A Lot of Sharks Coming to Your TV Screen This Week

It's Shark Week, and there's 20 new shark-related shows premiering through August 1st. Bret Burkhart and Veronica Carter spoke with explorer and journalist, Kinga Phillips, to find out more.

Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
How did this become such a thing, Shark Week?

Speaker 5 (00:33):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it has been around for thirty
eight years and people are just fascinated by sharks. It's
so wild, and every year I feel like it gets
bigger and people love sharks even more, which I love
to see.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, I agree, it's amazing.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
It's like we're terrified of them, so we must look
at them, you know.

Speaker 6 (00:52):
And I don't want to say embrace them, because I wouldn't,
but it was just like it's like gawking is what
we literally I wouldn't embrace one, but yeah, we love
to fear them. I guess I.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
Think that's exactly it. I think we figuratively embrace them.
We love watching them because You're right, I think people
are afraid of sharks. That's how I started. I watched
Jaws and became terrified of sharks, and then that fascination
kicked in and they are absolutely extraordinary. So people are
just in love with them and it's so cool to see.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
I totally agree with you.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
We're speaking with explorer and journalists King of Phillips, and
I will say that on Shark Week and after watching Jaws,
I would be scared to go in the pool, the
swimming pool. But aside from that, how important is Shark
Week when it comes to understanding sharks in a better way?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Because there's a lot we don't know about sharks.

Speaker 5 (01:44):
There is so much that we are still learning about sharks,
and I think Shark Week does such a great job
of really walking that balance between being entertaining and being educational.
You know, you're going to watch these twenty shows and
you're going to have so much fun and you're going
to have like edge of your seat moments, but you're
also going to learn so much about the science of sharks.
And when we're out there working on Shark Week, we

(02:04):
are doing real science. We are tagging, we are studying,
so we're always learning as well.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
So there are twenty shows.

Speaker 6 (02:12):
Give me a couple of your favorites out of all
of them that are coming up.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
Oh my goodness. There are such a variety of shows,
and I think they're great obviously. You know, we had
some shows premiering yesterday and they're exciting, and we have
celebrities and they're all about K pop. My show, What
Shark Attacked is kind of like Sharks CSI. We have
sharks all over the world that we are going to
be looking at, and so many different species from the
North Atlantic to Australia. I mean, we are everywhere and

every shark is represented. Not every I mean there's five
hundred species, but we got a lot of them in there.

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Yeah, and all of these titles are really intriguing to me.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
For all these episodes, where can people catch them?

Speaker 5 (02:52):
They are going to be on Discovery and on HBO Max,
so you've got some options to be able to watch.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
You know, I guess we should have this up, but
any of the shows filmed here in San Diego, because
we've got a lot of sharks.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
We do have a lot of sharks, and there are
some shows that are filmed off of the coast of
South coast, southern California, so right here off our coast.
I'm in Los Angeles, so both of us are just
right there next to the ocean, and we've got a
lot of big sharks out there and they are going
to be on Shark Week. They're making their premieres.
