Shaina Farrow began singing almost as soon as she could speak. (Her parents have the cassette tapes to prove it.) Her love for R&B formed early on, as the rich sounds of Patty Austin and Luther Vandross would awaken her each Saturday morning. An uncle recognized Shaina’s ability and put her in the studio at just 11 years old. She would go on flirting with music, singing in school plays, performing in church, joining her high school’s gospel choir—but her interests began to grow beyond music and she was accepted to Virginia Commonwealth University as a biology major. Although academia took precedence, Shaina never abandoned the music. She started singing references for artist hopefuls and eventually got the courage to hit a few open mics. But it was karaoke where she found real comfort. “Karaoke was a safe place to try music that you wouldn’t normally sing, and if you screwed it up it didn’t really matter,” Shaina laughs.
