s R. You're listening to the best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Harker. Big story today
in the NFL, Urban Meyer, who we all know, has
hired as coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. College coach, legendary
(00:42):
college coach, Ohio State, Florida, all that Utah, Utah. Yes,
he hired Chris Doyle as this strength and conditioning coach. Now,
Chris Doyle was previously the strength and conditioning coach at
IOWA for about twenty one year. Twenty years, twenty one
year or something like that. But here's the problem. Chris
(01:04):
Doyle left iowa's program after allegations of racism and bullying
surface from the players. From the players, he took a
buyout like one point one million dollars and from that,
Chris he got rewarded, Yes he did. He was like
(01:26):
they said he had incredible power as the strength and
conditioning coach. The players were saying, like, he's you know,
second in charge basically to the head coach. And anyway,
that is the guy that Irviy Meyer chose to hire
as his strength and conditioning coach in Jacksonville. I got
(01:47):
some serious thoughts, but I want to let you go first.
What do you think? Totally unacceptable? Totally unacceptable and urban
Meyers should be stopped immediately. I don't care what the
only were signed off on. I don't give a damn
about the general manager. I don't care if he vetted
him and has a twenty year relationship with him. This
(02:09):
is the good old boy network at work right here.
No way, no way, no how should the players allowed
this guy to come in and be their strength and
conditioning coach. Not a guy who, according to players, they're
supposed to be a brotherhood. Those young kids Chris who
(02:30):
came out and spoke out against him and the allegations
that ain't easy to do. That means there was an issue.
We need to listen to them. I should know. My
daughter went to I don't think it was the prim
but it was on one of their high school dances
with a young man that ended up playing football at Iowa.
(02:53):
He went there on a football scholarship. I don't know
if he came out publicly and saying anything, but he
supports the guys that did say stuff. And his mom
told me about the articles and everything that when they
came out. So so you you you heard about it
first hand? Oh? Yes, you know what I mean that
there was something going on. Yes, and I just think
(03:13):
that this is bad. This is not one that urban
Meyer is talking about. Chris, he vetted him. I know,
Am I have a close relationship. That's the good old
boy network. Everybody's telling us Chris, Oh, Eric Bienneman, you
know his past. You know that's Whybby why not getting
the head coaching job. You gotta hear that, right? I mean,
what is this terrible? I want the players? Hello? Is
(03:37):
this on? You have this Hower band together? Step up
to urban Meyer. No, we're not going to accept this.
Where's the union? Where's other people to speak out? Come on, man,
so much has changed in this country. We're gonna let
this happen. No. Christy was an actress today. Did you
(03:59):
see the one from Star Wars? She she was talking
about dealing with sold something like social media is like
the Holocaust or something. They dropped her. She's not gonna
be on on the Stars, yes, like Chip chip uh
related some situation we're dealing with now to culture or
(04:20):
something like that, right right, like like like what seriously?
This this this is worse than the Old Boy Network.
This is worse than that. We've seen a lot of
hires this year from the Old Boy Network connections relationships.
This is beyond that because this guy is accused by
(04:41):
numerous African American players of racism or at the very
least racial insensitivity. Now there's nothing of him calling players
the N word and any of that, thankfully, but just
the way he carried himself, just the way he talked
down to the players, the players felt it was culturally
(05:04):
insensitive and racially based in a sport that is seventies
percent African American in the NFL, Urban Meyer chose this
dude to hire for a strength and conditioning coach. I'm
sure there are plenty other strength and conditioning coaches who
could have got the job done. I'm sure that because
(05:26):
he's been twenty years at the University of Iowa, are
they anything special? Tell me what championship they won since
the strength and condition was so great, I mean, right,
you not. I mean even if it was Alabama Clemson
that that still wouldn't excuse it. But I'm just saying,
it's not like this dude, you know, can be that
(05:46):
great if you were at Iowa for twenty years and
your dudes getting pushed all around the field. But beyond
that role, I'm taking it a step further. Shad Con
the owner should step up right now and tell urban
Meyer you are not hiring this guy. You are not
(06:08):
hiring Chris Doyle. And if you do, if you insist
or hiring him, then there's the door. There's the door,
urban Meyer, because I don't know. I mean, again, it's
just a matter of principle, but beyond that, we don't
know that urban Meyer is gonna be a great coach.
There's the door. There is the door. You can it's
(06:32):
Chris Doyle or it is you, but both of y'all
will not be here running my team. And then if
that does not happen, then I'm with you that the
players should step up, and not just the black players,
all of the players, but at the least the black players.
Then they can step up. And here's the thing, right,
(06:52):
But it should be the owner first, though it shouldn't
even get to the players. But if it does get
to the players, Rob, then Herbert Myers got more trouble,
because how in the world are you going to coach
a team of players who strong armed you and know
(07:15):
they know that you chose a guy who at the
very least has racial issues. Whether he's the racist or not,
they know you chose him number one. They had to
They had to sit out, which is what they should do.
Sit out to get you to get rid of that guy.
(07:36):
How are you gonna go coach them? How are you
gonna have that authority? You already are used to having
all power as a college coach. You're not gonna have
that in the NFL. Have you ever had to do that,
Chris and your life, stand up for something that you
know is not right. I had a circumstance like that
at the Daily News when I was young, and I
was covering the nets and I was doing a good
(07:57):
job breaking stories everything, and Knicks Rider left to go
to the New York Post and I pick up the
newsday Chris, and in the paper says that they're going
to hire a guy from the post to cover the Knicks.
I've read this in another paper. You know how it
goes in New York. Everybody who covered the nets moves
(08:19):
on to cover the knicks. It's the nets on the
training ground first, and then you cover the knicks. Right.
So I'm like, what, wait a minute, what about me?
Who's this guy? I just kicked ass for three years
on the nets? I'm ready? How come I'm not getting
the opportunity? Sports editor was trying to hemming in hard.
You know what I did, Chris, I went over his head.
(08:42):
I went to the boss and guess what, the boss
agree with me over the sports editor. And this is
what I'm just saying is that you gotta understand where
you stand and as players man, go to that owner
and say, no way, no how. I think the players
the owners should be it should do it. On this
(09:04):
Storyity signed off on it. Did he better backtrack? Did
he better backtrack? If if it has to come down
to the players, fine, but it shouldn't. It should be
the owner. And he's a minority owner too. Can you
imagine that like a slap in your face. I know
(09:24):
he's not black, Chris, but it's just this guy comes
with this. This is the guy you're falling on the
sword for Chris as a higher. Absolutely, this is the guy. Absolutely.
I look at urban Meyer and I'm shaking my head.
I don't know urban Meyer, but my god, and I've
given urban Meyer the benefit of the doubt. We know
all the problems at Florida, we know about the Zach
(09:47):
Smith domestic violence problem at Ohio State when you supposedly
didn't know, but your wife knew what your wife knew, right,
So come on you probably, I'm sure you probably knew,
and you high you kept this dude on your staff.
I mean, and I met Irvian Myra at Fox and
he seemed like a fine guy and it was nice conversation.
(10:09):
But my goodness, do you have any morals beyond winning?
I'm serious, Like, what is going on? I'm not saying
this has to be a death sentence for Chris Doyle,
like he can never coach anywhere again. But he has
not gone through any type of sensitivity training, culturally, cultural
(10:32):
competence classes anything. He needs to be shown the way
you were doing it is wrong and you need to
change up. You need to apologize, come out and own it,
and then you can move on. But this the owners
Shad con You need to tell him no, Chris Doyle,
(10:53):
otherwise you won't be my football coach. Because I just
watched and keeping it real, keeping it real real, I
just watched two black offensive coordinators in the Super Bowl
look great. I can't get it. Todd Bowls shut down
(11:13):
an offense that no one else has been able to
shut down. Because I can do without you Urban. So
it's either you or Chris Doyle. Which one. Fox Sports

fantastic players, one of the best. Some might well, I
don't know if aybody's gonna put him ahead at Tim Duncan,
(11:55):
but certainly one of the best. They wanted, the best
handful of power forwards ever to play the game. And
uh he has a new book coming out and he
did an interview with the New York Times to you know,
obviously promote his book and get out there. And he
said something in that interview that, uh, I just can't stomach.
(12:19):
I'm sorry. I like the big ticket. I know he's smart,
he's called him a basketball savant and all that, but
I can't stomach it. And we're gonna get into it,
but first he said from Rob g Yeah, in the interview,
the question he was asked was what's your take on
the current state of the NBA game. Here's what he said.
It's a long answer. The game is at another level.
(12:42):
I know you said that you made the team with Vancouver,
but I want you to get on the court, sprint
corner to corner, stop on a dime, and shoot at three. Yeah,
he's talking to the right right. Then. I want you
to focus on how tired you are, because these players
do that for forty eight minutes. Here we're Chris getting upset.
I don't think guys from twenty years ago could play
(13:04):
in this game. Twenty years ago, guys use their hands
to control players. Now you can't use your hands. That
makes defense damn near impossible. Can you imagine not hand
checking Michael Jordan. Nah, the fact that you can't touch
players gives the offensive players so much flexibility. Defensive players
have to take angles away and stuff like that. But
(13:26):
if you have any creativity and ambition, you can be
a great offensive player in this league. All right, So
you want me to hit this first round? Yeah? No,
you go ahead, I mean, go ahead. Yeah, I'm just
gonna say. I think this happens often where you talk about,
you know, yesteryear and this year, you know, and the
(13:47):
present and and you know I've heard this used before. Oh,
Babe Ruth couldn't play today. He was a fat, pudgy guy,
do you know what I mean? Like he couldn't He
couldn't play today. But you can't really do that because
that's what guys look like back then, Chris. They were
all on the same thing. If Babe was playing today,
(14:07):
he would be under different regiment. He'd be eating different food,
do you know what I mean? So, and the same thing.
The players he's talking about that wouldn't be twenty years
ago couldn't play, No, they would. Michael Jordan didn't shoot
a lot of threes, Chris. If he was playing now,
he would shoot more threes. Don't you believe that question? No,
I mean so so, I don't buy into that you
would adapt to what the style of of play is now.
(14:30):
Just like in the nineties or whatever with the Bad
Boys Pistons, everybody had two or three you know blokes
Chris who would be able to battle you in Oakley
and the Davis brothers in Indiana. You know what I mean,
Like like you built your teams to fit the style
of play and what other people have to be Mason, yes, Oakley, Dave,
(14:50):
your McDaniel, you know what I'm talking about right well?
And you there was a place for them in the
league back then. You made some great points and this
I'm not gonna stay here, but it does need to
be said. My philosophy has always been this, the superstars
of any era could be stars of any era, meaning
(15:15):
that look, if you took Bill Russell as he was
six nine, six ten two twenty didn't couldn't really shoot,
and put him in today's game or twenty years ago,
you'd be like, where do we play him? You know,
he doesn't really handled it, he doesn't shoot it outside.
(15:36):
Like but if you gave Bill Russell or Bob Kuzy
the all the benefits players have today, the nutrition to travel,
the better sneakers, you know, charter flights, weight training, year
round play. I don't have to get another job in
the offseason. All of that better, more sophisticated coaching and
(16:00):
and and and things and video and all that. No
doubt then they would be great in any era. Bill Russell,
Wilt Chamberlain, uh, John Haveler check Larry Bird there converse
with no support, right right? I mean, I can't imagine
playing in something. Heck, remember when Jordan went to the garden.
(16:24):
I think he it was going to be his last
trip there with the bulls, I think, but I not
remember exactly what the the occasion was. But he played
rob in the air. Jordan ones, you know you sent
me and him the other day the air Jordan once
and his feet were torn up after that. Yeah, And
(16:49):
he was like, I don't know how in the world
I played in these, but you did. I think of
the school, the sneakers I played in in high school,
and I'm like, man, these things, you know, because we're
the kids, I'm right, remember, But holes in the bottom
of your shoes, yes, now, you can't wear these things out.
You can't wear them out, Chris, you can wear them
all the time, and you wouldn't wear out a pair
(17:10):
of sneakers. Yep. So so that's I think your point is.
And then people want to bring up, yeah, Jordan couldn't
shoot the three. To totally correct Rob, he would adjust
shooting far more three pointers. There's no doubt about it.
And here here's the point. Let me just make this
quick one. When Michael came into the league, Chris, he
was a dunker. When they started taking that away, what
(17:33):
did he become a jump shooter, rain shooter? Yes, in
the history of the game, Marcum, he didn't do that.
I give you another one. Patrick Ewing played with his
back to the basket, average thirteen points in college. He
became a prolific shooter for a big man, maybe the best. Ye.
So don't tell me it wouldn't you couldn't adjust. And
(17:54):
but I won't even stay there with it. But let's
just say the players as they were in the nineties
and early two thousands versus today's players. Now KG is
talking about how fast they play. Another guy is gonna
join us, you know, regularly carry Kittles who we've had
on the show, played with the nets, went to two
(18:15):
finals with Jason Kidd. He's talked to me too about man,
these dude, the game is so much faster now. But
here's the thing, Rob One, they don't play as many minutes.
You know this, Rob. There is one guy in the
league one averaging thirty seven minutes or more per night,
(18:36):
and that's James Harden at thirty eight one. Rob. When
we covered the league, it was commonplace for the best
players to play thirty eight, thirty nine, forty iverson average
forty minutes so many seasons. It's ridiculous for two Yeah,
you know so number one. Okay, if you want to
(18:57):
say the pace is so fast, they would have had
trouble playing because that's what KG was talking about. Run run, run, run,
running in shoot the three. Well, they're not playing as
many minutes. So instead of playing thirty eight, thirty nine
and nineteen, you know, nineteen ninety seven, maybe you play
thirty four to day like Steph Curry and you could
do it. So there's that all right, Then I want
(19:21):
to put it. I will give the players today this.
They are obviously more athletic than ever. They shoot the
three better than ever, and they handle the ball better
than ever. Now some of that they let them carry
a little bit, but they handle the ball better than ever.
But outside of that, I don't think there's fundamentally sound.
(19:41):
Now you might not need it as much a day,
but post entry, passes, post moves, post defense, you know
they're not that sound and that stuff. Five man basketball.
It's really driving kick, high picking roll, which leads to
a drive and kick. You don't have to even know
how to play five man basketball. But I tell you what,
(20:03):
run up running one of these you know, high picking
roll teams up against somebody that plays five man basketball,
and see what happens. How do you think the San
Antonio Spurs beat the Miami Heat, who had more talent?
They played five man basketball? What made the Golden State
Warrior so great and unique? Even before KD got there?
They played five man basketball? How about they were just
(20:26):
high picking roll, driving kick? Huh Pistons two thousand and four, Right,
I was a team played as a team, and so
there's that. But I'll throw I'd like to turn it
around rob on Kg. Okay, I get it, KG probably
saying I couldn't shoot the three like that, But KG
(20:47):
is better than bam Ou to Bayou bam out to
Bayu is like a little lesser version than of KG.
And guess what, he's an All star in this league.
He don't shoot the three. So KG with a would
have been fine with what he does. But would these
players have been able to play like this with hand checking? Rob? No, No,
(21:11):
that that Chris? That that that is the biggest thing. Defensively,
you can't do anything, Chris. I can't put you. It's
a foul. I can't how you. I can't slow you down.
You remember used to be the hand in the back
and then you had to use the bent elbow. I couldn't,
you know, use my hand. I could only like control
(21:32):
you with my bent arm. Right. I saw the whole
evolution of that when I was covering the league. It
makes a huge difference, totally, totally. And then once once
I beat you to the hoop, right then when I
get into the paint, I might get hammered. I gotta
(21:53):
worry about getting, you know, an elbow upside my head.
With these players, they have to adjust to that, Rob,
you you know it. The league, what do they talk about?
Spread the floor? Five man out, four out, five out
around the three point line. Why so the paint's open
for a drive. Well, would these guys be able to
(22:15):
drive with six players in the paint? Because that's what
it was. Look at go look at Michael Jordan's films
when he went to the hoop. It's three of his
guys and four of the other teams guys in the lane,
and you you just had to know how to finish.
You had to know how to shoot, over, under, around guys.
(22:36):
You saw that in the whole uh Last Dance documentary.
I think people got to see what Michael had to
go through and the hard fouls Chris and all the
other stuff that was a part of the game. Yep.
So I'm I'm not gonna see I'm not gonna argue
over is this better now? Is was it better back then?
But I'm just saying either era, you would have adjustment. So,
(23:00):
just like KG talked about the our players, would they
be able to adjust? Mainly it saw about the three
point line? Would they be able adjust to that? Well?
Would these players be able to adjust to the more
physical game that they played in the nineties in the
early two thousands, So it goes both ways. So I
just I mean KG said it like the dudes just
(23:22):
weren't as good back then, which I don't believe to
be the case. No, I don't. It just was a
different game, and you played, you adapted, and you would
do that now if you were playing now,
