So that number to call seven onethree two one two five eight seven four,
and I'll see what I can doto help you out here on Texas
Home Improvement, your total home improvementsource. This portion of Texas Home Improvement
is made possible by sunburst shutters. All right, let's start with an email

(03:19):
question. This came in from Deanand Houston. He says, I know
your company doesn't install radiant barriers, but I have a question for you before
I have it installed, to makesure I'm getting the right product. So
I've read that you can install onebarrier on the roof rafters inside the attic
by stavement to the rafters, andthen there's another barrier that you can be

(03:43):
installed by laying it on the ceilingjoists on the attic floor, which is
best for our Houston heat. Yourcompany gave me a company name to buy
the product from energy Q. Hisbarrier product you lay on the attic floor.
Thanks for answering my question. Well, I will tell you I have

(04:04):
been using energy q radiant barrier fortwenty years now, and I lay it
on the attic floor on top ofany existing insulation I have Now my personal
house. I have sections of mypersonal house that have no insulation, just
the radiant barrier. And the waythat radiant barrier works is it stops the

(04:30):
heat transfer. So yeah, whereyou've got just a little bit of insulation,
it allows that insulation to work better. Where you have no insulation,
it just stops the heat and allowsstill allows your air conditioning system to work
better. When you put the radiantbarrier on the roof rafters, it is

(04:53):
helping the block heat that gets intothe attic. Now that's not saying it's
going to eliminate the heat, becausethere's nothing there to offset the temperature,
but it will help with the heatin the attic. Where the radiant barrier
on the attic floor has the assistanceof the air conditioning system on the other

(05:15):
side of the sheet rock. Youknow, it just energy savings wise and
keeping your house more comfortable. Theone on the attic floor from my money
works best. Now you'll hear somepeople say, oh yeah, but it's
going to get dust on it,not work. I don't know. Like
I said, I've had mine downfor twenty years, still working great.

(05:38):
So I think we can pretty muchdebunk that theory. If you're interested,
Energy Q is available from energy thenthe letter Q dot com. Of course,
you can go to thhipro dot comand we've got a link to them,
or you can call them at oneeight hundred nine hundred six two twenty

(06:00):
and they can help you that way. They're at Energy Q Radiant Barrier.
Anyways, you got a question sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four. That's seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. And
I'll see what I can do tohelp you out here on Texas home improvement.

(06:23):
So Woodrow out of Dallas sent anemail and he says, I argue
talk AC last weekend and your detailsare similar to mine, three thousand square
foot home. Don't know what thetonnage on the AC is. Unknown.
Second unit it is my wife andme, I have just under three thousand

(06:48):
square foot a single five ton trainunit, and it simply has to run
all the time. I've had estimatesfor twenty thousand put in a new two
and a half ton unit to separatea couple of bedrooms on that new unit.
I also have an estimate from Miloto add insulation in the attic.

(07:11):
I have also had an eleven thousandestimate to add zoning for daytime nighttime redirection
of air. And then I hearyour show about the radiant barrier. I
just don't know what is the bestmoney to spend chasing a more comfortable temperature.
Any suggestions, Well, my firstquestion would be is the AC keeping

(07:38):
up temperature wise in your home?Because depending on how much insulation you have,
and such a five ton maybe bigenough for you. So that's gonna
be my first question. And youknow, changing insulation, adding radiant barriers,
all of this goes into the calculationfor sizing an AC properly. So

(08:05):
honestly, I don't know how muchinsulation you have at this point. If
you have at least, say sixto eight inches, I would probably look
at putting the radiant barrier over theinsulation first before I started spending all kinds
of money on a new AC.I would also have what's called a manual

(08:31):
J or heat load calculation done toverify the size air conditioning system you need
for your home. You know, and if you're marginal, then the insulation,
radiant, barriers and all that kindof stuff will make the difference whether
you need to add another AC unitor not. But you know, if
the house has been there for along time and was doing fine up until

(08:56):
we had this triple digit heat wave, I would tend to not add another
system, rather just work with whatyou've got and like I said, make
your home a little more energy efficient, and that I think will take care
of your issues now, because it'snot just the attic, it's the walls

(09:18):
as well. The highest R valueunless you've got foam in the walls that
you're going to get out of.Other types of insulation is typically are thirteen
and USA Insulation can inject foam intothe walls of an existing home, raising
that to like R twenty four,R twenty six, something in that range.

(09:41):
That will help with your AC system. The windows. Everything goes into
the calculation of what size units youneed so that that's where I would begin.
But on face value of this,I'm thinking the radiant barriers probably going
to be the way to go again. Her number seven one, three,

(10:01):
two, one, two, fiveeight seven four. Let's head out to
Katie and Jason. Welcome to TexasHome Improvement. How can I help you?
You gotta pot them up? Herewe go, Jason? You there?
Yes, yes, sir, Yeah, okay, I know it's really

(10:22):
hot. I did. I calledyou a hear go about humifier? I
got one. I finally got one. Hey, if you look in my
house, I got the radiant barrier. I got thirteen inches. I forgot
who it was that came out anddid it when you called the last time
about a year ago, had himcome out and put an addict buddy on
two. All right, I justdidn't get the fans. I'm thinking about
getting those solar fans. What doyou think about that? What do you

(10:46):
have a ventilation? Now? Ijust did just what's in there? Those
air ducks and everything. You know, that's all I got. You do?
You don't have addic ventilation at all? No, I got addict ventilation.
Yes, my eaves are good andeverything like that. You know my
eaves I have good eaves and thewhat do you call there on top that

(11:07):
spins and everything. It's it's goodup there. Okay, So what are
you gonna do with the solar fan? Then? Well, Jed, I
just guess called down the attic.Huh. If you ridge fence, that
is the best way to cool it. Dow yea. So two years ago
I got the I got a thirtyyear old roof, and he put new

(11:28):
ridge fence up there. Okay, you know then, but then any money
on an attic fan, because ifyou put in an attic fan, you
would have to close up the ridgefence. Okay, Well I don't want
to do that. My question isattic Okay. If you go inside my
house, it's a long halmway andit used to the right. It seeds
to the right. That's where myreturn area is. Okay, then it

(11:52):
kills down. That's that's all myliving room and everything, big huge living
room. Where do you think Ishould put that dehumifier because in the day
that gets hot, you know, because I have no diffusers in the hall
whatsoever. Okay, even have themwithin ten feet away from the return air,
you know, So where should Iput that humifier? Lately it has

(12:13):
been running. It has been kickingit down for fifty two all the way
down to thirty five at night, and I can't feel it's it's more crisper
in my house. Yeah. Well, and that's gotten actually lower than that's
actually getting lower than you'd want. And I'm gonna put you on hold because
i gotta take a quick break andI'll come right back to you. Let's

(12:35):
talk about Sunburst shutters. The bestselling plantation shutters in America are Pollywood shutters

eighty one fifty, or just goto thhipro dot com and click on the
link for Sunburst Shutters. Do Westair Conditioning. You know, when you're

(13:37):
having an air conditioning problems, that'snot something you want to put up with
very long, especially in this heat. That's the reason I want you to
call my company, Do West airConditioning. We can come out and service
any make of air conditioning system. And if you need to finance, some
repairs are a little bit above whatyou want to spend right now, not
a problem. We've got some greatfinancing of you need a new system,

(14:01):
we got financing for that as well. When you want the best, you
call due West. And keep inmind, when we're servicing that unit,
we're not just you know, sprayingoff the coils outside and stuff and saying
hey, it's good to go.We're checking the capacitors. We're taking the
outside unit apart and cleaning it.We're pulling the fan motors out and cleaning

(14:24):
them and checking to make sure thatit's not leaking oil or if it needs
oil it's all being addressed. That'swhy they say, when you want the
best called due West, some placesput up with dishonest, corrupt contractors.
Don't try that. Here here's morewith Jim dot on Texas Home Improvement.

(14:48):
Hey, welcome back to Texas HomeImprovement. This portion of Texas Home Improvement
is made possible by Texas Remodeled TeamWindows Division. You need replacement windows,
you talk to the folks at TexasRemodel Team again. If you've got a
home improvement question seven one three, two, one two, five eight seven

(15:09):
four talking with Jason and Katie abouta deshumidifier. And I'm assuming this is
a portable dehumidifier. Correct, Yes, it's portable one. I got the
one with the pump, so I'mdraining it back into the kitchen sinks.
Oh, it really doesn't matter thatmuch where you put it, because when
your AC system is running, it'scirculating the air in the house and we'll

(15:33):
be circulating that the humidity around aswell. So as far as where you
place it, it really isn't allthat critical. I mean, I'd probably
try to put as near the middleof the house where you're not closing doors,
so you've got decent air flow toit. I will caution you though,

(15:54):
that you want to be careful thatyou're not trying to bring the humidity
levels too low. Not that it'sgoing to cause any damage, but it
will start making your skin uncomfortable.Typically, we like humidity levels that you're
looking for are usually going to bein that you know, fifty sixty percent
range. If you get down belowthe forty you're getting so dry that that's

(16:18):
going to dry your skin out.I got the nest system and it does
the loss of gout and is fortyeight percent. Is the human human the
fire in my house, that's actuallya very good humidity level. Yes,
so well, my my compressor istwenty eight years no, twenty five years

(16:41):
old. I have the guys comeout there and take a look. Not
going with there's nothing worth it wrongwith it right now. But in that
day it just gets hot. Itgets down to eighty and then it takes
a long time to get going, you know, go back, and I
got single pane windows. I knowI need to hit the up and everything,
but and so hopefully can last, you know, But all right,

(17:07):
I'll put it where the we're alever right now because it seems like it's
working out. Okay, okay, all right, thank you, thank you
very much. Yet you take careand again our number seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four. Let's head out to Webster. Tiffany,

(17:29):
this is Jim. How can Ihelp you? Hi, Jim,
this is Tiffany Marshall. I'm callingfrom the clear Lake area and my husband
and I are about to have abig gabled patio put on the back of
our house. And of course wewant that just to be an extension of
more living space, but we wantit to be as cool as possible.

(17:51):
So I've heard, yes, doradiant barrier, No, do insulation.
What would be the best thing tohave them install so that it is as
cool as possible when we hang outback there and it's open to outside,
so it's not going to be airconditioned space? Correct, right, correct,

(18:11):
radiant barrier, without question. Insulationwill do you absolutely no good.
Okay, So just radiant barrier, nothing else when they install it. Nope,
okay, that was absolutely the onlything I needed. Thank you so
much. You're welcome, you takecare, you two bybye, and look,

(18:33):
insulation is fine, I mean,we need it in our building.
We need it well, mostly becausebuilding codes require it nowadays. But radiant
barriers block the heat transfer. Ifyou use a foil type, it'll block
ninety five to ninety seven percent ofthe heat transfer. I personally like using
energy Q radiant barriers, have usedit for twenty years plus. I mean,

(18:59):
great product. But insulation, whatit does is it gives you that
buffer zone between cool air and hotair. And it doesn't matter if you're
air conditioning or heating. It's thatbuffer zone. The higher the R value,
the thicker the insulation, the beerthe buffer zone that can have the

(19:21):
battle for heat and cold domination. When you put insulation in an area that
is unair conditioned, what will tendto happen is it heats up and then
in the evening when things cool off, it's releasing that heat. And so
when you're ready for it to cooloff and not be hot any longer,

(19:44):
here's this insulation releasing the heat keepingit hot under your patio or in the
garage or wherever else you've tried putinto the insulation that's not heated and cooled
space, any place that's not heatingand cooled. Use a radiant barrier like
in a metal shop building. It'lldrop the temperature ten to fifteen degrees and

(20:06):
make it extremely comfortable. It'll dothe same under a patio cover that way,
and you know so that is absolutelythe way to go. Got a
question seven one three two one twofive eight seven four. Any home improvement
question you have? Seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four.

(20:29):
We're getting ready to take a breakfor news, traffic and weather. We'll

can I help you today? Hello? Stephen, that sounds like he's potted

(23:52):
up, So I'm gonna put himon hold. We'll see if we can
get him back on the line, and then we will hold a conversation with
him. Here, got a questionseven one three two one two five eight
seven four, And I'll see whatI can do to help you out here
on Texas Home Improvement your Total HomeImprovement source at seven one three one two

(24:17):
five eight seven four. Is Stephenready to go? Okay? Well we'll
let him go then, and let'ssee. Reginald out of pear Land says,
I saw your foundation watering on YouTube. It is very informative. I

(24:38):
live in Pearland, Texas, rightoutside from Houston. Yeah, I used
to live in pear Land. Iknow where it's at. At my house,
I haven't watered for some time, and I see about an inch or
less separation from house to the dirtgrass line, and I see some small
cracks on my backyard patio cement whichlooked like someone dug a seven inch trench

(25:03):
around it. I just bought everythingyou suggested. I'm starting with a one
hundred foot round socer hose to goto the longest distance around my house via
the y splitter, and the otherdistance fifty foot from the other side of
that why splitter, for a totalof one hundred and fifty foot. Here

(25:25):
are my questions. If one hundredand fifty foot is not enough, can
I use the other faucet to starta new run? Do I have to
make a perfect square with my socerhose around the square on my patio cement
or can I just run the socerhose across it to save some hose footage?

(25:48):
Oh? Okay, foot Let's startthese one at a time. Here,
If one hundred and fifty foot's notenough, just add another hose onto
it. You're not limited to justthe one hole length. Can you put
it on the other side and theother hose bib? You absolutely can,
But then you got to buy anothertimer and all the other stuff. So
typically you're good to just add tothe hose. You can typically get away

(26:12):
with about two hundred foot in eachdirection from your timer and your y.
So if that helps you out withthat, let's see as far as making
a perfect square or crossing the patio, go around the patio. You don't

(26:34):
want to go across it because thesoaker holes will act as a natural moisture
barrier, or the concrete rather actsas a natural moisture barrier, and it'll
hold the moisture in underneath it.But if you don't go all the way
around it, you're not getting themoisture under it, and it'll help maintain
that patio as well. So youdefinitely want to go around the patio.

(26:56):
At the front of my house, there is some dirt by the foundation about
eight inches wide and twenty foot long. The dirt separation is visible there as
well. My concern is that eightinch wide is shorter than the sober host
distance of your suggested twelve to eighteeninches. Do I put sober hose there

(27:18):
anyway, or just put anything there? Look, you can put it in
there. I mean the twelve toeighteen inches is the suggestion. You just
don't want the water right up againstthe foundation because like you're seeing right now,
with the dryness you get the avoidand even watering, you're still gonna

(27:38):
get some void like that. Andif you've got the Socer hose there where
the void is, it can startwashing soil material away and cause you additional
problems. So you keep it away, so you get a moisture ring around
the foundation to try to close thatup. But you know, if all
you can get it away is theeight inches, that's fine. Go go

(27:59):
ahead and go with it is notgoing to be a problem for you.
H da da Okay. Fourth one, I will probably have to place the
Sokra hose across the driveway. Willit hurt the half inched over hose if
the car runs over it. Itwill over time, And a lot of
people don't realize this, but alot of those Sokra hoses are old ground

(28:21):
up tires. But yeah, whatwill happen is the socer holes by being
crushed that way time after time, especially in the heat that we've got it,
it'll start cracking on you. Andit'll do that rather rapidly. Typically,
what I tell you to do isterminate on both sides of the driveway.

(28:41):
If you have extra hosts, justturn and run it down the sides
of the driveway because it'll help maintainthe driveway as well. So I know
a lot of times we want totry to go across to save on the
way the lines run, but sometimesit's not possible. And then lastly,

(29:02):
someone told me that I don't needthe twenty psi pressure regulator. I purchased
one. Anyway, what happens ifI don't use it? Well, the
whole purpose of that pressure regulator iswith regular soaker hoses, you get a
lot of water at the beginning andhardly anything at the end. City pressure

(29:22):
comes in at fifty to eighty psi, and that's that pressure at the beginning
that gives you the lot of watercoming out at the beginning. By putting
that pressure regulator on there, you'lldrop that city pressure down and it'll give
you a nice even water dispersal throughoutthe hose. Get rid of that little
plastic plug that's in there, that'sgot the little eighth inch hose a little

(29:45):
eighth inch hole in it, andthe pressure regulator takes the place of that
thing. That will water your foundationand minimize your foundation problems. We'll be
back with more Texas Home Improvement sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four. Let me talk to youabout Texas Remodel Team. You know,
if you're looking for replacement windows, you owe it to yourself to talk to

Also, when you want the best, you called due West. Welcome to
Texas summer, the only state whereyou get condensation on your butt from the
hot water in the toilet bowl. Here's Jim dot on home improvement. Hey,

(31:37):
welcome back to Texas home improvement.Seven one three, two, one
two, five, eight seven four. This portion of Texas home improvement is
made possible by Woodlands Water Restoration. And no, they're not a restoration company
for Woodlands Waters. They are forrestoring your house after disaster strikes. Oh,

(32:01):
let's see here. Seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four
Is it? Luisa? Lisa? How can I help you? Hey,
I have a question I've got.I'm in a rental house. They just
finally, after two and a halfweeks, are replacing the AC unit because

(32:23):
it wasn't cooling. But my problemis I have hot water coming out of
the cold taps all day long,it doesn't matter how long it runs,
And I'm just wondering, is theresomething that I can do? No,
Well, what do you got comingout of the hot water side hot or

(32:47):
is it the same temperature as thehot water hot and cold side? Are
they the same temperature? Or isa hot hotter than the cold side the
hots hotter? Well, I don'tknow. I haven't tried that, and
I'm asking for a very specific reason, because there are some systems out there

(33:08):
for recirculating hot water that ties backin and when it malfunctions, you can
get hot water coming out of bothsides, and so if it's the same
temperature on both sides, you've gota recirculating system that has gone bad.
If the cold side is cooler thanthe hot side, well then it's just

(33:32):
playing. The water that's running throughthe attic is getting heated up. Well,
I have I have galvinized steel pipesin the attic. They did come
in and put in all brand newinsulations, but it didn't seem to help
with this at all. Right now, at night, I have cold water,

(33:55):
but it's only during the day Ihave hot water. Okay, Well,
in that it is answering the question. Yes, if you left the
water run long enough, it wouldeventually turn cold because the water's traveling through
the ground and at that point itwould turn cold. But you just got
so much pipes in the attic thatit's acting like a solar water heater and

(34:16):
heating up your cold water lines. Is there anywhere I can insulate them?
You can, but the insulation reallywhat it's for is the cold to keep
them from freezing. It's just notgoing to do a whole lot to keep
them from heating up to when we'rerunning these kinds of temperatures we are right

(34:37):
now. Yeah, I mean I'verunning the water. I've filled the tub
twice and never got any warmer filledwhat twice the tub? Yeah, I
mean it ran for almost forty fiveminutes and never changed temperature. Well,
I'm not sure where it's picking upthe hot water from then, uh,

(35:00):
I mean, but it's you're basicallywhat's happening is you're running it through the
attic, which is probably extremely hotright now. It may not be probably
fending very well or something, andit's acting as a solar water heater.
So you basically have continuous hot wateruntil it cools off at night, and

(35:22):
then you know it's it's not doingit at that time. It's not a
whole heck of a lot you cando with that. Okay, but I
just thought maybe it would stand backtoo. Yep, all right, I
appreciate it. You bet take care, and you know, the longer the

(35:46):
run, the more likely you areto have that happen. If it's a
shorter run, you know, grantedit'll heat up, but as the cool
water starts going through, it coolsoff the pipe, it cools off the
insulation, and you don't have that. Shut the water off for five minutes
though, and turn it back on. It's going to be hot again.

(36:07):
And that's really what happens. Soyou know it. Like I said,
it's just like a solar water heater. You know, when they used to
build the old solar water heaters,it was just a big loop of pipe
up on the roof that zigzagged backand forth in a box that was painted
black in order to hold as muchheat on the pipes as possible. And

(36:31):
again our number seven one three, two, one two, five eight seven
four Ryan in Spring says, Ijust had some closet space built into the
attic adjacent to my upstairs room.It was not done properly, so I
need it fixed. Well, I'mnot sure what was done wrong, but

you? Jim? My garage iscompletely sheet rock as far as the walls

(40:37):
and also the ceiling. It's gota pull down ladder that goes up into
the attic above the garage where thewater eater and storage and all that stuff
is. Okay, that garage getsextremely hot in the summertime of churs like
right now. My question is,do you think it makes any sense to

(41:00):
prop the the pull down stairs?Uh? You know, prop it open
a little bit so that some ofthe hot air vents up and into the
attic portion of over the garage.Depends on how much ventilation you have up
there. There's really good ventilation, yes, but if you don't then you

(41:24):
could be dropping more heat into thegarage. I'm sure I could. Would
you say that again, I've missedit. If you've got really good ventilation
so that as the hot air rises, it can go up through and out
through the attic and out through theroof fence, then yes you can do
that. But if you don't havegood ventilation, you may drop more heat

(41:49):
into the garage out of the attic. Okay, I'll follow you. I'll
have to go up there and checkand see it. Kind of. I
think it's got it's got ridge vans, and so if you've got good ridge
vans up there, you would befine to profit open and let some of
the hot air rise up out ofthere. Okay, excellent, Okay,

(47:19):
KTRH. How can I help you? That's Jim. How are you today?
I'm good? How are you well? Much better than in the past.
I've had Due West come out andput a drip system around my house.
I completed that on Tuesday, okay, and that in that process they

(47:44):
put three yards of sand on thesouth side, which was the worst area
of losing earth under the foundation. And my question to you is when it
put the sand in, it endedup very close to my hearty plank on

(48:07):
that side of the house. Doesit make sense to pull that back away
from the hardy plank? And ifnot, what's your advice, Well,
it won't hurt the hardy plank atall. A hardy plank is a cement

(48:27):
based siding and so it doesn't rotand all that stuff that you don't need
to worry about that. Now,normally you want to have, though,
about three inches of foundations showing, and from what you just described, I'm
not sure that you're gonna have threeinches of foundation unless they dropped the hearty
siding down on your slab a littlebit. You know, what was the

(48:54):
reason for adding soil. The reasonfor being soil is that that area ended
up being a low spot and whenit rained, that's one of the reasons
that it created the issue with thewater flowing towards the foundation. Now,

(49:15):
I don't know what kind of sandthat is. It was nice and easy
to work with when they put itin, but after twenty four hours in
this heat, it it's very hardand I had removed some of the sand

(49:36):
very close to the foundation, abouttwo inches below the hardy plant. Does
that makes sense, Yes, it'snot it's not going to hurt anything at
all. No, Well, Iappreciate your healthfulness, and I'm looking forward
to the watering system to prevent anyadditional concerns with the foundation other than a

(50:08):
little drop over thirty years. Thatwas different when I had an engineer come
in and do a foundation check, which that side of the house and the
northwest side had dropped on the originalengineer report three quarters of an inch,

(50:30):
and the cornering yer engineer who lookedover the house and build all his measurements,
it had increased to point nine overthat time. So to keep it
going any further, that's why Iwanted the drip system to prevent that from

(50:50):
occurring. Okay, now, James, if you've got to move any more
of that soil that they put in, you don't do that. You call
the office and we'll have to makecome out and do it for you.
Okay. I I don't know quitewhat to say. I did intend to
clean up some of the lumps whichare very hard. You're not smooth.

(51:15):
I want to get him out ofthe way for my long mooing, so
I want to do dig grass. You will go ahead. You call my
office and we will have somebody comeout and take care of that, because
if we were if we were beingpaid to put soil out like that,
it should be smooth and ready togo. Alrighty, I thank you.

(51:37):
I'll do my contact to call andtalk to him. Thank you. Who
is your estimator? Uh, misterJoe Morris? Okay, okay, Now
he didn't have any anything to dowith anything but the measurements and point out

(51:58):
to issue. Yeah, and heprobably started dealing with the Jennifer and Nick
at that point, that is correct. Yeah, but Jennifer and Nick will
take care of you. Alrighty, thank you. You have a day,
you two. Thank you. He'scool. Oh I'm trying all right.
Seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four head to my hometown of

(52:24):
Pasadena, Jeff, How can Ihelp you? Oh? Yes, sir,
I was calling in with respect tothe gentleman from I believe it was
parallel in it was thinking about openingup is is attic doorway to relieve meat
out of his garage? Well he'slooking at cracking it a little bit.

(52:45):
Yeah, yeah, just I don'tknow. I'm not a professional. I'm
just a coming since guy. I'lltry to keep as much heat had that
attic as I can't because my ridgimentsor my warning birds are doing what they
and to keep it cool. I'mjust gonna open my garage doors and let
the air flow. I don't wantany more heat going in my attics than

(53:07):
I need it too, Just don'tmy opinion. Yeah, Well, if
the attic ventilation is doing what it'ssupposed to do, though, and he
has ridge vents, so ridge ventsthe number one way to release the heat
out of the attic. Hot airrises, it goes up, it goes
out, true, and it'll drawnew air coming in. Uh, it

(53:30):
really won't cause him a lot ofissues up in the attic area. And
that's that was the reason, asthough, being very specific, you got
to have good ventilation for that towork. If you don't have good ventilation,
check that. I don't have enoughfor interest to do ridge vents,

(53:50):
So I'll still burns. That's whatI'm saying. I just leave my garage
doors open and tell my neighbors keeparound my grudge. Yeah, okay,
all right, thank you very much. I enjoy your shoe. Thank you,
Jeff. You take care. Howabout but when it comes to attic

(54:13):
ventilation, my preferences are. Istart with a ridge vent. If I
can't do a ridge vent, thenI start taking a look at some type
of power vent, whether it besolar. It used to be I tell
you don't use electric power events, but they have cleared up most of the

(54:34):
problems they were having with power.I still prefer solar simply because why spend
money running electricity when a solar willtake care of it for you. As
far as ventilation, but then Igo to airhawks. My least favorite is
actually the whirly birds, which Iknow roofing contractors love to put them on,

(54:57):
but it's actual my least favorite asfar as add events to use on
a home. Got a home improvementquestion? Seven one three two one two
five eight seven four. That's sevenone three, two, one two five
eight seven four. Any home improvementquestion you have, Feel free to pick

(55:20):
up the phone, give me acall, and I'll see what I can
do to help you out here onTexas Home Improvement. Let me talk to
you about James Hardy siding, thebest siding on the planet, and we
were just talking about it. Withthe call, they're asking about the dirt.
You know. The nice thing aboutJames Hardy Siding is it. It
is cement based, so it doesn'tdeteriorate, it doesn't rot, holds paint

(55:44):
better than wood ever thought about. And you know peer and being blocking bay
or I'm sorry, blocking bass houses. For instance, if you need skirting
and you want continuous ventilation, youcan use the soft vents from James Hardy
Siding to skirt around a home.It can touch the soil and you don't

(56:04):
have to worry about it. ButI mean, when it comes to siding,
that is the number one upgrades youcan do to your home for curb
appeal. It's really it ranks upthere with re doing the kitchen as far
as home improvement projects that you'll getthe best return for your investment on it.
And let's face it, it's justgorgeous to look at. So whether

(56:30):
you want to do a lap siding, a stucco look, a wood shake
look, a vertical look, itdoesn't matter. James Hardy Siding has you
covered along with all the trim piecesto go with it. You want to
learn more about it, you justsimply go to thhipro dot com and click

Hey, welcome back to Texas HomeImprovements. Seven one three, two one
two five eight seven four. Let'shead to Houston and Francisco. How can
I help you today? I didafternoon, mister June. Thanks for taking

(58:46):
thanking my calm. Got a quickquestion for you. I have a rental
home that did foundation repairral dot probablyabout ten twelve years ago. Okay,
the years all around the house, only on the exterior, noting to do,
but they around the house, notingon the center of the house.

(59:07):
There wasn't one of your companies withsomebody else recommended by a friend life that
warranty and all the et cetera.Us I've noticed, especially with this drought,
more cracks. So I called themto come back to you know,
I thought it would be something thatthey'll have to adjust due to this drought.
But now he's telling me that theybecause of the way that the cracks

(59:30):
and I don't know whether that's actuallymy question. I don't know if the
way with the cracks, he saidthey're going towards the inside of the house,
and that to him, apparently it'sa sign that it's sinking on the
center of the house. Is thattrue or he's just trying to do more,
you know, getting more better thangetting a second part of a job,

(59:52):
I guess, or something that wasalready repaired before. Well, it's
definitely possible that the middle of thehouse is going down, especially if you've
got trees in the yard that havegotten bigger and with this drought, y're
drawing more moisture out from under themiddle of the house. The middle will
drop. Uh, when since hedid the house ten years ago, did

(01:00:13):
he not take elevation readings to beback and tell what's moving. That's another
and that's another thing. When theydid the first elevation movings, they took
the center point, the center ofthe house. Uh. This time that
he came back, he took theelevations from the part that we know it's
dropping, which is a back ofthe house. So he told me the

(01:00:37):
back of the house was supposed tobe the hero. Towards the center of
the house, there's about almost threequarters of an inch maybe an inch on
some areas, and on the frontof the house, it's uh, you
know, an inch and next quarteror so. So he said that the
because there's a bye on the back. He said that that's also another reason
why the house is moving towards theback and the front. It's not.

(01:01:00):
But he did not take the elevationsfrom the same point as the previews when
they did the foundation repair. Itkind of went from a different point and
not the exact point. So allmy daughter on my head, it's if
you would have done it from thecenter, we're talking about maybe an inch
to the front plus and maybe endalmost an inch to the negative on the

(01:01:22):
back. So now that he's sayingit's he's doing the elevations from the back.
So he said that the center isalmost one inch, but the front
is two inches. So he saysthat if he raises the back, which
I thought that was what needed tobe done, he'd say, that almost
makes like a pool where you havethe back up, the front up,

(01:01:43):
and the center down. Right,So on the readings, the center is
currently lower than the back. Soright, no, actually it's a little
bit higher. Okay, that that'swhat I thought you were saying, is
the middle is the front is highhigher than the middle, But the middle

(01:02:04):
is higher than the back of thehouse. Correct, correct, correct,
yes, sir, okay, Ihave not looked at the house, so
I have to put this covee gyardout that. You know, a house
isn't tabletop level to begin with whenit's originally built. But if the middle
is still higher than the back,it does sound like he's got room to
make adjustments. If the cracking ison the outside walls. Now, if

(01:02:29):
the cracking is on the inside interiorwalls, you know where it's six eight
feet in from the outside, thenyes, it could be interior settlement.
What are your doors doing around thehouse inside? See, the doors are
actually doing fine, but there islike on the master bedroom, there's a
big crack where the hinges are,and the crack goes towards the pointing towards

(01:02:54):
the center of the house. Sothat's why he's telling me that that's a
sign that the center of the sasorts dropping. He said it vould have
been the outside. The cracks willbe on opposite side, going towards the
outside of the house. And that'son the interior walls. I'm not talking
about experio walls or the serial walls. Actually I don't see anything except for

(01:03:15):
one crack on the brief and it'sbut you know, he's telling me the
same thing that the cracks started onthe bottom and he's working to the inside.
But I don't know whether you know. The crack doesn't really tell you
where it begins. It's just allacross. So it's all just an indication.

(01:03:36):
And taking the elevation readings, lookingat the doors, the cracks and
all that stuff is all just tohelp put the puzzle together. It is
possible that the middle has moved aswell as the back, and I will,
I will, I'll tell you this. You can call my office and
have one of my guys come outand take elevations. It doesn't cost anything,

(01:03:58):
and we can compare it if you'vegot a copy of the old set
to see what's moved and how much, because where you take the reference really
isn't all that critical. You cancompare the notes. In other words,
if the front left corner was aminus one point two and the front right
corner was a minus one, thatwas a two tents difference, and now

(01:04:23):
it's it's uh, say, twopoint four and two point six. It's
still a two tense difference. Soyou got to put all the puzzle pieces
together. But call the office atDue West. We'll come out take a
look, and then you got asecond opinion to go back to negotiate.

(01:04:45):
I'm kind of feeling that he's tryingto do He's trying to do sixty more
peters on the center of the home. So we're talking about nout breaking and
all that. Oh no, don'tdo that tunnel tunnel underneath it if it
needs interior. And I hate todo this, but I've got to take
a break for news, traffic andweather. But yeah, I call the

(01:05:06):
office when we'd be more happy totake a look at it. Let's talk
about American Standard Air. It's mychoice in air conditioning. It's nationally recognized

Welcome to Dutton Ranch. That's Dutton, Jim Dutton. Here he is with
Moore on Texas Home Improvement. Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvements.
Seven one three, two one twofive eight seven four. Any home improvement

(01:06:12):
question you have seven one three twoone two five eight seven four. And
you know when we went to breakthere, I was just mentioning tunneling for
foundation repair. Look, if youneed interior peers or the sewer pipes under
your home, don't jack hammer yourslab. Tunnel underneath it and do the

(01:06:35):
work that way. You know, you've got a home that's got a foundation
problem. Does it make sense toknock a bunch of holes in it to
fix it? You can tunnel underneath, do the pier work from underneath,
pick it up in the slab staysnice and monolithic that way. Now,
now I'm not saying that I don'tjack hammer slabs sometimes as well, Sometimes

(01:06:58):
it needs to be done that way. But in general, especially if the
house is occupied, you know, you don't have to move, You're able
to stay in your house as normal. It just doesn't make sense. And
you know a lot of times peoplethink, oh, well, the tunneling
is just too expensive. It's reallynot by the time you do the clean

(01:07:20):
up and redoing inside the house andmove out and move back in, because
you definitely don't want to be inthere while the jackhammering's taken place and while
the dirt's being dug and got allthese holes in there. It's not a
safe place to be. It's aconstruction zone. By the time you repair
all that stuff back, you couldhave paid for the tunneling and not had

(01:07:44):
to move. It just makes senseanyway. It's just my two cents on
it. Got a question seven onethree, two one two five eight seven
four heading out to the port blue, How can I help? Yeah,
man, I'm I'm good, I'mkicking. I got a few compliments.

(01:08:06):
By the way that regulator on thesoaker host that worked real good. And
uh, I'm glad you reminded uson the show to listen to take that
plug out because I went ahead andjust did that a little bit ago good.
And uh, another thing, Ineed to get you all over to

(01:08:28):
help me live. I talked toy'all once before about lifting my shed yep,
and I and I invented to jackwhere you only got a lift about
two and a half inches and andI'm gonna send the picture to Jay of
it what it looks like. Butit's rated for six thousand pounds. But
it's it's it's two and a halfinches, so you only got to dig

(01:08:50):
down to it and a half inches. Just got a duck bill I built
onto it. No ledge and juststicking up under there and dig down and
then lifted up, you know alittle little the time. So I want
you to check that out. Butanother thing, I had Jay and the
boys come in install a new fiveton unit because my old train that Fins

(01:09:15):
turned put in fifteen years ago,it's five ton it it it bit the
dust when I trouble shooted it.One of the legs went to ground and
mutral was good. But one ofthe legs nothing you can do about it.
And I checked the pigtail and everything. So I sure felt bad because

(01:09:38):
that unit was in good shape.Yep. So they put a new They
put a new unit in and they'llplant them and I like to slap south
stop plan them where you got anaccess door on both sides, which is
what Finch put in and trained don'tdon't make one anymore. But Jay was
got me one and and it's it'sit's quite a bigger so I couldn't use

(01:10:00):
the old planeums and uh so system. But I want to compliment Jay and
Although and Alex they were they camein at seven thirty in the morning and
they got done at eleven o'clock atnight. Jay told me, I'm gonna
nail this job and one day youwill not be hot. And uh you

(01:10:26):
took care of it. And aweek later, Although and Alex came back
and balanced the duck workups upstairs, and we kind of got it, you
know, pretty close to where itwas before. Probably what we should have
done was looked at where the andreally you can't go by that, but

(01:10:47):
where it was suggested before, youknow, to the back bedroom. And
that's where the issue, the onequestion I have, the one question.
I have the new unit paper workon it and everything says fifteens here,
but the yellow sticker says thirteen pointnine. And by the way, when
they came back, they also putabout two and a half pounds a refrigerant

(01:11:11):
in it, you know, andgot it. They also checked the balance
across the condenser, got that evenyou know, at about point eight to
one right in there, you know, and uh, I mean not the
condenser, the evaporator upstairs and gotthat all lined out and really did a
nice job. In fact, thecity inspector came by and said, man,

(01:11:34):
you've got a good job. Imean the way they leveled everything,
furnace and all that, very excellentjob. One question I at got,
okay, is the new the newcondenser outside got that yellow Joe Biden sticker
on it that says thirteen point nine, right, question is that a thirteen

(01:11:56):
point nine here? Or is thata fifteen? Should be a fifteen?
They've they've changed the ratings on thestuff. It started at the beginning,
at the beginning of this year itwas, and the labeling is different than
what the ratings are. Well, this this machine, the condens's name two

(01:12:20):
in twenty two December twenty two.Okay, so that's probably and I guess
where y'all had it had to putthat yellow sticker same thirteen point nine.
Also it only yeah, it's onlygot two blades on it, which I
thought was kind of weird. Butyou know, I'm the I'm the condenser

(01:12:44):
fan and not three. But thequestion I got is the other day I
forgot to turn the A C upto seventy seven degrees. I left it
at at seventy four. When Icame home, it was sitting there running
his butt off, And at seventyseven it wasn't you know, it didn't

(01:13:08):
take the house to seventy four. You know, it didn't leave it at
seventy four all day. It couldn'tkeep up. So and also I've noticed
the compressors got on the pipeline. We have those scroll compressors that we used
for injection. And the compressor soundslike it's searching a little bit. Is

(01:13:28):
that? I say, what thisnew compressor and set up? I mean,
the condenser coill is a lot bigger, probably a third of a size
bigger than the old XR thirteen thatI had. But the compressor sure looked
small down there, like a tunycan down there. Yeah, it's all

(01:13:50):
in the in the coils. Now, okay, So is that the old?
The old? Uh? Five times? If you set that thing at
seventy four, it's gonna go toseventy four. It'll stay. It doesn't
matter if it's a hundred degrees outside, it'll keep it at seventy four.

(01:14:11):
You like, Bill's gonna be somethingelse. But these new ones just don't
have the hump the old ones do. No, they should have they should
have the same umph. What didit go to when when you had it
said at that, Well, itwas at seventy four the old the old
machine. If if you forgot toturn it up to seventy seven or seventy

(01:14:35):
eight, and you know when youleft out for work in the morning,
sure it'd be seventy four when youcome in. And when Jay came over
to quote the job for me,I had two of those home depot window
units emergency you know ones, andI had those running noose Toshiba's I had

(01:14:56):
those running in was seventy eight whenhe quote, he said, wow,
you said, this hound's pretty coolfor you know participant, those two eight
thousand, eight thousand BT units. But when he had set on seventy four,
what did what did it go toduring the day? Seventy seven seventy
eight? Well, no, that'swhat you normally said it at you said

(01:15:20):
when you got home, though,it wasn't cooling it down to seventy four.
No. No, Usually when Ileave in the morning, I take
it from seventy four to seventy eight. That way. It ain't. But
you were saying the day you forgotto set it at seventy four, it
wasn't at seventy four when you gothome. No, it's seventy eight.

(01:15:43):
Okay, Well I would call andhave Jay come by and take a look
at it, just to check things. Okay, Now, I will tell
you when we've been hitting these, you know, one hundred and five hundred
and six temperature days, it's thesystem's going to struggle to keep up there
there, it's only so much thatthey can do to to cool down.

(01:16:06):
Uh. But if if don't like, like you've mentioned, one hundred degree
day, it should keep up.Yeah. Well that day it was ninety
eight degrees and they should have hadno over right. Usually you go,
you go by twenty two. ButI've done rule of thumb. There's twenty

(01:16:27):
two degrees. There's gonna be aone hundred degrees set at seventy eight that
day. Yeah, you know, that's that's what I do. Well,
colin out, he'll take a lookat it and see what's going on.
Okay, okay, but hey, eleven o'clock they stayed too, and he

(01:16:48):
got up there and helped started helpingthem at four thirty and then he brought
so there were four trucks parked infront of my house knocking that job out.
So maybe he was gonna get itin the day. That's what he
was gonna do. That's what I'mtalking about. So and by the way,
that although and Alex, that's future. I was proud of those boys.

(01:17:11):
I'd hire him on the pipeline ina minute. Good now, you
late Malone because I need him.Yeah, I know it, man,
and they and they really like workingfor you all, so yeah, and
they really respect Jay. I toldJay you need to look up. You
need to take care of those boyshens on every word you say, yep

(01:17:32):
o o. Well sir, andyou have a great appreciate what you do
at that rodeo. Thank you, sir. I have fun out there.

Let's jump into another call here,John in Texas City. How can I
help you? Hi? I'm lookingto build a new home up in New
Hampshire, of all places, butthis development it's built on top of an

(01:21:21):
old gravel pit, and I worryabout sinkholes and stuff like that, and
the builder he goes, no,it's fine. We did it the right
way, which I don't know whatthe right way is, but I just
wondered, you know what I should. It's been filled then for about ten
years now and there's about four homesthere currently, but it just scares me

(01:21:45):
that John. I'm gonna put youon hold for one second. I need
to take this quick break. Iwant to address this when I come back,
because it's gonna take more than asecond here to do. So I'm
gonna put John hold we'll be backwith more Texas home improvement. You know,
Ready Seal is far and away thebest product for staining a fence,
a deck, or any outdoor woodsurface. Ready Seal stain and sealer.

(01:22:11):
It can be applied to the wood. It soaks deep down into the wood
fibers, and it moisturizes the woodwith waterproofing oils and creates a flexible barrier
that keeps the moisture out. Plusit's goofproof. This is the simplest do
it yourself project you will ever find. You don't have to worry about runs,
laps or streets because as it soaksin, it spreads out and takes

(01:22:35):
care of all that. It canbe rolled on, brushed on, or
sprayed on, and it's gonna lastyears longer than comparable products. If you're
looking to protect a deck, adock, even decorative wood chairs and whatever,
take a look at ready Seal. It's available at the box stores,
at lumber yards, hardware stores, virtually any place that sells building material else,

(01:23:00):
or you can go to ready sealdot com for the store nearest you.
All right, You've heard me sayit for years. When it comes
to insulation, phone works best inthe walls, and when it comes to
putting foam into your existing walls, you need to call USA Insulation. They
have a proprietary non expansive foam theycan inject right into the walls of your

(01:23:23):
existing home and you're gonna get thehighest R value. It has a great
fire rating and cancels up to eightypercent of the noise from outside as well.
Call three four six two nine seventwenty eight hundred. That's three four
six two nine seven twenty eight hundredfor USA Insulation. If somebody tells you

(01:23:55):
you can't do it, tell themto kiss your crew bar. This is
Texas. We're Jim don You welcomeback to Texas Home Improvement. We're gonna
go back to John where we're talkingabout building the house up. Did you
say New Hampshire, New Hampshire correct? Yep. John. You got any

(01:24:15):
idea how deep that gravel pit was? No? I don't, but I
looked on Google Earth. You cango back in time and look at the
headlight images. It was a bigoperation. And uh, it's on a
hill like it's a sloping. Thewhole area is kind of sloping, But
I don't know how deep they dugto get that stuff out. Yeah,

(01:24:38):
typically they dig pretty deep. Yeah, and you know, I'm not sure
what they filled it in with, but I can tell you what. Typically
it's filled in with you don't wantto build on. Oh really most of
the time pits like that are usedas landfills and then they up them with

(01:25:00):
dirt later. Huh. Well,I talked to the guy or I through
email, but he said they didit the right way, that they didn't
put any organic material in there, like treat stumps and limbs and stuff like
that. But I don't know ifit's I wouldn't figure they're putting rock back
in there, because that's what theyjust dug out, you know what I

(01:25:23):
mean. And they're not going tofill it with usable dirt either, And
that's really they're normally land filled.Uh. And then, like I say,
it's topped off. Honestly, ifit truly was a land pit or
a rock pit like that, Iwould find another place to buy. Oh

(01:25:43):
it's so gorgeous. Oh my gosh, everyone's got five acres. It's the
perfect spot. And the guy saidtoo in the email that this year they've
had just a ton of rain andthere's no sinkholes anywhere, and my son
in law went up there because helives up that way. Go go,
go over and talk with locals, find out what's in there. If it

(01:26:04):
was a landfill run okay. AndI hate to do this, but I
am completely out of time for thisweek's show, so make sure you guys
join me again tomorrow starting at twoo'clock right here on seven forty ktr h.
Before we go, let's talk aboutWoodland's Water Restoration. You know when

And that is exactly what Woodland's WaterRestoration does. Call them at two eight
