,
and he had an incredible season. But you take that
little snapshot and you compare it to last night, when
you know he was called into full time service as
a point guard and the guts of a game in
a massive stage, two top ten teams duking it out,
and he was beyond flawless. He wasn't just flawless, he
(10:28):
wasn't just a game manager. He was a play maker
in an epic way. And he was absolutely tremendous and
super proud of him. And like I said, it's incredible
to watch these guys grow. It's incredible to see them
become something that they didn't know that they could become
and do things that they didn't know they could do,
and we all get to bear witness to it's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (10:47):

The end game day to day baker Cameron Mills for
the Jack Burford Chevrolet Countdown the tip off coverage of
Colgate and Kentucky Wednesday night. They'll get started at six
(14:21):
thirty Eastern. It's at eight o'clock tips, a little later
than most of the home games have been. It's actually
earlier than the two games last week. I guess. The
one in Seattle started at seven. It was just ten
o'clock Eastern time.
Speaker 16 (14:32):
And it's you said it felt like it was late.
I guess, And as you.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Said, you're right your post game too. Some people went
to sleep at halftime and got a surprise.
Speaker 16 (14:41):
The worst, isn't it?
Speaker 6 (14:42):
I mean you think as you got so musage the
one saving Grace, it was on it was a Saturday there, right,
but you're still thinking, Man, I got church in the morning. Really,
what am I gonna do? Yep, it's a tough one.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Uh well, fortunately your guys were wide awake. Uh what
was it like in the locker room at halftime? What
happens in that situation?
Speaker 16 (15:03):
Well, we're really blessed.
Speaker 6 (15:04):
We have unbelievable we have unbelievable players and leaders that
are that are figuring each other out and figuring out
how to lead, and so they cover most of the
stuff before we even get in there.
Speaker 16 (15:12):
And and what's really fun with our.
Speaker 6 (15:14):
Team, and we do the same thing in timeouts, is
when we have time, we'll actually have our guys debrief us.
Speaker 16 (15:21):
First. What I found is that a lot of times
as coaches, we just want to talk.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
And when you talk, you don't actually have any idea
what you guys are digesting in the moment or not,
and you're not getting any feedback from what they're feeling
and seeing on the court, which is some of the
most valuable data you can possibly get. Is it's not
a matter of if the guys are seeing it right
or not on the court, we're feeling it right or not.
It's a matter of like knowing what they think they're experiencing.
(15:48):
That's the only way you can actually coach a player, right,
and so we do that a lot. And halftime is
is our guys are great.
Speaker 16 (15:54):
They know the drill.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
They come in out of halftime, they got a second
to breathe, and then they have conversations among them themselves
and then all get in there.
Speaker 16 (16:01):
And usually be like, all right, guys, you go first,
what do you have? And the guys will kind of
give me a lone of list of things, and most
of the time it's like, Yep, that's exactly what we have.
Let's go here.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
You know, we're gonna go ABC and D and we're
out and the guys do most of the work and
that's in my experience, that's where really, really, really great
successful ownership teams come from.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
I think I heard this right when you were talking
to the TV guys there shoot around on Saturday. If
I remember the phrase correctly, you talked about we coach
the player, not the players.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
Yeah, it's really I think that's so key. And yeah,
I mean you can't always do that. You have to
coach your team also, but as much as we can,
we like to. And you can say the same thing
with coaching a team not teams. Right, we're coaching our
team in that moment, and we needn't know what our
team is experiencing, what are they feeling, what are they seeing, like,
(16:49):
how are they digesting this experience? And then we can
we can actually manicure it and cultivate it much more
effectively once we know how they are actually experiencing what's happening.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Well, let's get to some questions. We'll start with one
on the social media a UK sports network. This is
from Rich cit He keeps hearing discussion about Kentucky needs
a bucket getter, and Rich says, I think there's the
team in the system can get a bucket based on
strategy and it doesn't have to be a quote unquote
go to guy. What's your take on that back and forth?
Speaker 16 (17:26):
Well, I think that that is. I mean, it's an
interesting concept for sure.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
There are times in a game when it would when
you feel like, hey, I'd like to put the ball
in player A, B or C's hands in this space
and just let them go to work. We actually have
some some really good candidates for that. We have some
guys that we really trust putting in actions, you know,
we we and so so I think we have guys
(17:53):
that are I mean, we have really special players, and
I think we have everything we need to kind of
get to where we need to go, and there is
definitely a place for that. Let's share a funny experience.
It's gonna get me in a little bit of trouble.
But I was coaching. It was my first year coaching
at BYU as the head coach, and we had a
road game at Houston, which is one of the top.
Speaker 16 (18:13):
Programs in the country. Kelvin Sampson does an unbelievable job.
I mean he is.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
If he's not the best coach, I mean, it seems
like we're dealing with all the best coach. I mean,
we just played Few, and coach Few is certainly, you know,
at the very top Echelona College basketball coach, and certainly
so is Kelvin Sampson. And so we had a we
had I think it was six seconds left. We're down one,
and no, maybe it was twelve or thirteen seconds left.
(18:41):
We're down one. We have a time out.
Speaker 16 (18:43):
The balls going full court.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
So I dropped this brilliant intricate like guaranteed winning full
court play, and I put it in you know, we
had some action and put it in players hands. It
was gonna come up ball screen, and he got stripped,
like stripped clean. And so they're racing down the other end,
(19:06):
and inexplicably, the player who stole it takes three steps
in travels as he's shooting a wide open lamp right.
So we get the ball again. Now there's six seconds left,
and so the guy's coming on to the sideline. All
we have is a thirty second time out, and I'm like, man,
I just put my best stuff up up there. So
I turned to a terrific point guard, really just a tough,
(19:26):
tough kid senior. It had been through the wars and
and the brilliant play I came up, was all right,
pass the ball to TJ. TJ dribbled down the court
as fast as you can and score it. That was
That was That was the play, guys. That was the
brilliance of the play that came out of my mouth.
And sure enough TJ. Hawes raced down the floor, did
(19:49):
a little step back at the elbow, shot a shot.
It bounced off the front of the rim about six
feet in the air and then kind of found its
way down the hoop after the buzzer sounded. And so
sometimes it's really nice to have a guy that you
can turn to and say, hey, man, you know what,
in this situation, I don't have a lot for you.
Just go save us and and it's pretty fun. And
(20:12):
so we have a bunch of guys on our team
that are capable of doing that. You saw us use
a couple of those guys down the stretch late in
our most recent game, and it's we're really blessed to
have some veteran guys and go make plays and go
get buckets.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
And the play you had designed at the end of
regulation to try to win it. Uh, that was a
great defensive play by E.
Speaker 6 (20:31):
K Yeah, you can kind of mess it up. It
developed exactly like we thought it would, and he just
made a great play in the air and then it
comes back to yeah, Breya, and I'm thinking, oh, this
is the last second basket. This is going in yep,
if there's any if there's any player, we want to
have the ball in that spot shooting that shot. And
if there's any player, Gonzaga does not want to have
(20:53):
the ball in that spot shooting the shot. At Kobe
Bray and the game this is that way, and Kobe
was just like, yeah, I can finish this right now,
but I think BBN wants five more minutes.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Well, they enjoyed how it turned out. We're gonna get
to a break. We'll come right back and continue. Watch
BBN Tonight, presented by UK Healthcare, every weeknight at seven
thirty on WLX here at Lexington and Its. Can also

Coach Pope?
Speaker 23 (23:58):
David, Hey, welcome guys, good eight.
Speaker 24 (24:00):
I want to congratulating, first of all on a big
win this past weekend. But I was just curious, with
all the players coming from all over the every part
of the country, with all the terminology used at practice,
seems like we need a Ledger or dictionary to be
able to figure out where we're at. I'm only in
game nine, but I'm getting there.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
But clothing, Hey, David, you know, that's actually something we've
talked about. It's it's a you know, it's it's interesting
because every every every new program, every program has our
own kind of terminology for the same things. And so
we've talked about doing that on the show a little bit,
maybe taking one or two words a week. Uh, but
but it is a really important part of the game.
(24:43):
And and you know, Coach Fox actually taught me this
when I was working for him.
Speaker 16 (24:49):
Is you try.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
You're not always successful, but you try and take complicated
concepts and just get him down to one word. And
if it could be a one word syllable, it's even better.
And so, uh, you spent a lot of time throwing
out random words. But I appreciate your question. And our
guys are doing a great job picking up our terminology
and learning it. I'm really proud of our guys are
actually really enjoying spending time together and and uh, it's
(25:12):
an important part of it.
Speaker 16 (25:13):
And and uh, well, I'm gonna I'm gonna have I'm
gonna have the whole radio crew put together a big
glossary and they can send it out.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
There we go. We'll do that. Here's one We had
this on my list last week. We didn't get to it.
Pop Rule.
Speaker 16 (25:26):
That's one. Pop Rule.
Speaker 6 (25:27):
So pop Rule is courtesy the great Greg Popovich, one
of the greatest coaches ever to walk on the face
of the planet Earth. And and he has a rule
on his team where you have to execute on a
decision within point five seconds of the of the ball
of leather touching your hand.
Speaker 16 (25:46):
And it's really really important.
Speaker 6 (25:48):
Every time the ball stops in a player's hands, it
allows the defense time to adjust to get through their
rotations and and so pod you know, that was a
concept that Pop really made public several maybe decades ago, right,
But it's really inherent to what we do, and it's
all about actively thinking ahead in the game. There's sometimes
(26:13):
where you'll see guys catch the ball and then turn
and then try and make a decision. But we want
guys that are actively considering what's going on ahead of
the game and anticipating their next move all the time.
Speaker 16 (26:25):
It makes us way faster than they really are.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
So we talk about the pop roll all the time
on our team, and pop roll in a very general sense,
means that if the ball is being turned to me,
I'm really thinking about a stampede or a maghetti or
a shot.
Speaker 16 (26:39):
Like I need to make.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
I need to execute one of those things I guess,
or an extra pass. I need to have one of
those four things that I'm ready to execute on by
the time the ball touches my hands to actually execute,
not to make a read, but to execute a read.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
All right, David, thank you. We'll get more of those
worked in over the coming weeks and if there's one
that you hear that you want to know more about,
hit us up with a question on X or give
us a call. Let's go back to the phones. Judy
and Mount Sterling. What do you have for coach Pope?
Hey Judy, Judy, Okay, we'll move on. Call us back,
(27:15):
Judy Madison, what do you have?
Speaker 25 (27:18):
You know? I got two things Tom. You know about that?
Uh my Hope, I remember you. You're a national title
team ninety six. I was six years old, so I
remember that.
Speaker 16 (27:30):
Well, thanks, those times I got those were I.
Speaker 25 (27:35):
Got two things for you. One, uh, would you consider
Gonziga your biggest one of your best wins in your
coaching career since considering they were like ranked in the
top ten. And another thing is what was your since
we're playing Louisville this weekend, what was your favorite moment
in the uk UFL rivalry when you played with Rick?
Speaker 6 (27:58):
Okay, great question, So, uh oh, you're gonna really test
me on bit on best wins. We've been really blessed
uh to to to to enjoy some some great wins.
Speaker 25 (28:11):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (28:11):
But certainly you know, anytime you can go compete with
uh one of our few teams, it's it's pretty special.
And and clearly this is a a not just a
great gun Zaga team, but a really really veteran gun
Zagat team, And you know, it's very much it's probably yeah,
I don't know what the split was, but an eighty
twenty split very much a road game with a raucous crowd.
(28:35):
So it was it was a it was a really
really fun night. And then I think the way that
the way that the game went down was really special.
It's always fun when you have a game where things
aren't going exactly right and then your guys raise up
and fix it, so that that makes it doubly special.
So it's certainly a win that we'll enjoy and and
and hopefully not the last of of many and but
(28:55):
but but yes, it's definitely a special game for us.
And then with the Louisville rivalry, so it's interesting. I
don't remember a lot about the games. I just remember
being in RUP and just feeling the energy and the gym.
You know, we had great matchups. We were you know
when Samaki Walker was roaming around and the Cardinal Red
(29:19):
and and and really really fun games just with a
ton of energy.
Speaker 16 (29:25):
But pretty much I've tried to black out.
Speaker 6 (29:30):
All of the things that we endured with Coach p
and I'm saying that in the most lovely way possible.
Speaker 16 (29:35):
Please understand that.
Speaker 2 (29:37):

BBN Game Day, Welcome back into the UK Healthcare Mark
Pope Show. Is the Cats get set to take on
Colgate Wednesday night, eight Eastern on ESPN two UK radio
(33:25):
network coverage. We'll start at six point thirty with the
countdown to tip off show. We have a question here
from the studio on this audience. Go ahead, give us
your name and your question for Chris.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
My name is President Turner. I'm from Bredtha, Canny. I
got a question. How are you going to prepare your
tame for arrival a game like Louisville?
Speaker 16 (33:42):
Yeah, good question. We love these games, they're really special.
Speaker 22 (33:48):
You know.
Speaker 6 (33:48):
One of the things that we do is we we
try and prepare the exact same for every single game.
And so for us, you know, one of the things
that our guys are already repeating today is that on
Wednesday night, we're going to play the toughest game that
we've played all season long against Colgate, and we work
really hard to treat it that way, to prepare that way.
Speaker 16 (34:11):
We understand. You know, if you if you've.
Speaker 6 (34:13):
Watched the college landscape long enough, you know that any
team can beat any other team on any given night,
and we understand that this Coldgate team is going to
come in here starving and hungry and and and have
a chance to do something really special for themselves, to
compete and and so we'll go through that game, and
then we play Louisville on Saturday, and we're gonna prepare
(34:35):
for that game understanding that's going to be the hardest
game we've played all season long, and we stay really
consistent with that. That's really important to us. Hopefully we
prepare for every game where we're really pushing the needle
as hard as we can to play great.
Speaker 16 (34:51):
So that is what we do.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
We just prepared the same way for every game. I
know that's so boring and so cliche, but it also
is winning Cliches. I think a lot of times are
cliches because they actually are true as what we're trying
to do. How my question for you is, how are
you going to prepare different for Louisville then you're prepared
for Colgate.
Speaker 1 (35:08):
Oh I'm gonna put on them lucky sock, all that
hand on.
Speaker 16 (35:13):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Well.
Speaker 16 (35:14):
Pray thank you for following us, man, Thanks thanks for
chearing for the Cats.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Baby, Yes, sir, thank you Preston. Our alumni Hall Fan
Question of the Week comes from Will kind of along
the same theme. He wants to know how much do
your guys know about the rivalry with Louisville. I think
my guys have a sense. I think they have a
sense of it for sure. You know, with the exception
of TP and Trent, none of them were raised, you know,
(35:42):
kind of with with living through this Kentucky Louisville vibe.
So in that sense, it's new to them.
Speaker 6 (35:49):
But my guys will be ready. Man, they are are guys.
They care so much and they love prepping.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
And will we appreciate that you get a twenty five
dollars Alumni Haull get card. You could win one to
submit your question each week to at UK Sports Network,
and if we picked your question to be the Alumni
Hall Question of the Week, you'll win the gift card.
Speaker 16 (36:07):
I've told you it was Will right.
Speaker 6 (36:09):
I don't know if I lost you, but I'll tell
you a quick story where I got to understand Kentucky
Louisville rivalry.
Speaker 16 (36:14):
It was from coach Patino. I may have told this
story on the radio before about the great Bill Kitelee.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Have I told you this story and it didn't bring
a bill yet.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
So Coach Patino has shared this story many times, and
he shared it with me actually as he was recruiting me,
just talking about what Kentucky was.
Speaker 16 (36:30):
But the great Bill Kitelee, one of won the best ever.
Speaker 25 (36:37):
Was.
Speaker 6 (36:38):
You know, he welcomed Coach Patino here and was kind
of one of Coach PE's trusted allies from day one
when Coach Patino first got here to Kentucky. And I
don't know what they were five or six or seven
games into the season, and they had a routine where
when coach sent the players out of the locker room
the last time before the game, Bill kite would walk
in and make sure that coach had everything he needed
(36:59):
and they would walk out on the floor together. And
so this game five, six, seven, eight, somewhere early in
the season, and Coach p sends the team out and
he's like, there's no Bill Kitley. Where is Bill Kiteley?
And so coach is walking around the locker He's like, man,
we gotta go. He looks out in the hall. He
finally goes back in the showers sees the great mister
(37:20):
Wildcat Bill just sitting on the floor. He's dressed in
his suit He's sitting on the floor, tears streaming out
his face, with an open bottle of bourbon in his arms,
just feeling the stress and the pressure of this Kentucky
Louisville game. And that's when Coach Patina was like, Okay,
this is different, like this just means more. And I
(37:43):
wasn't there for that, but here and coach talk about
it and then getting to know and love mister Kyley
so much. I can totally picture it and it's one
of the one of the ways that I appreciate this rivalry.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Well, that segues us into a question from Taylor at
UK Sports Network asking both of us to talk about
favorite Bill Kylee memories. Is there anyone that stands out
for you? Well, I mean I've.
Speaker 16 (38:07):
Talked my favorite Bill Kylee's story of all time with
Frank Vogel. We've talked about that before.
Speaker 6 (38:12):
Right, Yeah, from the NBA coach with the manager here
and so on a personal level, mister Kittie was really
good to me.
Speaker 16 (38:22):
He was great to me.
Speaker 6 (38:23):
Mister kitty would give you the shirt off the back,
but he was not giving you a new pairasos.
Speaker 16 (38:27):
He was not doing that ever.
Speaker 6 (38:30):
But his his uh as you got to know him better,
his his equipment room became a little bit of a refuge.
It became a kind of a place where you could
go hide for just a second and take a breath.
And he was he was, He was a dear friend.
Speaker 16 (38:42):
For me.
Speaker 2 (38:42):
It was going to do pregame interviews with the coach.
And when I started, I was working with Tubby and
we would do the pregame interview for the radio at
the pregame meal, which was roughly about five hours or
four hours before tip off, and I would always make
sure to get there early and want to be late
(39:03):
in case he showed up early, wanted to do tape
it early, whatever. And usually the first guy I'd see
a lot of times, the only guy there was mister Wildcat,
and he always talked to wanted to talk about two things.
We would talk about Kentucky High school basketball or the Reds.
And that was without fault. And I missed those talks
a lot, you know.
Speaker 16 (39:22):
What I think about it.
Speaker 6 (39:24):
You know, mister Cayley would have loved every single year's
iteration of Kentucky basketball ever since he's passed. He would
be having a lot of fun right now. Oh my god,
he would be. In fact, you know, he's somewhere in
having right now, having to having a whole heck of
a lot of fun right now.
Speaker 16 (39:39):
It's pretty great, indeed he is.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Let's go to a break and we'll come back and

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Go Cats, It's the UK Healthcare Mark Pope Show, and
we're taking your questions about Kentucky basketball till the top
of the hour. Cats ranked number five in the new
AP pole that came out. There are five five SEC
(42:17):
teams ranked in the top ten of the AP pole
and nine ranked in the top twenty five, and also
five SEC teams in the top ten of the NCAA's
net rankings. In Kentucky is fifth in there as well.
And Missouri didn't win a game in the league last year,
beat the number one Kansas team yesterday.
Speaker 6 (42:35):
Yeah, it's just it is, it's absolutely it's insanity. So
there's only three teams in the entire SEC sixteen team
league that are not receiving votes for the top twenty five.
I mean, it just is it's awesome. This league is
just as lost as mind. I mean, to have five
teams in the top nine in the AP, it's just
(42:56):
it's just it's brilliant, right, and it's going to be. Uh,
this is going to be a beautiful, beautiful year to
just go compete every single night is going to be
an all out war.
Speaker 16 (43:07):
And and it's what you want.
Speaker 6 (43:08):
It's it's what you want as a competitor, it's what
you want as a coach, and what you want as
a fan base.
Speaker 16 (43:12):
And we're about to go on a ride. Guys. Let's go.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
How's Lamont Butler bouncing back?
Speaker 16 (43:17):
He's doing great. Uh, he's he's dying to get back
on the floor.
Speaker 7 (43:20):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (43:21):
You know, still was not in anything in practice today,
but we're hoping he's back soon. Let's go to the
closet because we're running out of point guard right now, so.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
I could be back soon. Along those lines, Travis, Now,
in practice, I would think this is a great opportunity
for him coming up because when you scrimmage or when
you do offense at either end of the court, but
especially when you're scrimmage. He's good against Lamont every.
Speaker 6 (43:46):
Day yep, tv T Well, yeah, I mean or you
know right now, it's it's you know, the candidates are
him and Jackson Colin.
Speaker 16 (43:55):
Kind of help us, you know, man this point guard.
Speaker 6 (43:57):
Position for a while until we get uh, until we
get you know, Lamont and kurback. So, but we have
we have terrific players, and we a lot of a
lot of guys, a lot of ways to take pressure
off of a point guard.
Speaker 16 (44:07):
So it's gonna be a fun It's gonna be fun
and dramatic. Let's go.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Let's go to the Clark's bubb and Shop phone line. Jared,
what's your question for coach po Jared? You're there, all right,
call us back. We have lines open. You can post
on x at UK Sports Network or on the Facebook
page for Kentucky Basketball. Here's one from Matt at UK
Sports Network. How has your religious faith shaped your growth
(44:31):
as a coach?
Speaker 16 (44:32):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Good question. So actually, my faith is is integral. Is
an integral part of coaching. You know, it's a it
is it kind of is. Is is a massive part
of my entire outlook on life. It fits perfectly with
with with what we're trying to do in athletics and
(44:55):
and at the end of the day, you know, I'm
in love with this torn Well song.
Speaker 16 (45:00):
Uh, you know, I'm listen.
Speaker 6 (45:01):
I'm I'm a I'm a die hard believer, and uh,
I just I have a deep seated faith that at
the end of the day that you know, through our
relationship with with the Savior of.
Speaker 16 (45:12):
Jesus Christ, that that things are gonna work out.
Speaker 6 (45:14):
Okay, this is torn Well song that I love so much,
and it just kind of repeats the course over and over,
but it's it's a if it's not good, then.
Speaker 16 (45:23):
He's not done. No, he's not done with it yet.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
And that is just the truth.
Speaker 16 (45:26):
It's just the truth, man.
Speaker 6 (45:28):
So when you're going through tough times, uh, it's just
tough times for now, because clearly he's not done meaning
meaning Heavenly Father and Savior there, he's not done with
with the project right now. And we're going through some
growth because we're getting to something. And then the the
tagline of the song is there will be joy in
the morning, and and that's really true. And we see
(45:49):
ourselves go through that process every single day. Uh, as
a pope family, when we go through tough times and
tough changes and big challenges and frustrating moments, and we
certainly see it on our team. Pete Carroll, you know,
said it also a great way. He just is just
like Pete Carroll's like the great coach for the Seattle Seahawks,
was at USC won a championship there but and has
(46:11):
won a Super Bowl. But he just has this innate
feeling like there is something great right around the corner,
and that is embedded in my soul because of my faith.
And it makes life pretty easy because when you're going
through the tough times, which in sports man we go
through a lot of tough times.
Speaker 16 (46:26):
When you're going through the tough times, you know that.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
It's not the end.
Speaker 16 (46:30):
That is just building to something incredible. And when you
get's it's almost like a cheat sheet.
Speaker 6 (46:36):
It's not even fair, right, because it kind of leaves
you undaunted and it leaves you pretty bold.
Speaker 7 (46:42):
And.
Speaker 6 (46:44):
It allows you to have a lot of peace as
you kind of continue to push forward and you don't
get as distracted by the anxiety or stress or worry
because because you know that there's good things around the corner.
You know that you know, for me, in a very
spiritual sense. You know that Jesus is always already already
paid the bill, and and and and there's good things ahead,
(47:04):
and so being able to know that in athletics, in
the chaos and dynamic space that we live in, is incredible.
It's just a competitive advantage. It's it's really not fair,
but it certainly is a gift in my life and
my family's life, and we're grateful for our faith.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
Matt, thank you for the question. Let's go back to
the Clerks pumping shop phone line. Now we have Judy.
What do you have for coach pop Hey.
Speaker 26 (47:27):
Two things. First of all, I want to say sixteen
down and halftime, I never doubted.
Speaker 16 (47:34):
I don't believe you.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
I don't believe you.
Speaker 16 (47:38):
I don't believe you.
Speaker 25 (47:40):
I tell you it's the truth.
Speaker 26 (47:42):
I never doubted.
Speaker 6 (47:44):
Well, if we're being honest, if we're being honest, can
I tell you that I had a couple of doubts.
Speaker 16 (47:48):
I was like, well, I don't know how this is
going to turn out.
Speaker 26 (47:54):
Well, I don't know what, folks, I don't know what
you and your boys did halftime. You did a great
job in the second half. And the second thing is
I usually have a favorite player, and I love all
these guys. I cannot pick out a favorite player. You
all are all all time.
Speaker 6 (48:16):
Judy, First of all, can I tell you thanks for calling,
Like it's really super grateful for you calling. And can
I tell you for thank you for believing in the
boys and for cheering them on. And I'm gonna tell
you this, So our guys are keenly aware of who
they're competing for. And I kid you not, Judy, like
(48:37):
they get it, and they're competing for you, and they're
competing for BBN. And so when you walk in the
locker room down sixteen, and there might be some slight
hant of like, ah, man, this is a hard night.
I don't if things are gonna go well. When you
remember who you're competing for and what you're fighting for,
it makes it really easy. So we're super grateful for you.
These guys are gonna keep fighting all season long for you.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
Thank you. Appreciate the call. You're wearing A How great
is Judy? Fantastic? She would she I'm sure would love
if she. I don't know if she's streaming the show

can get one or.
Speaker 16 (49:29):
That they love it.

to that, but it is popular.

Mark Evans. I just can't say enough. He's got First
of all, he got so many irons in the fire,
(49:55):
so he Actually we're trying to up our game in
terms of recruiting. When the guy come on vases, We're like, man,
we need some more cool swag for our recruits to
wear when we're taking photos. You know, these kids love
the photos. They you know, all the stuff, and so
all of a sudden our next photo shoot, he's got
these ridiculously cool jackets. He had four of them in
(50:16):
all different sizes because we bring in kids in different sizes.
Hopefully they're all the bigger sizes. And and so I
was just like, Mark, what is happening? Like I have
got to get one of those jackets. And so uh,
I would just tell every man just just call Mark Evans,
see what do.
