s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Brush and Rod Harker. You know how
much I've liked Dak Prescott and you know I'm a
big intangibles guy when it comes to quarterbacks. Why is
Brady the goat? Why is Montana right there? Because of
(00:44):
the intangibles. Obviously some physical talent too, but the intangibles separated.
I've seen that in Dak. I see it in Russell Wilson.
There are others, but I've seen it in Dak. And
like that about him. The leadership, the character, the ability
to get men to follow him, to galvanize the locker room,
(01:05):
to get men to believe in themselves. But physically, I've
thought of him as a game manager who could make plays,
like a playmaking game manager. He can make plays, some
big plays here and there with his armor with his legs,
but in essence, he's a game manager and I've said
he can grow. You know this, Rob, I've said over
(01:28):
the last few years, he's in route. That was my
big praise. DA. He's not elite yet, but he is
in the route to become an elite, Rob Parker, I'm
ready to say it. Dak Prescott is an elite quarterback,
(01:49):
that's right. And last night he showed the world. This
isn't just based off one game, but still last night
he showed the world that he is an elite quarterback.
And what that means he can put you on his
back and carry you to victories even though they lost.
(02:11):
And I'm sure that's what you're gonna harp on, but
Dak Prescott is that guy now where he can put
you on his back and say let's go, fellas, and
carry you to a w quickly. I'm gonna read off
his numbers from last night and then Rob, the floor
is yours. And I know you're gonna shoot holes in
(02:33):
what I'm saying, but I'm sticking by it. Dak Prescott
against one of the best defenses in the league forty
two for fifty eight at seventy four hundred and three yards,
three touchdowns and a pick. Dak was balling and now
(02:55):
he's elite, says Chris brus Hard as usual, you're the
biggest prisoner of the moment. On National Sports Talk radio,
Chris is very quick to crown people off of a
game in which Dak lost. Being elite is not just
about putting up numbers. It's about winning as well. And
(03:18):
this is where Dak doesn't measure up. And for you
to even mention, well and knew they didn't win. Yeah,
of course they didn't win because Dak put up big numbers.
Whenever he puts up big numbers, they don't win. That's
the problem. That's what makes you elite. And you just
talked about it. Get on my shoulders. The Bucks turned
(03:40):
the ball over their four takeaways, he threw for four
hundred yards and on the road and still got an
ell only the second time in twenty five years. No,
I'm just saying you gotta do. It's about winning. And
since entering the NFL in twenty sixteen, Dak is now
thirteen and twenty. That's a three ninety three winning percentage
(04:04):
against teams that finished with a winning record, including two
and nine in the last two years entering Thursday night,
he hadn't beat anybody. He hasn't beaten anybody to be
elevated to elite status. Chris, your argument wouldn't make sense
if they won last night against the best defense a
(04:24):
year ago, against Tom Brady, against the defending champs, if
they took advantage of the takeaways and made the plays
and did what they had to. He didn't carry He
didn't put them on his shoulders and carry them anyway anywhere.
They lost. It's about winning. Don't get caught up in
this stat happy stat Padford n You had your time, lad,
(04:50):
you had your time. I'm just talking about about putting
up stats and thinking like Fitzpatrick. He has better stats
than Troy Aikman. That much mean he's better than Troy Aikman. No,
it doesn't. Dak Prescott isn't better than Troy Aikman. I
don't care what numbers he puts up. It's about winning
(05:12):
and numbers. That's what makes Tom Brady a special player.
That's what makes Aaron Rodgers because they also win. You
have to win along with the numbers. Just putting up
numbers did not make you a league. Sorry, I just
heard you defend Tom Brady America. Rob Parker just credited
(05:42):
Tom Brady. Wow, look, Rob, is Deshaun Watson elite? Is
the Shaun Watson elgue? Is he an elite quarterback? Yeah? Uh,
I would say he's an elite quarterback. They've made the
playoffs a number of times twice. Okay, but but I
may have Dallas made no no, no, no, no no, I
(06:04):
don't know about if I don't have it in front
of me. They know, I'm telling you. But the difference
I feel is when Dak has these big games that
you're talking about, they don't win. That's what bothers me
about the dak um elite status is Chris, I just
read you the record. It's not a good record. The
(06:25):
number was four about about no, I'm I'm I want,
I want the same Dak I want. You can't. You
can't have it. I want to talk about you can't say,
guy don't have it anymore on the back. I don't
have his numbers. I know what his numbers. No, you
know your tea mobile phone. I know has to keep
(06:48):
the playoffs twice. Dak Prescott has made the playoffs twice.
Deshaun Watson had his best year last year and was
four twelve. So if if, if it's all about just winning,
he ain't the lead either. So Dad has way more,
(07:09):
was way more talent and around him, and the Cowboys
are loaded. Chris, I was about team two years ago.
Now it's about the teammates and they were picked to
go to the super Bowl. That was just two years ago.
Come on, man, the Texans and Dak of the sen yourself.
They made the playoffs four out of the last six years. Chris.
(07:30):
Dak went to Philadelphia against Carson Wentz with a chance
to win the division with the game on the line.
Really no, but it's a big game, and you know
what point to be game? You know fail? He can't
play the game through zero back and look up that
stat and then the night because they didn't win last night.
(07:51):
They were playing a better team. They were playing the
defended far takeaways, Chris, when you get four takeaways in
the end, fell go get the number. You win at
a seventy five percent clip All right, because I watched
the game, let's examine the takeaways. I didn't just look
at the box score. One takeaway was a hail Mary
(08:13):
at the end of the first half. Nothing you can
do with that. The other takeaway was a fumble that
Dallas recovered in its own end zone. So stop it
with the silly looking at the box score and determine
how they played. What are you talking about? That means
that that was that Temple Bay was going to score
and instead you stopped the whole touchdown. That's a game
(08:37):
changing play. What do you mean? Yeah? And now the
field goal, it's a big way that team up and
down the field, first game back after suffering a broken ankle.
They didn't win. What you do win, it's about winning winning.
(08:57):
But when Tom Brady wins. You look at this number, burst,
what is it? Is it where you're talking about Dak
Prescott or Jause. You're not consistent. You're not Dona know
because you you're not a Jack Coud can't You can't
defend Dak on his own end all over the play
(09:18):
again one player for w and talking about Dak. You
can't because get law and I gave you are you
wods record journey. He doesn't beat any good team. All right,
we'll see, We'll see a good team. Be sure to

Let's get to Cam Newton. Rob. He did he does
this thing called Funky Fridays and he stole it from us.
(10:22):
Oh yeah, darn near right. Funky Flashback Friday, Funky Friday.
But he did it today and he advertised it yesterday.
I think it was two days ago maybe, but he said,
you know this funky Friday. You know, it would be
his first time speaking since he was released, and it
was really good, Rob. I gotta I gotta say this,
(10:45):
Cam Man. He comes off as a great guy. Him
and his dad did it right, And they're just talking
and you see his dad's got on a hat like Cam.
You know, not quite as flash, but still you can
see from the tree. Right. You don't think you would
dress him like that by accident, right, somebody in your
(11:06):
family probably, you know what I mean. You looked at
your dad growing up and you want to emulate, all right, yo? Yeah,
And it was good. I mean you you come off
of that. Um. You know, Cam's likable, like I said,
And I think he came off well. And he talked
about everything, how he was surprised when he got cut.
(11:28):
He wouldn't have mind it being the backup, but he
he had a he had an excellent reason for why
he thought he got cut. And here it is the
reason why they released me is because indirectly, I was
gonna be a distraction, because starter without being a starter.
And this is what's or in the locker rooms. My
(11:49):
aura just my aura, and and that's just and I
told you this off camera, that's my gift and my curse.
If they would have asked me, they said, Cam we're
gonna give the team to Mat. You're going to be
the second stream. We expect you to be everything and
some to guide him throughout this tenure. Okay, I woulderstay absolutely.
The truth of the matter is this, he would have
(12:10):
been uncomfortable. You have to understand you are intimidating presence.
That is true, and it comes by mirre fact of
me being me. You know, it might to some people
if they just read those quotes, or maybe even if
you see it, you might think that he's tripping, he's
being you know, braggadocio. Oh it's my aura. But Rob,
(12:34):
he's right, and we've talked about it. He doesn't sound
it might sound yeah, it might sound conceited, but he
is right. I mean that's what you and I and
many others have said. It's hard to have, at least
at this moment. Now. Maybe next year, maybe later this year,
(12:55):
it will be you know, people will view Cam Newton
as a backup. He'll looks sceptor role as a backup.
He said he would have. But easier said than done,
and maybe then he could be that. But right now, Rob,
he's still a guy that people think of as the
Super Bowl participant. He led the team to the Super Bowl.
(13:15):
I believe it was twenty fifteen. He won the MVP Award.
He's a larger than life figure. Players around the league
really like him and respect him. He's got this outgoing
personality with all the clothes and the hats, and it's
hard to have a guy like that Rob as your
(13:37):
backup because he's just he dominates, and you don't. You
backups are better what he was seeing than not heard
or or or heard not heard or seeing. To be honest,
right until you need him, you don't want to be
thinking about your backup. So I think he's right. And
again it might come off the wrong way to people,
(13:59):
but Rob, I don't think he mins it in an
arrogant way. I think that was actually the truth. Yeah,
it's just it's always weird when people talk about themselves
in that light. Saw, I'm with you. It just sounded weird,
But we talked about it before. I never believed he
was going to be a backup quarterback there, like I like,
(14:19):
if he doesn't start, then he won't be there. And
they did what I think they should have done, which was,
you know, if you're gonna let Mac Jones be the
guy then just let him go out there and sink
or swim and go from there. I don't know. I
still believe Kim is too young to close the door
(14:40):
on him and to think the longer he can, you know,
continue to practice and not take any hits and rehab
or you know what I mean, like like build up
his arm strength. There's time for him. It's not like
we just saw. We saw Tom Brady continues to play
in his forty Aaron Rodgers won an MVP at thirty seven.
(15:02):
You know, he's only thirty two. And then you know,
the NFL's funny. We saw them go out and begged
Jay Cutler to come back right he was retired. He
was supposed to start doing football games for a Fox. Chris, remember,
his wife begged him to go back and play football,
to come out of retirement. He was like luke warm
(15:24):
on it, and he did it. They're always looking for
people who have had success in this league because there's
a lot of guys out there, Chris, who just aren't
good enough or can't cut it. And so that's why
what was the other guy's name, Josh McColl. Josh McCown
has been like a backup schools. He was coaching high school.
(15:46):
Let him stay, yeah, in his hometown whatever, and then
he did his stuff on zoom. But he was collecting
a paycheck from the Eagles. He was like the fourth
string quarterback, but they wanted them around him. My point
is that if somebody big goes down, or there's some situation,
or a rookie quarterback really just isn't getting it, there
(16:07):
will be an opportunity. So he has to be ready.
If he was thirty five chrits, I'd say, no, thirty
two with a year like you know, this year in flux,
could he come back and have a workout and show everybody, Hey,
my arm strength's gotten better. I'm fully healthy. I had
a year off of not getting beat up, you know,
(16:28):
and I'm ready to go. I still can play in
this league. Warren Moon played till he was forty. Yeah,
but here's the difference. And I hear you, and you
obviously can't fully close the door. If I had to
give an answer, I'm my answer is probably that I don't.
I lean more towards him not getting another chance in
the NFL, but obviously there's a possibility of that happening.
(16:52):
He and his dad both were saying this, I'm not retiring.
I got a lot of football left in me. The
thing is, though it's not up to them, it's up
to these NFL teams. And last year, before the Patriots
took a chance on him, nobody wanted him, even his
old coach. He won the MVP, went and took to
the Super Bowl. Ron Rivera has not shown any interest
(17:12):
in him. So I think there's a few things working
against Cam besides his aura. One is that you're right,
obviously only thirty two. But I don't think you can
look at this as just the nu miracle age, because man,
he's an old thirty two, not really through fall of
his own because he works hard. But man, Rob, he
(17:33):
has taken some shots. He ran the ball nearly two
hundred times more than Michael Vick, Like no quarterback has
ever run the ball as many times as Cam Newton.
He ran it like four hundred times more than Donovan McNabb,
who was somewhat of a running quarterback. And you know this, Rob,
the referees treated Cam like he was a fullback. Hits
(17:57):
that they would throw whistles or blow whistles on and
throw the flag on defenders for hitting like other quarterbacks,
because Cam could run guys over and oftentimes would you know,
would would welcome to contact. They treat him like a
running back, and so he took a ton of shots.
There's a reason that so many of these running backs,
(18:20):
you know, they got they got so many hits on
them and they fade. Leavin Bell's not old, but he's
nowhere near what he used to be because of the hits.
So I think there's that obviously had the shoulder injury
and hasn't been able to throw the football the same
way since. So I think there are some physical things
working against him. Can he, you know, take a year
(18:42):
or two off, get that body fully right, get another trial.
Maybe it's possible, um, But I think the other thing
working against him is that, like you mentioned Cutler and mccounting,
they were they were passing quarterbacks, and most teams offense
is more geared toward their skill sets than it is cams.
(19:04):
So if like, if a guy goes down late this
season for a contender, I mean you would think, okay,
are they gonna look at Cam? They're gonna look at
Philip Rivers. They probably would look at a guy like
Philip Rivers more, just even though he's older, just because
their system probably in most cases would fit a Philip
Rivers or a passing quarterback more than it would fit
(19:28):
a Cam Newton. So I'd like to see him get
another shot. But Rod, here's the thing, I don't know
what he wants to do. Obviously wants to play football,
I guess. But he can do whatever he wants to do.
He I think he could be a great broadcaster. You
know fashion, I guess you know. Now you know, guys
have podcasts. He obviously does his own show, so he
(19:48):
could do that in the mold of a Brandon Marshall. Like,
there's a lot he can do. He shouldn't fade away
even if he doesn't play again. But I'm not so
certain that he's gonna get another shot. We'll see. Fox

listen live. Obviously, this is a big weekend, this is
when the games begin. Of course, last night we had
the season opener, and it was a tremendous game. I
don't think you could have asked for a better game.
And it literally went down to the last possession. Tom
Brady rallies the ninth of the I'm sorry the Buccaneers.
(20:34):
It was his fortieth regular season what Rob come from
behind victory, second only to Peyton Manning who asked forty three.
And it was a great game. Thirty one twenty nine,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys. So after
the game, Rob, Tom Brady and Dak Prescott, you know,
(20:56):
shake hands and chat for a brief moment, and Dak
told him after they were chatting, We'll see you guys again.
Here's Dak talking about it. Yeah, I think I told
everybody would see him again. And that's just the confidence
that I have in this group and the expectations I
have is this is a playoff team that's gonna make
(21:17):
a big push this year, and we've got to continue
to get better. And we'll make a step from tonight.
We'll get we'll find a way to get better tomorrow.
And that's the process. We're gonna stick to it. And
we've got a good We've got a good team and
good men. And yeah, I'm excited about I do think Rob.
When you watch it, Brady was kind of like, yeah, yeah, whatever.
(21:37):
Every quarterback says that to me. You know, but what
are your thoughts on this? Um you buying what Dak
is selling? Uh? No, That's why I didn't even have
them winning the division. I picked Washington because of Washington's defense,
and you saw again that was all about Dan Campbell
and uh you know Dan Camball, No, no, no, Dan
(22:03):
Kimball's allions coach Dan Quinn, dan Quinn the new defensive coordinator,
and their defense didn't didn't impress me last night. They
couldn't stop Tampa Bay for the most part. And if
Tampa Bay didn't turn the ball over this they would
have been a blowout. Chris, it would have been a blowout.
You kind of hinted at if they didn't have those
(22:24):
four turnovers. But my point is that last night was
a bad sign because that has this great night, they
get the four takeaways and they're the first team in
twenty five years on the road giving all those things
going their way and they did not win the game. Sure,
(22:44):
can they bounce back. It's only one game. I'm not
saying the season is over off of that, but that
would have been a win. We talked about it before
the game. If they were able to beat the defending champs.
Dallas was three and oh go into that game playing
the defending champs in the opener, like there was a
chance that they could have made a statement that yes
(23:08):
we are for real. Look at what we did. We
went to Tampa, we reigned on their parade then when
you know, being champed and the first night in front
of their crowd and all that, and it didn't happen.
And it didn't happen for a lot of reasons. So
until further notice, I'm gonna stick with my pick that
Washington will win the division because of their defense and
(23:31):
Dallas won't. And if I remember correctly, I don't think
I have Dallas making the playoffs. So yeah, I'm gonna
stick with that. Last night they could have changed some things,
and know they didn't. What bad teams do is they
don't take advantage of situations and they let good teams
off the hook. And that's what they did last night
(23:53):
to Tampa Bay. I couldn't disagree more. I was very
impressed with the Dallas Cowboys, and I thought it was
a great sign if you're a Cowboys fan like you.
I picked them to win the NFC leased and make
the playoffs. And I believe they're gonna make the playoffs
with a very good record because their schedule is light.
(24:18):
They don't play rob another team that made the playoffs
last year until week eleven. Now they got to take
advantage and beat these bad or mediocre teams that they're playing.
But they got a light schedule, so I think they
can really have a nice record this year. But I
bottom lines, I thought they looked good last night. Number One,
(24:39):
their quarterback had not taken a snap. It wasn't his
first series, it wasn't his first game since breaking his ankle.
It was his first snap and he went out there,
and my goodness, he played. We know he played a
tremendous game, but beyond that, it was deploy He wasn't afraid.
(24:59):
He didn't look, you know, skittish in the pocket. When
the pass rush was coming at him, he stood his
ground like he ran the ball. Looked like he had
no fear. I was actually like, oh, you know, when
he took off and ran, I'm worried because that's how
he got hurt. You know, That's how I broke his ankle,
And that was coming to my mind. But it looked
like he wasn't even thinking about that. So that was
(25:22):
a great sign. I actually think they outplayed Tampa Bay.
That offense marched up and down the field. Tampa based
punder kudos whoever that dude is, Binion or whatever his
name is. He was great. He pinned them in there,
in there withinside their ten yard line several times, and
(25:42):
Dad kept marching them up and down the field. They
only had two three and outs, and it were it
not for an a Pro Bowl kicker, Greg's Rline missing
a thirty one yard field goal and missing a freaking
extra point that I just may have won that guy game.
I say may have because points wise, you would say, yeah,
(26:05):
they would have won. But I say may have because
you know, the game's circumstances change, and you know Tampa
Bay's playing with different urgency if they're down whatever. But
they may have won that game. Here's some other things.
Rob Their offense had the ball. They won the possession
game by far. They had the ball nine more minutes
than Tampa Bay. They they were playing the one of
(26:30):
the best defenses in the league with last night with yeah,
Tampa Bay's one of the best defensives. No, I mean,
you're right, they didn't look like it last night. But
statistically and all that last going in, I'm just saying,
didn't look like the best great defense last night. No,
the defensive back they didn't. But I gotta credit Dallas
for that. I'm not just gonna give you know, say
(26:51):
Tampa Bay didn't play well. I think Dallas played well offensively,
but they without zach Um Martin, one of their best
offensive lineman rob they only gave up one sack that
through the ball fifty eight times and got sacked once.
I mean that is that is something to build on. Uh,
(27:12):
their running game I obviously look bad, but I thought
it was a good night and even defensively, I thought
the defense was much improved. Tampa Bay, we know, one
of the best offenses in the league, and weapons it's
just a freaking but but here it's just weapons all
over the place. Behold, let me finish this, weapons all
(27:32):
over the place. They held them to ten points in
the second half. But I don't see how in the
world you leave that game thinking Dallas didn't play well.
Dallas's defense, Dallas's defense which which which uh wasn't able
to stop Tampa Bay, Like I said, because the turnovers.
The turnovers changed things, Chris, and last night one of
(27:56):
them was at Hail Mary. Okay, Dallas had now tackles
for a loss, no quarterback hits, no sacks on Brady.
You can't let you can't be a defense. And one
sack on that. Okay, But I'm talking about the Dallas' defense,
which last year was a problem. If you give quarterbacks
without sacking them or making them hurry or quarterback hits,
(28:21):
you're going to lose most times. That's what I'm looking at.
I'm looking at what Tom Brady was able to do
back there. He was never under pressure and the defense
from the defense from game one, I'm just going off
a game one was not much improved. Okay, they didn't
give up forty they didn't give up forty points, but
but boy, Tampa Bay was able to do what it
(28:44):
what it wanted to for the most part. I'm just saying,
that's a game. All the points you make on Dallas
and they lost for all the point That's what fathers
defending Super Bowl. They played a better team. You could
beat anybody on. It's a better team than them Dallas.
If Dallas were going to show me something, Tom Brady's
been great. On the first game after the Super Bowl,
(29:07):
He's now six and one. He throws through over three
hundred yards. He's got now nineteen touchdowns and three picks
in those games. I mean last night two would last night, right,
But one was a hell Mary at the end of
the first half, and one was a good pass the
four net that went right through his hands or bounced
(29:27):
off his hands. The two interceptions weren't Brady's fault. But
my point is that I think Dallas look good. They
were not supposed to even be in that game, and
they had a chance to win. And if not for
a few of their own, you know, self inflicted wounds,
they may have one. So I think Dallas is gonna
run away with that division and getting into the playoffs
(29:51):
with a nice seed.
