Country.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Montessori School in Powway is hosting a ten k walk
and run on January thirtieth that benefits the Firefighter Cancer
Support Network and this is.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
An important month to highlight cancer and firefighters. And joining
us now on the Coco News Liveline is retired Vista
Firefighting captain an event organizer, Bob Stacy.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
Good morning, Bob, Hey, Good morning guys.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
So tell us a little bit about this. I mean,
we've all read the stories, we've all heard. You know
that there's such a danger when it comes to cancer
in firefighters.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Yeah, you bet so. I just a little intro. I
was a firefighter for thirty two years, my last twenty seven.
We're worth the city of Visa, and I just I
just love my job, being a member of a team,
serving the community. And it was it was I just

(00:54):
felt like I was doing something every day. But I
retired in twenty fourteen and in two thousand, in nineteen,
I was diagnosed with cancer. And little did I know then,
but cancer is the leading cops of firefighter deaths in
the industry. For firefighters, and two thirds of the firefighters
today we'll be facing some sort of cancer tomorrow. And

(01:18):
that's why I'm here to talk about the walk, Bob.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
That is remarkable. How are you doing now? Before we
get the details on the important walk and run?

Speaker 4 (01:27):
But yeah, they told me, I'm curious.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Well that's amazing.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Congratulations Yeah, ring that bell as they say, yeah, you know.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
What I did. I went through twenty threetments of proton
beam radiation and it was a very successful program. And
I'm doing well today six years later.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Nice, But unfortunately other firefighters haven't ever recovered from cancer
they got on the job.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
That's correct, How that's correct?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
How important is the Firefighter Cancer Support Network?

Speaker 1 (02:03):
What does it do to help?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah? Sure? So the Firefighter Cancer Support Network was opened
up in two thousand and five by a tooth by
a LA County firefighter who is self diagnosed with cancer.
And this group is a volunteer group and they do
a lot of good things, very very well. But the
two things that resonate with me are they provide badge

(02:28):
to badge support. So when a newly diagnosed firefighter calls
and asks for help, they're assigned to another firefighter who's
had a similar diagnosis, and that firefighter stays with that
firefighter and family throughout his journey and More importantly is
they also do research, they do education, and they also

(02:50):
do early screaming and detection programs and that saved life
this organization.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Wow, So if people want to participate paid in this
walk and run, how can they do that?

Speaker 4 (03:04):
Oh? Sure, So this walk wouldn't even be happy if
it wasn't for the school. Excuse me that I teamed upwards.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
No, I don't blame you. I would be emotional too.
It's a tough subject.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
To talk about.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Yeah, thanks, Yeah, Country Monitory. It's a ten k We're
doing it on January thirtieth. I invite everybody who's listening
to come out run walk, or only do half of
the event. But the event starts at Country Montessori and
it's an out and back course. It's flat, and I'm
inviting everybody that's listening to come. The event is free,

(03:46):
but we're asking for a twenty five dollars donation and
all those proceeds are going to be going to the
Firefighter Cancer Support Network.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
You know, I imagine too. It's not just the monetary thing.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
It's also just seeing the support of people coming out
to support first responders.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Oh you bet, emotional help. That's amazing.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Bob, thank you so much for joining us and telling
your story and we will get the word out for
our listeners.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Thanks. I appreciate it. Come join us.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Oh yob, Yeah, let's do it.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:16):

the ten k walk and run on January thirty.
