In an age of endless contentand instant access porn is more
available than ever, but justbecause it's easy to find
(01:54):
doesn't mean it's ethical.
Behind many of the mainstreamvideos that flood free platforms
are hidden realities, includingexploitation, unsafe working
conditions, stolen content, andperformers who are underpaid or
not fairly treated.
For many porn is a source ofpleasure and exploration.
But when the industry profitsfrom coercion or harmful
(02:16):
stereotypes, it reinforcesunhealthy messages and exploits
vulnerable people.
In today's episode, we'llexplore why a growing number of
creators and consumers areturning to ethical porn; a
movement, centered ontransparency, consent, and fair
treatment for everyone involved.
We will discuss what ethicalporn looks like and how we can
(02:37):
support it.
We have a lot to unpack, solet's get into it.
You've probably heard me talkabout porn in other episodes and
how misleading it can be whenit's used as sex education.
But just to be clear, I'm notagainst porn.
In fact, I love it as a way toenhance sexual communication and
(02:58):
explore fantasies.
In addition to enhancing sexualcommunication, there can be
other benefits of porn or adultfilms.
Some examples of these benefitsinclude expanding your sexual
repertoire.
Porn can introduce people tonew ideas, positions, or role
play scenarios that they hadn'tconsidered.
This can help couples exploremutual interests or simply keep
(03:20):
things more exciting.
Additionally, it can help witharousal and foreplay.
Watching porn together canserve as a form of mutual
foreplay, increasing arousal andintimacy.
It can help set the mood, especially for couples with
mismatched libidos or fatigue.
It can help with reducingperformance pressure for
individuals.
Using porn as a solo sexualoutlet can relieve pressure to
(03:43):
always rely on a partner forsatisfaction.
This can be particularly usefulin long distance relationships
or when one partner has a lowersex drive.
It can encourageself-exploration.
Porn can help individualsunderstand their own sexuality
preferences and fantasies, whichthey can then communicate to a
partner.
And this self-awareness canimprove intimacy and
(04:04):
satisfaction in relationships.
It can also help when copingwith mismatched libidos in
relationships where one partnerhas a higher sex drive.
Ethical porn use can be anon-intrusive way to meet those
needs without causing resentmentor pressure, and in normalizing
sexual diversity, ethicallyproduced porn can expose viewers
(04:25):
to diverse bodies, orientationsand kinks, which may help
couples become more accepting ofeach other's desires.
And finally, you can havefantasy exploration without
action.
So porn can allow couples orindividuals to safely explore
fantasies that they don't wantto act out in real life, such as
group sex, BDSM, those types ofthings.
Shared viewing can sparkconversations about desires,
(04:48):
fantasies, and preferences thatmay otherwise be difficult to
bring up.
And couples who watch porntogether might feel more
comfortable discussing their ownturn-ons and boundaries.
In fact, among couples in theUS, about 54% of men and 20% of
women in dating relationshipsreport watching porn together
regularly.
But some people experiencenegative effects from porn, such
(05:10):
as unrealistic expectations,dependence or dissatisfaction.
So it's not universallypositive.
Additionally, mainstream pornoften reflects a patriarchal
perspective, prioritizing malepleasure and control while
sidelining women's autonomy anddesires.
Ethical porn flips the script.
It centers mutual pleasure, diversity, and performer agency,
(05:33):
making it a much more consciousand inclusive alternative.
So what exactly is ethicalporn?
In short, ethical porn is adultcontent created with an
emphasis on respect, consent, fair labor practices, and
authentic representation.
It goes beyond what's justshown on the screen.
(05:54):
It's about how the content ismade, who profits from it and
whether the people involved areempowered participants.
Key features of ethical porninclude consent and
communication, fair pay and safeworking conditions, inclusive
representation and diversity,transparency and accountability,
and an emphasis on anti-piracyand performance control.
(06:17):
So let's break each of thesedown.
I.
Ethical porn uses clear consentcheck-ins often before, during,
and after scenes in ethicalporn.
Consent isn't a one-timeformality.
It's an ongoing, enthusiastic, and informed process.
Unlike some mainstreamproductions which may blur lines
(06:38):
or rely on coercion, ethicalporn, prioritizes performer,
autonomy and wellbeing everystep of the way.
Ethical Productions usuallybegan with in-depth
conversations about boundaries,expectations, and limits.
Performers openly discuss whatthey're comfortable doing and
what they're not.
These agreements are not justverbal.
They're often written down indetailed consent forms on set.
(07:02):
They retain full control andcan stop or change a scene at
any time without consequence.
Communication is constant withregular check-ins to ensure
everyone feels safe andcomfortable.
Directors or intimacycoordinators may ask things
like, are you comfortable withthis, or do you want to change
positions or take a break, or isthere anything that we should
(07:22):
avoid?
Performers in ethical porn havethe right to say no to any act
at any time, Even during ashoot, consent can be withdrawn
without penalty.
This protects the performersbodily autonomy and mental
wellbeing.
This is important because realconsent protects performers,
models healthy communication andchallenges, toxic myths that
(07:44):
normalize pushing past someone'slimits.
Aftercare is another keyfeature offering emotional or
physical support after intensescenes.
This could involve cuddling, snacks, water, a private space
just to decompress or a simple, how are you feeling?
Some ethical porn producerseven include pre-scene
interviews or post-scenedebriefs in their videos.
(08:06):
These clips show performerstalking openly about their
experiences, limits or favoriteparts of the scene, reinforcing
that what you're watching isbased on mutual enjoyment and
trust.
When consent is visible andprioritized, it doesn't ruin the
fantasy.
It redefines it.
Without real informed consent, what you're watching isn't just
(08:27):
unethical, it can veer intoabusive territory.
Ethical porn acknowledges thatpleasure and safety go hand in
hand.
This matters because itprotects performers from
exploitation, trauma andlong-term psychological harm.
It models healthy sexualcommunication for viewers.
Showing that boundariesnegotiation and checking in can
be sexy, not awkward.
(08:48):
It fights toxic myths thatsilence or override people's no,
especially women, LGBTQ pluspeople and sex workers.
And it affirms that pleasureshould be mutual.
Ethical porn reframes sex as ashared experience built on
trust, not something done tosomeone, but with them.
By choosing content thatprioritizes consent and open
(09:12):
communication, we support acultural shift towards intimacy
that's mutual, respectful, andgenuinely pleasurable.
Ethical porn shows us thatpleasure isn't about pushing
someone's boundaries.
It's about exploring withinthem.
And that idea is radical in amedia landscape that often
treats sex as somethingperformative, transactional, or
(09:34):
one-sided.
Ethical porn isn't just aboutconsent.
It's also about faircompensation, safe working
conditions, and performerempowerment.
Many performers in mainstreamporn work under poor conditions,
including coercion, unpaidlabor, and limited rights over
how their content isdistributed.
Some performers are traffickedor pressured into scenes that
(09:57):
they didn't agree to do.
Ethical porn ensures clearconsent, fair pay, and safe
working environments.
Traditional pay in mainstreamadult film varies significantly.
Female performers typicallyearn between $100-6000 per scene
while male performers makeabout 100 to $400.
(10:18):
Ethical producers oftenbenchmark Fair Pay Around 800 to
1200 per scene for women and$500 to 600 for men, an amount
that some producer sites claimis comparable to, or equivalent
to union rates.
Some ethical content creatorsoffer performers a stake in
long-term revenue through profitsharing or subscription models.
(10:40):
Especially when performersproduce content independently or
collaborate on platform-baseddistribution.
This gives performers long-termincome and ownership.
Organizations like the AdultPerformer Advocacy Committee or
APAC and the Adult PerformanceArtists Guild APAG, are
essential to advancing ethics.
(11:01):
The Adult Performance ArtistGuild was the first federally
recognized porn union in the US.
APAG negotiates standardcontracts and campaigns for
things like performerhealthcare, retirement savings,
STD, testing coverage onsetstewards, and improved rights
overall.
Paying directly for contentsupports creators who ensure
(11:23):
fair compensation.
The Adult Performer AdvocacyCommittee has ruled out a
performer bill of rights, reinforced consent and autonomy
training, and push for mentalhealth, legal support, and
health standards.
A 2023 APAC influence studyfound that 71% of performers
worked with studios offeringtransparent payments via written
(11:44):
contracts.
89% had consent interviewsbefore filming, and 76% were
assured of regular STI testingevery 14 days.
On ethical sets, safety comesfirst.
Clean environments IDverification.
Clear boundaries and regularcheck-ins are standard, fair
(12:04):
wages.
Transparent contracts andsupportive working conditions
empower performers with greaterautonomy and control over their
careers.
Ultimately, ethical porn isn'tjust better for performers.
It redefines the industry bycentering equity, respect, and
real empowerment.
This shows how consumerschoices directly support better
(12:24):
practices.
As Dr.
Lila Moon puts it, consumershave more power than they think.
Every click and every paymentsends a message about the kind
of industry we want to support.
Now let's talk aboutrepresentation and diversity and
why there are key reasons toconsider ethical instead of
(12:46):
mainstream adult content.
Representation and diversityare critical components of
ethical porn because theydirectly challenge the narrow,
often harmful standards thathave dominated mainstream adult
content for decades.
Ethical porn isn't just aboutdoing less harm.
It's about actively creatingspace for everyone to see
(13:06):
themselves reflected withdignity agency and desire.
Mainstream porn oftenreinforces stereotypes about
race, gender, and body types.
It tends to showcase idealized, unrealistic, and
hypersexualized versions ofpeople.
This can contribute to bodyimage issues, racial bias, or
the sexual objectification ofcertain groups.
(13:27):
Ethical porn, prioritizesinclusive casting avoids racial
tropes and represents a range ofbodies, identities and
orientations.
It's about actively includingpeople who have long been
misrepresented or excluded.
Mainstream porn often relies onharmful stereotypes such as
black men being portrayed asaggressive, Asian women as
(13:51):
submissive, trans people framedas traps or surprises, fat
bodies as jokes, and queer sexfiltered through a heterosexual
lens.
These stereotypes don't justaffect performers.
They shape how viewers thinkabout sex, identity, and power.
In contrast, ethical pornprioritizes authentic inclusive
(14:11):
storytelling.
It centers performers ofdiverse races, genders, body
types, and sexualities.
Not as fetish content, but asfull participants with agency.
When porn reflects a broaderrange of experiences, it does
more than diversify the visual.
It validates differentidentities and desires,
encourages self-acceptance forpeople whose bodies or
(14:32):
sexualities don't fit themainstream mold.
It normalizes real pleasureover performative, exaggerated
portrayals and shows thateveryone deserves sexual agency
and joy, not just a select few.
Okay.
As sex educator and filmmaker,Tristan Torino puts it, ethical
porn doesn't just ask who'shaving sex.
It asks, what stories are wetelling and how are we telling
(14:54):
them?
So how does ethical porn putdiversity into practice?
First, they actively hireperformers from a range of
racial backgrounds, genderidentities, body sizes, and
sexual orientations.
For example, Pink Label TVcurates films that center queer,
trans, BIPOC, and non-binaryperformers, while Four Chambers
(15:16):
features alternative artisticand body diverse porn outside
the mainstream aesthetics, ErikaLust films are directed from a
female perspective, prioritizingemotional nuance, foreplay,
intimacy, and a fuller range ofdesire.
This counters the traditionalmale gaze that dominates
mainstream porn where women areoften objectified and the camera
(15:38):
serves aA male-centric fantasy.
Crash Pad series has long beena gold standard for authentic
queer and trans representation.
The rise of indie platformslike Just for Fans, Mini Vids
and OnlyFans, allows performersto produce their own content
with full creative control, settheir own boundaries, pricing
(15:58):
and audience, and representthemselves authentically without
a middleman, enforcingstereotypes.
This DIY performer first modelhas been particularly powerful
for marginalized creators who'vehistorically been shut out or
misrepresented.
Diversity in ethical porn isn'tjust a marketing trend, it's a
(16:19):
conscious rejection of porn's,exploitative past, and a step
toward a more honest, liberatingfuture.
When diversity is done right, porn becomes more affirming,
more pleasurable, and moreeducational by uplifting
unrepresentative voices.
Ethical porn shows thateveryone deserves visibility,
autonomy and pleasure.
Transparency and accountabilityare cornerstones of ethical
(16:44):
porn in an industry with ahistory of exploitation and
secrecy.
These values rebuild trustbetween performers, producers,
and viewers by centeringconsent, clarity, and fairness
for performers.
Transparency means knowingexactly what they're agreeing
to.
Clear contracts, contentdistribution terms, pay and
(17:04):
onset expectations.
Accountability ensures thatthere are systems to address
harm, withdraw consent, andresolve disputes, thus
protecting performers fromcoercion, exploitation, or
regret.
For viewers, it offersconfidence.
As we've mentioned previously, historically, and in mainstream
porn, many performers have beenpressured into scenes that they
(17:28):
didn't fully agree to misledabout how or where content would
be distributed, denied fair payor proper documentation, and
silenced when they reported harmor abuse.
Transparency combats this byensuring that everybody involved
understands the full scope oftheir work.
From compensation and contentrights to distribution and
(17:48):
boundaries.
Accountability ensures that ifsomething goes wrong, there are
systems in place to make itright.
Ethical studios make it easy toknow whether content was
created consensually and fairlyvisible consent practices like
pre and post scene interviewsand published ethics policies
help demystify the process andmodel respect.
(18:10):
Ethical studios like Erika Lustfilms and Crash Pad series also
publish their standards creditall collaborators and respond to
performer feedback, includingcontent takedown requests.
Transparent, ethical porn givesconsumers the tools to make
informed choices.
It also breaks the illusionthat porn is a free for all,
(18:31):
reminding viewers that realpeople with real boundaries are
involved in creating thiscontent.
Furthermore by modeling ethicalbehavior, transparent studios,
pressure less ethical ones toimprove publicly outlining
policies on consent, paytesting, and performer care sets
a new baseline for what'sacceptable and what's not.
(18:52):
Without transparency, abuse andcoercion thrive.
Ethical porn rejects that modelby making communication
informed consent andaccountability.
Non-negotiable transparency isconsent.
And in ethical porn, that meanseveryone involved knows what's
happening, why and how.
This ensures both viewers andperformers that sex on screen is
(19:13):
rooted in respect.
not secrecy.
In ethical porn performers havethe power to say yes with full
information.
Viewers have the power to makeconscious, informed choices, and
creators have theresponsibility to uphold the
values they claim to stand for.
Because porn isn't unethical bynature.
It's unethical.
(19:34):
When consent, clarity, and careare absent, transparency and
accountability, bring thosevalues back to center.
Finally, let's talk aboutanti-piracy and performer
control.
Ethical porn respects copyrightand ensures that content isn't
shared or profited from withoutthe creator's consent.
(19:55):
Performer control andanti-piracy protections are
essential to ensure thatcreators retain power over their
image, income, and safety.
When porn is pirated, such asuploaded, shared, or
redistributed without consent, performers and producers lose
income because pirated contentmeans people are watching
without paying.
They lose control becausescenes are taken out of context
(20:18):
and spread across platforms thatthey never agreed to.
And safety is affected becausecontent can be weaponized.
Stolen clips can be used forharassment, revenge porn, or
outing, which can lead todevastating consequences.
Ethical porn ensures thatperformers decide what content
is made, where it appears, whoprofits and when it can be
(20:39):
removed.
Without that control, performers are treated as
disposable as if their image andbody belonged to someone else
forever.
Ethical producers ensureperformers understand who owns
the footage, can negotiate usageterms such as how long it stays
online, or whether they cancreate cross posts on it and are
allowed to remove or editcontent if they change their
(21:02):
mind.
Many indie platforms give fullownership to creators and
studios committed to ethics,Support legal protections
watermarking, DMCA take downs, and that is Digital Millennium
Copyright Act.
And they join anti-piracycoalitions or platforms like
Protect Your Content, Take DownPiracy or Performer Protection
(21:24):
Coalition, Some even higherdedicated teams to monitor for
leaks, a service that used toonly exist for mainstream
entertainment, but is nowincreasingly vital for sex
workers.
Many ethical studios allowperformers to set time limits on
how long a scene can beavailable, request removal or
blurring of old scenes, andmaintain rights over how their
(21:46):
name, likeness, or body ismarketed.
This is especially importantfor people who may lead the
industry transition orexperience changes in safety,
such as having stalkers orfamily threats.
Without these safeguards,performers face trauma,
financial loss, andnon-consensual exposure.
So what can viewers do?
(22:07):
Ethical porn starts withconscious choices.
Choosing ethical porn helpsuphold the autonomy, dignity,
and safety of performers.
It pushes back againstexploitative and harmful
industry norms while encouragingmore authentic, diverse, and
respectful representations ofsex and pleasure.
Ultimately, it also helps youbecome a more conscious and
(22:29):
responsible consumer.
As a viewer, you have realpower to support safer fairer
practices in adultentertainment.
And here's how.
Number one, pay for your pornFree content often comes at the
expense of performer pay andconsent.
Ethical porn respects labor, and that means compensation.
Check out sites like Crash PadSeries.com or erika lust.com,
(22:53):
and that's Erika with a K.
Second, avoid pirate sites, piracy strips, performers of
control and income.
If you're not sure if a site islegit, do some research.
Third report, stolen content.
If you see pirated eclipse, report them to the studio or
performer.
Four.
(23:14):
Support direct creators.
Platforms like just for fans, mini vs.
Fan.
Centro or OnlyFans givecreators full control of their
work.
And five, don't share contentwithout permission.
Even if something seems public,it doesn't mean it's free to
redistribute.
ethical porn isn't just aboutconsuming adult content with a
(23:36):
clear conscience.
It's about shifting theculture.
It's about valuing consent, diversity, pleasure, and
fairness.
And most importantly, it'sabout treating everyone involved
in the production of porn ashuman beings, not just fantasy
objects.
Porn can shape how we see sex, power, and pleasure.
So it's vital that it does sowith justice and integrity.
(23:58):
It's not about moral judgment.
It's about choosing contentthat aligns with values like
respect, consent, and fairness.
ethical porn can be just assexy, but with a lot more
integrity.
That's it for today's episode.
