>> Announcer (00:00):
On the next episode of sips, suds
>> Julianna (00:02):
and smokes, we're just gonna cover a flight of non
alcoholic beer.
>> Dave (00:07):
The non alcoholic beers we'll be tasting and
discussing today are from untitled art flavor
italian style pills from barrow brewing, kingston
golden pills from laganitas brewing company,
laganitas ipna from sierra nevada brewing company
(00:28):
trail pass n a ipa from rheingist brewing, ghost
haze hazy ipa from the boston beer company, samuel
adams just the haze hazy na ipa from best day
brewing their hazy ipa. And from deschutes
(00:48):
brewing, black butte in a porter.
>> Announcer (00:53):
We'll be right back after this break. Brought to
(01:18):
you almost live from the dude in the basement
studios.
>> Julianna (01:21):
Why?
>> Announcer (01:22):
Because that's where the goods stuff is. It sips,
suds and smokes with your smoking host, the good
old boys.
>> Julianna (01:50):
Suds.
>> Announcer (01:50):
Suds.
>> Dave (01:51):
Suds.
>> Announcer (01:52):
It's time for more or suds.
>> Julianna (01:59):
Welcome, everyone. Here we are for yet another
suds segment where we don't judge people for what
they drink, we only judge them for how they drink
it. And what I mean is, things like hard seltzers,
they do not qualify as
>> Dave (02:18):
pinky up Drinks down, man bun.
>> Julianna (02:21):
Bring it down. Okay, put it down. I'm one of your
hosts, good old gal Juliana. And joining me today
at the table
>> Dave (02:30):
is good old boy Dave, the one and only.
>> Julianna (02:35):
Yeah, okay.
>> Dave (02:37):
And whatever.
>> Julianna (02:38):
Exactly. Now, we've covered non alcoholic beers a
few times on this show, and in different ways,
we've tricked some co hosts into thinking that
they were drinking all Canadian beer. Hey, we've
done a dry January episode covering Athletic
Brewing Company, and we've even done some blind
(03:00):
comparisons between the regular beers and their
non alcoholic counterparts. Today though, we're
just gonna cover a flight of non alcoholic beer.
Some from breweries we know very well and then
others from ones that are new to us. Lent is
coming up soon, and many, many people participate
(03:21):
by giving up certain things that they enjoy. You
know, like meat, cheese, sweets, and, uh, some
even give up alcohol.
>> Dave (03:32):
Jesus, hold my beer.
>> Julianna (03:35):
Funny.
>> Dave (03:37):
All right, aside from lint, people also like to
take a break from their regular drinks of choice
to, you know, give your break a liver. Or give
your liver a break.
>> Julianna (03:47):
Rather give you a break a liver.
>> Dave (03:48):
Uh, break your liver. I think mine's broken. Shed
some pounds or for other health reasons. I myself
am drinking a lot of NA beer right now to get
myself in shape for speedo season.
>> Julianna (04:02):
I just threw, uh, up in my mouth a little bit.
Seriously, Dave, Seriously.
>> Dave (04:10):
If you got it, show it.
>> Julianna (04:11):
You know what? Thanks for making things awkward
yet again. As usual, I Might have to drink a real
beer now or 20.
>> Dave (04:22):
May have to go straight to the scotch after this.
>> Julianna (04:25):
Yeah, I might. Okay, uh, you know what? Go ahead
and just give us a lineup.
>> Dave (04:29):
The non alcoholic beers we'll be tasting and
discussing today are from Untitled Art in Madison,
Wisconsin. Flavor Italian Style pills from Barrow
Brewing in so Weckley, Pennsylvania. Kingston
Golden Pills from Laganitas Brewing Company in
(04:50):
Petaluma, California. Laganitas Ipna from Sierra
Nevada Brewing Company in Chico, California. Trail
Pass N A IPA from Rheingist Brewing in Cincinnati,
Ohio. Although it was brewing Canada. Ghost Haze
Hazy IPA from the Boston Beer Company in Boston Ma
(05:15):
Samuel Adams. Just the Hayes Hazy Naipa from Best
Day Brewing in Sausalito, California, their Hazy
ipa. And from Deschutes Brewing in Bend. Or I
mean, sorry, Bend, Oregon, uh, Black Butte in a
Porter.
>> Julianna (05:37):
Okay, well, we're gonna start tasting these beers
on the fly and then giving our tasting notes and
rating them from one to five as we go. One being
and five being.
>> Announcer (05:50):
Wow.
>> Julianna (05:51):
Oh, um, exactly. Okay, first up for bids is gonna
be the flavor. Huh? Non alcoholic Italian style
pilsner.
>> Announcer (06:04):
You can't speak Italian just because you have a
mustache.
>> Julianna (06:07):
Ain't that the truth. Um, so this is from Untitled
Art and we are fans of Untitled Art. We've had
many of their beers over the years.
>> Dave (06:17):
I will never buy art that has a title at this
point. Wow.
>> Julianna (06:23):
Um, that's. Yeah, that's. That's lovely. Okay,
well, anyways, this Italian style pilsner is
refined, crisp, and showcases the delicate balance
of tradition and innovation. It is dry hopped with
Howlertau, middle Fru and Strata hops. It offers
(06:45):
floral and herbal aromas complemented by hint of
citrus and a subtle tropical fruit juzh, for lack
of a better word. Yes. It's crafted for those who
appreciate a classic pilsner with a touch of
modern hop character, all without the alcohol.
This is less than 0.5% ABV, uh, 2 grams of sugar
(07:07):
and 440 calories.
>> Dave (07:09):
Wow, 40 calories. That's great.
>> Julianna (07:11):
40 calories. Just.
>> Dave (07:12):
Just to clarify, for everyone in the United
States, for a beer to be considered non alcohol,
it has to be, uh, 0.5% ABV or less. So there you
go. Uh, every beer we discuss on this show will be
0.5 or less.
>> Julianna (07:30):
Yeah. Okay.
>> Dave (07:32):
This is nice. You know, Italian pilsners are the
more fruity, hop forward flavorful versions of. Of
pilsners like, like the Italian people. They're
very bold and flavorful. So, um, I think this is a
(07:54):
great example of how you can take an NA beer and
turn it into a pretty good example of the style.
>> Julianna (08:02):
Yeah.
>> Dave (08:02):
I think the dry hopping makes all the difference.
It really kind of lends those extra flavor notes
and the. And helps the aroma out as well. It's got
a pretty creamy mouthfeel, so it's. It's a nice
little pseudo Italian pilsner. I like it.
>> Julianna (08:19):
I think this is solid. I mean, the mouth feel on
it is reasonable. Um, it is a little fruity, but
that's okay. That's what you would expect. Um, and
I think if we had it a little bit colder, it would
be a little crisper, which might be.
>> Dave (08:39):
Sure.
>> Julianna (08:39):
A little bit more enjoyable. But I mean, that
aside, I think it's solid.
>> Dave (08:46):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (08:46):
Yeah. Okay.
>> Dave (08:48):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (08:48):
What shall we rate this? A, uh, four. Very good.
Okay. Is this something you might see in your
rotation?
>> Dave (09:02):
I could add this to the NA rotation.
>> Announcer (09:04):
Sure.
>> Julianna (09:04):
Okay.
>> Dave (09:05):
It's nice.
>> Julianna (09:05):
Okay. And that definitely like something you could
try during Lent if you were to give up alcohol
during lunch.
>> Dave (09:11):
If I were, yes.
>> Julianna (09:15):
Being fine.
>> Dave (09:16):
I will be adding it to my alcohol reduction
schedule.
>> Julianna (09:21):
Oh, nice. Nice.
>> Dave (09:23):
Yes.
>> Julianna (09:23):
Okay, well, let's move on to number two from Biro.
Now, just to be fair, this is brewed on the
western side of the
>> Dave (09:34):
state, so it should be great.
>> Julianna (09:36):
Sure. Although according to the website, this is
born in London and crafted in America and enjoyed
worldwide.
>> Dave (09:47):
Yeah. So this is, uh, Tom Holland, the. The guy
who played Spider man in all the Marvel mov. Um,
skinny little British kid. Um, this is his brand.
Uh, I. It's actually not terrible. It's a little
unbalanced to me. I wish there was a little more
(10:08):
hop character to it just to balance things out.
It's a little. Just like malty water in a way. Um,
pretty thin body, don't you think?
>> Julianna (10:21):
Yeah, it's. It's really thin. It reminds me of
second runnings.
>> Dave (10:26):
Honestly, that's a home brewing term. So.
>> Julianna (10:28):
Yeah. Yeah.
>> Dave (10:30):
When you're mashing.
>> Julianna (10:32):
Yeah. When you're mashing. Yeah. And you're
finished mashing in and you've waited and like the
first runnings are the really sweet, thick, yummy
goodness.
>> Dave (10:43):
That's what most.
>> Julianna (10:44):
Combined with a good scotch or bourbon for a
minute. And then the second runnings are
afterwards. Well, we'll return in just a minute.
Welcome back, everyone. So today's episode, we are
taking a bunch of non alcoholic beer that we found
(11:07):
at the store and talking about it. Um, some are
from breweries that we are well aware of. You
know, some popular ones, uh, semi popular ones.
And then there's some that are new to us.
>> Dave (11:22):
Well, it's interesting, you know, because it
started out like there are some breweries that are
dedicated to non alcoholic beer, like Athletic
Brewing Company Go brewing. Uh, some of that we're
not, you know, not covering today necessarily,
but, like, Best Day brewing is one. The ones we
have today. And barrow, like the one we're talking
(11:43):
about right now, you know, that's what they do.
The brand was built around nonalcoholic beer. And
then you have the other part, other side of that,
where established breweries are getting into the
non alcoholic beer space because it's becoming so
popular. You know, like, they either have to go
(12:04):
into THC and, you know, fuse drinks, or they have
to go to NA beers or seltzers or a combination of
all those. And I. And um, for me, if you're a
brewery, you know, I would rather go to like a
Brooklyn brewery or, you know, one of these guys
like, uh, you know, uh, Laganitis or somewhere
(12:28):
that I know their beers and like, try an NA
version of something. Because I would feel a
little better about that than going and drinking a
seltzer or, you know, whatever, a mocktail or
whatever kind of stuff's going on. But I think
for, for the ones that are dedicated, uh, in a
brewery, that's what they specialize in. I think
(12:52):
some of them do it really well. But I think it's.
It's interesting to see how many of them are
popping up now.
>> Julianna (12:58):
Yeah.
>> Dave (12:59):
You know.
>> Julianna (12:59):
Oh, yeah. It. I. I mean, it blows my mind at how
many are there. It's almost like when the craft
beer boom happened.
>> Dave (13:09):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (13:09):
And all these really good craft breweries, like,
came out of the woodwork. I feel like that's
what's happening now with NA stuff.
>> Dave (13:15):
Yeah. And I think, you know, like, with this, this
Barrow, the Tom Holland thing, I think you're also
seeing where celebrities are getting into the
drink market and where you like, you see like, you
know, Snoop Dogg and Dre and they have their gin
or the Kardashians and they have their vodka soda
or whatever. And like, all these different things
(13:35):
are going on. Like, some of these really young
celebrities are really into fitness and healthy
lifestyle. They're like, hey, we know people want
to go out and party or whatever, but you can do it
and not have alcohol.
>> Julianna (13:49):
Yeah, yeah. True, true.
>> Dave (13:51):
So I think that's where he's. The space he's
trying to be in,
>> Julianna (13:55):
you know, and you can join the club where you earn
rewards on every purchase and can even Maybe
possibly talk to him.
>> Dave (14:07):
Ooh, yeah.
>> Julianna (14:10):
I mean, you get exclusive Q&As with him.
>> Dave (14:14):
I don't know. That just sounds great. Like
everybody just sit around drinking an n a beer and
asking the questions about Zendaya. Ah.
>> Julianna (14:24):
Or non alcoholic beer. I don't, I don't know.
Anyways, um, what shall we rate this one?
>> Dave (14:33):
I don't think it's as good as the first one. Um,
I'd feel comfortable rating this at three.
>> Julianna (14:39):
Three. Yeah. Yeah. One thing you know, of note,
with the Untitled Art that we had the first beer,
there was some neat art work on it because
Untitled Art is known for using artists too.
>> Dave (14:54):
They like liquid art and visual art.
>> Julianna (14:56):
Yes, yes, yes. This one is very classy looking.
Like it almost. Yes. It, it looks like the
champagne of beer cans almost.
>> Dave (15:08):
Which you could feel cool. Or sitting, standing at
the bar with a can of this, you know, or not.
>> Julianna (15:15):
Yeah, yeah.
>> Dave (15:16):
But I, I, I will say this for the first beer, hops
cover up a lot of things. And this beer, the
second one, a little bit more hops would have
balanced this thing out a lot more, but it would
have made it better.
>> Julianna (15:31):
I think so too. I think so too. Okay, moving on.
Let's talk about the laganitas. Ipna. Now, my
expectation is high because I am a fan of
laganitas and I really, I mean, we have a
laganitas print in our house. We've been big fans
(15:53):
of them over
>> Dave (15:54):
the years and years.
>> Julianna (15:55):
Yes, yes.
>> Dave (15:56):
And for me, also, on top of their beer being
really good, they started the hop water trend. And
uh, and like hop infused water and making it taste
good.
>> Julianna (16:08):
Yes.
>> Dave (16:09):
And like, there's to me is probably still the
best.
>> Julianna (16:12):
Yeah.
>> Dave (16:13):
Of all.
>> Julianna (16:13):
Yeah. I mean, they set the standard. They started
the trench, you know, but, and uh, it's funny
because I used to recommend that to my friends
that were pregnant that still wanted to have
something the flavor and this, this scratched the
itch, so to speak. Yeah. Uh, where they didn't
have to worry, you know. But, um, anyways, so this
(16:35):
one is 0.5 ABV, which is great. And 20 IBUs. And
in terms of hops that they used, it says the hops
present an almost tea, like herbal notes. Um, and
there's a hint of lemon on it. And that's about
(16:58):
it. Oh. Piney dank bolt of citra mosaic and
Columbus hops. There you go.
>> Dave (17:08):
Usually when you're thinking these west coast
guys, citra is going to be in there in Columbus.
But yeah, it's nice to know they've Got the mosaic
in there as well. I had a little bit of that kind
of grassy and melon flavor. I think this is about
as good as a non alcoholic IPA can be. Mouthfeel
(17:29):
is there, which. That's one thing that a lot of
these beers lack. So we were talking about hop
water. A lot of these non alcohol, non alcoholic
IPAs are basically hop water, you know, but
they're with a little bit of stuff in, you know,
thrown in. This is a beer that has hops, has a
(17:51):
little bit of body. I've had session IPAs that
seem more, more NA than this. Right. Like, yeah,
this beer definitely has some things going on and
it's the full experience. I'm really impressed
with this. I will 100% be adding this to my
(18:12):
rotation.
>> Julianna (18:15):
Uh, the color on it is like gorgeous too. Yeah,
they also. There, yeah, they also talk about how,
um, they have, excuse me, English crystal malt and
Canadian two row barley that are added to this.
And I think that barley in there just helps give
(18:35):
it that feeling of being a beer beer without it
being a beer beer, if that makes sense.
>> Dave (18:40):
It's a little darker than some of the others that
I've seen too. So it's not super dark, but it's,
it's got, uh, you can tell there's a little bit
more going on with it.
>> Julianna (18:51):
Oh.
>> Dave (18:51):
And I really. Yeah, I think that everything they
can do to make it more of a beer, you know, that
that adds to the experience. And this 100% does
that. Like, uh, there's. I just don't really think
there's a way it could be any better unless it had
alcohol.
>> Julianna (19:10):
Right, right. No, this is, I. This is the best so
far. Yeah, for sure. And what are we going to rate
this one?
>> Dave (19:18):
I think we should rate this.
>> Julianna (19:20):
Oh, heck yes. With the five, you know, and I think
it's really fitting.
>> Announcer (19:26):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (19:30):
Because Laganita's kind of set the standard with
the hop waters and the beginning of what non
alcoholic could be. And they've been able to
practice it for so long.
>> Dave (19:41):
Yeah. Uh, and their session IPAs have been great
too.
>> Julianna (19:43):
Well, more in just a minute. Welcome back,
everyone. So today's episode, we are talking about
some non alcoholic beers that we found at the
store. Uh, some are new, some are old. Well, in
terms of breweries that we
>> Dave (20:02):
know, hopefully they're not that old.
>> Julianna (20:03):
No, they're not that old. They are fresh in that
regard, but they are from breweries that are old
to us and breweries that are new to us.
>> Dave (20:11):
God almighty.
>> Julianna (20:13):
Exactly. And so now let's talk about the Sierra
Nevada Trail Pass IPA, Chico, California. Exactly.
Which is shipping to all lower 48 states except
for Georgia, Idaho and a few others, including
Tennessee. How rude.
>> Dave (20:31):
How rude.
>> Julianna (20:31):
Yes, except we got it. But anyways, um, grab a
trail pass and start a new adventure with miles of
flavor. Explore the hoppy notes of citrus and pine
from Amarillo and CTZ varieties with non alcoholic
Trail Pass ipa.
>> Dave (20:47):
Maybe we get it from, uh, North Carolina.
>> Julianna (20:49):
We probably, yeah. Oh, I see. Because. Yeah, yeah,
that makes sense. Because if you think about
Tennessee, West
>> Dave (20:57):
Virginia, Georgia, you don't want your California
crap. Give us the North Carolina stuff.
>> Julianna (21:02):
Yeah, exactly.
>> Dave (21:03):
Jerks.
>> Julianna (21:03):
The place is better anyways. Kidding. Okay. Silky
malt body, clean, hot bitterness is just what you
would expect from the world class Sierra Nevada
IPA, except that it is less than 0.5% ABV.
>> Dave (21:20):
It's quite pungent.
>> Julianna (21:22):
It can be. Anyways, um, yeah, so Amarillo, Bravo,
Cascade, CTZ and Magnum hops.
>> Dave (21:34):
Interesting. It's um, it's got a nice bouquet to
it. A lot of these, a lot of these really let the
hops kind of shine because there's not a ton of,
of malt or anything to really conflict or, you
(21:57):
know, you know what I mean? Like, they, it just,
they just create a nice little thing for the, for
the hops to ride on top. And this one, it's a
really nice blend. I, I get weirded out sometimes
when people try to blend too many hop varieties
into one beer.
>> Julianna (22:14):
Yeah.
>> Dave (22:15):
But it's not like I would ever second guess Sierra
Nevada on anything. No, I mean, they're just too
good. Been too good for too long. And this is a
nice, subtle, easy drinking beer. I don't like it
as much as the Laganitas. I don't think it's
quite, it doesn't have the, the backbone that the
(22:38):
Laganitas beer does. It's really more just about
the hops. But if you're a hop head and you're
looking to cut back on calories and, um, you know,
alcohol and stuff, I think this is go get, go get
this trail pass, you know, and like, you can tell
they market it for people who like, go out and do
(22:59):
stuff, you know, I'm not really one of those
people, so I would just sit inside and drink it.
But I still think I like this, this beer quite a
bit. It's very nice.
>> Julianna (23:11):
Well, I mean, that's the whole thing about Sierra
Nevada and in some of those west coast breweries
that have, you know, been around for a while,
like. Yeah, even to shoots. Like, I feel like
that's something that's very out and you know,
sure, let's
>> Dave (23:25):
go out and do stuff and then drink a beer.
>> Julianna (23:27):
Right, right. Yeah, exactly.
>> Dave (23:29):
Um, I'm like, skip that first part and just get to
the second part. But.
>> Julianna (23:35):
Well, I know, I know. Can't always be that way.
Um, but I feel like this is, this is a solid
offering too. And again, you would expect that
from Sierra Nevada because of how well crafted. I
mean, that Pale Ale, my God, it's the best.
>> Dave (23:52):
It's the best there is.
>> Julianna (23:54):
Right?
>> Dave (23:55):
Might be the best beer ever.
>> Julianna (23:56):
And Torpedo, I mean, very good. Right? It like the
fact that you can just rattle those off and I'm
just.
>> Dave (24:03):
The thing about this one is you're not gonna. I
don't think anyone would ever think it's anything
other than a non alcoholic beer. Right. So with
the Laganitas beer, you might be able to convince
yourself it's a session or something. Like it's
just a, you know, a really low abv. But this one
(24:25):
and the others that we've had, I really don't see
anyone thinking that they're anything other than,
um, a non alcoholic beer. Right, right. There's
nothing wrong with that because if you're, if
you're choosing to drink in a beer, then you know
you're giving up something.
>> Julianna (24:46):
Yes.
>> Dave (24:47):
You know?
>> Julianna (24:47):
Yes. Cool.
>> Dave (24:49):
But I think you still feel good about this one.
>> Julianna (24:51):
Oh, yeah, no, totally, totally.
>> Dave (24:54):
It's very enjoyable.
>> Julianna (24:55):
Yeah. Uh, very easy. Very easy. And I, I think
having it like super cold and crazy.
>> Dave (25:01):
I like cops.
>> Julianna (25:03):
Yeah, you do. But again, I, I think that people
that gravitate towards Sierra Nevada are, are
hoppy people anyways.
>> Dave (25:10):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (25:10):
You know what I mean?
>> Dave (25:11):
Yeah. Well, I mean, if you're buying an ipa,
that's what you're going for, that's
>> Julianna (25:14):
what you're going for, and that's what you're
going to get.
>> Dave (25:16):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (25:16):
Yeah. So what do you want to rate this one? Yeah,
I think we do a good four. Okay. Now let's go to
Ohio.
>> Dave (25:27):
Do we have to?
>> Julianna (25:28):
We do, yes. For this instance. And let's talk
about the Ghost Haze Non Alcoholic Hazy ipa. Would
you say that it's hazy?
>> Dave (25:40):
Yes.
>> Julianna (25:40):
So brimming with mouth watering stone fruit aromas
and a juicy hop profile. Ghost Haze is the perfect
choice when you feel like ghosting on booze for
the night, but not on flavor. Pairs perfectly with
everything beer usually does and then some. So
it's less than 0.5% and they don't tell you what
(26:02):
Hops. But they say that it's stone fruit juicy
hops and it has a refreshing finish.
>> Dave (26:09):
H. It's nice. Um, I don't know if it's having
tried it just after the Sierra Nevada, but I, I
think it's good. It's not as good. I don't think
it's a, it's a different beer. Um, it's. I almost
(26:30):
like it as a changeup and it's weird. It's got a
lingering bitterness to it that I did not get from
the Sierra Nevada. So like, you know how some IPAs
you get more of that lingering sort of resin sort
of, um, pithy little bitterness? Mhm. I get that
(26:53):
from this one. It's not like necessarily a drying
finish, but it's, it's got this kind of lingering
sort of a little bite to it, which I, I can
appreciate that in a certain way, you know.
>> Julianna (27:06):
Oh yeah, yeah, totally.
>> Dave (27:08):
If you've ever put a hot pellet in your mouth,
you'll know what I'm talking about.
>> Julianna (27:12):
Oh. I mean, ooh.
>> Dave (27:15):
And if you haven't, go get one and do it today.
Right now while we're sitting here.
>> Julianna (27:21):
Oh man.
>> Dave (27:23):
Yeah. No, I don't know. What do you think about
this beer though, as far as this?
>> Julianna (27:28):
Okay. And again, coming off of Lagunitas and
Sierra Nevada and then coming to this, it is a
slightly. Little bit of a letdown. However, I
think it's still very reasonable
>> Dave (27:44):
if this is, if this is the option you had, like if
you didn't have the others in there. I think this
is, you could hop, uh, head. You could totally get
into this beer.
>> Julianna (27:55):
Yeah.
>> Dave (27:56):
You know, yeah, this is a solid thing. You go out
with your buddies or whatever and you're, you
know, maybe you're the designated driver or you're
just not feeling it on the alcohol right now or
you know, it's lit and you're like, jesus, hold my
beer.
>> Julianna (28:12):
Sure.
>> Dave (28:12):
Then you can drink this. And I think you would
enjoy it. I would definitely pair it with some
food, you know, some pizza wings or something like
that. I think, I think it'd be great for that.
>> Julianna (28:24):
Well, and I wonder now that you say that with
like, you know, pizza and food, with some of these
non alcoholic beers that have a uh, little hop
pungency, for lack of a better word. That's,
that's a little unbalanced, maybe having food.
>> Dave (28:41):
Yeah. Like we're just sitting here drinking these
things, right?
>> Julianna (28:44):
Well, ha. We'll balance everything out.
>> Dave (28:46):
Yeah. I think most people are just going to sit
and pound A six pack of non alcoholic ipa.
>> Julianna (28:51):
Yeah.
>> Dave (28:51):
Fair, you know, or maybe you will. I don't know.
I'm not going to judge.
>> Julianna (28:54):
Sure, sure.
>> Dave (28:55):
Just don't do it. Pinky up.
>> Julianna (28:58):
Yeah. Yeah. Okay, so what do you want to rate this
one? A three? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And I think the
more that I drink these and the more that I kind
of like wrap my head around the fact that this is
(29:18):
non alcoholic, the food pairings.
>> Dave (29:23):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (29:23):
Will help maybe for any sharpness that you would
otherwise get, if that makes any sense.
>> Dave (29:28):
Absolutely. I think it definitely would sort of
help you. But you could drink these by themselves
too.
>> Julianna (29:34):
Okay. To be continued. Welcome back, everyone. So
today's episode has been about non alcoholic beer.
We've been trying a decent amount of them today.
>> Dave (29:50):
Yes.
>> Julianna (29:51):
And we're still talking. How cool is that?
>> Announcer (29:54):
Too much information.
>> Julianna (29:56):
Oh, Reverend Mark, I miss you. Okay, um, let's
talk about the next one. And the next one is from
the Boston Beer Company. Woohoo.
>> Dave (30:10):
Sam Adams, Just the Haze.
>> Julianna (30:13):
Yes, Sam Adams, Just the haze. Hazy IPA. Non
alcoholic, less than 0.5% ABV hopped with Citra
mosaic, Sabro and Cascade hops. And then also, um,
the malts on this is the Sam Adams two row pale
(30:34):
malt blend. White wheat and golden naked oats.
>> Dave (30:44):
This tastes, This tastes like, uh. I don't know if
it's turnt or it's almost just like, uh, if. If
(31:10):
you had wet grain and you let it sit out too long
and then it starts to mold a little bit or sour a
little bit. There's. There's some of that in
there. I don't know. It's just this weird kind of
(31:30):
sickly sweet kind of oddness that I can't
understand.
>> Julianna (31:34):
Well, that's interesting that you say that because
they have won many awards for this Just the haze
non alcoholic IPA. Um, sure. So in 2022 and 2023,
I guess when this must have come out, like around
that time, the World Beer Awards gave them gold,
(31:58):
the World Beer cup gave them silver, GABF gave
them gold in 2022, and the world Beer Awards gave
them silver.
>> Dave (32:09):
So, you know.
>> Julianna (32:12):
Okay, there's that. Um, but. Oh, okay. To be fair,
though, our relationship with Sam Adams has been
kind of like up and down over the years.
>> Dave (32:24):
Like a lot of their beers other than Boston Lager,
I, um, I just don't like.
>> Julianna (32:29):
Right. I mean, there's been a couple of like,
seasonals that like, I remember liking the cold
snap, you know, and stuff. Some of those.
>> Dave (32:38):
That was not great, that porch swinging, porch
swing. Beer or something. It was like a lemon
shandy or something.
>> Julianna (32:46):
Yeah, that was a little.
>> Dave (32:47):
That's kind of gross.
>> Julianna (32:48):
That was a little, um, air freshener.
>> Dave (32:52):
You can't keep up with Leinenkugel. You're not,
you know, not trying.
>> Julianna (32:55):
That's funny.
>> Dave (32:57):
I don't know. I mean, maybe, you know, again,
like, as you pointed out, like, we started with
these beers not quite at refrigerator temp. Um, so
we're tasting every. Like, every. Literally
everything comes out when you drink a beer at this
temperature.
>> Julianna (33:12):
Yeah, true.
>> Dave (33:13):
And so maybe if it was cold and it was just
compressing some of these flavors down a little
bit, it might be better. But, you know, if that's
the case, then you better drink it cold.
>> Julianna (33:26):
Fair.
>> Dave (33:27):
Because it's gonna get turned.
>> Julianna (33:29):
It may.
>> Dave (33:30):
And I'm gonna keep saying turned.
>> Julianna (33:31):
You are. You are. Okay, so maybe this isn't the.
The very, you know, best. But it's not. It's not
bad. The good mouth feel, right? The mouth feel on
it is really good. And again, maybe if it was
colder.
>> Dave (33:45):
Yeah. Uh, I think the oats and the. The wheat help
with the mouth feel. I think the. The haze on it
looks. I think it looks great. It smelled really
good. I just got a. Like, a little weird flavor.
I. I don't know. If I had another can of it, maybe
I would taste something different. But this one
just kind of.
>> Julianna (34:02):
I don't know. Yeah, just kind of. Meh.
>> Dave (34:04):
I don't know.
>> Julianna (34:04):
Okay. M. All right. And we're going to rate this
one a. Ah, three. Yeah, three. Okay, now let's
move on to best day brewing.
>> Dave (34:16):
Best day. Day. Today is the best day.
>> Julianna (34:20):
Uh, brood for the doers, the surfers, the
climbers, the early risers, free drivers, chiefs,
gardeners, dancers, oyster farmers, dreamers,
painters, builders, mothers, fathers, runners,
hikers, walkers, makers, ranchers, nurses,
(34:42):
woodworkers, teachers, skiers. Okay, I get the.
>> Dave (34:45):
That's a lot of people.
>> Julianna (34:46):
That's a lot of people that they root for. I mean,
good for them.
>> Dave (34:48):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (34:49):
So the hazy IPA has a rich, fruity aroma that is
followed by round and juicy tropical fruit flavors
that fill the palette, leading to a subtle
bitterness on the finish. And it pairs well with
surf mountains and barbecues. How cute.
>> Dave (35:09):
Clever.
>> Julianna (35:10):
They're very clever.
>> Dave (35:11):
Very clever.
>> Julianna (35:12):
Very clever. And, um. Yeah. So what do you think
of this one?
>> Dave (35:17):
I think most of what they said was true. I think
it's got the nice aroma. Um, it is definitely
hazy. It is a little haze to it. Mouth feels
pretty good. Got a little creaminess to it. It
does yeah, not too thin. Flavor is pretty good.
(35:38):
Um, got a little fruitiness. Uh, I think it jumps
right into the bitter back end pretty quick. It's
not a lot of in the middle, but again, you know,
um, I think if we were drinking this ice cold, had
some food with it, I think that would be a
(35:59):
different experience. So I think it's a good beer.
You know, I'll tell you one thing about some of
these non alcoholic beers. That's a little bit of
a, uh, thing to me is a lot of them are pretty
pricey. You know, a lot of these NA beers cost as
much or more than beers with actual alcohol. And
so there's definitely a choice that has to be
(36:22):
made.
>> Julianna (36:23):
Yeah.
>> Dave (36:24):
On some of these beers.
>> Julianna (36:25):
Yeah. Yeah. And I, uh, I, uh, you know, and is
part of that. I don't know, I'm being kind of
>> Dave (36:32):
weird here, but we would expect nothing less.
>> Julianna (36:36):
Thank you. But is it really that expensive to make
a non alcoholic beer?
>> Dave (36:42):
So. I know. Um, I can't remember which one of
these it was. Maybe Sierra Nevada. They brew it
and then they have to take the alcohol out, so.
>> Julianna (36:52):
Okay.
>> Dave (36:52):
So there's an extra step. I don't know what we
want to
>> Julianna (36:56):
rate this one a three.
>> Dave (36:57):
Yeah, I think it was a solid three.
>> Julianna (36:59):
Okay. Last but not least is the Deschutes Black
Butte. Non alcoholic porter. Yes. Chocolate, uh,
coffee malts and cascade, uh, and Tet Nang Hops.
>> Dave (37:17):
The smells great.
>> Julianna (37:20):
Okay.
>> Dave (37:20):
Aroma is chocolate coffee. I mean, it's so on
point. This is like the regular Black Butte.
Smells just like it to me.
>> Julianna (37:28):
And the mouth feel is like very porter.
>> Dave (37:31):
It's good.
>> Julianna (37:32):
Yeah.
>> Dave (37:33):
Not super thick, not like a stout or anything, but
nice flavors. Pretty. Pretty spot on. This is.
This is good. It's a great step away from these
hazy IPAs too.
>> Julianna (37:44):
Yeah, it is. Because you're not getting the, um,
the hop burn or sharpness.
>> Dave (37:50):
Yeah.
>> Julianna (37:51):
But you're getting like really lovely roasted
malts and yeah, this, this could be the fall
rotation. Non alcoholic.
>> Dave (37:59):
This is the one that'll trick you. This tastes
just like a porter.
>> Julianna (38:02):
It does, right? Well, this one's a five for sure.
Gosh. Wow. Well, what a great episode. I mean, and
to end on this, like, high note of the couple
really solid beers, man. Yeah. I mean, it'll help
you get through lent or any non alcoholic phase in
(38:25):
your life. Yeah.
>> Dave (38:26):
Court ordered, you know, kind of thing or
whatever.
>> Announcer (38:30):
Okay.
>> Julianna (38:30):
M. Good old boy. Dave. Thanks for being here.
>> Dave (38:32):
Hey, thanks for letting me be here again.
>> Julianna (38:34):
You're welcome. You're welcome.
>> Dave (38:36):
I like this.
