Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for tuning in to The I Couple Podcast with
me and my man Rob Parker. On today's episode, we
talk about Ezekiel Ellie than if the Cowboys really need
Zeke to start the season. The Dolphins are tanking, but
I ain't doing it correctly and after a stellar Oklahoma debut,
would you rather have Jalen Hurtz or Tua right now?

(00:21):
NFL analyst Bucky Brooks, Hall of Famer Rod Woodson, and
USA Today sports columnists Dan Walking all join the show,
plus we play sources say on the Magic City Monday.

(02:04):
the NFL as we head into Week one. And let
me bring in my partner, Rod Parker. What's happening man?
How are you? I'm doing great, mister Broussard, how are you?
I am doing well. Long day for you today. Yeah,
I did a little double duty on this labor day.
It's labor day, so you know what I worked today.
You're laboring, that's right, yep. So I did the damn

(02:26):
Patrick showed this morning with Jason McIntyre. That was good.
And here I am back this evening to do a
little odd couple and looking forward to it. Well, let's
get it done. There's a lot to get into pro football,
college football, maybe even a little bit of baseball headed
your way, So let's introduce the Eye Couple crew and
get it going right. That's right on this labor day,

(02:47):
a lot of people taking off, and we got Ryan
in for Rob Ge. He's our producer today USC Chris
is in place of Alex and at the anchor desk
Steve di Seger, So who'll keep us updated throughout the
program and when breaking news happened. So that's a good thing.

(03:09):
So they were all on the other side of the
glass on this labor day, Chris Boussard, let's kick some
at well, let's do it. And you mentioned breaking news.
Who knows, maybe we'll have some during the show because
not convinced, but hey, there's there's conflicting reports out there
about the biggest news of the NFL offseason, and that

(03:32):
is well Andrew lux retirement obviously was huge, but right
now it's all about Ezekiel Elliott and will he and
the Cowboys come to a contract agreement in time for
him to play Sunday in the season opener against the
New York Giants. Now, it seemed like Rob yesterday that

(03:52):
thing and even the day before that things were really
heating up and that maybe they get a deal done.
Adam Schefter weeded out a couple of days ago that
talks between the Cowboys and Zeke were intensifying and that
both sides were aiming to wrap up a new deal
by the end of the weekend. Clarence Hill Junior, who's

(04:13):
been all over this story, he also said the source
had told him that both sides are moving toward a deal.
And Charles Robinson, your good friend from back in the day,
who we've had on the show before, he said essentially
the same thing yesterday, that they're close to completing a
contract extension. He said, and he emphasized it. I'm reporting this,

(04:37):
not speculating it. And yet today Jane Slater of the
NFL Network, she reported that a source has told her
that even though talks continued late Sunday, a deal is
quote unquote not close, and when asked what's holding it up,

(04:58):
she said, the answers the same as it's been all month.
Everything right, So it's all over the place, right right.
I have On Friday, I was co hosting First Things First,
and I also was on our show, and I said,
I give it about a twenty percent chance that a
deal is done, and Zeke is playing in the opener. Obviously,

(05:22):
from these reports, I'm a little more optimistic than that.
I saw one report even that said it was fifty fifty,
but I feel this way Rob. Obviously we don't know
the numbers yet. I've seen some reporting that they can
easily make him the highest paid player running back per year,

(05:46):
which is fourteen point three I believe is what ty
Gurle he's making. But the structure of the deal, how
much is guaranteed when he gets the money, and things
like that are the hold up. But I'm looking at
this point, if I'm Zeke, and I've been saying all years,
all month or two since the hold out began, that

(06:10):
I think they'll probably start the season without him. If
I'm Zeke at this point and they aren't making him
the highest paid running back, which is desperately what he wants,
then he might as well sit at this point because
to come in now, how much is even going to
be ready to play in Week one. I know he's

(06:30):
in Cobbo working out with Marshall falkins on and so forth,
but he obviously hasn't taken any hits. I know he
knows the offense and all that and want maybe you
put yourself in harm's way to rush him out there,
and what if God forbid he gets hurt or pull
something that would be the worst issue. Injuries are really
at risk, hamstring pull things like that, like something like that,

(06:52):
and that would be the worst. I think. You know
that you get him and you rush him back, and
you just gotta make sure you don't rush them. I mean,
take your time. Obviously you want them to be uh
back as soon as possible, But you know, I guess
we'll have to wait and see. A deal has to
get done. Yeah, And if I'm him, I'm just waiting

(07:12):
it out. Cowboys to me, if I'm him, I would
just believe it. Sure, you would like to You would
like to get a deal before a game is played,
because if they come out and run the football and
and and and blow out to the first two games
and they're two and oh, then you know, then you're
probably gonna be in trouble or probably have to eat
some crow and take less money. But if they don't,

(07:34):
then you're in the driver's seat. So it's a it's
a it's it's a case of chicken. You know, do
you really want to see any any any results? Even
for the Cowboys. What if they're bad? What if they
lose to the Giants? To open see, then you gotta
go like, oh boy, not only is that not only
did we give away a game by not being ready
with our best player. Now we gotta pay him right

(07:56):
right well, he probably can get whatever on the table,
whatever offers on the table right now. And I suspect this,
I mean, obviously it's not tied Gurley, but I suspect
this pretty good money. We know it's the second would
make him the second best pay running back in the league.
If I were him, I'd just be looking at the guarantees.

(08:16):
And I don't know if he's hung up on that title.
Do I have to? You know, Girly got with four
years anywhere between fifty seven and sixty or what the
reports have been saying. Is he hung up on that
final number being higher than girly sixty or is he
hung up on the guaranteed money. I think he should
be hung up on the guaranteed money right well. Always

(08:37):
to me, should be about to guarantee all those other
pretty numbers. Big numbers, Chris don't matter. I think that's
just for guys to feel good or whatever, or like
the agent or whatever. But but to me, I would
be like, and the same thing. Does the agent get
a percentage Chris a three percent or two percent or
whatever it is nowadays, because it's not as high as

(08:59):
you used to be? But does an agent get a
piece of that? It can't be. You can't be getting
so whatever to guarantee when if I'm paying you, it's
gotta be the guarantee only gets part of the guarantee.
I'm not giving you that deal's not done. If I
get that money, then you get a piece of it. Yeah,
I uh my guesses. Look, he can get whatever's on

(09:21):
the table right now in a week or two, you know. Yeah,
I don't see them going backwards unless Tony Poler turns
into Tony Dorset. And I don't see that happening. As
much as I like what Tony Poler's done, I mean
it come when the guy averaged fewer than six carries
a game last year at Memphis, and that was his
most of his college career. So he's not going to

(09:45):
be that bell cow, at least it doesn't seem that way.
So even you know he's a he may be a
situational back I mean, look, he did look good in
the preseason, but his preseason, but barring him coming out
and just blowing the yeels off, I think that Zeke
can get whatever's on the table in a week or two.

(10:05):
So again, if you're not going to be ready to
do a lot of damage in week one and they're
not giving you what you want, you've gone this long. Look, Rob,
as you said it, if they struggle in Week one
against the Giants or god forbid, lose, God forbid, he right,
if they lose, he will be the highest paid running

(10:27):
back that following week. I agree in short order because
you would be like, what do we just do? You
know what I mean? We just gave up a game
to the bad New York Giants, and that's what I'm
calling them until further notice, no doubt until and what
you do, Rob, If you lose to the Giants, then
now every single week is essentially a must win. I mean,

(10:51):
you're not going fifteen and one, but you know what
I mean, Like, now you've got no room for error,
and you had that right, and if you win these
first few games, especially division opponents, you know, obviously every
game in the NFL is important, but you've got a
little more room to breathe. You lose this first game
to the Giants obviously is one loss, and then it's

(11:12):
in your division, and so now you're really, you know,
sweating for the rest of the season. So yeah, if
I'm Zeke right now, I've gone this far, I might
as well wait it out unless they put the numbers
I want to see on the tape right. No, no, no,
I mean, and and it was I think he was
dug in from day one. And I think that when

(11:35):
you when you decide that you're gonna hold out, you
can't be squeamish otherwise otherwise don't do it, you know
what I mean. If you're gonna be like hold if
weak is coming and I'm not gonna get paid, oh
my god, oh my god, oh my god. Well, and
you should have never done it in the first place,
because you gotta be willing to give in order to
get I always tell people that's what he's like, a trade, right,

(11:57):
But fans always want to trade the last three guys
on the bench Christ So no, no no, no, no, you
gotta give up talent to get talent. Here's what I
hope for Zeke. That doesn't happen. Because look, we know
he's their best player. We know he is. I like,
you know, I like Dak Prescott, and I've talked about
that before, but he is not nearly the quarterback that

(12:21):
Zeke is the running back, you know what I mean.
Zeke is arguably the best running back in the league.
Dak is in nobody's top ten of quarterbacks. Okay, So
I don't want Zeke to get his deal and then
a day or two later Dad gets his, because it's
going I think Zeke already is gonna be feeling some

(12:44):
kind of way, or is feeling some kind of way
that a player he knows is as good a friends
as they may be, a player he knows is not
as good as him. It's going to double his money, right,
double it, And so that's got to hurt. So, I mean,
maybe I'm making something out of nothing, but you kind

(13:05):
of hope it doesn't happen the next day, just for
Zeke's ego sake. I mean, spread it out a little,
let him, let him basket and sunshine for a week
or so and feel good about where he is, and
and and then you might have a rejuvenated guy feeling
great from the standpoint of he fought for what he
believed in. He won, right and now he wiped Let

(13:26):
him feel like he went he won, and now you
got a rejuvenated guy who has something to prove in
a year that the Cowboys think they can make a
really serious run as far as a chance at the
super Bowl, which is which is what they're trying to
do quickly, Rob And I know we're gonna make our
predictions on Wednesday, But do you really like their chances

(13:49):
to get to the super Bowl in full force with
Zeke healthy the whole nine yards in the lineup? Are
you ready took a step back? No? Way? No? How? Wow?
I just don't, I mean kind of with you. I mean, look,
I like them and I like them. They're exciting. I
know they don't have any chance hard fans, right, but

(14:10):
I know they have no chance without Zeke, no know
what I mean? Like they probably want to make the playoffs.
I mean, NFC is tough, right, I think they're gonna
have a tough time making it with him. You're right,
And you know what, people gotta remember, there's some teams
that were good that didn't make it in and now
you look at like Green Bay's gonna take somebody's spot, right,
there's a chance that I think so that they're gonna
take a spot that that somebody had last year in

(14:33):
the NFC. Yep, no question. So it's gonna be interesting.
But yeah, we will see. So let's throw it out
to the callers as we always do. Eight seven seven
ninety nine on Fox, we know you guys are enjoying
Labor Day. Maybe some ribs, some some some burgers, of course,
maybe some wings. If you're Rod Parker, you know what
did you have ribs today? Today? I actually did have

(14:57):
leftover ribs from last night? Oh nice? Yeah, left, left good,
very good. Sprinkle a little water on the top, and
then cold whole rib you got? Wow? All right? Eight
seven seven ninety nine On Fox, it's your turn the

(15:18):
way in how much do the Cowboys need Zeke to
start the season? We will take your calls. Next, It's
The Eye Couple of Chris and Rob Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker week days at seven
pm Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the iHeart Radio app. It's The Eye Couple Chris Brussard

(15:42):
and Rob Parker on a Magic City Monday. Oh yes,
Rob Parker's shaking you shake. You don't want to see that.
Oh no, but I am shaking around. You are hot,
that's right, speaking the Witch. Is your baseball or softball
season over? Yeah, it's all done. How did he go?

(16:05):
We had a playoff game last week and lost. That
was it. I wasn't able to play. It was on
a Saturday. Oh okay, yeah, so what you end up batting?
I don't have twenty two no, no, no, I've actually
hit really well this year. I don't have the exact numbers,
but I was at a four hundred clip. I was
really every every weekend getting about two hits. I saw

(16:26):
a bunch of people posting your hits on Instagram or
maybe it was just you. Maybe it was, but there
were hits. I had a good year. You saw the
walk off that column put on this show. Hey, you
were swinging it well from what I saw. I gotta
give you that. I was getting some hits. It was fun.
I gotta give you that. Next year, I'm gonna get

(16:46):
you to play maybe if I can get out there.
I know what they played, and god no, but it's fun.
Years decade. It's fun and it is. It's right down
the road from where we work, so I was gonna
be swinging. We can do that, Yeah, we can do that.
All right. All right, let's get to these calls. But first,
let me tell you we are brought to you by

(17:07):
a True Car. When it comes to selling or trading
in your car, you need to make good choices. And
with True Car, you've got a star on your roster.
So when you're ready to sell or trade in your car,
check out Truecar. True cash offer not available in all areas.
All right, Rob, We threw it out to the callers
eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox. How much do
the Cowboys need Zeke for Week one? All right, let's

(17:29):
start with Anthony in Ohio. You're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Anthony? Hey, what's up? Guys?
Thanks for taking my call. I'm a first time caller,
so I enjoy the show. Well, we appreciate you, Anthony,
Thank you, no problem. I just wanted to point out
real quick, I'm not I'm not a Dallas fan at all,
but my wife it's a big Cowboys fan, so I

(17:50):
follow it just because I want a happy life right,
happy wife, happy life, no doubt right. So one thing
I noticed was, and I think it kind of plays
into what Jerry is trying to play hardball not hardball,
is I think he kind of knows we don't really
need Zeke right now because if you look at their

(18:11):
schedule the first eight games of the season, there's really
only two tough, tough games. That's the Eagles and the Saints.
In my opinion, the Giants, the Cowboys, and the Dolphins.
The first three games of the season or the Redskins
are kind of like rebuilding teams and then you have
you have the Jets later on it is kind of rebuilding,

(18:33):
and then you have the Giants again. So I think
Jerry kind of knows, you know, it's not a top
priority because if he if he misses games, we have
a softer schedule on the front end. The back end,
like he said in his interview, we need him for
the end and the playoffs because that's where he starts

(18:53):
getting tough. So I personally think they don't really need
him right now. I think Jerry knows they don't really
need him right now. But that's the point. I mean, look,
Zeke has to show up by what Week ten is
it to get credit for the season, because he's not
in the position Levian Belle was in last year where

(19:14):
he can become a free agent no matter what happens
this summer. So he's got to be there at some point,
and so at the very latest you would think he'll
be there week ten. The caller is right. I mean
all throughout, look, they do the Eagles are tough. I
think the Eagles are are very tough. But outside of that,
you do have four games against the Redskins and the Giants,

(19:37):
you do have the Dolphins, you do have you know,
the Jets, you got the AFC East, which we know
Rob has been down for years outside of New England. Yeah,
but you got the Bills, you got the Lions. I mean,
they do have a fairly easy schedule. But the only
problem is if you give up any of those easy games.
Is it the difference between you and the Eagles and

(19:58):
whether or not you're a wild card team compared to
a division winner, do you know what I mean? No
doubt that's that's the day win. Even if they survived
this type of schedule without Zeke, I don't think they
be better than the Eagles. No, I agree. I think
the playoffs as a wild card, right, but they would

(20:19):
not be the division. Eagles roster is loaded and if
if WinCE in a lifetime is healthy and gets back
to form, they should be able to win the division.
All right, let's go to Tom in Las Vegas. You're
in the odd couple Fox Sports Radio. What's up Tom? Wow?
Another first time? Thank you, appreciate you for day holiday.

(20:42):
Always bring out the new callers. We love like that
he and waiting to get paid. It only Behooves cannot
put the years on his body. Well. Look, he knows

(21:04):
that the shelf life for an NFL running back is low,
and that's why he's trying to get his money now.
Because even though he's only played three years, he's carried
the ball twice as much as your average starting running backs. Rob,
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but
he has been a workhorse for the Cowboys and he
does know that. You know, three years from now he

(21:25):
may be worn down. Look at Lashawn McCoy, Rob, Now,
I know he's all he's thirty one, but he just
got cut. I actually think it'll be good in Kansas City,
but he just got cut. And so he was one
of the better running backs in the league a few
years ago. So Zeke understands that, and that's why he's
trying to get the money to guarantee money right now

(21:47):
so that that'll cover him if he does fall off
in a few years. But the bottom line is, again,
he's got to come in at some point this season
to get credit for this year toward free agency. No
doubt about a Daniel and Apple Valley, California. You're in
the yard couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Daniel? Yo?
What's up? Um? Nah? Man? Cowboys are just trade z.

(22:09):
You get as much as pick they can get from plugging.
You can plug in any running back behind that line
they're gonna get get over a thousand yards. I'm not
convinced to that. Well, it is a strong offensive line.
Nick Fadden got over a thousand yards for that one season. Yeah,
and he was older. And look, one thing you can't

(22:31):
say about this is that the Cowboys are unique in
that their offense is based around Zeke. Not many NFL
clubs now have their offense based around their running back,
and so they're different in that regard. But it does
rob it if if Zeke holds out and I don't
know that this is in the back of Jerry's mind.

(22:52):
It does give you an opportunity to see if what
the caller just said it is true. I agree with you, Rob,
I don't really think it is. I think a guy
can be effective behind that line. Yes, I don't think
they'll be, Zeke, but it gives you not be effective. Yeah,
what what is Tony Pollard? And he gives you an
opportunity to see what is dak without Zeke. Hey, hey,

(23:13):
let's go to Marty real quick before we get to
Steve de Sega's Marty. Then Marty from Kentucky. You're on
the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. Hey, how y'all
doing that? We're doing great? You know it? Brother? I
just think it's a real uh um. It shows you
guys characters that I come hard after Rob last week

(23:33):
and y'all bring and y'all let me come right back
at you guys. Are you guys are humble? Hey? Man,
you know that's how we ain't personal. We don't we
don't we don't think stuff, we don't wry it, but
we don't think that. Marty, you're being like disrespectful trying
to be hurtful. Bring it and y'all can take you
exactly now with Ezekiel here Um, I think he should

(23:54):
take the contract because of the value of running backs
currently in the NFL. I don't like the way the
running back situation, as we've talked about that before. I
like that restructure, but I can see him might jump
on this. And I do disagree with one thing that
you guys agree with, y'all. Y'all think it seeks the
best player on the team. I think it's Jaylen Smith.
I think it's easier to replace the start running back

(24:16):
than a guy on defense, this linebacker that can do
everything and give you options defensively that you just can't
find players that do that. Well. It's interesting you, Marty,
that you bring up Jalen Smith, because we know he
got signed last week. He actually gave them a very
team friendly deal, Like if he had become a free

(24:37):
agent this summer, then he would be getting much more
money than he signed for. I think, look, we know
the history that he went through and really costs himself
some money early and that probably factored in. And you know,
when you've had that kind of bad luck, Yeah, then
you go I don't know if I want to wait,
what happens if this happens to me, you know what
I mean? Question? You know it could Yeah, things could

(24:59):
change for you to tomorrow. So uh, I don't. I
don't begrudge him at all for taking that deal. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with
Chris Brussar then Rob Parker week days at seven pm Eastern,
four pm Pacific. We love having our next guest. Then
he likes to go at it with us. He's a
former NFL player, former NFL front office member, now a

(25:22):
media analyst for NFL Network, Fox Sports Radio. It is
our man, Bucky Brooks, Buckie, what's apt what's happening man?
What's going on? What's going on? Bucky can also be
called the official NFL with Sugar Nut, which is crazy.
Sometimes he's crazy too. I didn't say that, Bucky, that
was Felix. That that wasn't that was Felix, all right,

(25:46):
So so Bucky, look, Zeke, I don't know. You know,
there's conflicting reports as to whether or not this thing
is closed or far apart or whatever at this point, though,
if they get the deal done tonight or tomorrow, what
good is he going to be on Sunday? I mean,
can we expect much from him if he if they

(26:06):
get the deal done today or tomorrow. Now, I wouldn't
expect much because if I'm the Dallas Cowboys, it's a
long term play. You've heard Jerry Jones talking about it
being a marathon, not a sprint. So if Zeka is
signed in the next day or so, at best, maybe
you get ten to fifteen plays. Because I don't want
to pack him. I don't want to get Yeah, I

(26:28):
don't want to give him enough where he could kind
of get injured and have something that kind of affects
him long term. I think what you do is you
kind of see where he is, evaluate is conditioning. You
let him go through practice, and then at the end
of the practice, we can make a determination on okay,
can we put him in the game for a little bit?
Should we hold him out? But I wouldn't have high

(26:49):
hopes if I have Zeke in my fantasy leagues for
what he could do in Week one. Yeah, I think
that's just a smart move. Let's let's look at Pat Mahomes.
Vegas has him at thirty seven and a half touchdowns
for the over under where are you and why are

(27:11):
you picking the number you're picking? I would go over,
And the reason I was over is because this offense
is absolutely loaded Tyrichio, Travis Kelsey, Sammy Watkins. They bring
over the Shawn McCoy, and I know everyone who's gonna say, well,
the Shawn McCoy wasn't very good his last year at Buffalo.
Things would be different than Kansas City because the supporting
cast will make it where it's a lighter box that

(27:34):
he's facing. I think Pat Mahomes can easily hit the
forty touchdown mark, if not greater. I just believe this
offense is so dynamic that they're gonna put up points.
And plus their defense can't stop anybody, so it's gonna
be a shootout every time they step onto the field.
How about when people talk about last year that Mahomes
had ten interceptions dropped and he could have had twenty

(27:59):
two hundred. Since if guys held onto it, do you
look into that when you evaluate quarterbacks and say he
got away with him last year, we'll get away with
him this year. Hey, Rob, there's an old saying if
my aunt had certain parts, I'm just as I'm just
as this closure. I told this claw Rob and I

(28:22):
have a wing bet. I say, I'm betting that he'll
get forty or more touchdow I got forty or left
I under forty with you. But I don't see it.
There's no way. I don't see him getting forty, you know,
assuming everybody's healthy. Yeah, if he's healthy and available for
all sixteen games, I think he hits step mark um.
I mean, sho, that's not difficult to do. That's what

(28:45):
two in most games, and then maybe he hit some three.
You know, he'll hit the jackpot a couple of times.
Because there's some guys on the teams on the schedule,
their defense won't match up well with the personnel that
they have. I just believe it's a perfect storm for
Patrick Mahomes. Not only did they have a great play
call and designer and Andy Reid and Eric the enemy,
but their defense is not one that's going to keep
the score down, So they're going to have to play

(29:07):
the video game like shootouts that allow him to throw
the ball all over the yard. I think he hits
forty plus touchdown. I got a two part question about
the Chiefs. I actually, even despite losing Kareem Hunt. I
think they're they have more weapons now than they had
last year because mcicole Hardman and you know, they get

(29:28):
Sammy Watkins is healthy, you know, miss six games last year.
Like their speed, it's not just Tyreek Hill this year
with the blazing speed, but it's it's also Watkins and Hardman.
So I want you to address that in my A,
my offer and that and then two, has the defense
improved enough or do you think it will improve enough

(29:48):
for them to legitimately, you know, win the Super Bowl?
Not that you're picking them, but you know, well, I
mean look last year, with that leaky defense, they were
an overtime away from going to the Super Bowl. So
if they're just a little bit better, they have an
opportunity to get there. I think the main thing when
you look at the Chiefs, how does Andy Reid kind

(30:10):
of keep everyone happy with all of the players that
can do things with the ball. I know you kind
of operate a systematic approach to open eye, get the ball,
but they have so many weapons. Tyreek and Sammy and
Travis Kelsey, Shandy McCoy out the backfield, the other running
back Darryl and Damian Williams, I mean, they have a
lot of miles defeats, but I think they just play

(30:31):
a style they really work for them. They're kind of
like a loose version of the Golden State Warriors, where
any and everybody can go off for a big game.
I just think it's a rare offense that we're seeing.
I think we could see an offense that was great
last year be even greater this year with the weapons
that they have around them. So I want you on
the record that Aaron Rodgers will fall off the cliff

(30:51):
and the Packers won't make the playoffs. Is that what
you got all we came to the Packers will them
won't make the playoffs? No, Aaron Rodgers will fall off
the cliff this year and they won't make the playoffs.
He won't. He won't fall off the cliff. Rod like
Ruth Westbrook fall off the cliff. I'm just asking the
triple doubles like they were giving them away at Walmart.

(31:12):
Aaron Rodgers will continue to do what he's always done.
He'll throw a touchdowns, he'll be magical, he'll make plays. However,
it is all their defense to determine whether they go
to the playoffs or not. Mike Patton. The defense. They
want to have an attacktout defense, come after the quarterback,
really pressure the passers. We will see how that holds us.
But man, as long as you got Aaron Rodgers, you

(31:34):
got a chance. And so are they gonna make Bucky,
you're playing both sides of defense. Are they gonna make
the playoffs? Yes or no? That's what I want to
hear from. Yes or no? Man, there's so many good teams. No,
I'm not asking you that, Bucky, Yes or no? No, Okay,
you're saying no, I want to I want to bet you.
I want to bet you twenty wings in a large

(31:56):
extra a large diet Coke. Can we do that? And
I'll take that bet. I just want to make sure
you serve me in a Plasskurt somebody Hill, No, that
adn't happened. Hey, your fantasy is not Christian. What he
just said, I say down to that one Magic City

(32:19):
Monday play too long? Why Bucky? Before you go? I
do have one more serious question. We got about a
minute left. Jacoby Brissette. We know he just got the
two year, thirty million dollar deal. I'm hearing a lot
of people saying like they don't think the cults are
you know, they do think the culture is still gonna

(32:40):
be really good, make the playoffs, and they really like Brissette.
What are your feelings on him. I think he's a
solid quarterback. I think he's a solid quarterback. I think
it will take some time for them to find their
identity with Jacoby Brissette at quarterbacks, but I think they
still can win games. Defensively, This team, this young, hungry
unit that they have it set up to have success,

(33:02):
and I think they will have success to where Eberfluss
like to run in defense much like Dallas. Then on offense,
they have enough weapons where they can be successful. Remember
this offensive line played lights out last year. I think
Andrew Luck only was back eighteen times. They provide Jacoby
Rosette that kind of protection, he will be fine. And
so it's just a matter of him not trying to

(33:24):
be Andrew Luck, but then within himself being very very
comfortable in his own skin, and then Frank White finding
a handful of concept that worked very well for him.
Remember Frank Wright was in Philadelphia when they found a
recipe for Nick Bowles to be a Super Bowl MVP.
I think he can find a recipe to help Jacoby
Brissett and leave the coach into the playoffs. All right,

(33:46):
there you have it, the great words of Bucky Brooks
and Rob got another wing bad. Yes, I wrote it
down too. You're not gonna welch. I'm still waiting for
these other guys to pay up. So it was. It
was twenty wings, a diet coke and Rob dressing up
in a plant that ain't happening, that that party happen
about it? I think I got a book couple from

(34:06):
Jimmy Choose. All right, Bucky Man, peace alight? Yeah, has
Melvin Gordon betten off more than he can chew? We
will discuss next. It's the Eye Couple of Fox Sports Radio.

Labor Day and the worst of that song? Who that
dress like scandalous? Is that gonna be you? Rob? If
you lose that Bet? I know you tripping right. There's
a lot of things Park will I know. I was like, what,

(34:50):
I'm a woman. Oh god, unbelievable. No, I told you,
I know I'm not seeing that right out of the
wings and the dress. No one, no way, no, how
like time ted right right. Well, look, we just got

(35:10):
done talking about Ezekiel Elliott, and uh, there's no questioning
his value to the Dallas Cowboys. You and I both
believe they cannot make the playoffs without Ezekiel Elliott, or
they will not make the playoffs like they do have
a weak schedule. But I still don't see them making
the playoffs without Zeke. He is the star that their

(35:33):
offense revolves around. However, there's another running back, a good one,
but he's not as good as Zeke. He's not in
that class. In my view. It's Melvin Gordon. And he
is holding out with the Los Angeles Chargers. Reportedly he's
set to make a little over five million, about five
and a half million this year. Reportedly they've offered him

(35:56):
a long term deal at ten million dollars a year
that he's rejected, and now they have said, look, we're
not doing any more contract talks with you this season.
If you come back and play, it's going to be
for your current contract to five and a half million. Now,
I once you do that, you're basically telling the guy

(36:17):
not to come back, like if you were really serious
about it. I don't believe in that. I think that's
if you had ten on the table and you say
ten is our last offer, and if you don't do that,
then you probably won't be here anymore. Then I'm fine
with that. But to say I'm gonna go okay, now
we're gonna go back, Just lose a game or two
and don't run the football, and then see how how

(36:38):
big and bad you are. Because here's because the Chargers
have an old quarterback in Philip Rivers and their windows
year last year, I know that, but their windows smaller
than the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah, I mean, I don't think
anybody considers them super Bowl. They're good the Charges last year?

(36:59):
What a chance? You gotta know, I don't feel the
same way. I'm just saying you think they got a
good chance of making the Super Bowl? No, I said,
I don't feel the same way as I did a
year ago last year when they went too when they
went to New England. No, I don't. I don't a definitely,
not without Gordon. But but I think also because last
year was one of those everything went right, they want

(37:21):
a lot of big road I was really impressed by them, remember,
no they did though. I thought they were going to
go to New England and win. That's how good they
looked leading up to that. Well, here's the challenge that
Gordon faces, Roban. You talked about how good they looked
late in the season. They beat Pittsburgh and Kansas City

(37:42):
without Melvin Gordon. Yeah, I believe so you could double checks.
They had impressive road wins right year. I'm almost positive
they were four and old without Gordon, and they got
two backs in Austin Eckler and Justin Jackson that I
do think they might not be quite as good as Gordon.

(38:02):
We'll find out, but I do think they can together.
They can definitely duplicate his production. And you're right, if
they fall off and they're clearly struggling without him in
the running game, then you know, maybe he'll win out.
I don't see that happening, though. I think he's and
they've given him permission to seek a trade, but I
don't know who's gonna give up a ton of stuff

(38:23):
for him at this point. It is just sad, Rob,
because you and I grew up. The running back was
the glamour position. It is being devalued to the degree
right now until somebody needs a running back. So we'll
have to wait and see. We'll see, all right, It's

(39:30):
All right, rob Let's stick with the NFL. Big trades
made over the weekend, most notably, of course, was Jadeveon
Clowney going to Seattle, but Miami, a team that had
been rumored to be in the hunt for Jadeveon Clowney.
They made some other deals. They traded away wide receiver

(39:52):
Kenney Stills. Of course, he's one of the players that's
kneeling during the national anthem in and you know, protesting
the social injustice and uh he you know, he and
coach Brian Flores, I guess kind of got into it
a little bit. I'd say, right, a little bit. I've
never seen coach take that tactic. Yeah, I mean not,

(40:14):
don't think any of us have. You know, he tried
to play it like it was motivated, motivation for him
to have a better season. But you know, Kenny spoke
out against jay Z's deal with the league, and then
Brian Flores opens the practice with eight straight jay Z song.
So Kenny Steals is out of there, So thank god.

(40:37):
What I would say so is Layer, Well, yeah, I
mean Miami is they could be the worst team in
the league. Does after they after they go on two
and fourteen. Hopefully, hopefully he's got some some security in
that contract, because it's not gonna be his fault. They're

(40:57):
gonna be bad fault. I mean, hopefully they understand that. No,
that's not how it works after Wall. It has worked
that way before. I mean, I'm thinking NBA, but it
worked that way for uh for um, I can't. His
name escapes me. The coach of the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
Uh so he you know, he took them through the process. Yeah,

(41:22):
Brett Brown, Brett Brown, he took him through the process,
and uh, he's still there. So may it could work
for some guys as long as there's an understanding. And
this is a guy Flores who you know, I know Rob.
The coaches, the assistant coaches out of New England from
under Bill Belichick have not had success as head coaches. No,

(41:43):
but he I think he is. Flord's a good young
coaching prospect. I'm not convinced yet. We'll see, yeah, I
mean we still have to see. But I just just
the work he did on that staff. He was all
over that staff. Uh did worked with various positions. I
think he's a good young prospect at the coach. But anyway,

(42:04):
they also traded away offensive tackle Laramy Tunsil, who's a good,
good offensive tackle, and they got two first round picks
and a second round pick and the tackle that the
offensive tackle they got to replace. Tunzil gave up the
most the second most sacks in the NFL last season.
All right, so clearly robed. They're in tank mode, and

(42:28):
Brian Flores has denied it. And I get where he's
coming from. He's saying, look, we're going out to win
every game we play. We are not taking the game.
Means too much to me, There's no way I do that.
I get what he's saying, and I believe he's speaking
from the heart. I don't, I know. Here's here's here's
why I believe what he's speaking from the heart, because

(42:50):
he will the players they have on that roster. I
fully believe that Brian Flores will play the best players
and try to win every single game. But the management
and probably hopefully for his sake, in you know, discussions
with Flores, they've all agreed, look, we're going to be bad.

(43:14):
We're going to fill up or put together a roster
that essentially can't win. And that's the thing. So when
you tank, it's not obviously you're not telling players to lose,
you're not trying not to win, you're not putting in
bad schemes and so on and so Forth. You just
know our players aren't good enough, and they in trading

(43:36):
away a couple of their better players and going out
and getting draft picks for him and a bad young
player to replace Laramie Tunsell. They're putting out a roster
that they know is not going to win many games.
And that's why I say they're tanking. Yet Floores can
say with sincerity, no, we're really trying to win games. Yeah,

(43:57):
but it's about talent, and the players see what's going
on and what's happening and how you're getting rid of people.
I mean, you can say that, and I'm not saying
that they're not gonna come out. They have jobs to do,
trying to make a roster, trying to play. But everybody
also knows the same reason why people won't show up
in force at the games, because the fans know what's
going on as well. It's the same idea. You got

(44:20):
a three time loser as a quarterback, And what I
mean is every time you put this guy and as
a starter, you know what you're gonna get at some point,
and it'll play well for a little bit and then
it's the same old thing. Instead of guy being Ryan
Fitzpack exactly. I just I just when you look at it,
it's the same thing. You know, Am I mad at
the Marlins fans because ten thousand show up? No, I'm

(44:41):
not mad at them. When you put a team and
you're really ready to compete, then I'm interested. Until then,
as a fan, you let me know when you're serious
about And I'm not saying you gotta win a World
Series for me to feel like you're serious, Chris, because
that's not That's not what I'm talking about. But but
everybody knows it when they see it. And if you
want to think you're gonna get to uh and you're

(45:02):
gonna have the worst record in the league and you're
trying to get a franchise quarterback, good luck on that.
If it happens, then then you did the right thing.
If it doesn't happen, then it'll be another bad year.
Uh So, I just I just don't think that it's
fair for people to expect fans to show up and
spend their harder money when you're not trying. That's my
only issue. You could do whatever you want. I'm not

(45:25):
look I get it as a strategy, I get it.
You know, look at the best teams in the league.
They've all got hot young quarterbacks. Now, it's true that
they didn't all get those quarterbacks in the first round.
Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, even if it I mean the
high first round, you know, so it's not that you

(45:48):
have to be bad to get I'm a top flight quarterback.
I was gonna say this, did my homes come after
the after the Chiefs tank? No, no, no, they don't
say good. They were good. But I'm saying, teams do
have that top quarterback, you know, the top teams, they
do have a good quarterback in place. I'm glad you

(46:08):
brought up Ryan Fitzpatrick because the question is this, if
you know you're going to be bad, why are you
playing Fitzpatrick over Josh Rosen. Rosen of course a high
first round pick last year. Wasn't he number ten? The
tenth pick last year? And with his second team, he

(46:31):
would have been a guy. You know, let's if he
were coming out this year. I mean when he was
coming out that year, a lot of people thought highly
of him, you know, UCLA. He was a big name quarterback,
one of the tops in the country, and so why
not play him? Now a lot of people might be
saying that, Rob, I actually think this is the smart
way to go, even though we know you're you're playing

(46:51):
to lose or you're going to lose your quarterback. We
just talked about it, the offensive line, that it's gotten worse.
It wasn't good to begin with, but now it's gonna
be even worse. With this trade. He's going to get
beat up quickly. And so rather than putting Rosen out
there for sixteen games to get chopped down like a tree,

(47:14):
let Fitzpatrick take some of the hits early. You know,
even if Fitzpatrick comes out humming the first few games,
he's gonna turn, as you would say, into a pumpkin
in about three weeks, three or four weeks, and then
you put Rosen in. I mean, I would be shocked
if Fitzpatrick plays the entire scene. But if that, if

(47:35):
that was the case, then Kyler Murray wouldn't be starting
on day one. I just I don't put right, they
got a bad team. Why don't I think why Kingsbury
thinks they're gonna be that bad? I agree with you,
they but offensive line, the offensive line of the running
I don't know. I just don't expect them to be
that good, and I don't see them saying, well, let's

(47:55):
not put our future out there right away, Let's let's
put a veteran quarterback. But I don't think they think
they're gonna be as bad as everybody else does. Okay,
we'll see. I mean, I agree with you. I think
they're gonna struggle. I don't think they can protect Kyler Murray.
I think he's gonna have a rough goal of it,
as much as I like him, But I think the
Redskins I don't think he won the job Dwayne Haskins,

(48:20):
but still I think they're looking at it too, like, look,
let's get the kid ready. They don't have a good
offensive line, so their quarterbacks are going to take a pounding.
So they rather save Haskins. He's their quarterback of the future.
Now we don't. I don't think Rosen is their quarterback
in the future. They might just think he's terrible, and
he might be. Well, then you should just say you
should say get rid of him. I mean, if what

(48:44):
did you what did you trade for him to play
a guy who you already know what the deal is?
And Notre Dames scored already the game just started. Uh,
Notre Dame's on the board. Well, hey, they're right ninth
in the country. They should be rolling. You know what
I'm saying, Like, I get it with Rosen. If let fitzpac,

(49:05):
I think the quarterback's gonna get pounded. And so if
I throw Rosen in in game four, then I still
have twelve games to watch him play and see what
he's made of. But and I think he did play
better than Fitzpack. Again, I know it's the preseason, but
he did play better than Fitzpatrick in the preseason game.
But Fitzpatrick has a track record, and we know that. Right,

(49:27):
look at that, they may think, look, let's get a
good month out of fitz Magic and then go with
Rosen when he turns into a pumpkin, right, which he
always does. We did it last year, remember that week.
We predicted it as soon as the old question, soon
as they named him the starting quarterback, where like, okay,
just wait, you're absolutely right. It looked at this he
led them to victories over New Orleans and Pittsburgh eight touchdowns,

(49:52):
one pick through for over eight hundred yards. Even game three,
I remember Game three, we were talking about it. They
lost to Pittsburgh, but it was a close game. He
was thirty for fifty four intre eleven yards, three touchdowns,
three picks. I remember specifically you and I talking about
that game, and I think it was a Monday night game,

(50:15):
and sure enough he fell off from there, and you know,
he and Jameis Winson kind of alternated later in the season.
But yeah, it's coming. And I think, look, if you
and I know that, then I'm sure the Miami Dolphins
know that, and I'm guessing that's why they've taken this
approach with Josh Rosen. But how about Josh Rosen? He's

(50:35):
been in too bad situations so far. Man. If I'm him,
I'm like, dude, what have I done to deserve this?
You remember that who made that song pet Shop Boys?
What did I do to deserve this? Because he is,
he figures, Okay, they dumped me after one year, Okay,
after making me a top ten pick. So now I'll

(50:56):
go to Miami where they're looking for a quarterback and
then they bringing the old dude who they know what
you're gonna get from them, and they still won't make
me to start in quarterback. I think anybody just wants
an opportunity to play and then let me sink or swim.
If I'm no good, then I'm fine with that, do
you know what I mean? But give me a chance. Yeah,

(51:16):
you can look at it several ways. I mean, one
you can look at it as Rosen is just really bad.
They think he's really bad. Remember we had Charlie Castley
on the former GM. He said he doesn't think Rosen
is very good, that they're gonna be in the quarterback
market for two or Justin Herbert or whoever next year. Okay,
it may be Trevor Lawrence in two years. But he

(51:38):
doesn't think he's very good. So there could be that
and they just they're ready to move on from this guy.
Or it could be he has shown them something and
like I said, they may want to protect him at
least early on from taking hits for sixteen games and
maybe takes them for ten or twelve games. Well, it's
gonna be interesting. I mean, the Dolphins I think are

(51:59):
going to be a punching bag this year. And you know,
Josh Rosen, it's been a tough start for him. And
that's the thing. Remember how there was all to talk
about how intelligent he is and how he's a thinker
and and and all of that. So he's probably a
guy that is really looking at this situation, even more

(52:22):
so than maybe a guy that that you know, is
not that type of guy, you know what I mean? Like,
I mean, what do you think he's He's a guy
that analyze this stuff. He's a guy that overthinks stuff.
He's gotta be like, man, what in the world is
going on? I would be there if I was in
this situation, because it just at some point and for

(52:44):
him to have been drafted as high as he was,
they had to have seen something to that they won't
really allow him to get on the field and do
it right. And remember he was a fourth quarterback I
believe in that draft when when't a top ten pick?
He was ten, but you know three went before me, right,
but he still was a top ten pick. I mean, wow,

eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven, seven

in you know, I covered the Lions for all those years,
you know, as a comments in Detroit. I used to
go to you know, covered every single game for almost
twenty years, right, and I would go to Miami and
it was just shocking, you know. I just thought, with
the history of the Dolphins and Shoola and all that

(54:32):
other stuff, and the undefeated team, and you would be surprised.
Chris Opening Day or a number of years ago. I
remember being down there and it wasn't sold out. It
was just the fans were like lukewarm about the Dolphins,
and I was just stunned. But here we go. Let's
let's talk to Mitch in Miami. You're in the odd
couple of Fox Sports Radio. What you got, Mitch? Hey?

(54:55):
Hey Rob? How you doing it? Hey? Rob Man? Well?
I got a sort of second Uh yeah, I'm well
being a mighty Dolphins fan. I guess I'm very critical fan.
You know. It's brutal, but I'm happy. I'm happy that
they're taking either we're gonna get two uh or next
year get get Lawrence. So you're ready from submtch you

(55:20):
got you got Lawrence obviously and available to the following you. Right,
so you you have you obviously have no season tickets? Right? No? Yeah, okay,
didn't that you don't go? Then? Why would you? Kid?
I agree with you. I'm just saying, here's but how
about this, Rob, what if if you do have season tickets,

(55:40):
would you rather than go out there and be five
and eleven or take the approach they're taking and maybe
win one or two games. But it's not a guarantee,
is what I'm saying. I just, yeah, let me know
when you're competitive, and then I'll buy tickets. That's just me.
I'll watch you on TV all day for free, but

(56:01):
I'm not going to pay into this whole notion that
you're going to tank? Are you giving me a tank
discount prices? Do you see what I'm saying? I get it,
but I do think it makes some sense if you
if done correctly. I do think I get what you're saying.
That's all fair to the fans. But is it fair
to the fans to just be mediocre for twenty years? No?

(56:23):
I don't want to be mediocre, but I'm not going
to pay top dollar for a bad product. That's what
I'm not gonna do. Mike, Mitch did no. No No, No,
she didn't even make a point. Yeah. No, he just
said that he didn't have He's cool with the I
understand him. That's why I asked, do you have tickets? Mike?
In New York, you're on the odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio. What's up, Mike's how you happening? Man? I'm

(56:47):
all right, Rob. I enjoyed you earlier on the DP show.
I appreciate that, Mike, thank you. And I actually think
I'm not mad at the Dolphins because if you look
at it, what their original right Christians right, they were
gonna win maybe five games, and now I think there's
I think they saw what too It did or over

(57:07):
the night, and I think they really thought about it,
like we can get him do it, what's our pick
and we can load up the offense to learn what
those two first from the text that we can get
a little a little thanksy going, but it I think
bred Sore is a fool because he will not reach
the benefits of this at all. They're gonna fire him

(57:27):
and get an offensive genius and make ta look like
Dan Marino. Well, look, you hope that in a situation
like this, the coaches in the room and they're they're like, look,
we're going to struggle this year. We get it. We
know it's not gonna be your fault, but we believe
in you as a head coach, and we're gonna carry

(57:47):
you through this. I brought up the example of Brett
Brown in Philadelphia earlier. Now I'm one that thinks it's
time to move on from Brett Brown to get to
that next level. Although look, you can argue robbed they
were a shot away from defeating the World champions right Toronto.
They lost in the second round on the game seven

(58:08):
buzzer beating by Kawhi Leonard. So Brett Brown, you know,
carried him that far. But my point is that Brett
Brown coached them through the dog years of the process
when they were horrible, and they stuck with him. You
hope that's that that most In most cases that doesn't happen.
Most times they get rid of that coach because it's
just a bad stinch, right the organization and so like

(58:32):
your brand becomes losing, you know what. And so I
hope that's not the case with Flores, but it could be.
Perfect example. It happened in Detroit. They hired Alan Trammell.
They'd a bad team, right, he's he's a Tiger legend.
Yea three years they lost a hundred or more games
all three years. And then when they finally put the
team together, what they do then went out and got
Jim Leland to be a manager. Do you know what

(58:54):
I mean? Trim didn't get trim didn't get to all
the good players that they wound up getting for being
that bad, and that's what usually happened. You're right, though
your example of Brett Brown is different. Let's go to
Chris in Iowa. Is that you calling on the other line? Chris,
Chris in Iowa. You're in the odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio. Hey, fellas, I just want to start off

(59:16):
by saying, I listen to your show all the time
and I love it. Thank you. Man. Hey, what part
of Iowa are you in? It's a resort time. It's
called Okoboji's one of the greatest best kept secrets in
the entire state of Iowa. Really really, I lived in
Des Moines. Is it close to De Moines? I lived
there for two years. No, we're up in the northwest
corner of Iowa. We have one of the only blue

(59:39):
water lakes in the entire world. Wow, you know what
I need to make when I make my tour next summer.
I was gonna be on my list. I'm gonna go
to Iowa. So Rob, I'm gonna go. He's intrigued. Now
you weren't even treating me, Rob, I've sold you in
Iowa all I can't treat Chris. Chris, Now, you said
you live in a resort town. When was the last
time you saw a black person walking around where you are?

(01:00:02):
We have black people all the time. All right, you
sold me? Now, I was like, wow, all right, So
what you got everything here in Iowa? Okay? All right?
What you got Chris? Well? I just wanted to weigh
in on the Miami Dolphins tanking thing. You know, as
far as h Fitzpatrick being out there, they have to

(01:00:23):
put Fitzpatrick out there, I think. So it's just because
they invested a second round pick, and I'll be it,
they traded it to get Josh Rosen. All they all
they're really doing is recreating the Arizona situation from last
year by throwing him out there. So you think you
agree with me that they're kind of protecting you. Absolutely,
there's a suspect offensive line, and I say suspect at best.

(01:00:44):
So why aren't they doing the same thing for Kyler
Murray and Arizona? That's what I'm asking you. If you
know you have a bad offensive progression, what's that? What's
your question? I said, why aren't they doing that in Arizona?
What they have a suspect offensive line. They're gonna let
Kyler Murray get pounded this year. Well, Kyler Murray has
a little bit more juice in his legs and Rosen

(01:01:06):
high so you can make a little bit more happen. Okay, Chris,
I don't think. I don't think Arizona believes they're as
bad as most people do, so I don't think, but
I'm not sure. I think that's my theory. Is what
Chris was saying is that I think they're protecting Rosen.
He's gonna be out there eventually, but he won't have

(01:01:27):
to take sixteen games worth the punishment. But it also
could be that I still don't think either way. I
don't think they think he's the quarterback of the future,
you know, Rob, even if they're protecting him, I also
think that they they got their eyes on Tah and
some of these other guys in college. Okay, definitely be interesting.

(01:01:49):
Chris will appreciate the phone call. Thanks eight seven seven

It's always fun to bring in our next guests. He's
an NFL Hall of Famer, one of the best defensive

(01:02:11):
backs to ever do with Ride Woods and Ride. What's happening? Man?
Are you? What's up? My brother? Some other mothers? Did
you have a good labor day? I did. My daughter
is in town and she did all the cookies. So
I just step back and maybe some ribs and some
and whatnot and enjoyed it. Man. I can't get better

(01:02:33):
than that. Man, that's what it's supposed to be about. Family,
some food, and uh, you know, tick back. All right,
So we're gonna put you on the spot from the beginning.
Ride obviously. The season starts Sunday. Give me a bold
prediction for this season. A bold prediction for this season, team, individual, whatever, Well,

(01:02:57):
I think the deeper than I'm gonna give a couple
deeper than rook of the Year is gonna be at
Oliver Buffalo. I think he was under I think he
was under used when it was at Houston. Um, I
think you know he's gonna he's not gonna be in
that zero tech, the zero technique. He's gonna be shaded.
So I think, uh, you know, he reminds me of
all those interior rushers throughout the league has had over

(01:03:18):
the history. Uh, he has that body type. I think
he has that twitching side. So I think putting him
out of Shade three technique, it's gonna fit him more
so than he did in college. Um. I think again,
I think the offensive MVP, he's going to be my
homes I think the second year to this system, I
think I don't know if he'll have fifty touchdown passes,

(01:03:39):
but I think he'll be in the mid forties. Uh.
You know, taking Shady McCoy there. Uh, Andy Reid's gonna
know how to use him. He knows what he's good
at and what he's not good at, so he's not
gonna put him a situation where he doesn't play good football.
I think one of the best defenses in the league
this year is going to be the Baltimore Ravens. I
know a lot of people. They got rid of some veterans,

(01:04:00):
but they're younger, they're faster, they're quicker, they got playmakers
at all three levels. Um, So you know, I'm excited
to see what they got to do. Um. And I
think the Kansas City Chiefs are going to represent the
AFC in the Super Bowl this year. Um, and more
so than anything, you know. I know, I know Frank,
I know Frank Clark is there. But I think Steve Spagnolo,

(01:04:21):
being the youth of the coordinator, I think he's the
difference maker for this football team. I think he's gonna
be more aggressive. He's gonna let his players play. He's
gonna let them guys bring it on uniqueness into their system,
and he's gonna allow them to make a lot of
plays because he likes to be aggressive. So I think
he's gonna be the difference maker to make them get
over the hump and get to the Super Bowl. Is

(01:04:42):
and we're still a coach there in Kansas City, order
I miss something. Oh, I'm sorry. He's the head coach.
I'm he's not the deep of the coordinator. I'm just
playing because he never wins a big game. But I
want to ask you what we you know, get ready
to start this season. Who has more to prove this
this coming season? Is it Cam Newton or Jimmy Garoppolo?

(01:05:06):
Who has more to prove? Oh, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jimmy, G
I mean Cam, listen, Cam, He's been the MVP. Um
he's please please, played extremely well. He got his team
to a Super Bowl. Um he was. He was more
efficient and throwing the football last year under North Turner.
I think that would increase for his football team. I

(01:05:28):
don't think he has anything to prove. And plus the
closer he wears week in and week out are probably
the best in the NASCA Football League. So he has
nothing to prove. But you know, you wouldn't be caught
dead in that stuff, right, that is true. I didn't
say it was for me. I didn't say it was
for me. I'm saying this for Cam. Cam looks good
at it. I wouldn't look good in it. Nobody look good.

(01:05:49):
But hey, but let me think about it. Jimmy g
they trade Jim, They trade Jim to San France. He
gets hurt. Everybody thought he was gonna be that guy.
Everybody thought he's gonna be the next Tom Brady. It's
hard to do, man. It's like I don't remember in
the modern era, or a quarterback plays four or five
games after he takes over four his backup or for

(01:06:12):
the starter, and then he becomes a perennial Pro Bowl
A or another team. It's hard to do in the
National Football League. You know, I'm hoping because I love
John Lynch, I'm hoping successor John Lynch's team, But that's
hard to do. I just don't know if he can
be that quarterback. I think he has a lot to prove.
He has to be that guy this year. If they
don't get to the postseason this year, there's been a

(01:06:33):
lot of question marks if he's the future franchise quarterback
for the forty nine. One more thing on Cam and
Jimmy g what's the worst? Look what Cam wears or
sporting a sporting a point start a restaurant in publicly
the point star man point star. Come on, I mean,
come on, you can't walking to you walking to the

(01:06:57):
club with that. No man, that was a quarterback in
the National you know him, and no way you're supposed
to be sporting that in public. Everybody was in love
or what? That's crazy? He might be in love. You
never know. Wow, all right, um, what do you think it?

(01:07:19):
Did you Davion Clowney trade? I mean you so you
pay your Davion Clowney seven million in trading? Really it's quick, like,
I don't This is what I don't understand about. Listen,
I like O'Brien. I know they don't have a GM.
I know they're training this new thing. If this is

(01:07:39):
the new thing, and for them, that's not gonna You're
not gonna win it. Just it just doesn't you do that.
You give a guy seven million you're trading and then
to give away your you give you away your their
first round next year, your first round of year after that.
I mean, it's just my mind is blown. My mind

(01:08:01):
is blown about like this, the the stuff that they do,
and they did um with with that trade. I just
don't understand it. But you just said it. They don't
have a GM, and I don't know this new math
that they're doing. But I think, uh O'Brien has too
much control and and and there's an issue there. That's
why you need two people in each job. You need

(01:08:22):
a guy in each job. I really believe. I mean, oh,
Brian's comer from the Bill Belichick tree, but there's only
one Bill Belicheck, right, most of those guys haven't panned
out from that trade. That that is true too. But
I'm saying just in general terms, the full range of
being a head coach and the general manager it's hard

(01:08:45):
to do. It's hard to do, it's hard to be
a just a head coach, and it's hard just to
be a general manager in the National Football League. And
you know, Bill is really the only person who has
kind of gotten right. And they still, you know, because
there's a lot of say, a lot of sway and
what they do over there. I know a lot of
those guys that come from under that tree want to

(01:09:06):
have that same credibility or that same power over the
course of time. But man, if you're not winning six
Super Bowls, you can't have that power right right, Rod,
you mentioned the Ravens defense. You thought it would be
tremendous this year. Lamar Jackson, what do you expect from him?
I'm just I mean, I've never seen it. I don't know,

(01:09:27):
none of us have ever seen a guy run as
much as he has and stay healthy right as much
as he's expected to and stay healthy, especially a guy
that's small. Do you think it's gonna be a big
year for him and that he'll be good enough for
them to get into the playoffs? Are healthy enough? I'm hoping,
I'm hoping that that they all learned that, you know,

(01:09:52):
you can't run all day long. In the National Football League.
There's a lot of fast guys. Michael Vick has been
the fastest quarterback I've ever scene and my timeframe of
watching the National Football League, and and Mike would out
run angles on players and defensive players, even fast defensive players.
And he got caught because when you running down to

(01:10:13):
the right side and you put your foot in the ground,
you come back left thinking that you got past the
defensive end on the right side, the left hand side
defensive end is chasing you down, and now he hits you.
And and he's not as big as Michael Vick, you know,
he's a smaller guy. So I would I would hope that,
you know, because I believe that the the Balton Ravens

(01:10:35):
is going to play better defensively. But Lamar Jackson, if
he learns how to throw the ball within the pocket,
not always relying on the athletic ability to make plays
with the seat, but believe it in your feet and
getting some uncontested first down or getting some unscheduled first
downs with your feet, it's going to help this football team.
But he just can't keep taking shots. He can't keep

(01:10:56):
taking those opportunities are running the ball because sooner or
later he's gonna get got and he's gonna get hurt.
All right, dare you have it? Man, Famer Rob Woods,
and go back to eating some ribs and Brits. Man,
I am I got. I got a couple more ribs
on my plate. I'm I'm gonna clean those off and uh,
watching lot of college football. There you go. All right,

(01:11:18):
appreciate you, Thanks a lot, as always. All right, fas
gonna talk to you all right later. We are about
to hear some of the weirdest stories in the world
of sports with our latest edition of Sources Say It's
the Eye Couple. Keep it locked on Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple
with Chris Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm

(01:11:40):
Eastern four pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
iHeart Radio app. It's the Eye Couple of Chris Brussar
and Rob park on a Magic City Monday, and it's
time folks for sources say check check check. Sources say
these two have been covering sports nearly three decades. I

(01:12:02):
will say this, Let's put the big Jay journalist to
the test. Its sources say, that's right, it's sources say
on the Odd Couple in Fox Sports Radio, where I've
got a bunch of stories for you guys, and some
sources have been telling me these stories, and you guys
are gonna say whether or not they're real or fake.
I've been told that Rob Parker won last week, so

(01:12:25):
he's going to get to go first. My sources say,
I actually remember last it was. It was it was
a blowout last week that my sources real or fake
on that one. Yeah, that was lying, sources say. Clippers
big man Montrez Harold has signed a deal to become

(01:12:47):
the new face of the popular TV workout, The shake Weight,
Rob or my source is good the shake Weight shake Weight.
I think somebody just signed that, but not him. I'm
gonna say false. Chris, I'm gonna say that that's true.
You sit on a throne. The route continues to stop

(01:13:10):
the game. He's bleeding from all orifices, stopping a game.
It is, it is. We got plenty more to go,
my sources say. Former NFL tight end turned film producer
Roland Williams is being accused of scamming investors out of
fourteen million dollars by pretending to have a Netflix deal

(01:13:31):
for his new movie. Chris are, my source is good
on this one. I think that's true. Rob. I think
it's true as well. You sit on a thro I
said it with such confidence that Rob, follow No, I
didn't follow you. I thought it was true. What happened
somebody else? Was it? Somebody else? Uh? No? Or you

(01:13:53):
just make that up? Just made it up. Wow, you
guys are shifting ry something else? Oh well, one nothing, Rob,
right now. My sources say the tennis umpire who called
the Wimbledon's men's Wimbledon Men's final was fired last week
for talking to the media about it. Robb Or, My
source is good on this one. True on this one, Chris,

(01:14:16):
I do think that's true. Oh, yes, yes, that is true.
So two one Rob, all right. My sources say a
high school football player in Louisiana went viral over the
weekend after it was revealed that his birth name is
the coldest to ever do it, Crawford. Chris are, My
source is good on this one. Wow, the coldest. It

(01:14:47):
Isn't there like a limit to how long a first
name can be? I believe I think some people would
do that. I'm gonna say true I'm I'm gonna say, ah,
but just sound like it would be good. But I'm
gonna say false. Oh, ever do it? That's his name.

(01:15:08):
The Coldest is his first name. To Ever do it
is his middle name. To tie right now, keep better
make the NFL with a Division one football with a
name like that. My god. My sources say that's like
Clinton Dicks right, Yes, exactly. My sources say. Ohio State

(01:15:28):
has added new vending machines in their home stadium which
will dispense ready to eat packs of bacon. Robert, it's
a good idea. Whether it's true or false. I'm gonna
say that that's true. Bacon is a big seller. Now,
ready to eat bacon? Absolutely, that's true. Is that true?
Ready to eat bacon is a thing? Yeah? Yeah, you

(01:15:48):
can union that store. I'm still gonna say false. Oh
I need to eat? Yes, they have it in the supermarket. Chuse,
I've seen it. You ever had it? No? I like
to bake. Shouldn't be ready to eat? Yeah? No, that
cook it. It's already cooked. I've seen it another winter,

(01:16:10):
Rob Parker, it doesn't matter. I couple Next, be sure
to catch live editions of the Odd Couple with Chris
Broussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern, four

in work on Labor Day and it's all good because
we love what we do. Absolutely we wouldn't want to
be having any other way, no question of yes. And

(01:16:53):
in less than thirty minutes will be joined by Dan
walk In. The National Sports Colonists for USA Today covers
college sports for them, so great college football weekend. That
was opening weekend, of course, and right now, Rob, you
brought up the Notre Dame game when they scored the
first touchdown, But it's fourteen. All they're in a dog

(01:17:14):
fight with Louisville, which is surprising. I mean, wow, Dames
ranked number nine, what they were expected to do. But yeah,
they are unranked, so not much right, not much unranked
and they're in this game. There's a there's a ball
game going yep. And Notre Dame has its quarterback from

(01:17:34):
last year, Ian Book, who led them to the playoff.
Last year they got hammered. Uh it was it was
a sorry performance, but he got them there. But right
now they're an opening game. They're in a tough one.
So we'll see how this plays out. So we'll get
to that with Dan Walking. But speaking of college football,
rob there are many storylines this season. I mean, I

(01:17:59):
think Trevor Lawrence the many people think he's the best
quarterback in the country, as good as Twa Taga Viola
is in Alabama Philosopheople think right, I don't even know
I said it right from now on, it's to I
just had that first reference. You know, whateverybody does. I
know you just trying to get it out there, like wow,

(01:18:19):
but whatever happened to Bill Smith and Sam Jones, right right?
But anyway, Trevor Lawrence, he didn't have a great opening
game for Clemson. They won, but he threw two picks
I believe in a touchdown or you know, but he struggled.
His running back, Travis Aten was great and he put

(01:18:42):
himself in the Heisman Trophy race. I think he had
three touchdowns a ninety yard or another one for over
forty yards, had over two hundred yards rushing. So that's
one storyline. Another though, is Jalen Hurts versus twa tag
of Viola. All right, and huh, of course you know

(01:19:06):
the history, Robbing, everybody knows it. But Jalen Hurts the
freshman sensation at Alabama sec Rookie of the Year, leads
Alabama to the National championship, and his h twas a
backup comes in. Jalen struggled in the first half to yeah,

(01:19:29):
and TA was sensational led him to the National championship
the next year. Tour is the starter. Jalen with a
lot of class, stays there, ends up graduating at from Alabama.
That's very impressive, but he has a year of eligibility. Yes,
so he transferred to Oklahoma. And now, I mean, you

(01:19:50):
couldn't ask for a better storyline. Now he is in
following in the footsteps of the last two Heisman Trophy
winners Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, and now he's the quarterback.
And I gotta say this, Rob, I don't know if
you saw that game, last night against Houston. But Jalen
Hurtz looked sensatious. I saw all the highlights and I did,

(01:20:14):
and he sure did. I mean, he was spectacular on
the ground and through the air, three hundred thirty two
yards passing one hundred and seventy six yards rushing. That's
over five hundred yards combined. And he threw for three
touchdowns and ran for three more six touchdowns. I mean,

(01:20:36):
it was incredible. And then Tuah was I can't say
just as good, but Twa was twenty six for thirty one,
three hundred thirty six yards passing four touchdowns. Both of
them did it in less than just under three quarters
of work, basically three quarters of work. Right, I'm gonna

(01:20:59):
throws out to you, Rob, which quarterback would you rather have? Uh?
The only reason I would, I would say too us.
From this damnpoint, If Jalen Hurts was was that all that?
Why would he still be he graduated? Right? Why why
would he still be having to play another year? If

(01:21:22):
people thought he was that talented led a team to
a national championship, wouldn't he have been able to go
to a to a team and be drafted? No, you're right,
I mean he remember he didn't play lash No. But
but I'm just saying, but but I hear you off
of that is what I'm saying. Uh, the idea that
you got benched first of all, right, that you want

(01:21:43):
national championship and you got bench for somebody else, and
yet no one looked at you and said, well, dude,
you don't have to go play another year at college.
We know what you can do. We've seen what you
can do. So it's obvious that it's too uh to me. Yeah,
I am with you as happy as I was for
Jalen Hurts because from all you know, the stories and everything,

(01:22:05):
he's a great kid. As we said, he graduated, which
was impressive, and he's mature to be able to do
what you said, which was to stick around and despite
and cheered. Right, Yeah, I remember he came in two.
He came in last year for two in the second
half and led them to that victory over Georgie. And

(01:22:25):
that's what I mean, right, Like, like he's done enough
that people have seen him play. Right, Well, here was
the question though, can he throw? That's why he got
That's what I'm saying, Right, he can throw. I would
go with two of because he can throw. I actually think,
you know, and we talk about Dak and uh, I

(01:22:47):
like Dak. I like him better than you. And the
reason I like him is because he's not the greatest pastor.
I mean, he's he's obviously adequate, but he has what
I view as the intangibles. He's a winner, he's a leader,
he's liked in the locker room. I think he's high character.
And I think the same thing is true if Jalen hurts.

(01:23:07):
I'm not sure if Tuah has the intangibles? Can I
can I throw this out this comparison, it's kind of
like Dak versus Carson Wentz. Now, I would say, as
you I know, would say, Carson Wentz is clearly the
better passer of the football. You know, clearly most people

(01:23:29):
would rather have Carson Wentz. And I think he's clearly
a better passer, no doubt. And he may have the intangibles,
but we haven't. We don't know yet. I think Dak
has those intangibles. He's obviously proven he can win to
some degree in the NFL. And Carson, even though he
had that great second year and they did win, and

(01:23:50):
you say it a lot, and it's true, he was
going to win the MVP. He was, but since then
for whatever reason, it was only one year last year,
but you know, they struggled under him for whatever reason. See,
my pushback would be, I don't see Dak ever winning
an MVP. He's not that kind of quarterback. Like I
don't where I tend to. I tend to agree with that,

(01:24:12):
you know what I mean, And it doesn't mean that
you can't. I don't know that he can't win a
Super Bowl, right, I'm not saying that because we've seen
lesser quarterbacks win. If you have the right defense, and
if you have a running game, and if you have
all the pieces, and all they need for you to
do is not make the bad play, do you know
what I mean? Not turn the ball over in that
bad He's better than that. I'm just all I'm just

(01:24:34):
saying that you could still win, right, I'm just saying
you could still win. Doesn't mean you can't win. But
I can't see him winning an MVP the way I
can see Carson wins, putting together season and winning an
MVP or two by the time he's No. I agree
with that, and again, and I think that is I
think that's a pretty fair comparison to a clearly the

(01:24:56):
better passard, no doubt about it. But does he And
I'm not saying he doesn't have those intangibles, but we
just don't. We haven't seen it like we've seen it,
and it hurts. Even when Hurts was a starter at Alabama,
it was more. And he's the first freshman to start
for Nick Saban, a Nick Saban coach team. It was

(01:25:17):
a lot of it. Rob was the intangibles. You remember
the stories. I mean, he's such a great kid. He's
a great leader. This teammates love him. He wasn't a
great passer, but he could run the football, you know.
So I think it's a very even comparison to Dak
or Carson Wentz. And I'll admit I like Carson Wentz

(01:25:40):
better as a passer. Again, I do. I wonder about
the intangibles, but I like twa much better as as
a passer as well. I just don't have I'm not
certain of the intangibles like I am on Hurts and Dak.
See I'm not. You know you normally when you talk
about intangibles, because they don't you're talking about players that
don't have the ability to fly out ability you can't have,

(01:26:05):
but like Tom Brady. Yeah, but I don't think. I'm
not saying tom Brady clearly has ability. But I also
think the intangils are a huge part of his story.
But I still I'm still about talent. I want talent first,
and I get all the other stuff. I want a
guy I was able to make the throws that need
to be made and different things. And I'm just saying

(01:26:26):
for me, I love I saw where the Eagles were
headed with Carson went It's unfortunate and it derailed his career,
and it gives people a chance to pick at it.
But it's been right, I mean the same. I'd admit
he wasn't out individually. He may have been okay last year,
but the team wasn't moving under him. Yeah, but I'm

(01:26:47):
not so sure how if he was all the way
healthy or whatever. I think this year you'll see a
big difference. Um, you know, with him being healthy and
the team and the roster. I expect him to win
the NFC East. I expect him to win twelve or
thirteen games. I really do. I I think Carson Wentz
if he's he's back, he's healthy, and with what they

(01:27:08):
have going. I think this might be the deal. You'll
take a look at him and maybe you'll change your
mind about how good he Well. I like him. No,
I know, I'm not saying you don't like him, but
but I'm I think maybe all that other stuff will
will will also You'll just look at him and go,
this guy is just he is what they think he is.
That's why. Um, you know they gave him the money.

(01:27:30):
Uh you know they signed him to the big deal. Uh,
they moved Nick Foles, do you know what I mean?
Like all the reasons why they didn't go, well, let's
hold on the Nick just one more year. We're not
sure now they were like, no, thank you, Nick. You
were great in the super Bowl. You did everything we needed,
you know what I mean. But but our guy in
our future is this guy's gonna be quarterback for the
next ten or twelve years. Now. I hear you, and

(01:27:52):
I'm and I'm with you. I mean, We're gonna do
our preseason picks on Wednesday, but I'm with you in
that I think the Eagles will win that division. And
to do that, obviously, Carson Wentz has to have a
big year. So I do like him a lot. But
again I wonder and I like to a lot, but
I just want to see those intangibles because there are
great quarterbacks rob that I wouldn't say half the intangral

(01:28:17):
They got all the physical tools but don't have the intangibles,
and they don't win quite as much as you would
think they would with their talent. Now i'd love a
quarterback like that just because they do have so much talent.
But I think, you know, Jalen Hurts clearly has shown
those qualities that you want in a quarterback in the

(01:28:39):
in the head. So we'll see, but it it's gonna
be something fun to watch all year. I was not
as excited about Hurts when he went to Oklahoma. I
didn't think he could. I don't think he could throw
it as well as Mayfield and Murray, and I don't
I still don't think he can. But he certainly looked
good last night against Houston, so maybe he'll prove me

(01:29:00):
and other people wrong. But it's gonna be fun to
watch all years. So we're gonna throw it out to
you guys eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox. It's
your turning away in and this is a big one.

(01:30:05):
Jalen Hurts or Tua? Who do you want to be
your quarterback in college football? All right? Let's kick it
off with Clint in Knoxville. You're on the Odd Couple
of Fox Sports Radio. What's up Clint? Hey, guys, love
your show, love the discussion topic. Thank you if you
all have out here. I think I think with this
you I think what too many people try to do

(01:30:28):
when they when they discussed this is they look at
how is it going to translate to the NFL. And
the reason I say that because the buddy of mine said, oh,
Trevor Lawrence's he's amazing, He's gonna win the Hidsman. I
told him, I said, I said, Trevor Lawrence is probably
not at the end of the year, probably not going
to be the favorite to win the Hidsman on his team.
And the reason me it's called Travis etn I mean,

(01:30:49):
he's just a stud him and the boy from you thought,
all right, I said, I said, you take a look
at this. If you take a look at Jalen Hurts,
in my opinion, he is he should be the would
win the High ben. Now, if you look back at
his film at Alabama compared to now at Oklahoma, um,
how he was throwing the ball. That's not he was

(01:31:10):
not making those throws at Alabama. I mean, he just wasn't.
And that's not I would take him over to it.
That's not saying that I think he's going to be
a better NFL player. If you look at college football,
if you have a dual threat quarterback, that's going to
help you out much more in college than at will
the NFL. It's such a different level when you get

(01:31:31):
to the NFL, with the speed of the corners and
safeties and and even the linebackers that that a pocket
passer can really go a long way. But uh, look
at somebody like um, oh gosh, Russell Wilson. He's he's
obviously he's at a different level. H take the boy
up there at at the Ravens. Yes, he was making

(01:31:54):
throws in college that were we would It was jaw dropping.
It was unbelievab What what I can't Clinton? I let
you keep talking about love. You know what is unbelievable
is these guys who are who are great in college
and and then they you know, like Tim Tebow and
I know he ran the ball a lot too, but

(01:32:15):
then they get to the pros and they can't do it.
Like like, I just can't shows you how different I think, right,
differ in a good point? Yeah, definitely a game. Yeah,
it's it's such a different game and the speed. You
may wait, look at Vince Young, phenomenal in college. Go ahead, Clinton,
you're making good points. I agree, I mean a lot.
Trevor Lawrence, everybody loves him at the next level. But

(01:32:39):
you know, I mean Peyton Manning. He was great in college,
but he was you know, he never won a national championship.
You know, Dan Marino was foot five, you know that. No. Yeah,
and he was great obviously in the pros, even better.
But it doesn't always. You know, the games are different.

(01:33:00):
I think I think somebody that you can took and
look at that and look at it as the opposite
way as what people are saying, Oh this kid, he
will not right now. Obviously he will end up being amazing.
Is Daniel Jones playing at Dude? You look at his dude.
He doesn't run, he doesn't He's a pocket passer. That's
what he does. Now, it's translating. He had his preseason

(01:33:20):
games were great, but um, it's just simply how it
translate over to the NFL. And and again the speed
is just at a different level for the corners, for
the safety, for the line defense in general. Um, it's
just a different game. Now with that being said to it,
compared to Jalen I think how I don't want to

(01:33:41):
push by this right here, Lincoln Rowley, how he has
that offense that is a perfect fit for Jalen Hurts. Also,
by the way um he's he's going to be, in
my opinion, very successful. It jump beat ups in foul.
I would not be surprised off Jalen Hurts average is
two fifty passing and seventy five. But too, we're Clint,
thanks for the insight. Man, really good defense. You can

(01:34:04):
tell he watches college football big time, right right right,
But I just wonder on the next level you think
he's You think he's a next level nobody's talking about
is although too it's only six one, but Tua is
next level just because of the way he throws it.
But I'm right to you hurt talking about him. No, no,

(01:34:25):
not at all, no zero. He will have to impress
people this year and even when even if he does
average two fifty to three hundred yards passing the game,
there will still be skeptics because we just haven't. That's
not what he's viewed as. That's not his brand right now,
you know what I mean? His brand is running quarterback

(01:34:47):
with the intangible's great kid and all that. You know,
but I think he would be a late round draft pick.
If he has a great year, maybe he wins the
highest man. I think he's still be a late round pick. Um.
You know, maybe like a Dak you know that type
of guy. But yeah, he's got to work on his throwing.
And Lincoln Riley rob a lot of people. You know,

(01:35:09):
his name has been mentioned. We know that, Uh, Dallas,
if they don't have a big year, there could be
a coaching change there with Jason Garrett and Lincoln Riley's
one of the names has kind of been thrown out there.
I can see that because of where the game is
moving and offensively and throwing the football. And definitely anybody
who can put points on the board is going to

(01:35:32):
be valued, whether you're college coach. Uh, it's just how
you perceived. Uh. You know, under most situations, Chris Kingsbury
shouldn't have been hired, as shouldn't have got a job
from from his from what he did in college. But
that just tells you where they are. People of the

(01:35:54):
You know, the league is a copycat league. They see
what the Rams were able to do with MC and
say this is where we go, and you know, we
need to have a young, innovative guys who can you know,
score points and and change things up and not the
same status quo. And that's why that's why we are

(01:36:16):
where we are with these guys. No, you're absolutely right.
You're absolutely right, and it won't change unless Kingsbury fails
miserably right, that's what we take McVeigh. You know a
lot of people think the Rams are gonna fall off
this year. I'm one of those. I don't know, and

(01:36:37):
I know it doesn't seem to be fair because they
lose the Super Bowl. They lose thirteen to three. I mean,
that was like one of the greatest scoring offenses ever.
But my thing was, this is just a different feel.
I don't know, Chris and I could be totally wrong
and they could score forty points in the opener and
I'm I'm wrong, but there's just something that doesn't feel well.
I don't know if it's the girly question in my

(01:36:59):
head because when girl's wife that team is do you
know what I mean? When girls white, it's hard to
look at them and don't think that they're not going
to score. But I don't know, was that are people
catching up to him? Where people still maybe you know,
the first two years of Sean McVay. And and now
that they've got enough film on him and knows what

(01:37:19):
he does, do they do they counter it this year?
Do they change it? Do they stop him a little bit?
I don't know. No. I think you're I think you're
making great points. Um. I mean look at Chip Kelly, right, Chip,
They figured Chip Kelly out. That's a perfect exam hotness.
You remember that, right, right, And he came into the NFL.

(01:37:40):
It was hot right away ten and six back to
back seasons with Philadelphia and that doesn't happen that often
ten and six or first two years coming out of college. No,
and now not only is he you know, obviously his
last two years in the NFL he struggled six and nine,
then two and fourteen. But now I mean he's getting

(01:38:00):
it done at UCLA. I mean they are looking. I
did think rob when Chip Kelly went to UCLA, I
expected them him to have great success and bring that
program back to prominence. And it has been terrible so far.
Right now, It's gonna be interesting how that plays out.

(01:38:21):
And maybe what he was doing and they caught out, right,
they figured it out in the beginning. It might be hard,
hard to figure out, but then eventually people you know that,
people people watch enough to say, Okay, we need to
do this, So we need to counter that, and I
think they've caught up to Chip Kelly. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard

(01:38:43):
and Rob Parker week days at seven pm Eastern four
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
We are pleased to bring in the national sports columnists
for USA Today covers college sports for them, Dan Walking, Dan,
what's happened to the Eye Couple? It was up, guys,
We're great. We got a lot to get to. I've

(01:39:04):
got a lot of questions for you. I want to say,
that's real quick. What's going on in the Notre Dame
Louisville game. I mean, it's just supposed to be fourteen
all at the half, almost at the half. No, Louisville
was not expected to be able to slow down Notre
Dame's offense in this game. But you know, Ian Books
not played all that great a quarterback, and Louisville's got

(01:39:26):
a new coach, Scott Sadderfield, and this guy is really
good offensively, great play caller was light out at Appalachian State,
gave you know, some really good games to some high
profile teams, just wasn't able to close the deal. But
with better talent at Louisville, I think he's gonna be really,

(01:39:46):
really good. And they're showing signs of that early. They've
been able to run some stuff, kind of option looking
type offense. It's really caught Notre Dame on their heels. Dan.
When Ship Kelly went to UCLA a year ago, I
expected him to have great success with this program. I
know they started, oh in six last year and you know,
one three of their last what six games or whatever

(01:40:09):
it was. But what do you think is going on there?
Do you think he'll turn it around? Have other teams
just kind of figured him out or what? Well, that's
a really great question that's kind of going around college
sports right now. Is it was Chip Kelly and the
offensive innovator and genius at the beginning of this decade,

(01:40:29):
when teams didn't necessarily run that same spread type offense,
the tempo stuff that wore it down. Not a lot
of people were doing that. When Chip Kelly was really
dominating the Pack twelve in Oregon and coming close to
winning a national championship, and now everyone kind of runs
that style and maybe people have caught up with it.

(01:40:52):
Maybe Chip Kelly is no longer really that innovative and
everyone else is kind of caught up to him, and
he hasn't taken that next evolution step, which you know
in football is what you have to do to stay
ahead of the pack. So that's the question that a
lot of people are asking. We'll see. The issue is
they're just not very talented right now, and the recruiting

(01:41:14):
has not been very good at UCLA. So you know,
if the talent level isn't going to be able to
beat pack twelve teams and you're not innovating and you're
not out scheming people, then it's it's going to be
a pretty unsuccessful tenure. But it's a little early to
make that declaration, I think on chip Kelly. But I
think what we've seen is a little concerning so far. Well,

(01:41:34):
there was another football analyst who said that Notre Dame
doesn't belong in the college football playoffs. Do you buy
into that or does that not make sense? Well, look,
the college football Playoff, the committee that puts the four
teams in, they are going to evaluate you based on

(01:41:56):
the schedule, did you play and what you do with that.
Edule and Notre Dame. They're not in a conference, so
that bugs a lot of people. But they haven't been forever,
so I mean, like what's changed. Well, they play, in
my opinion, a very representative schedule. They play a lot
of Power five teams. They play you know, they don't

(01:42:18):
they don't play anybody in the FCS. Notre Dame schedule
is as tough as anyone's out there, so they have
to win their games. Like you saw last year, they
went undefeated the eye of the playoff. They deserve to
be there now. At the end of the day, they
weren't nearly as good as Clemson, but they deserve to
be in the playoffs. So I don't have a big
problem with it. M Notre Dame's independent. They're gonna stay independent.

(01:42:43):
No one is pushing them to join a conference, so
it's a little bit pointless to talk about. And dan also,
they have a huge fan base and they travel well,
let's not act like that doesn't matter. Well, they have
a national brand. They're going to contract with NBC, They've
got a deal with the a SEC. That kind of
lets them have their cake and eat it too. They

(01:43:04):
don't have to be in the a SEC, but they
get the scheduling support to play several a SEC teams
every year, so they've got the best of both worlds
and there's nobody pressuring them to change. The Part of
the thing with the selection committee in the college football
Playoff is they're gonna pick the best teams and you
don't have to win a conference championship to be considered
one of the four best teams. We've seen that, not

(01:43:27):
just with the Notre Dame, but we've seen it with
Alabama two. So they got in a couple of years
ago without winning the SEC. So it is what it is.
And unless the whole system changes, and there's not anyone
putting pressure on Notre Dame to change, they're gonna keep
doing what they're doing. It's The couple were joined by
Dan Walking of USA today. Dan Trevor Lawrence. I mean,
he was probably the early favorite to win the Hivesman,

(01:43:50):
but struggle. You know, they one big, of course, and
they're opener, but he had one touchdown and two interceptions.
What's your view and what are you hearing people are saying?
Kind of happened to him in that game one, Well, look,
Trevor Lawrence. Everyone remembers how awesome he was in the
National Championship game, and yes, that is that was an

(01:44:13):
unbelievable performance, and it showed the full range of what
his talent and potential can be. But I don't think
it's fair to expect that level of play every single game.
He's still a sophomore in college. He's gonna have some
ups and downs. It's the first game of the year.
Everyone's a little bit of rusty. Clemson is kind of

(01:44:33):
a notoriously slow starting team on offense, and they get
better throughout the year. So I don't read anything into
it really other than just a fount that they were
a little bit rusty. They still won by thirty eight points,
by the way, so I don't think there's any reason
for concern. Is that what you're calling ross thirty eight points? Right?
How about we ultimately just going to wind up with

(01:44:54):
the same usual suspect when we get to the National
Championship Game or is this going to be a different
years somehow someway, No, We're gonna end up with the
usual suspects. Yeah, yeah, you know, Alabama Clemson. Ohio State
had a good opener, and they're extremely talented. You've got Oklahoma.
Jalen Hurts was off the charts last night in terms

(01:45:18):
of the way he performed and how productive he was.
Their defense looked a little bit better. They've got a
long way to go still, but Oklahoma looks awesome and
Georgia's really good as well. So yeah, I don't think
any you know, you give me Clemson Alabama in the field,
I'm taking Clemson Alabama. There's maybe a couple more teams
who could be in that conversation. That's really about it. Hey, Chris,

(01:45:40):
let me just jump in for one more quick one
about you mentioned Ohio State. How big is this game?
You know later on went Ohio State bides the big
house and plays Jim Harball and Wolverines. I mean, he
can't afford to lose that game, Kenny. If Jim Harball
would have Who's to Ohio State at home? Well, that's

(01:46:04):
you know, that's so far down the road. There's a
lot that's going to happen between now and Thanksgiving. Jim
Harbaugh is not on the hot seat. He's not going
to get fired, but there are questions about whether or
not he is going to be able to fulfill the
kind of promise with the Michigan program that people thought
when he was hired, which is winning a national championship.

(01:46:25):
It's possible he may just not be able to do that.
I don't think it's an indictment necessarily of Jim Harbaugh.
He's not as good as Ohio State. Now, you do
need to beat Ohio State at some point. You need
to beat him, you know, once in a while. But
Ohio State's a better Ohio State's a better program than Michigan.
They've been a better program than Michigan almost throughout their

(01:46:46):
entire history, and they've got more advantages, they've got better resources,
they've got been of recruiting territory, all of that. Ohio
State has more talent. Now they have a first year
head coach, which is kind of a wild card, and
quarterback who doesn't have a whole lot of experiences of
right now, Michigan, you know, playing him at home like
this is this is a year where Michigan does need

(01:47:09):
to beat Ohio State. But to say he's gonna costume
Harbaugh's job, I think he's probably going a little bit
too far. Dan we got about a minute or two left.
Last question, Jalen Hurts. You brought him up. He did
look great against Houston. He threw the ball exceptionally well.
Do you think that this guy is going to turn
into a great passer or you know, maybe was a

(01:47:33):
great passer. We just didn't see it at Alabama, like well,
obviously looked different throwing the ball under Lincoln Riley. What's
your take on this whole thing and how to play
out over the season. Well, the one thing about Jalen
Hurts is he was the offensive player of the year
in the SEC as a freshman. And yes, most of
that was because he ran the ball as a quarterback

(01:47:54):
exceptionally well, but he also threw it too, and he's
gotten better as a passer every single year year. And
I think some of what limited him was the offense
at Alabama kind of the way that Nick Saban wants
to play and wants to win, which has been more
conservative traditionally and domake mistakes and let your defense go

(01:48:14):
win it for you. But at the same time, I
do think that something in his talent level and his
skill set has been unlocked by going to Oklahoma and
a little different system and the coaching he's getting there.
You can't deny Lincoln Riley's history of developing quarterbacks, showcasing
quarterbacks and getting those guys ready to produce is it's

(01:48:39):
at this point unimpeachable. And Jalen Hurts looks like he's
falling very much in that same category, and I think
he's gonna have an unbelievable year. I don't think we
should expect five hundred yards of offense every single game,
but Jalen Hurts is really really talented. Oklahoma is a
great system, and I think it's a really good It's

(01:49:00):
gonna produce a lot of points and a lot of success. Dan,
great stuff, man, We really appreciate the not so much.
Keep up the great work. Thanks guys. All right, man,
A piece of history made in baseball over the weekend
is further proof as to why the Yankees are not
going to the World Series. I'll explain next. It's The

(01:49:22):
Eye Couple Fox Sports Radio. He's sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four pm Pacific. It's
The Eye Couple. Chris Brussard and Rob Parker wrapping up
another great eye couple show for three hours and Rob,
let's end it off with something near and dear to

(01:49:42):
your heart. Baseball and Justin Verlander made history this weekend
by throwing the third no no, the third no hitter
of his career, and he joined Man you talk about
I mean, he's already was in an eat company. Now,
these are the pictures that have thrown three career no hitters.

(01:50:06):
Nolan Ryan, Sandy Kofax, Bob Feller, Si Young, you can
stop right there, right, there's a Larry Corkran who did
it in the eighteen eighties. I don't know if that
ball counts, you know, right. So, I mean that's the
list that Justin Verlander Lander joined, and Rob, Um, I'm gonna,

(01:50:30):
I'm gonna, I'm gonna take it a little further. We
know Verlander is an all time great and so on
and so forth. I mean, he's and he's been sensational
these last few years. He's actually thrown I think the
best baseball of his of his life, he's pitched in
his career. I was gonna say he won an MVP

(01:50:50):
and saw Young one year with the Tigers, so he
was no. He was great, But I know what you mean.
Six years old now, right, he's thirty six at he's
the oldest picture since Randy Johnson back in two thousand,
before the pitcher no hitter and and and it's been
incredible because it's on. At one point, seem like he
was finished. Dejoins me of Roger Clemens. Clemens wasn't down

(01:51:13):
as long, I don't believe, right, but remember when Clemens
was rejuvenated. And you know, I don't want to know.
I'm not accusing anybody, but Verlander definitely is rejuvenated. But Rob, look,
the Yankees have played, They've been great this year, especially
with all the injuries, but my money has to be

(01:51:34):
on the Astros. And I'm using Verlin. I'm not just
saying just because of verlander starting staff. Right, And they
got a great bullpen too, right, That's the thing, Like
I get it. You can't, especially in today's game, just
having a great starting staff may not be enough. But
when you couple it with one of the top bullpens

(01:51:57):
in the league, I think I've got a favor them
over the Yankees. Yeah, I could see you on paper,
you look at it, but there's something the Yankees were
the first team to get to ninety wins. They've been
in the mix the entire There's something about this team
when you consider everything that's gone wrong, but they have
a hell of a bullpen their rotation. He's not as

(01:52:20):
star started absolutely Chris as Houston. But I did see
the Tigers one year in the postseason. They had Verlander, Scherzer,
and Price. Right they were all three the reigning Cy

(01:52:40):
Young Award winners, which means all three of them had
won the Cy Young's Right in three consecutive years, and
they were all on the same staff. Guess what happened.
Tigers got swept in that series to Baltimore. So on paper,
I do not disagree with you. I think right now
the Yankees have something going. There's something special about this

(01:53:02):
team because they shouldn't be as good as they are,
shouldn't be in a position that they are in, but
they're there. So you would pick the Yankees right now?
I would. I would right now. Now. I'm not mad
at because you know baseball, you don't know, you just don't, right,
But that staff, and I hear you, I mean David
Price obviously at that point he was having real troubles

(01:53:23):
in the post. He kind of exercised those demons last year.
But it's gonna be fun. Man. I hope we do
get Houston, New York. Yeah, yeah, all right, it's the
I couple, Christ and Rob. We will be back tomorrow peace.
