where we explore how the molecules and the foods you eat
communicate with your body, influence your genes, and
ultimately shape your health. If you've listened to previous

new cellular outcomes. And these new outcomes create a

us to the next level. Today we're diving into into one
of the most talked about molecules in modern nutritional
science. That is resveratrol.
You've probably heard about it in the context of red wine
longevity or anti aging. But what is resveratrol really?
Where does it come from? What does it do inside your body

at the molecular level? And most importantly, how can
you use it effectively? We're going to break it all
down. Resveratrol is a natural
polyphenolic compound specifically classified as a
steel beam. Chemically, it has a structure
that allows it to interact with multiple biological pathways,
especially those involved in oxidative stress, inflammation,

and gene regulation. But here's the key idea.
Resveratrol is not just an antioxidant, it's a cellular
signaling molecule. And this is a big deal.
When we talk about a lot of molecules, the first thing that
people say is it's an antioxidant.
Well, most molecules do much more than that.
In the context of resveratrol, that means that when you consume

it, it doesn't just neutralize free radicals, it actually
communicates with your genes andproteins, and this influences
how your cells behave. Resveratrol is produced by
certain plants as a defense molecule.
It's what we call a phytoalexin,meaning it is synthesized when
the plant is under stress, stressful conditions like UV

radiation, fungal infection, andphysical injury.
This is important because it tells us something profound,
which is this resveratrol is a stress response molecule, and
when you consume it, your body interprets it as a signal,
almost like a warning, which activates protective pathways in
the body. You can find resveratrol in

black grapes, especially in the skin of black grapes, peanuts,
blueberries, cranberries, and a plant called Japanese knotweed,
which is where we get resveratrol when we put when we
put it in a nutritional supplement.
But not all resveratrol sources are equal.
The highest dietary concentrations typically come
from grape skins and peanuts. Let's zoom out for a second.

Lants can't run away from stress, so instead they evolved
really cool chemical defense systems.
Resveratrol is one of those systems, and it helps to protect
against microbial invasion, reduce oxidative damage, and
maintain the integrity of the cells in the plant.
Now here's the fascinating part.When you eat those plants, your

body borrows that defense signal.
It's like taking the plants survival strategy and applying
it to our own biology. That's the power of eating
molecules from plants and takingnutritional supplements that
have phytonutrients, molecules from plants.
When you ingest resveratrol, it gets absorbed and interacts with

multiple pathways in the body. Some of the key systems it
influences include sirtuins, especially a gene called SIRT
one, another gene called AMPK which stands for AMP activated
protein kinase, another gene system called NF Kappa B which
is related to inflammation, and then finally another system

called M Tor which is a growth and aging pathway.
Let's break these down in a way that makes sense.
Let's talk about resveratrol andlongevity pathways.
One of the biggest reasons resveratrol became famous is its
connection to longevity. This comes from its ability to
activate CERT One, which is a gene which encodes for a protein
(04:08):
that plays major roles in DNA repair, cellular survival, and
metabolic regulation. Think of CERT as a maintenance
crew for your cells. When activated, this maintenance
crew helps your cells fix damage, improve the efficiency
of the cell, and resist stress. Resveratrol has been shown in
(04:29):
studies to activate CERT one, mimicking some of the effects of
of calorie restriction, which isone of the most well established
ways to extend lifespan in animal animal models.
So one of the things if you wantto live longer, you simply need
to eat less calories. That's it.
That's been shown in every species from fruit flies to rats
(04:52):
to mice to humans. The thing though, is that's
easier said than done, trying toeat less.
And so the cool thing is when wetake resveratrol, it mimics this
caloric restriction mechanism ofaction.
So it's a big deal. The next is resveratrol also
activates AMPK and AMPK is oftencalled the metabolic master

switch. AMPK gets turned on when your
body senses low energy. And when AMPK is activated, it
increases fat burning, it improves insulin sensitivity, it
enhances glucose uptake, and it promotes function energy of the
mitochondria. In simple terms, AMPK helps your

body become more efficient at using energy.
So when reservoir activates AMPK, it's like telling your
body, hey, let's clean things upand run more efficiently.
Chronic inflammation is one of the root drivers of many
diseases. I would say basically all
disease states are a result of chronic inflammation.

That includes heart disease, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and
certainly cancer. Resveratrol helps regulate
inflammation by interacting withthe NF Kappa B pathway, which is
a key inflammatory signaling pathway.
By inhibiting NF Kappa B by turning that gene off,
resveratrol can reduce inflammatory cytokines.

So it can reduce inflammation. It can lower oxidative stress,
which is the pressure put on thebody by free radicals that cause
the body to dysfunction, and it protects tissues from damage.
This is one of the reasons resveratrol has been studied in
so many disease models. One of the earliest areas of

interest for resveratrol was heart health, especially related
to the so-called French paradox.Resveratrol can support heart
health by improving endothelial function, increasing nitric
oxide production. Both of these are with blood
vessels to increase blood vesseldiameter to make sure that blood
(07:01):
can flow properly. It also reduces LDL oxidation
and decreases platelet aggregation.
In simple terms, all this is a fancy way to say resveratrol
helps your blood vessels relax, improves blood flow, and reduces
damage, which is key for good heart health.
Resveratrol can cross the blood brain barrier, and this is a big
(07:24):
deal. Most small molecules, even
though they're small, they can'tcross the blood brain barrier.
The blood brain barrier, or BBB,has been designed to be very
difficult to cross. It's kind of like TSA agents,
right? If you don't have a passport or
a driver's license, you're not getting through.
Same thing, even though some molecules are good and
beneficial for health from plants, the blood brain barrier
(07:46):
does not let them through. But resveratrol is an exception
to this and this allows resveratrol to directly
influence brain cells. And research suggests and has
good data on it showing that resveratrol can increase BDNF,
which stands for Brain derived neurotrophic factor, which is
one of the most important genes in all the human body and
(08:08):
especially in the brain. Whereas rare trial can also
protect the neurons, the circuitry of the brain from
being damaged. It can also reduce neuro
inflammation. So when we talk about
inflammation, we're talking about inflammation throughout
the body, but there's a special type of inflammation in the
neurons called neuro inflammation, and that leads to
(08:29):
neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's,
Huntington's and dementia and others.
So when we reduce neuro inflammation, we significantly
reduce the risk of all these diseases.
And that's one of the cool things that resveratrol does.
It also supports cognitive function.
So it can help you think better.It can help you process
information better. It can help to improve your

mood. It can reduce depression.
It is a master regulator on the brain.
Resveratrol has been widely studied in cancer biology.
It appears to influence several processes, which is which.
One of those is a cell cycle regulation.
Cells grow and progress through their life cycle by going
(09:12):
through different phases of the cell cycle like the S phase, the
M phase, and and the different phases of the cycle.
Resveratrol helps to make sure that cells go through this
process in a normal manner. Resveratrol can now also help
with this process in the cell called apoptosis, which is
(09:32):
programmed cell death. So we want cells to be born, we
want them to grow and mature, and then we want them to die.
Cancer actually happens because cells have figured out a way to
avoid apoptosis. They can actually escape the
jaws of death and become immortal.
The other thing that resveratrolis really good at doing is it is
(09:55):
it influences angiogenesis, which is a formation of blood
vessels. Angiogenesis is critical to
life. When we have new systems, new
tissues, genes are turned on that create new blood vessels in
those tissues so those tissues can receive nourishment.
One of the things that cancer cells does is it hijacks
(10:15):
angiogenesis. So when cancer cells escape the
normal cycle and they become immortal, they're not going to
live very long unless they receive the nutrients that they
need. And these nutrients come from
blood. And So what cancer does, it's
really tricky, is it turns on genes related to angiogenesis.
So it causes new blood vessels to be built to cancer cells, to
(10:40):
the tumors, to the masses, so that that cancer colony can
continue to grow. While while this doesn't mean
resveratrol treats cancer, it does show that resveratrol
interacts with pathways that arecritical in cancer development.
And that's why, in my opinion, you should be taking good
amounts of resveratrol every single day.
(11:02):
Here's a concept that's criticalto understanding resveratrol,
and it's called hormesis. If you haven't heard that word,
let's talk about what it means, and I want you to keep that in
your mind. As we're learning about
molecules and molecular pathwaysand how to be healthy using
molecules from nature, it's important we understand
hormesis. Hormesis is the idea that small
(11:24):
amounts of stress can make you stronger.
Examples include exercise, fasting, cold exposure, right?
You do these three things for short periods of time and it's
going to pay off in the long term.
Resveratrol works in a similar manner.
It creates A mild stress signal in your body and this stress
signal activates protective pathways.
(11:47):
So instead of directly, directlyfixing things, resveratrol tells
your body to turn on your defense system, to turn on genes
related to cognitive function, related to heart health and
other systems of the body. So resveratrol is this catalyst,
so to speak. A small amount of it activates
medicinal pathways in the body. Now we need to talk about
(12:09):
something important related to resveratrol, and that's this.
Resveratrol has low bioavailability.
What that means is it gets metabolized, it gets broken down
quickly. Blood levels of resveratrol
don't stay high for long. So even though we need this,
this is a spark. That catalyst, this molecule,
it's gone quickly from the body.So here's the nuance though.

Even though even though levels drop quickly, the signal it
triggers can last longer. So it's all about the signal,
the signaling pathways, rather than the molecule itself.
Although we do want to figure out how to get resveratrol to
stick around longer in the body,and we'll talk about that in a
minute. But it's all about the signal.
It's like flipping a switch. You don't need the molecule
(12:56):
present forever for the effect to continue.
So how much resveratrol should we take?
Well, let's make this practical.There are two main ways to get
resveratrol #1 is from food. You can naturally consume
resveratrol by eating black grapes, especially the skin, and
peanuts, about 8 black grapes and about 10 peanuts.

These provide smaller, more physiological doses that your
body has likely evolved to handle.
And the cool thing about gettingresveratrol from food is you
have a lot of other molecules inthose foods that bind to and
complex with and balance resveratrol and keep it so that
it stays around longer than the body.
(13:41):
Now the second way we can get resveratrol is from science
based supplementation. And if you're using a supplement
and you want to get resveratrol,the dosage that I like the best
is 200 milligrams of resveratrol.
Why? Because this amount has been
used in many human studies examining metabolic health,
inflammation and cardiovascular markers.
(14:01):
And we get resveratrol in supplement form from Japanese
knotweed. Now food versus supplement,
which is better? Well, this is a great question.
My answer to this is both because food provides a matrix
of compounds along with resveratrol which give
synergistic effects and you havelower more natural doses.
(14:22):
Supplements provide higher targeted doses and they're more
consistent on the intake. They're standardized.
So every time you take a supplement, I know I'm getting
200 milligrams of resveratrol versus when I take, I eat black
grapes. I know that I'm getting around a
certain amount of resveratrol, but it's not exactly dialed in.
(14:42):
It's going to vary from grape togrape and from batch to batch,
so you need to use both strategically.
Eat foods like grapes and peanuts regularly, and then use
supplementation when targeting specific outcomes.
Resveratrol is generally considered safe at moderate
doses. I mean, that makes sense, right?
Because it's from grapes and peanuts which have which are
(15:04):
foods that humans have eaten forthousands of years.
But you want to be careful aboutsuper high doses.
I wouldn't go, you know, some people are making supplements
with 500 milligrams, a thousand,2000 milligrams of resveratrol.
And you don't need that because high doses may interact with
medications. It can affect blood clotting and
it could cause mild digestive issues.

Here's what I want you to take away from this episode.
Resveratrol is not just an anti ageing supplement.
It's a signal and a signal. This signal tells your body to
adapt, repair, protect and optimize.
And this fits into a much largerframework.
Your body is constantly listening to the molecules you

consume. Every bite of food is sending
instructions. Every compound you ingest is
influencing your biology, so resveratrol is a powerful
molecule. You should be getting it into
your body every single day, and it's one of the most well
studied. It's safe, it's effective, and
it's powerful. So the next time you eat a

handful of peanuts or some blackgrapes, remember you're not just
eating food, you're consuming information.
You're interacting with molecules that evolved over
millions of years, molecules that can influence your genes,
your metabolism, and your long term health.
