(00:00):
Welcome to the Carolina Panthers football in my mind podcast. Thank you, James Taylor

(00:06):
This is episode number one. I'm your host Luke Farber. Why the name?
Well, I'm coming to you from beautiful Tacoma, Washington and
Carolina is always in my mind this time of year. I have lived on the West Coast my entire life
Been dislocated fan my entire life always an enemy territory
So

(00:28):
It's about time that I reach out into the ether and see if I can bring back some some good Panthers fans to start some
Discussions with because I really have never had another Panthers fan to talk good football with I
I get to talk football with my dad, but he's a Niners fan and we don't we don't do that stuff anymore

(00:50):
How did I become a Panthers fan? Well grew up as a Niners fan obviously
And I just didn't feel the connection to them that I had with my beloved San Francisco Giants
That my dad and my older brother had with them
So after they won their last Super Bowl in 1994
I just I knew I needed a new team and it just happened to be the Panthers

(01:14):
Coming in the league and I like the unis and honestly come on
We still got the the best all-whites
In the league you can't you can't tell me anything different
And it's been a love affair ever since
Well, I think we better start with

(01:38):
Preview of this season
I
Named this first episode
24 I named it that for that for a couple of weeks
I named it that for that for a couple reasons because I wanted to honor the late great Willie Mays. I
Was actually away with my father and uncle

(02:03):
Burying my grandmother
when we got the news and
it was sad for a lot of reasons and
It was right around Juneteenth and the
Game at Rick would field to honor the Negro Leagues and finally the Major Leagues let the Negro League stats

(02:26):
commingle with theirs
You know not soon enough I
Think there's there's a lot of
hate flowing around this world right now to people that are different than other people and I
Think we should all realize that we're all the same

(02:48):
Where we come from and how we pursue our life and our loves look different
But it's only because we're from different places. Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox there
The other reason I named this episode 24 is because that is the total number of points the
2023 Carolina Panthers scored in their two victories

(03:12):
last year I
Only mentioned last year because I just want to put it to bed for my sake
You know, I know the team already has and that's great. They should have
But I still have a couple things to say
and
I'm very glad that it's a new year

(03:33):
I'm very glad is 2024 because last year in my opinion was the worst year in
Franchise history and I don't think it was really even that close
I mean the one in 15 year was awful and I remember
Pretty much all of it. It was my senior year in high school and
we had just gotten cable television for the first time in my life and

(03:57):
It happened to be DirecTV and we got a promo of free Sunday ticket
and so I finally got to watch a full season of my
favorite football team and
Well, I didn't get to quite watch the full season because I missed the first game
Of course and then watched 15 losses in a row and

(04:22):
It was gut-wrenching I especially remember the Saints game, you know after Smitty returned that punt for a touchdown and
We thought we were going in for the win and and Ricky Williams had something else to say about it
but
Anyway last year 24 points two wins

(04:44):
It's got to be better. It's got to be better
First of all, let's let's start with the season preview will go position by position
Or position group by position group obviously start at the top quarterback
Bryce going into his second year
Going into his second year

(05:05):
What to say, I mean there's a lot to say there's a lot not to say I think I
Believe in Bryce. I think he's a winner. I think he proved that in college. I think he proved it in high school. I think he's
done an
amazing job
At the programs he's been at he's had a lot of talent around him when when he's had that kind of success. Absolutely

(05:29):
Absolutely
But that is the task of every GM and every coaching staff in the NFL is to surround their best players
with the supporting cast that is going to allow them to succeed and
Last year was just an epic failure
in
Every way. I mean you could tell you know

(05:51):
I didn't read any of those articles that the athletic put out about the disconnect in the building and all that stuff
but you could tell you could tell just from the free agents they signed and
How everything was put together with the offense there was no synergy there was no plan

(06:12):
it seemed and
You know it's funny with all the coaches, you know the the all-star coaching staff and
My thought initially was there just might be too many cooks in the kitchen

(06:32):
Turns out that might have been
Might have been part of what went wrong. I mean everything went wrong. Let's let's be honest about that
So do I blame Bryce no
But do I blame him sometime? Sure
yeah, I just remember after the first game last year when he threw those two picks to Jesse Bates and

(06:54):
Frank Reich stood up there and oh said it wasn't Bryce's fault
Because Jesse Bates broke the rules of the coverage that they were in it's like well Frank
NFL safeties, especially probable ones
Can do that
They can break off their coverage and intercept a ball
So to say that you know, these things weren't Bryce's fault or you know, let's let's be honest

(07:19):
You know, that's one thing that's I like about canal is he seems to be very straightforward
Very honest
You know, we'll see how that goes and it progresses and and you know as we get into the season and and hopefully
He lasts for more than a year

(07:40):
But I like that about canal
as opposed to Frank
and
So Bryce
What's he got to do this year? Obviously got it. Got to have time got to have protection
That was one of the things last year. We gave up the second
most sacks in the league 65 and

(08:02):
He didn't he didn't have time. He didn't have a chance. There was pressure right up the middle and especially for a small
quarterback
quarterback, you know for any quarterback pressure up the middle seems to be even worse than pressure outside and
I also don't think that he was ready
for the speed and tenacity of

(08:24):
NFL defensive lineman, especially he seemed to you know
He was a good playmaker outside of the pocket in college and that was one of the reasons why we took him over CJ Stroud
But he couldn't get away from people last year
It's like he would drift out of the pocket kind of nonchalantly occasionally or look that way

(08:45):
and
All of a sudden he'd be crashed down on by the D lineman and he'd lose the ball and
They might pick it up and score, you know, and and that's one of the things I love about one of the
First press conferences I heard from canalis in the spring is that quarterbacks are athletes first and having them finish

(09:08):
40 yard runs after play, you know
That's essential, you know, I because I think just like Christian McCaffrey was too small when he came into league
Bryce is never gonna be a big guy
But he can fill out a little bit. He can get stronger and get get better support muscles everything
You know

(09:30):
And and he can improve that little bit in those
10th of a second type plays
And I think he will I mean you can already tell he's he's more solid than he was last year
and
You saw it in the third preseason game when he got outside of the pocket to his left and was able to shift his hips

(09:52):
Around and throw the ball downfield to Johnson
That's what we want to see that's that that is what we need to see from Bryce this year
But hopefully as more time
That offensive line is the key 100 percent. Yes. We need a better playmakers. We got some
But with no time it doesn't matter with no running game. It doesn't matter

(10:16):
Football is one in the trenches. We needed to bulk up in both
spots that was the thing when when Matt rule came in he kind of
seemed to
Change the philosophy of the body type, you know that the Panthers look for
We've been at our best football when we're smashmouth when we're big boy

(10:39):
Football, that's what we want to do. We want to run and hit right
offense and defense
So i'm super excited about this game
and defense
So i'm super excited to have a bigger line
Hopefully, you know canals have been preaching the run preaching on the run preaching the run

(10:59):
Well, we've heard that before we want to run the football. We want to pound the rock
We want to keep pounding and chuba
is
Is primed
So
You know, I believe in Bryce and I believe
that
We need to put the things around him so that he can have the best chance to have success and

(11:24):
I believe that we are much better set up for that this season than we were last
We'll see how it works out
But Bryce has the right mental makeup to rebound from last year and
To put a great year out there I believe
And then we'll see how it all comes together lots of new pieces coaching staff players

(11:51):
Office. It's going to take some time
Also wanted to give a shout out to Bryce's mental health
Persona, you know mental health is a big thing
For everybody I believe and it definitely has been for me in my life and no matter how old you are

(12:12):
you're never too old to learn new lessons and my ego isn't big enough to
say that you know I've got a 23 year old role model when it comes to mental
health in Bryce Young and thank you thank you Bryce keep it up all right
let's move on oh line is in my opinion it's it's the next most important spot

(12:37):
other than quarterback and obviously we ought to added the massive guards Robert
Hunt and Damian Lewis from the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks in the
offseason moved Austin Corbett to center we still have Big Ik and Timo at the
tackle spots everybody was bad last year everybody so can we rebound because Big

(13:06):
Ik had a pretty decent rookie year and as a number six overall pick playing
left tackle you expect better things and and Timo has been a solid right tackle
in this league for a long time he seems to play a bit better when he has better
cohorts next to him I mean like everybody would so we're hoping those

(13:28):
two big guards come in and and really solidify that pocket especially Robert
Hunt he only gave up one sack last year for Tua kept him healthy so we're hoping
for the same thing Austin Corbett moves to center which will be you know it'll
be interesting easy he's been a guard of course I love his attitude he's he he's

(13:50):
got a chip and and that's what you want right you know doesn't like to hear from
the media that he that he isn't experienced enough for this or that you
know or that he isn't healthy enough go get it man because I tell you we've been
missing Ryan Khalil in my opinion why our offensive line has gone in the

(14:11):
gone in the dumps in recent years is you know we got spoiled Ryan Khalil
Pro Bowl all-pro center we miss you but you know I thought we might have had a
good opportunity to take Jackson Powers Johnson in the draft this year but I've
learned long ago that people a lot smarter than me get paid to make those

(14:37):
decisions so I'm gonna go with what they what they picked and and and we'll go
from there
anyway outlook on the old line I don't see how they could be worse I don't see
how they couldn't get better and and I tell you what if we can establish a

(14:59):
dominant run game line of scrimmage we're gonna have a chance to pass
protect better and if we have a good offensive line this year if we're able
to rebound in those guards you know everything gets solidified I listened to
the move the six podcast Daniel Jeremiah Bucky Brooks best football

(15:21):
analysis in the game period and one thing that they say and I believe is
that if you got a team with a good offensive line you're probably not gonna
be bad you might not be a great team but you're not gonna be a horrible team so
if we can get that good offensive line up this year I think we got a chance to

(15:47):
win a lot more games than you know everybody ranking us 30 second in the
NFL and I think beefing up the defensive line on the other side which we did in
the offseason is gonna help as well anyway let's move on next to our wide
receivers Adam Thielands a stay holdover had a hundred catches last year great

(16:14):
possession receiver probably doesn't have the long speed anymore but crafty
veteran who's going to be solid chain mover for Bryce bring over Deontay
Johnson all I've heard all offseason is is his separation and his route running
so we'll see how that goes I mean I didn't get a chance to watch him a ton

(16:37):
in Pittsburgh so we'll see I'm excited Xavier LeGette is the next folks people
talk about but I think Mingo might get a whole lot more playing time this year
obviously he had a rough rookie season as well but I really liked certain

(17:00):
things that I heard from him last year and I think in a new situation with a
new coach new scheme new everything he's gonna have a chance to thrive and I
think that he is going to be a bulldozer after the catch I really want to see him
get some slants you know and really get crossers getting running away from the

(17:26):
defense and running through them
Xavier LeGette yeah I would have picked McConkey, Pearsall, who else did I like
Franklin, route runners you know they seem to adjust to the NFL game a little
bit faster and I was thinking you know we need some fast success we do but if

(17:54):
you take a guy like LeGette who's big fast strong physical can high point a
ball catches everything if you got the right plan for him yeah yeah hell yeah
but but I mean that was a thing so many people don't have the right plan I mean
we saw what the wrong plan can look like last year so I'm interested to see what

(18:18):
can Alices plan for LeGette and Mingo and all of them are really obviously the
group is gonna be better than last year I think just like almost every position
group on this team how much better we don't know yet we don't know yet we got
to see it so all right let's move on tight ends

(18:44):
Tremble and Ian Thomas been out all preseason which I I'm a huge Sanders fan
I thought you know I don't watch it all college football games but I thought he
was the second best tight end in college football behind Brock Bowers last year
and the way he's smooth in and out of breaks control in the middle of the

(19:11):
field I can't wait to see him especially because he's gotten all the first-team
reps because of those guys have been injured it's the perfect setup for him
to hit the ground running now will he hit the ground running first game I
don't know but the guy has a feel and all those great tight ends have feels to
where to sit down in zones how to box out defenders he says he wants to be the

(19:36):
next geo I think he's got a real good chance and obviously those other guys
they're solid they're good blockers they can catch the ball we've been waiting
for him to step up for years at this point they may just be who are who they
are which is fine they're great football players and we need them so hurry back

(20:02):
running back running back hey the engine right Chuba I can't wait to see Chuba
hit the line this year he's taken ownership of that position he's got the
burst he's got the power he's got the attitude I love to watch him in an okay
state you know Jonathan Brooks is in the wings but we're probably not gonna see a

(20:25):
ton of him this year we'll see probably more so in the second half of the year
but honestly I think Chuba is going to have established himself as as one of
the league's top ten runners I think I think if he gets the bulk of the carries

(20:45):
this year you could see a twelve thirteen hundred yard year so I can't
wait to see it and seeing a motivated Miles Sanders hearing all the talk of
about how hardcore he's been in camp it's gonna be great for everybody he's
gonna be great for Chuba Raheem Blackshear is a great number three in

(21:05):
special teamer solid solid group defense defensive line Derek Brown obviously
starts with him first defensive tackle to have a hundred tackles in a season
last year you know they talk about his run stuffing ability and how he's not

(21:28):
much of a pass rusher you know I don't see that it depends on what you're asked
to do and how you're asked to do it with a Sean Robinson coming over Adam more
bulk and clowny TJ Johnson looks huge compared to what he did last year

(21:50):
eventually want him and Barnaul come back you know I think having that beef
inside we haven't had a great run defense in a while and we're really
going to need to step up in that area I think a Sean is really gonna help I
think clown he's really gonna help and honestly I mean Burns Burns was a good

(22:15):
run defender and and a great pass rusher but he left you want him for power at
times and honestly I can't believe I mean I think it was a crime to let Hasan
read a cath the building because he was obviously the better of the two of them

(22:37):
few years back and I would love to see us somehow get him from the Jets but you
know I know there's a lot more that goes into that and cap issues and whatnot so
anyway it'll be interesting you know obviously we have no proven commodities
besides clowny at the end position or outside linebacker and it's time for

(23:07):
those young guys to step up and we'll see what happens and and DJ want him yeah
free agent signing probably most experienced most talented who knows it's
still rehab on a knee so we'll see when he gets back how good he is if any of
the guys can step up before he gets back but if the defense is going to be a

(23:31):
defense is going to allow us to win more games somebody is going to have to step
up on that defensive line or it's gonna be half to collective group step up so
we'll see just like another position group I think that's the thing with the

(23:52):
Panthers right now is that this the front lines look pretty solid also you
know their new pieces coming together with all the front lines so that's
that's part of it too but but also the depth is just unproven and you need depth

(24:12):
to be a great team so that is also depending on how quickly the young guys
come through it's gonna depend on how good the defense is and if we can win
those two three more games then we might lose if the defense is it's a sieve

(24:36):
anyway great to have Shaq back Shaq you're my man leader ever since your
message to Seattle fans back after the 2015 division win love you buddy I love
the disdain you have the for the media too anyway glad to have you back you're
the you're the leader you're you're the big dog you know we got to have great

(25:01):
linebacker play in Carolina and you're the man and I'm interested to see how
Josie fits in and Trevin Wallace looks like he's had a good preseason it's
great to to be drafting those those next Panther linebackers you know because
we're at our best when we got great linebacker play you know Sam Mills the

(25:25):
water Lathan Kevin Green Michael Barrow Will Witherspoon Dan Morgan Hannibal
Navy's John Beeson Thomas Davis Luke Keakley James Anderson Shaq Thompson
Frankie Louvoo you know I'm sure I'm missing some but hey linebacker you

(25:47):
let's go and so we'll see how that you know more more more depth questions
there but great frontline corners JC we love you buddy please stay healthy
please stay healthy so yeah that's that's a big that's a big part of it and

(26:15):
that's a big F you know especially since we lost Dane Jackson for a little while
we'll see how these unproven corners step up I like our safety room X has
steadily improved since he's come on to the squad and the two free agents they
brought in have been making some plays in the preseason have been talked about

(26:38):
in camp a lot and hey Domani Richardson young guy to make the squad you know as
a backup safety and special team are looking forward to seeing what he does
electric can't player so special teamers you know Pinheiro is one of the most

(26:58):
accurate kickers heckers a great punter we need better coverage units Sam
Franklin is unfortunately out for a while our special teams ace can't wait
till he comes back glad he got named a captain even though he's he's hurt right
now but coverage units got to have their hair on fire you know we are an

(27:22):
unproven young team new coach new front office we don't have much room for air
we got to play with our hair on fire and I love how canalis seems to be preaching
that so we'll see how that goes canalis new head coach I do like a lot of the

(27:44):
things that I've I've heard from him attention to detail honesty
straightforwardness enthusiasm bring your best bring the best out of your
players I like all this stuff you know we'll see how it translates yeah you
know this is a first thing for him too he's been a play caller before but he's
never been a play caller head coach so we'll see how that all goes can't wait

(28:11):
to see it can't wait to see it man I think I'm running out of steam here well
it's about 15 minutes till kickoff I'm getting this in right under the wire you
know I've been trying to set this whole thing up and get going a man I'm so
excited so excited oh congratulations to pep to pep man you're my favorite

(28:35):
Panther all-time it's not even close it was a privilege and an honor to watch
you be held and double and triple teamed and on every play and still dominate
it was incredible thank you so much I watched your Hall of Fame speech the
other night first class all the way not surprising anyway we are we are coming

(29:04):
back and we're gonna reach that mountaintop and we do we need to keep
pounding because we're gonna get there eventually I can't wait it's football
day anyway predictions predictions for this for the for the game I am

(29:27):
predicting that we are going to lose unfortunately I think I think that the
cards are stacked against us enough we're on the road in New Orleans hard
place to play division opponent great defense I've been waiting for that
defense to age for a while and it hasn't this might be the year I'm not
particularly impressed by Derek Carr but they do have some players on offense

(29:52):
that you got to watch out for Taysom Hill, Kamara, Olavay, Shahid, they're a
tough team and and their old line hasn't been as good in recent years but they've
got some quality players so you know they've got a new offensive coordinator

(30:14):
as well we'll see how that goes but I think just all the newness and
everything coming together the new head coach the the new offensive line like
everything it's just gonna take a little time to get some traction and I I think
it'll probably come down to a few plays and those few plays just may be made by

(30:36):
New Orleans instead of us you know I would say maybe a 26-20 game I really
hope I'm wrong and and I you know I'm kind of tempering down my expectations
today so I can be happier if I'm wrong and not be as devastated if we lose of
course predictions for the season we're definitely not gonna be 32nd I think

(31:04):
like I said it's gonna take a little time to get together but I believe in
the direction that we're heading and I think I'm gonna go with an eight and nine
record obviously gonna miss out the playoffs there I think I think if

(31:25):
everything goes right and we could have a Houston Texans esque year like last
year and we have a vulnerable division because honestly I don't believe in
Captain Kirk either but it would it would take everything going right you

(31:48):
know and I think it would take winning our first game too so so we'll keep our
fingers crossed and and head out there with our head up and keep pounding and
anyway oh yeah we're coming down the end here I guess and my mother made sure to
tell me that I need to shout out Steph Curry so Steph what do you think man

(32:11):
what are we gonna do this year what do you think of Bryce what do you think of
the new coach where are we gonna end up congratulations on the gold medal by the
way buddy and and good luck on the Warriors season coming up keep pounding
