Speaker 1 (00:00):
There are a lot of hungry people right now, with
the price of housing, food and gasoline going up and up.
Maybe you're lucky enough that you can still afford to
go to the grocery store, but not everyone is.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
If you want to help, there's an easy way to
do it. Just put some food in a bag, set
it at your mailbox. This weekend, it's National Association of
Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food Drive happening Saturday and
on the Coco News liveline. Spokesperson with the US Postal Service,
John Hyatt, thanks for joining us on Sandygo's Morning News.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
John, I am thrilled to be here to talk about
this great event.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Well, tell us a little bit how it works.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Well, it's really easy. Many areas, a customer might get
a bag in the mail from their letter carrier, and
you can just fill that bag up with non perishable
food items. That can be anything from canned foods, canned meats,
canned vegetables, pasta, rice, beans, all those types of things,
anything non perishable. Put that in that bag. Or you
(00:56):
could just use any regular bag that you have around
the house, an old shopping bag. I fill that up,
put it next to your mail slot and the carrier
while they're doing their rounds throughout the day on Saturday
May night, are going to pick that mail up and
take it back, so go to the local food bank.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
That is super cool. This hunger food drive happens this Saturday,
just put out by the mailbox. But is this an
annual event and if so, how has it been in
the past.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
It's been great. You know, it started back in nineteen
thirty or nineteen ninety three, so this is our thirty
fourth annual event and since it started, we've collected nearly
two billion pounds of food over all those three decades.
This isn't that amazing?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, it's feel bad for your back s having a
lift off.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
That's true.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Well, I was a letter carrier for eighteen years and
this was my favorite event of the year because you
get to collect food and you know it's going locally
to help your neighbors, your friends that need help locally,
and it's just a great thing all the time, and
it's a lot of fun. In the afternoon when we
come back to the stations, people are unloading. There's volunteers
that come in to help take the food off the
(02:01):
mail trucks put it in the hampers and send it
off to the food banks.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
We're talking to John Hyatt with the US Postal Service
about this weekend's food drive. The nicest thing about this, John,
is I know most people want to help, but they
don't always have the time or they can't take the
time to go deliver food to the food bank. But
this opportunity is for them to help, and you guys
do all the work.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
That's right. Yeah, it's a great thing. You know, we
just want to remind people, you know, be sure the
food's not expired. We can't take expired foods or unlabeled
foods or rusty cans, bulging canst to that kind of stuff.
So you know, if you're taking food out of the cupboard,
you make sure it's in good shape, it's labeled, and
it's non perishable, and we don't need a box of
(02:45):
ice cream in the truck melting away.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Very good point, John. Thank you so much for joining
us in good luck this weekend. I know it's heartwarming
and you're helping so many local people here in San
Diego County.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yes, thank you very much. And if people want more information,
they can go to any dot org and look up
the food drive there that has a lot of information.
The NLC is the National Association of Letter Carriers and
they're the ones that are sponsoring this for Stamp out Hunger,
and we're just really proud to be a big part
of our communities in this way.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Well, you should know that the weather this weekend is
going to be perfect for a food drive, so yes,
put the non perishable items out by your mailbox and
people like John will come pick it up. John, have
a great day.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Thanks you too as well, and thanks for taking us.
