Happy New Year and thanks for listening to our podcast on African Intellectual Property
Jurisprudence.
Now we shall be continuing today, part two of what we did last time before we went on

the Christmas holidays.
We were talking on the topic African Creative Spaces and Interventionists.
In part two today and the final part of this series, I shall be focusing essentially on

how the interventionists, those who are supporting the creative expressions and the creative
works in the African continent and allied jurisdictions with funds, with technical support.

How they support these interventions can actually get to the real creators, the real expressionists,
those who actually make music, those who actually make movies, those who actually perform creatively.

So today I'm going to focus on the collecting societies in Africa.
By collecting societies, I'm talking about the copyright management organizations.

For example, we have the right, they call them also right management organizations.
I have noticed that there seems to be conflicts in management of these bodies and these collecting

societies are very vital in the economic benefits and also artistic benefits that comes to creators
in Africa.
I mean, we've heard of cases in Nigeria where there has been longstanding dispute between

the musical collecting society of Nigeria and also another group, the copyright society
of Nigeria.
Now, although the Nigerian copyright commission, the regulating body has intervened and has

used their powers under the laws.
The law permits them to actually appoint in Nigeria only one collecting society in the
genre of music.
