Surf's Up at San Diego Beaches

Big surf and strong rip currents have prompted both a high surf and coastal flood advisory at San Diego's beaches. KOGO's Laura Cain went to Mission Beach to find out how San Diegans and visitors are handling it.

Kitler. Part of this forecast is the big surf happening
along San Diego beaches now through Saturday and at least
Sunday has a lot of people talking about what they're
gonna do. The surf is expected to be pretty gnarly
to some and even dangerous.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
But do big surf and strong rip court warnings keep
people out of the water cocas Laura Kane went to
Mission Beach to find out.

It sure looks like paradise on the boardwalk in Mission
Beach and it's crowded too. Are visitors aware of the
dangerous conditions in the ocean right in front of them?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I'm from Utah. Do you know about rip currents? A
little about them? They're supposed to be very careful because of.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
The rip currents, and the waves are supposed to get huge.

Speaker 5 (00:41):
Okay, I have heard a little bit about that, but
I didn't know if it was San Diego.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
And are you still going to get in the water?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I mean I might dip my toe in.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Okay, good girl, We're from Alberta, Canada. Have you heard
about the waves that are about to hit us here
pretty hard?

Speaker 5 (00:55):
No?

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Do you know what a rip current is? I actually don't.

Speaker 5 (00:58):
He might, I don't.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Okay, So what's the rip current?

Speaker 5 (01:01):
It's going to shoots you out into the water, the
underwater pulls you away out there.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
So they're telling us to be extremely cautious because the
rip currents are going to be huge.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I hope there's a lot of postage, a lot of
signage out so people are safe.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
I think it's more dangerous rip currents or sharks prior
rip current. You're a smart kid. I want you to
be careful.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Are you going to get in the water?

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yep?

Speaker 4 (01:21):
At Hammels where you get to ran to boogie boards
and surfboards.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
And there's definitely been an increase in our renolds over
the last few days with the higher sets coming through.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
You do you give anybody advice with.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
Newer beginners space We stay to stay in for the
life right towers as far as that goes to, I mean,
just be be aware of where they're at in the water.
We definitely specify anticipating higher wave set up to eight
ten feet from up. We are prepared with sandbags if needed.
I highly doubt that we're needing them.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
So you're from Detroit and now you live in San Diego,
but we have the dangerous wave and rip current thing
going on. Would you rather be back in Detroit right now?

Speaker 2 (01:57):
No way, stay off the water doing the rip curve.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
What did you say about Brett and Veronica?

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Veronica? Yeah, she's the best ever anywhere.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
What about Brett?

We know him?

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Do you know about these big waves are about to
hit him.

Speaker 5 (02:15):
That's going to be huge.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Are you going to be out in the water.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
I'm gonna come and watch. They're long enough to get
hurt and not go back up.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
What was your worst injury?

Speaker 5 (02:23):
Just a long hold down at Bird.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
Rock that's from the rip currents.

Speaker 5 (02:26):
Yeah, not RIfS, just big, big waves.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
We were on a boat last night and the waves
were even worse than this.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
So what was it like?

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Like, what's it like swimming in the water with these
big waves?

Speaker 5 (02:38):
And they're fun?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
You need to be careful these next couple of days
because they're going to get bigger. Promise experts say, listen
to lifeguards, pay attention to signs, and bring home the
safest souvenirs from the beach.
