SPEAKER_01 (00:00):
It's divide.
Holy liberty with Christmas.
It's sanctified clarity.
With print on the light andtruth in her head.
She's breaking down the Biblewith laughter and a plant.
It's divine.
(00:21):
Oh, it's divine shenanigans.
SPEAKER_00 (00:28):
Hey y'all, welcome
back to Divine Shenanigans,
where we are learning laughingand loving Jesus, one
emotionally dramaticoverreaction at a time.
And listen, if you have evercried in your car after a
totally normal interaction, overanalyzed a text message like
(00:48):
it was a final exam, or replayedsomething you said from 2014,
this episode's for you.
Because same, deeply same, spiritually same, embarrassingly
same.
I've done it all.
Today we're talking about gracefor the emotionally
(01:09):
overreactive, which is a fancyway of saying, Lord, I love you,
but also I'm a lot.
We're not here to shameourselves.
We're not here to pretend we'rechill when we are not chill.
We are here to learn how Godmeets us in our emotional
intensity, how to stop spiralingquite so dramatically, and how
(01:32):
grace actually applies to reallife, not just Sunday mornings.
So before we get into scripture, let me tell you a story about a
time I absolutely, completelyunnecessarily emotionally
spiraled.
Okay, picture this.
I'm sitting in my car.
(01:52):
I just left a completely normalinteraction.
Like nothing dramatic happened.
But my brain Oh my brain saidLet's ruin your entire day.
I started replaying.
Why did I say that like that?
Did they think I was weird?
Should I have smiled more?
(02:13):
Oh should I have smiled less?
Was my tone too tony?
And then suddenly we arespiraling.
The next thing I know, I'memotionally exhausted.
I've created three fakearguments in my own head.
I've lost peace I had tenminutes ago.
And I'm sitting there like Lord,I love you.
(02:35):
But I am mentally doing Olympicgymnastics right now.
And the wild part?
The other person is probably athome like, wow, that was a
normal conversation.
Meanwhile, I'm like, let'sunpack this for the next six to
eight business days.
And in that moment, I feel Godgently remind me.
(02:56):
You don't have to live likethis.
Not in shame, not incondemnation, but in grace.
And if you've ever had a momentlike that, you are not alone.
In fact, let's talk about somecommunity confessions.
Alright, I asked y'all for somereal life emotional overreactive
(03:18):
moments.
And wow, we are quite thecommunity.
First one I got, I cried becausesomeone said K instead of okay.
Alright, honestly, this isvalid.
Because what does K mean?
Are you mad?
Are you busy?
Are we ending our friendship?
(03:39):
Then we have the second story.
I replay conversations fromyears ago and still cringe.
I do the same exact thing.
There are moments from 2007 thatrandomly show up like hey
Bestie, remember this?
And she answers no, I didn'tneed to.
(03:59):
Then we have story number three.
I assume people are upset withme with zero evidence.
Yeah, zero evidence.
Just vibes which are bad vibes, imaginary vibes.
Listen, we laugh about this, butunderneath it is something real.
(04:19):
It's fear, insecurity, desire tobe loved and accepted.
And God, he sees all of it.
So let's ground this inscripture because the Bible
actually has a lot to say aboutour minds, our emotions, and our
tendencies to spiral.
Alright, let's take a deepbreath for this one.
(04:43):
Because this is where we stopletting our feelings lead the
whole show, and we let truthcome back into the room.
Not to shut our emotions down, but to steady them.
Philippians four, six and sevenDo not be anxious about
anything, but in everysituation, by prayer and
(05:04):
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Now let's just be honest rightaway on this one.
This verse can feel a littleoffensive when you're mid
spiral.
Like don't be anxious aboutanything.
Sir, respectfully, have you seenmy brain at two AM?
(05:24):
Because anxiety doesn't politelyknock and say, Hi, I'd like to
visit for a moment.
No.
It kicks the door down and sayslet's ruin everything you've
ever felt peace about.
But here's what Paul is actuallysaying.
He's not saying never feelanxious.
He's saying don't stay therewithout bringing it to God.
(05:49):
Then we have by prayer andpetition, which means talk to
God honestly, not polished, notfiltered, and not in your church
voice, your real voice.
Something like this.
God, I think I messed that up.
God, I feel like they're mad atme.
(06:10):
God, I can't stop thinking aboutthis.
And y'all know what?
God is not in heaven going, wow, this is the third time today
she's brought this up.
He's like, I know, I was therethe first two times.
Let's walk through it again.
Anxiety grows in isolation.
(06:30):
Peace grows in surrender.
And the peace of God will guardyour hearts and your minds.
Not remove your situation, noterase your personality, but
guard you like a security systemfor your thoughts.
Because some thoughts theyshould not have access to your
(06:51):
peace.
Second Corinthians ten, five.
We take captive every thought tomake it obedient to Christ.
Okay.
This one?
This one is for theoverthinkers.
Because your brain will saythings like, They definitely
think you're weird.
You said too much.
(07:12):
You should have handled thatdifferently.
This is going to ruineverything.
And none of those thoughts askedpermission, checked facts, or
consulted Jesus.
We don't just believe everythingwe think.
We interrogate it.
Hold on, is this true?
Do I have proof or am I creatinga full documentary in my head?
(07:37):
Some of us are out hereproducing entire Netflix
specials based on zero evidence.
The phrase take captiveliterally means grab the
thought.
Don't let it run wild.
Bring it under truth.
So your thought, they're mad atme.
(07:57):
Response Do I know that?
Or am I assuming that?
Your thoughts are not alwaysfacts.
Sometimes they're fears, insecurities, old wounds, or
just really bad guesses.
And God is inviting you to stopletting every thought have
authority.
(08:18):
Psalm one hundred thirty nine, twenty three and twenty four.
Search me, God, and know myheart.
Test me and know my anxiousthoughts.
This one is powerful because itflips the direction.
Instead of spiraling inward, overanalyzing everything, and
(08:38):
trying to solve it yourself, yousay God, you search me.
Because let's be honest, when wespiral, we don't actually find
clarity.
We just find more questions, more fear, more overthinking.
But God, God sees the root, thetruth, and he sees what actually
(09:00):
matters.
So if you're feeling anxious, say God, I feel anxious.
I don't even fully know why.
Can you show me what's realhere?
Because sometimes the issueisn't the situation, it's fear
of rejection, fear of beingmisunderstood, fear of not being
(09:21):
enough.
And God doesn't shame that.
He reveals it so he can heal it.
Okay, let's talk about Elijahbecause this man is the poster
child for emotional whiplash.
Elijah had just experienced aliteral miracle, fire from
(09:42):
heaven, victory over falseprophets, and then immediately
after, he runs into thewilderness and says I want to
die.
Well that escalated quickly.
But also have you ever had areally good day?
Felt spiritually strong, andthen suddenly crashed
(10:04):
emotionally.
Like God is amazing followed byeverything is terrible.
Well that's Elijah.
Here's the important part.
God doesn't say Elijah, wow, that's dramatic.
He doesn't say pull yourselftogether.
He says eat something, rest, andI'm still here.
(10:28):
Now let that sink in.
Sometimes your spiritualstruggle is also physical and
emotional.
Again, some of y'all don't needa breakthrough, you just need a
sandwich and a nap.
God met Elijah in exhaustion, infear, in emotional overwhelm.
And he meets you there too.
(10:51):
Now let's talk about Martha, because Martha is the queen of
overwhelmed, overthinking anddoing the most.
Jesus is in her house.
Mary's sitting calmly at hisfeet, Martha.
She's running around stressed, and she finally snaps.
Lord, don't you care?
(11:12):
Well, that's honest, that'sreal, and that's us sometimes.
Jesus responded, Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about
many things.
Now notice this, he didn't shameher.
He named what was happening.
He said, You're overwhelmed,you're distracted, you're caring
(11:34):
too much.
Now Martha wasn't wrong forcaring.
She was overwhelmed by too manythoughts, too many
responsibilities, and too muchinternal pressure.
Does that sound familiar?
Well, Jesus redirected her, notwith criticism, but with
invitation.
(11:55):
Being overwhelmed doesn't meanyou're failing or you're weak.
It means you need to come backto what matters most.
So what do we see in all ofthis?
God doesn't expect you to beemotionless.
He invites you to bring youremotions to him.
Your thoughts are not alwaystruth.
(12:18):
You have authority over what youbelieve.
Overwhelm happens, but you don'thave to stay there.
Grace isn't just for your calm, put together moments.
It's for the spirals, theoverthinking, the why did I say
that moments?
I want you to know you are nottoo much for God.
(12:42):
Even on your most emotionallydramatic day, he is not
overwhelmed by you.
Alright, friends, so now that wehave grounded ourselves in
truth, let's talk about whatthis actually looks like in real
life.
Because scripture it ispowerful.
But we need something for thecar crying, the late night
(13:04):
spirals, the overthinking aftercompletely normal conversations.
So let's get practical.
Okay, I'm spiraling.
The first thing we need to do isname the spiral.
Okay, I'm spiraling.
Not this is truth.
Second, pause the narrative.
(13:25):
Ask what do I actually know?
And what am I assuming?
Three, bring it to Godimmediately.
Not after forty five minutes ofoverthinking.
Immediately.
four, journal it out.
Get it out of your head becauseyour brain exaggerates,
(13:46):
dramatizes, and also addsbackground music.
Journaling is so important forus to work through everyday
things.
Five, speak truth over yourself.
God is not disappointed in me.
I am safe.
I don't need to solve everythingtonight.
Six, regulate your body.
(14:07):
Sometimes you don't need asermon, you need water, food,
rest, and a deep breath.
Elijah literally needed a snack.
So some of y'all don't needdeliverance.
You need lunch.
Alright y'all, it's time forholy homework.
First thing I want you to do.
(14:27):
Catch the spiral early.
When it starts, I want you tosay it out loud.
I am spiraling.
Write down the thought and thenask, is it true?
Is this helpful?
Replace it with the truth.
Example, you're thinking theyhate me.
The truth?
(14:48):
I don't actually know that.
Then pray a thirty secondprayer.
God, I give you this thought.
Help me see clearly and give mepeace right now.
Do one grounding action.
Drink some water, step outside,breathe.
We are not trying to becomeemotionless.
(15:10):
We are learning to feel withoutspiraling, process without
panicking, and trust God in themiddle of it.
And honestly, this is exactlywhat this week's song is about.
Before we wrap up, I want toshare this week's song of the
week, and honestly, this onefeels very personal.
(15:30):
The song of the week is Gracefor real life.
And I had this moment with Godwhere I felt him gently say,
Grace isn't just for your bestbehavior.
It's for your real life.
So I grabbed my notebook and Ididn't try to write something
impressive.
I just wrote something honest.
(15:52):
And the first line that came outwas basically not just Sunday
morning light.
Because Sunday is easy, right?
Sunday is worship music, coffee, calm, inspirational versions of
ourselves.
But Monday?
Monday is email emotionsoverthinking.
(16:13):
Why did I say that in thatmeeting?
And I felt like God was saying,I didn't just show up for
Sunday.
I'm in your Monday too.
So the hook became not justSunday morning light, but grace
for real life.
Because that's what we actuallyneed.
Not perfect performance, perfectemotions, perfect responses.
(16:39):
We need grace for the messymiddle, the emotional reactions,
the overthinking nights.
And I'll be real with you, thissong wasn't written from a place
of I have mastered this.
It was written from a placewhere I am actively living this,
like mid-spiral, but stillchoosing grace.
(17:02):
This was not a mountaintoprevelation song.
This was a sitting in my carquestioning everything song.
So when you hear it, I want youto remember God's grace is not
fragile.
It doesn't disappear when youfeel too much.
It doesn't run out when youoverthink.
(17:22):
It meets you right there in thecar, right there in the spiral,
right there in the I wish Ihandled that differently moment.
So as this song plays, I don'twant you to just listen to it.
I want you to receive it.
If you've been hard on yourself, replaying things, feeling like
(17:44):
you should be farther along, letthis be your reminder.
You are still covered by graceright now, as you are.
The full version of the songwill play at the end of this
episode.
And you can also find the lyricvideo on my YouTube channel,
Brittany Lee's Worship in Words.
That's where all my music islocated.
(18:06):
So hop over to YouTube and checkme out there.
Alright, let's take everythingthat we have talked about today
and bring it into a moment ofprayer together.
Let's pray.
God, thank you that you are notoverwhelmed by us, even when we
are overwhelmed by ourselves.
(18:28):
Thank you that you see ourthoughts, our emotions, our
spirals, and you meet us withgrace.
Help us slow down, recognizewhat's true, and bring
everything to you first.
Remind us that we are safe inyou, even when our minds are
(18:50):
loud, and teach us to live inyour peace right in the middle
of real life.
We love you.
Amen.

SPEAKER_02 (20:23):
Already behind what
I thought I had planned.
Sid I be patient, did I be kind?
But I lost my cool before nine.
I whisper a prayer between redlights.
God help me get through thisday, alright.
It's not polis, it's barely astart, but you still hear my
(20:44):
heart.
You don't wait for me to getright.
You mean me in the middle of mylife?
It's not just Sunday morninglight, it's not just on the
field, just right.
(21:11):
It's not just when I'm strong,it's based on when I've got the
worst days.
It's every day, it's every day.
Great story.
I overthink what I said lastnight.
(21:38):
And wonder I feel this way.
I try to fix what I can'tcontrol.
Carrying more than my hands canhold.
Somewhere in the noise I findyou're steady every time.
You don't love filter virginity.
(22:01):
You love the real, unfinish me.
It's not just Sunday morninglight, not just songs that feel
just right.
It's mercy in the mess I hide.
Graceful real life.
It's not just when I'm strong infaith, or when I've got the
(22:25):
words to say.
It's every step, it's every day.
Graceful real life in thelaundry, in the traffic, in the
(22:48):
overthinking panic, in themoments I fall short.
You don't love me any less.
In the questions, in thewaiting, in the barely keeping
faith in the middle of it all.
You're not finished with me.
(23:11):
It's not just Sunday morninglight, not just songs that feel
just right.
It's mercy in the mess I hide.
Graceful real life.
It's not just when I'm strongand faithful when I've got the
words to say it's every step,it's every day.
(23:33):
Graceful real life right here, right now, in the middle of it
all.
