Veteran Father and Son Lose Everything in House Fire

Community members are asked to help out a father and son who lost everything in a house fire in Protero. Frederick Brown, who's 96, and his 70 year old son Mike are both veterans. Frederick's granddaughter talked with Bret and Veronica.

The family of two San Diego County Army and Air
Force veterans are hoping to rally support after high winds
caused a house to burn down in Potrero. Ninety six
year old Frederick Brown and his son's seventy year old
Mike Brown, were at home on Sunday, January eleventh when
strong winds hit.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
They were super cold, and so there was a fire
built in the fireplace, and the winds just took it
and put it in the rafters, and the whole rafters
of the room started burning and teaving in. Thankfully, the
neighbors were driving home and was able to call the
fire department because they saw the smoke in the fire

before my grandpa and my uncle did.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Family member Laura Lee Brown says everything happened quickly after that,
and those same neighbors were able to help win the
house burned.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
They came over.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
They were able to give my grandfather some blankets because
again it was really cold and windy, so he got
some blankets, we got some jacket.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Laura lisas she had just been visiting with them, but
had left before the fire started. Petrea's really remote, so
she didn't even know what was happening till later.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
There's no service going down the hill, so I wasn't
aware of what was happening until I finally got service
and my grandpa called me and said that that was
burning and it's gone.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Oh boy, the house is completely destroyed. And Brown has
set up a GoFundMe page for her grandfather, who served
in the Army and the Air Force, and her uncle
who was in the Air Force as well.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I want to get them settled. I don't want He's
ninety six. He shouldn't be worrying about this. I just
want to get him settled as soon as possible.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
And then me partially take care of the rest from there.

I'm sure he's grateful, but can you imagine at ninety
six years old, your house burns and you have to
squish into its tiny two bedroom apartment with another family
and you know, and your son. I mean just this,
I mean this whole happy family.

Or not right, It's like putting your whole routine on
his head. Yeah,
