Speaker 1 (00:35):
A man?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
How you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Hey man? What season is it? It's football season. I'm
doing great. Been football all day football, the last few days,
football tomorrow. I'm rolling right now. This is the best
time of year.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
We got a little Friday Night NFL, we got a
little Thursday was a thriller, and we had a day
full of college football. So jmart you know, listen, we
could dance around, but let's go ahead and just dive in.
There is so much to get into, and I know
it's not by the way, de Seger just gave you
all the updates. Nebraska is about to put the finishing
(01:09):
touches on Colorado. Twenty eight to ten is the score
there Tennessee, running away from Tennessee, running away from NC State.
It is a lot too a little there also, Oregon.
This is a wild, wild, wild deal that you and
I will be monitoring all night. Yeah. We came on
last week j Mart right as Oregon was putting the
(01:31):
finishing touches on an ugly win over Idaho. Well maybe
it's something about the state of Idaho because they're playing
Boise right now. Got a potato, Yeah, yeah, they sure do. Man,
you know, fear the potato. I don't know if we've
ever said that one on this show. But but Oregon
is trailing ten to seven midway through I be Actually
they're not, they're not. Did they return for.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
A touch just threw a touchdown?
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well it's on peacocks, so everybody's lagging across the country.
So I'm just gonna yes. So anyway, we'll keep you
updated on that. But let's get to you know, listen,
I know it happened a while ago, and yes, we
do have the Dylan Gabriel touchdown in studio a little
bit of delayed. So yes, Oregon is up thirteen to
(02:17):
seven extra point pending midway through the second quarter. Let's
get to what I still think, even though it was earlier,
today is kind of the most consequential result of the
day for really for both teams, and it is what
we saw. Big new kickoff Gus Joel Jenny in Ann Arbor,
the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines hosting the Texas Longhorns,
(02:41):
and Jay Martin. I don't know where you stood on
this coming into the game. I know for people who
missed it two weeks ago, Texas was Jay Mart's preseason
national champion baby or was it? Well that was just
quad right, Well, listen, I thought Tennessee or I thought.
I thought Texas would be good and I thought they
would win today. I did not think we would see
(03:04):
what we saw. The final score was thirty one to twelve,
but it is a very deceiving score. Texas had a
touchdown taking off the board early in the game on
a questionable at best, questionable at best penalty. Michigan doesn't
score until the final few minutes. It was a lot
too a little, It wasn't competitive, Texas took its foot
(03:25):
off the gas. I gotta say we can start where
you want, Michigan being really bad, Texas being really good,
which one to you is the bigger or at the
very least more interesting story.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Jmark, I mean, I think it's probably Texas, But I
mean I think that there's enough to go around to
talk on both sides, because Michigan didn't look good last
week either, and that's kind of I think. If you
want to take anything from this and say there's a
long term issue here, it is that they didn't look
good against a bad team last week, and this week
(03:59):
they didn't really look like they belonged on the same
field with their opponent, with what Texas did to them,
and on a day where and we'll be talking about
it throughout the course of this show, on a day
where a lot of pretty good football teams just didn't
bring their best effort and as a result got challenged.
Most of them escaped Michigan. I mean, I don't know
(04:22):
what effort they brought, but Texas made them look worse
than I've seen Michigan look in years. Like they manhandled
them in on their home field to the extent where
you don't even boo the Michigan squad. It's like the
big house is booing them. It's just they just weren't
good enough. They didn't have talent. They couldn't match up
(04:42):
with Texas at all. And in terms of the offense,
outside of what they were able to do running the ball,
I mean, you have Lovelin, who's one of the best
tight ends in the country, if not the best, and
he's not looking good. The quarterback didn't look good at all.
I mean, outside of like Donovan m there wasn't a
whole lot to look at from the Michigan perspective. And
(05:03):
then on the flip side, Quinn Ewers loves him some
Week two football because last year he did it at Alabama.
This year he goes and does it at Michigan. They
win the game last year and then this year. I mean,
I mean, you said, that's a deceiving score. They easily
could they were. They were five or six touchdowns better
(05:25):
than Michigan today. Like that was incredible. And urban Meyer
actually in the pregame said something that I said. As
soon as I heard him say it, I said, all right, well,
I'm going to be stealing that and using it tonight.
He said, this is going to be a great game,
which on paper, going in you thought, okay, yeah, this
is definitely going to be fun. He's like, this is
gonna be a great game, but let's not forget this
(05:46):
is a very long season.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
So in effect, let me jump in on that.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Real both these teams are going to both these teams
are going to go somewhere else from here.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Let me jump in on that really quick, because I
think Texas was awesome. We'll continue to discussion on them.
I do think context is so important with this twelve
team college football playoff because I think the default is like, oh,
you know, everybody can lose and it's no big deal
and we shouldn't overreact. And it's like, well, look at
(06:17):
Florida State after Week zero, you and I came on
Aaron said they can't block, they can't tackle, they got
bullied at the lone of scrimmage. What happened last week?
The same thing happens, And so I know that we
don't want to overreact, and we're gonna get to Notre
Dame here in a few minutes, and how much do
we react to that one? But I look at Michigan
and for a team that has Ohio State on the schedule,
(06:38):
Oregon on the schedule, I know Oregon hasn't looked great early,
but we know the talent they have in that building.
USC on the schedule, all of a sudden, USC looks
a lot different through the way we were talking about
him last time we were on last Saturday. I do
think that this is a situation where, yes, you don't
want to overreact one week college football. It's a twelve
team playoff era. You can lose two, two and maybe
(07:01):
three games if you're in one of these power conferences,
specifically the SEC or the Big Ten. But I also
look at the counter to that and say the things
that I saw today. First of all, a couple things
on Michigan. One, they don't got a quarterback. I'm sorry,
it's no disrespect. Joel and gust did a great job
of telling the Davis Warren story. We know he's overcome
(07:21):
a ton of adversity, but askar buddy Bernie Fratto, who
knows Michigan as well as anybody. The fact that this
guy is starting is probably honestly an indictment on the
other guys in that locker room. Alex Orgy was supposed
to be the starter. He didn't step up. There was
talk that Jack Tuttle of transfer from a few years
ago was gonna be the starter. He doesn't step up.
So like the fact that Davis Warren is your quarterback
(07:44):
probably doesn't bode well for the season ahead. And then
you know, I gotta go to the defense, and some
of it is Texas. I don't want to understand how
good Texas potentially may be. I also got to give
you the counter of you know, like that Michigan defense,
which was the entire program over the last decade under
(08:05):
Jim Harbaugh, was based on the fundamentals, is that you know,
maybe they didn't have as many NFL guys as Ohio State,
or maybe they didn't have as many NFL guys as
some of these SEC teams, but they never beat themselves blocking, tackling,
line of scrimmage, whatever. And I watched that Texas. There
were so many times where Michigan, Michigan just missed tackles.
(08:27):
They just weren't in the right position. And jmart you
probably know the NFL game a little bit better than
I do. You cover the Titans for years, but win
Martindale comes down from the NFL, and NFL people will
tell you, you know, like the last couple of years, it
wasn't clicking for whatever reason. So you know this isn't
the moment where we have to break down scheme and
x's and o's. I thought Michigan's blocking, tackling, and defense
(08:52):
was not anywhere close to where it's been. I don't
think they have a quarterback, and so I know we
don't want to overreact, but I think there are concerns
if you are a Michigan fan tonight.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
I do too, and I don't look at the head coach,
and I do look at the defense you're talking about
when it comes to wing Martindale. I think the reason
why the last couple of years went the way they
did because for a while it went quite well. I
believe the biggest issue for Martindale is his unwillingness to
(09:24):
evolve as the game was evolving around him. I feel
like he stayed stubborn to what had worked in the past,
and the game kept on moving, and I think that's
why the bloom fell off the rows. Now, you're right,
the angles were bad, the tackling was bad. The fundamental
just soundness that you've come to see from Michigan flat
(09:46):
out was not there. The run defense in the first
half was embarrassing, like just they couldn't stop anything. They
could not get off the field. That certainly put the
offense in a tough spot, and then the offense had
pretty much no answers when they would come out there.
But yeah, it just that Michigan team did not reflect
anything like what we've seen in the past. There's definitely
(10:08):
been a loss in talent. We knew that already. But
at the same time, you and I both had Michigan
in our twelve and I look at this, especially looking
at the rest of the schedule and say, I think
there is a better than fifty percent chance they're not
going to be in at twelve. As a matter of fact,
(10:30):
there might be a better than seventy percent chance considering
what they have, and they're just they don't look the
same in any way. And I don't look at Cheron
Moore and say it's an indictment on him. I do
think that maybe we realized this now even more so.
And I think we both said it last year. They
(10:50):
had to win it last year or it was not
going to happen for them based on the way college
football was unfolding. Just everything went right for Michigan last year,
and now you see just how difficult it can be
to win a championship in the first place.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
So I think you nailed it right there, J mart
And And you know it's weird because I'm with you,
right is you look at who this team was January
of twenty twenty four versus now September of twenty twenty four.
I didn't like when I watched that game. It wasn't
some huge indictment on sure own More to me, No,
(11:28):
it was it was you know what I said, QB
hasn't stepped up the defense. I just thought, you know,
you hire wing Martin Dale. Don't know how much he's making,
but you know it's it's certainly you know he ain't
coaching for free. I mean, you know, he's a highly paid,
highly compensated coordinator. And I will say, like, you know,
I didn't think it was a sure own More thing.
(11:49):
I just don't think they're good enough. And I think
the point that you brought up is a great one
about last year is that there were a lot of
circumstances that worked their way. Is that, you know, a
lot of it as an older team that had a
bunch of COVID seniors. JJ McCarthy. You know, I think
his college career is going to age better and better
as time goes on. I know people say, oh, he
(12:10):
didn't do anything. All I do was hand off the ball.
It's like, well, you know, every quarterback before him and
Michigan under Harball stunk, and every quarterback so far after him,
and I know we're only two games in, isn't good.
And so the only point I'm trying to make is,
I think what you said he nailed it is that
last year everything brought everything broke right for them, right
down to how about Georgia not even being in the
(12:30):
College Football Playoff? You know, number one team all season long,
fourteen playoff and listen, I don't believe Harball got out
because of some NCAA stuff. I think he knew. I
think even if they had not won it last year,
that was the year. That was the year they were
building for. Again, you have a first round pick a
quarterback in the NFL. It had to happen last year.
(12:53):
So anyway, I just bring it up because to me,
I agree with everything that you said about Michigan. It's disappointing,
But again, I just I don't know how much of
that really actually falls on sure own more. I just
think they're a team that is not nearly as good
a year ago. And I do think some of the coaching,
especially on the defensive side of the ball, where you
have a highly paid coordinator, simply wasn't simply wasn't good enough.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, look, this is why I don't. I don't subscribe
and refuse to use the word window when it comes
to teams, and especially when you look at college because
of the turnover and the way things change over last year.
Was it like you can't look at it and say, oh,
they've got X amount of time to do this. No,
they don't ask Mike Norvel how long windows last because
(13:38):
it's the exact same story there, boy, Like, I mean,
they're zero to two and they've looked terrible and their
seasons are rap Like at this stage, nobody's looking at
Florida State in any capacity compared to where they were
last year. And last year they were the oh how
did they get left out of the College Football Playoff?
And the thing that was so painful for Florida State fans,
whether they knew it or not in the moment, was
(13:59):
that was the shot. If they were gonna do it,
it was gonna be last year. Now, I don't think
they were gonna do it either way, but they certainly
had the opportunity at that point. But I mean, Norvelle
would probably like to have a different job at this point.
And like the bloom can fall off the roads real fast.
Things can change almost instantaneously in sports, especially in college football.
(14:22):
And I just look at Michigan and I say they
are behind the eight ball less than nine months after
they celebrated a national championship. That is stunning.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
It is stunning. Michigan gets frankly embarrassed on Saturday afternoon
at home against Michigan. By the way, we do have
a couple results and to say, we'll get you some
details here in just a moment. The Colorado Nebraska game
is final. Nebraska wins going away. Also, Oklahoma was on
the ropes at home. They end up surviving sixteen to
(14:56):
twelve against the Houston Cougars. They get a victory. Boise
has gone back up. They are ahead seventeen fourteen. Alabama
does run away from South South Florida. Although that was
a you know, Alabama wins forty two to sixteen.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
J Mart. That's insane considering what it was was like
five minutes left in the game.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
It was fourteen to ten going into the fourth quarter
and final score forty two to sixteen on that Onefore,
I take that back. It was fourteen to thirteen. Excuse
me going into the fourth quarter forty two to sixteen.
Your final score twenty eight points for Alabama in the
fourth quarter. Tell you what, jmart will come back. We
will talk a little bit about the Texas side of
(15:40):
the Michigan game, and then we do got to get
to the shaker in South Bend. What does it mean?
What does it potentially not mean in this twelve team playoff?
Here we'll discuss all that next Era Tors Jason Martin.

Welcome back everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Eric Torres Jason Martin
broadcasting live from the Tireck dot Com Studios. In just
a moment, we're gonna hit to the Sager. Tonight's one
of those nights the Saga is gonna earn his paycheck.
There is so much going on right now. I'm not
gonna steal his thunder because there is a lot to
catch you up on. But really quickly before we get
(16:51):
to Disaga. J Mark didn't want to talk about the
Texas perspective because again we talked about in the you know,
in the open, this was the team that to your
one hundred percent and I know it's only week two. No,
it's only week two. Don't want to overreact, but this
was the team that you picked to win the national championship.
I liked them, but was a little bit more concerned
(17:12):
about them. They lost those two great receivers, one of
which we've already seen ball out in the NFL, and
Xavier Worthy. They lost a lot off that defensive line.
I'll tell you what, man, I've been watching this sport
a long time. I don't claim to be any sort
of I have all the answers to everything. But that
Texas team, man, it looks like a complete football team.
(17:33):
Remember last year the defense was a little bit shaky.
But this year I'll say this too. You know, I've
always liked Quinn Yewers. I don't know that i've ever
loved him. Thought he was just totally awesome on Saturday
in control. Knew when to step up in the pocket,
when to step back. As I said, there was actually
a touchdown taking off the board on the first drive.
The old line dominated that Michigan D line. I could
(17:55):
go on and on, j Mart, but it's early. I
get it. But that looks like a pretty darn complete
football team to me.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
In the Texas Longhorns, yeah, again, there were a lot
of teams on Saturday that sort of eked out victories,
but three teams really stood up and showed out. And
Texas gets the highest marks because they played against an
actual football team. But Georgia, Ohio State and Texas AL
looked really good. Tennesse Yeah, well, man, tennessee'son my twelve
(18:24):
Gus Wise, because I believe in Nico and I felt
like they were being underappreciated coming into the season, and boy,
they absolutely embarrassed humiliated in Sea State in Charlotte on
a neutral site. But I like yours more. Every time
I watch him, there's something about him that just it works.
(18:44):
It feels like he is kind of a leader, but
he seems to get more confident with every game that
he's played in. He's had quite a story in terms
of how it started and how it is continuing to
go for him now. I read an article as soon
as that came was over to that said can he
become the first quarterback taken in the draft next year?
(19:05):
I don't know, but right now he's a very good
college quarterback. And you look at what they have, even
after what they've lost. They can run. It looks like
the old line can create space. They still have skill
talent at the receiving position, even with the guys that
have moved on. And then you're sitting there with youers,
and right now, I would feel, outside of maybe Carson
(19:28):
beck Owers is a guy that you would want right
now because it just seems like he's very much dialed
in he and Sarker on the same page, and he's
just not making mistakes. It seems like his IQ, his
football IQ, and the way he's seeing the game, it
does feel like the game has slowed down for him
a bit because he's just making excellent decisions nine times
out of ten. Right now.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
He is also credit and I listen. I know it's
a little bit of a talking point that has been
discussed time and time again. That O line is so
freaking good man, and like you know, I know it
doesn't make for the sexiest sports talk radio conversation, but
they absolutely bullied Michigan at the line of scrimmage one
hundred and forty three yards rushing four and a half
yards per carry. And again I think that number is
(20:12):
a little bit deceptive because basically the entire second half
it didn't really feel like they really had their foot
on the gas in that game. So Texas does take
care of business against Michigan. Tell you what, Jmart will
come back when we do want to talk about what
was unquestionably the upset of the day in South Bend,
(20:33):
the Notre Dame fighting Irish they fall, and we're going
to discuss that next before we do. Let's toss it
over the news desk first time this evening to Seger,
what is trending? My man?
Speaker 7 (20:42):
Good evening to you both. Let's start with the college
football in progress as Boise State late in the first half,
leads at number seven Oregon seventeen to fourteen. Oregon Ducks
quarterback Dylan Gabriel is nine of ten passing one hundred
and thirty three yards in a touchdown, but he's been
sacked four times, which means already this season, Oregon has
allowed more sacks than it did all of last year.
(21:05):
Northern Arizona has a halftime lead at number twenty Arizona
ten six over the Wildcats of Arne Spaniard. No, no,
not those Wildcats tonight, it's Arnie Zona.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
We need a Lumberjacks, need a Lumberjacks whatever, audio.
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Get an ax straight into the Arizona Wildcat is what's happening?
Ten six at halftime. In Tucson, number twenty five Clemson
sixty six twenty over app State. Late in that game
at the LA Coliseum, thirteenth rank USC leads three nothing
over Utah State mid first quarter.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
There's also a.
Speaker 7 (21:43):
Game on Fox TV right now with Washington State at home,
now leading Texas Tech twenty one to three mid second quarter.
We also have at Arizona State a ten to three
lead for the Sun Devils over Mississippi State early in
the second quarter. Oregon State leads se nothing at San
Diego State with about ten minutes left in the second quarter.
(22:04):
Pitt won twenty eight to twenty seven at Cincinnati with
a outscoring the Bearcats fifteen to nothing in the fourth quarter.
Nebraska defeated Colorado tonight twenty eight ten. It was twenty
eight nothing at the half. Easy wins in the top
ten for Georgia, Ohio State and Old Miss Number three.
Texas dominated at Michigan thirty one to twelve Wolverines with
(22:24):
three turnovers. In fact, Michigan on its first eight drives
just ten first downs and it was down thirty one
to six by then fourth ranked Alabama with four touchdowns
in the fourth quarter. Tonight beats South Florida forty two
to sixteen. Jalen Milrow two touchdown passes and two touchdown runs.
Next Saturday on Fox TV, Alabama at Wisconsin. Number five
(22:46):
Notre Dame lost at home to Northern Illinois on a
late field goal sixteen to fourteen. The Irish went over
two on field goal attempts at the end of the
first half, had a forty eight yard are blocked. At
the end of the second half, had a sixty two
yard are blocked. Aame loses by two. At number eight
Penn State Nitney Lyons edged Bowling Green thirty four to
twenty seven. Penn State had trailed at halftime. Quarterback Drew
(23:09):
Alar three total touchdowns, one interception. Penn State's two running
backs combined twenty seven carries two hundred and twenty yards
rushing Missouri and Utah with wins Miami and Louisville with wins.
Number fourteen Tennessee one at NC State tonight fifty one
to ten. Fifteenth ranked Oklahoma survived at home against Houston
(23:30):
sixteen to twelve. Number sixteen Oklahoma State in double overtime
beat Arkansas thirty nine twenty one. Seventeenth rank Kansas State
never took the lead at Tulane until eight minutes to go,
when they scored on a sixty yard fumble return. K
State wins the game thirty four to twenty seven. Kansas
State's defense with five secks tonight on FS one Illinois,
(23:51):
with ten points in the last ten minutes, beat nineteenth
rank Kansas twenty three seventeen, and it's been pointed out
online they stormed the field after beating Kansas.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
There you go.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
Illinois just before halftime scored on a touchdown on an
interception return that turned out to be key. And if
you watch the Iowa State game at Iowa, you're probably
seeing the final score and say, how did that happen?
Because Iowa State was completely outdone, should have been farther behind.
Cyclones trailed late third quarter nineteen to seven and still
(24:22):
beat the Iowa Hawk guys with a late fifty four
yard field goal twenty to nineteen. Syracuse beat Georgia Tech
thirty one to twenty eight. Packers quarterback Jordan Love could
miss three to six weeks with a spring to MCL
forty nine. Ers running back Christian McCaffrey was limited in
practice again with a calf injury, but he says he'll
play Monday. Number two Arena Sablenca won the US Open
(24:43):
in the WNBA. Chicago rookie Angel Reese is out for
the year with a wrist injury. The Yankees are alone
in first place again in the al ease after a
win today, while Baltimore lost. Atlanta lost at home tonight,
while the Mets won their ninth in a row, So
the Mets now lead the Braves by a game in
the race for the final ANL wildcard spot. Houston one,
Seattle lost Kansas City, and the game on Fox TV
(25:06):
scored four in the bottom of the eighth to win
four to two over Minnesota. Victories for Milwaukee and San
Francisco and the Lake game has the Dodgers ahead of
Cleveland seven to two in the top of the eighth.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
Back to you, Thank you very much, Steve de Seger.

(25:58):
one of the game that de Sega just discussed with US,
Northern Illinois, I mean, listen, certainly an entertaining game. Certainly
you know, an iconic moment end, a game, coach crying
on the field, all of that. The Notre Dame fighting
Irish fall sixteen to fourteen. This a week after in
(26:19):
our time slot, they go to Texas A and m
get the win. Great moment for Northern Illinois in this
twelve team play I'll just ask you, I don't want
to put words in your mouth and this twelve team
playoff era, how concerned are you versus how much is it?
You know, put it in the rear view mirror and
move on.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
I do think you have to keep it in perspective
because the season isn't over because of this loss. I
think that the way you can look at these now
is you lose a game like this, now, your margin
for error for the rest of the season is smaller,
it's slimmer. But if youre Notre Dame and you look
at the remainder of that schedule, all is not lost.
I think now it's just this is gonna be a
(26:59):
great story for Northern ILLINOI and the coach's emotion was incredible,
and you know all the things that the quarterback was
saying after the game about how he's never gonna forget
this and stuff. It's gonna be a great story for
Northern Illinois and it's gonna be it's gonna be more
meaningful to their program than it may be to Notre
Dame season. Now we'll see maybe Notre Dame wakes up
(27:21):
a little bit from this. There's definitely some things to
look at. I mean, Riley Leonard didn't look great last week.
He really looked uncomfortable today. So there's definitely some things
that need to be worked on at Notre Dame. But
this would have been a death knell most likely for
Notre Dame right up until this year, but because of
a twelve team playoff. And you're the one that kind
(27:42):
of I said, well, here's our lead. I remember sending
that Texas sin As the game is over, and you
said you came back with basically this topic, and I
immediately thought, yeah, you know, I didn't even think about
it from that perspective. You were dead right, like it's
not over because of the twelve team variety. If this
were four tea, there's no way a Notre Dame team
that loses to Northern Illinois on their home field in
(28:04):
Week two ends up in the College football playoff. But
this Notre Dame team easily still good.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Yeah, it's tough because I know I'm the guy that
last segment just talked about how terrible Michigan looked and
it is caused for concern and what does it mean
big picture? But again I think context does matter is
Michigan does have to go to Ohio State. Again, USC
looks better by the way. USC has taken a ten
to dohering lead over Utah State at the LA Coliseum
as we speak. And you know, listen, you still have Oregon.
(28:33):
You still have some really good teams on the schedule,
even though Oregon is not playing well right now. So
I know I just said that about Michigan, But the
inverse is Notre Dame where it's like you, not you
J Mart, but you the proverbial college football fan. You
want to freak out, Oh my god, this is a
season changing, Oh my goodness, how does this happen? Marcus Freeman?
(28:55):
What does it mean? Da da da da dah, this
and that, and then you sit there and you look
at the schedule and I think, you know, listen, there's
two ways to look at it. You could sit there
and say, well, if you lose to Northern Illinois, you
can lose to anybody. That is still very much true.
Counter is Texas A and M seems like it was
a nice win. We'll see what happens. But right now,
(29:17):
you know, outside of maybe A Louisville which is is
to to zero and ranked, and obviously outside of a
USC team, which we think is better than expected, there's
just not a lot of great teams on this schedule.
Georgia Tech, who we thought was good after they beat
Florida State, well we've seen Florida State since then. We
also saw them lose to Syracuse today. So again, I
(29:37):
just it's tough because again I don't want to completely
dismiss First of all, you don't want to dismiss it
from the Northern Illinois perspective, happy for them, their fans,
their lums, whatever. But from the Notre Dame perspective, it's
just it's not yet freak out time.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
For me.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
It does have kind of a college basketball lee feel.
You know, I remember years ago when I doing this
show with Arnie Spanier. You know, Arnie would say, oh,
why don't you want more teams in the playoff? You
love college basketball, and it's like, yeah, I love college basketball,
but nobody watches the regular season, and it's because no
games matter. And I don't think we're there yet with
(30:15):
college football. But this feels one. This one feels like
one based on the schedule that I'm just a little
bit less freaked out about than say, Michigan getting embarrassed
at home by Texas, a by Texas, excuse me, or
some of the other early losses that we've seen.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Yeah, and I think I think the reason why is
because you still look at Notre Dame and think that's
still a pretty good football team. I looked at Michigan
and I'm not so sure. And we looked at Florida
State and we knew instantly, oh, okay, they're not very good.
Like you knew it against Georgia Tech. It was a
weird scenario going overseas and all of that stuff, but
at the same time, you just knew that team was
(30:52):
a shell of what it was the season to go.
I don't look at Notre Dame and feel that way.
There's some growth and there's some things that need to
happen there. But I don't look at them and say
that's a bad team. That team looked pretty good against
Texas A and m Michigan has given me two examples
now of relatively mediocre to subpar, and Florida State didn't
(31:12):
look good. So I think it's that. I think that
the reason we're not as bothered by this is you
add the schedule to the fact that Notre Dame still
got a lot of talent. They still look pretty good
even though they lost this game. They got got they
had two field goals blocked in a game. Of course,
the last one was you know, a prayer from sixty
yards or whatever like that, so that one you could
probably eliminate that. But Notre Dame shot themselves in the
(31:35):
foot and got beat. I don't think it was because
they didn't have talent. You're looking it on the flip side,
Michigan got absolutely annihilated, and Florida State just looks terrible.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Florida State looks terrible, and again USC does look better though,
so you know, listen, and by the way, maybe who
knows maybe because of this loss tonight trip to USC
last week of the regular season. You know, if they
were undefeated, they're in no matter what. Now, Well, maybe
it's a playing game, so it is, Yeah, it is.
It is the tough balance of you want to react
(32:06):
in real time. You don't want to overreact, but you
don't want to underreact either. But this is one that
it is a little bit hard for me to get
too freaked out about a couple quick scores before we
come back and look at the rest of Week one
halftime in you Jane J. Mart the Boise State Broncos
twenty the Oregon Ducks fourteen.
Speaker 3 (32:28):
I saw a stat in that stat about their their
rivalry or their history that I didn't know Oregon's never
beaten them before. Wow, Bois's three and oh against Oregon.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Well, I remember who could forget the Lagerrett Blunt punch
punch game, So that that's one that I remember. I
think that was Chip Kelly's first game as Oregon head coach.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
To say, it just shows the Boys has been a
lot better program for a long time than I think.
Sometimes it goes under the radar just how good they've
been in the past. But in fact they're three and
oh against the Oregon is kind of mind boggling to me.
It is.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
They are three to zero against Oregon. They are up
twenty to fourteen at the half against these Ducks. Top
ten team. By the way, USC another new Big Ten team,
up ten to nothing on Utah State late first quarter
at the LA Coliseum. We'll come back look at some
of the other results in Week one, including one of
(33:21):
the best stories in college football. Might not be much
left to talk about. We'll explain that to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Welcome back, everybody. Fox Sports Radio er toords Jason Martin,
broadcasting live from the tire rack dot Com studios. Jmart
if we can, I think it's time that we take
a quick moment of silence. The Colorado Buffaloes. I think
(33:55):
it's safe to say, yes, Mary, thank you. I'm getting emotional,
get a little emotional. I don't think they're really a
topic anymore.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
J Martin. Probably not unless unless we do, unless we
have some off the field comments and stuff. I don't
know that there's much to say now.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
They lost twenty eight ten to Nebraska.
Speaker 3 (34:18):
Wasn't that close.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
It wasn't that close. They had sixteen yards rushing on
twenty two attempts. That's point seven yards per carry. Here's
the crazy part. By the way, Nebraska twelve penalties for
one hundred and five yards. I just I was one
of those guys in the off season. I tried to
(34:40):
sell myself, you know, the portal this, they've added that
guy here, dah da da da da this and that
struggle with North Dakota State. Try to tell usself, well,
you know, O line wasn't good, defense wasn't good. But
oh no, they'll figure they'll be okay. No, I just
it's just I think it's done. You know, they play.
(35:02):
They played Colorado State next week, and then they opened
Big twelve play in a few weeks against Baylor. I
think they got to go on like a minimum three
game winning streak before I even think about caring about
them again. And based on what I've seen the first
two weeks, I just don't think that's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
To Shador Sanders got sacked six times by six different
Nebraska players.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Oh wow.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
When I looked at that stat, like I was going
through just the box score, I was like, let's see
how many times he got sacked because I knowe it
was like four in the first half. It was sick.
But it was won by six different players, so they
sent guys from everywhere and got him. He ends up
with negative thirty yards on the ground as a result
of that. So two, here's here's why what you said
is right. One, Okay, they're not very good. Still, they
(35:47):
may be better than they were last year, and they
may still not be very good. Shadoor Sanders Heisman campaign
is over. We don't need to worry about that, So
that's not gonna be a talking point. And really Travis
Hunters is too, even though he had one hundred yards
and all that. Like, they're not going to be relevant
enough for the Heisman to be talked about. Like Nebraska
does seem to be a little better, and you kind
(36:08):
of expected it. Matt Ruhle hasn't go out and had
to coach college football. Wasn't a great stop in the NFL,
but many have done that and then going back to
college and shown that they were meant to be college coaches.
They won at home, they look good doing so. Like
we said, it wasn't as close as the final score indicates.
But Colorado just doesn't look good. They still don't look
(36:29):
like they fixed it. They put ten new starters on
both or ten new players on both their offense and
defensive line in the offseason, and you really couldn't tell it.
And that's Nebraska's not going to be one of the
better teams that they that they'll see. They've still got
some hard stuff coming. And now I think you look
at it, and you look at the rest of that
(36:49):
schedule and you say, all right, well, Kansas State, Arizona, Utah,
Kansas City lost, Oklahoma State, who came back and won
in that double overtime thriller against Arkansas today. But I
look at all those games, I'm just like, I don't
know how you win those games. I'm not sure how
they may not duplicate the record they had last year.
They definitely I do think this is the epitaph, though
(37:12):
I don't think Colorado is going to be a focus
of tourism Martin going forward outside of the wrong kind
of news or just some crazy play that Sanders or
Hunter made. But in terms of their relevance, they're They're done.
There's no there's no point in continuing this. It's not
(37:34):
interesting anymore.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
It isn't And yeah, I mean I still will pseudo
defend them because listen, Or threw a pick six on
the goal line under pressure. The defense wasn't terrible, but
the O line just listen, I'm not a coach. I
always feel like, well, you know, it's like, but you know,
(37:57):
whatever it takes to fix an OH line, it did
not happen. And this was something that you know, I
felt like, you know, I thought the defense wasn't as
bad as people said it was in Week one, but
I thought the O line was every bit as bad,
and it was just crazy. Shoudor really had no time
in the pocket. You know, you know, the rushing yards
(38:21):
or are skewed a little bit because in college sacks
the negative the negative, the negative yards from sacks count
as count as negative rushing yards. But I mean, you know,
their leading rusher had thirty two yards on five carries.
So it's just like, I don't know, I don't know.
It was just I'll say, like I'm a little bummed.
You know, I bought into the fever. I got a
(38:41):
little excited last year. I was, and by the way,
it was so fun. I know, there was a lot
of you know, noise in this and that it was fun.
Speaker 3 (38:50):
We loved it like that. It would it's better for
college football for them to be good and relevant because
there's so much there's so much like pizazz around it
and flash. But if they're not good, there's no storyline
there outside of the wrong kind of storyline that none
of us want to waste our time with.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Yeah, and that's exactly what it is, is that you know,
I think that you know, and even coming into the year,
it was like you could kind of justify it, well,
it was year one and it was this and it
was that. But it is now year two. They don't
look fundamentally better on the They look kind of worse
on the offensive line. If that's possible.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
That can't be possible.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
It was so bad and as you mentioned, Jmart, schedule
does not get easier. Even if some of those big ten,
Big twelve teams excuse me, maybe are not as good
as we thought. You know, you still got Kansas State,
you got at Arizona, you got Utah who was awesome today.
He had Oklahoma State as well to end the year.
So Colorado loses, They fall to one in one. Get
(39:50):
you some quick score updates here before we get to
the top of our get to the start of our two.
Excuse me, Oregon, this is a stunner. They are down
to Boise twenty to fourteen at the half. We'll keep
you updated on that one. Arizona, which we just mentioned
ranked in the top twenty five, has a thirteen to
ten lead on Northern Arizona USC. We got Jamar at
(40:13):
some point. We gotta talk about that USC game from
last Sunday. They take care. They're up ten tohing on
the goal line to start the second quarter. So that's
your college football update. But I'll tell you what, Jmark,
we got two NFL games to react to. Well, come
back case Baltimore, Philly, Green Bay. That's next. Fox Sports Trio.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Welcome back, everybody, Fox Sports Radio. Aertorris, Jason Martin. We
are broadcasting live from the tyrack dot Com studios ti
iraq dot com. We'll help you get there an unmatched selection,
fast free shipping, free road hazard protection, and over ten
thousand recommended installers. Tirac dot com the way tire buying
(40:55):
should be. We are taking it till two a m.
Eastern time. We just did an hour of college football coverage.
As the SEGA just told you, USC up now seventeen
to nothing at the LA Coliseum, Oregon trailing Boise at
the half, twenty to fourteen. We will keep you updated
on those scores. But ja Mart, it's not just college
(41:18):
football that's back, baby. Two NFL games are in the books.
We gotta start with the big one on Thursday night.
It was something. It was something, so as the first
of all great game. We all know what was at stake,
rematch of the AFC Championship game casey last year wins
(41:40):
in Baltimore. Weird year, but you know they figured it
out in the postseason, go on win the Super Bowl.
We all know the story. Well you could tell just
how much this one meant to Baltimore. And for a
second there, you know, that final few seconds, it looks
like maybe, just maybe Baltimore was going to potentially come back,
(42:02):
tie the game, potentially take the lead. We saw John
Harbar ready to go for two after what we thought
was in Isaiah likely completion in the end zone to
cut the score to twenty seven to twenty six. Of course,
by now everybody knows, you don't need me to tell
you Isaiah Likely's foot was out of bounds. Kansas City
Wins twenty seven twenty a thriller in KC. J. Mart
(42:27):
I got so many takeaways from the opening night of
NFL football on Thursday evening. What was your number one takeaway?
Speaker 3 (42:36):
That the Chiefs are the best team in the league. Again,
we haven't even seen everybody else hit, and the Chiefs
looked better than they did last year. They've got Xavier Worthy,
who is basically Tyreek Hill two point zero, but a
more season receiver at that point in his career. Like
this early Tyreek Hill had he tried to catch with
his fists for a while and now he's certainly gotten
(42:58):
a lot better from there. But Worthy he's a much
better pass catcher at this stage, in addition to how
fast he is. Andy Reid still just dialing up incredible offense.
They've got Matt and n Aggie back and he's helping
you out and Mahomes is. Look, we're gonna listen to
Brady for the first time on commentary on Fox tomorrow,
(43:20):
and he may still be the greatest football player we
ever see in fifteen years. Right, he might still be
the greatest quarterback ever, but Mahomes is slowly but surely
inching closer and closer and closer, because he's just it's
just different watching him operate. And you looked at that game,
and I think the biggest takeaway was as good as
Baltimore is and the moves that they made in the offseason,
(43:43):
they are not Kansas City. They are still looking up
at the Kansas City Chiefs. That's the biggest takeaway from
the game as a whole. Now I have individual takeaways,
but I'll let you go from there. But I definitely
certainly want to talk about the Baltimore side more deeply.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
I want to talk about Baltimore too, but let's stick
with the k C side for right now. That's just
got to be so concerning if you're if you're literally
one of the any other thirty one teams in the NFL. Yes,
because one, I don't think Case by any stretch played
a perfect game, but I also didn't think that it
(44:21):
was as close as the final score indicated. It was funny,
you know, we talked, We opened the show talking about
Texas Michigan. Michigan wins that game whatever it was, thirty
one to twelve, But that game did not feel close.
And I'll be honest, like this one. To me, I
never felt like Case was not gonna win that game
(44:42):
until Isaiah Likely's foot came down in bounds and you
were like, you saw John Harbaugh pointing to go for two,
ready to go for two, and it obviously didn't happen.
And when I look at at you know, Case, it
just goes back to you. And I were lucky enough
we were on after Chris Plank and Arnie Spaniard on
Super Bowl Sunday, and we were on within minutes of
(45:03):
the game winning play that allowed Kansas City to win
its second straight Super Bowl. And I remember us just
talking about at the time of like, if nobody caught
Kansas City last year, what hope do you have going forward?
Because you looked at last year, they didn't have a
deep threat that goes without saying like, you know, it's
(45:23):
not you know, you don't need to be Chris collins
Worth or Tom Brady or whoever to figure that out.
They had no deep threat. You know. The defense was
really what carried them for big chunks of the season,
especially late in the year when they kind of slowly
figured it out. They had to go to Baltimore and
to Buffalo. San Francisco had him on the ropes and
(45:44):
they still won the Super Bowl. That's not breaking news.
But you know, I saw this stat Jaymartin, I sent
it to you. Somebody put it out there, and it
really kind of rung to me of what that window
looked like and how that window may have closed for
everybody else. And obviously teams have a chance. I'm not
saying that the seasons over anything like that, but the
(46:05):
late Xavior Worthy touchdown pass. I saw somebody tweet this out.
It was only I think the third play of thirty
plus yards since Tyreek Hill left three years ago. So
it's not as though Kansas City has been this explosive offense.
But now you add, quite literally the fastest player in
(46:26):
the history of the NFL, combine with the best quarterback
in the league, with the strongest arm that throws the
best deep ball, and I know, maybe it's not the strongest.
You know, probably Josh Allen's in that conversation, but it's
a short conversation, and so I just look back to
previous years and I just say, like, man, the window
was there for everybody else. They didn't take advantage and
(46:48):
now cases kind of weather that storm of the post
Patrick Mahomes massive contract. They figured it out. By the
way I did find the stat this is via someone
named Doug Clawson, a research for CBS Sports. The touchdown
pass late to Xavier Worthy, which made it twenty seven
to seventeen at the time, was Patrick mahomes third TD
(47:09):
pass traveling twenty plus air yards since Tyreek Hill was
traded third.
Speaker 3 (47:14):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (47:15):
Offense is opened up once again, is what Doug Clawson tweeted.
So the window was there. They didn't have a deep threat,
they had to piece things together, and now that it
appears they have another one with an elite defense, an
elite Patrick Mahomes, I think everybody else should be worried.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
I'm mean, I think that's sorry. I think that last
year was a year to get them, and we said
that last year as it happened like that, that was
the year you had to get them, because they were
trying to figure out a few things post Tyreek Hill,
and they didn't seem to have the level of skill talent,
and even Travis Kelcey didn't quite look Travis Kelcey like
for a large part of that season, and the defense
(47:55):
was a little sketchy, but Spagnola is a great scheme coach,
and we saw that on Thursday. They don't always have
the most talent defensively, but they are an opportunistic defense,
and Spagnolo really understands his unit and he tries to
put them in positions to succeed, and they are a
big play defense. And so you see that. But I mean,
(48:16):
I think that you say that you didn't take advantage
of the windows. Cincinnati came to closest because they beat
him and got to the Super Bowl, and they came
awfully close to winning that super Bowl against the Rams.
They don't end up doing it. But I know the
three pat is the you know, it's the white whale.
It's the thing that doesn't happen. The reason why I
picked the Chiefs is because that's the most likely thing
to happen. I understand it's never happened before. But I'm
(48:38):
looking at this team and I'm looking at him on
Thursday night, and I'm saying, this is week one where
you're supposed to look rusty, and they still do, but
they beat You know, I think most people probably look
at Baltimore and say that's probably the biggest competition in
the conference to them. There are a few other teams,
certainly that we can make arguments for. But I watched
again a Raven's team that failed to protect its quarterback
(49:05):
and a Lamar Jackson that, for all the good that
he did in the game, and he did some outstanding stuff,
the reason that they were close and had a chance
to win the game was because of Lamar, because of
how great he is. And the reason they lost the
game was because of Lamar because he missed likely in
the back corner of the end zone, and then the
(49:27):
next play he totally goofed. He just could not find
his receiver who's wide open. He throws behind him and
then you know, we see what happens on third down
with the tow And I even look at the way
Baltimore reacted to the loss, with what Lamar said, with
(49:48):
what Ronnie Stanley said, and Stanley may have a point,
like the game was called very weird. It looked as
if Kansas City could have been called for the same
thing Stanley was called for and it didn't end up happening.
But I hope that they get that figured out. I
know they're trying to put an emphasis on these uh
before before the snap formations and all this stuff. I
don't want that to become a thing all season long.
(50:09):
But at the same time, it's like they were excuse making.
It's like, guys, you lost, and then the whole like
Lamar is saying, I still think it was a touchdown,
and then you had a couple of other Ravens that
said they shouldn't have overturned it. There wasn't enough evidence.
What are you talking about, Like, it was very clear
from multiple angles. That's why the joke was made afterwards
(50:32):
that he needs to start wearing white shoes, like you
need to start wearing white cleats, because that makes it
a lot harder to see that. Him wearing different colored
cleats made it clearly obvious as Toe was over the line.
So like Baltimore's reaction was like that indicated to me
that they were trying. They were grasping its straws because
(50:53):
they clearly were not the better team.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
A couple thoughts on the Baltimore side of things. First
of all, listen, I know it's only week one. First
of all, let me even just backtrack Todd Munkin, who
I have given listen no, because I you know all
off season everybody, you know, people in our business, like
you know, you just latch onto the easiest narrative. Oh,
Lamar stinks in the postseason and blah blah. And it's
(51:17):
like he didn't get any help from Todd munkin last year,
who was adamant to prove it felt like that he
had a quarterback, a pocket quarterback as good as Patrick
Mahomes Well Thursday night was the exact opposite Lamar. Jackson
ware the ball sixteen times now it made Lee one
hundred and twenty two yards, but like, what are like?
(51:39):
That was my biggest takeaway. It was really two things
from the Baltimore perspective. The first one, that game clearly
meant so much to them, and it was so clear
that they felt like they had something to prove, not
only to us but to themselves about how they match
up with Casey. It felt like this felt like, you know,
(52:01):
an AFC championship game from the perspective of they threw
everything that they had at Kansas City and it just
felt like it really mattered to them. But Lamar, I
don't know, this isn't a Lamar thing. I'm not blaming him,
ran the ball sixteen times, Jason, that's your quarterback, that's
your franchise. That's the guy you're paying a hundred plus
(52:24):
million two And like the thing is, and you know, listen,
we talk so much about a guy like Joe Burrow,
Well he hasn't stayed healthy. Well what about to you know?
Last year was the year, but what about blah blah
blah blah blah. And it's like the previous two years
Lamar Jackson did not finish the season because he was
not healthy. And it's like before last year. Obviously, last
year he won the MVP.
Speaker 3 (52:44):
I get that.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
But the point I'm trying to make is like I
understand you wanting to make a statement and win Week
one and you know, avenge all the ghosts from last year,
but you're gonna get the guy killed out there. And
it's like, that can't be the game. You can't have
spent not nine months thinking about the game and the
game plan was, Hey, let's run Lamar a lot. I'm
just sorry. There has to be a better explanation than that.
Speaker 3 (53:08):
Yeah, And at the same time, you also acquired Derrick Henry,
so run the ball with him. And I know that
they tried, and that brings up the other issue, which
is the old line is a problem for the team
right now. Like they could not handle up front, they
couldn't handle Chris Jones at all, but they couldn't handle anything.
And yes, Kansas City is a solid unit and Jones
(53:30):
is an absolute beast, a Hall of Famer and waiting.
But at the same time, like you have one guy
you've got to protect, and you have one guy, you
need to create enough space force so that he can
get going. Because if you can give Derick Henry enough
time to get three steps, he can run over just
about anybody because he's very, very opportunistic in terms of
(53:51):
he will pick the weiklink on a defense and run
them over. Like he doesn't necessarily go after the strongest guy.
He will from time to time, but he's very crafty.
He knows exactly what he's doing. But Derrick Henry, I
don't care how tough you are, how strong you are.
If you're getting hit a yard and a half behind
the line of scrimmage every play, you're not gonna get anywhere.
(54:12):
And the reason why Lamark should be able to run
and have more space to run because they're having success
with a more ground based game when you're looking at
a Derrick Henry and it should be able to create
space for your receivers as well down the field Bateman
and those guys, and none of that was the case.
I didn't like the scheme to your point. I certainly
didn't like how often they had Lamar out there running
(54:35):
the ball, and the protection wasn't there either, Like the
cumulative effect of utilizing Lamar in that way that often
and putting him at risk. Eventually he's gonna get got.
And if he gets got, your season's over and we
can move on from here. And that's not what anybody
is looking for. And certainly Baltimore fans don't want to
(54:57):
hear it. But look, I was on Greg Roman and
said he should have been gone two years before he
was gone. But Monkan brother, and you've done some good
things in your career, but you got to be better
than this. Like that right there was that was abysmal.
I mean that that was a failure in many many
ways because the one guy that is your franchise you
(55:18):
put in harm's way way too often in Week one
and lost.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
I was gonna say, I'll tell you what, Jamart, I
do have one other Baltimore Casey related question. And we
also also, of course have to go ahead and get
to the game that was in Brazil on Friday night.
Speaker 3 (55:34):
Oh we forgot, by the way, we forgot the biggest takeaway,
which is really looks like the new offensive coordinator in
Kansas City is doing work, I mean Taylor Swift, Oh yeah,
drawing up plays. Do we believe that that was just
Patrick Mahomes trying to tell a joke and then people
wrote articles suggesting it was true.
Speaker 2 (55:53):
I'll tell you what, Jase, we come back. We could
discuss that next because there's still a lot more to
peel back from Thursday and Friday in the NFL. Speaking
to the NFL football fans, be sure to tune into
Fox Sports Radio every Sunday morning, beginning at ten am
Eastern seven Pacific for Countdown to Kickoff, presented by BEDMGM,
Brian No, Jeff Schwartz, and professional better Bill Krakenberg. We'll
(56:13):
have you covered three hours before kickoff. Every Sunday morning,
listen to Countdown to Kickoff, presented by BEDMGM right here
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. We will
come back. We will talk about play caller Taylor Swift,
and I do actually have one more question from the
Baltimore perspective. Talk about that, talk about what we saw
Friday night in Brazil. That's all next. Fox Sports Radio.
(56:37):
Welcome back everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Eric Toros, Jasonmartin broadcasting
live fromthtierrack dot Com studios. In just a moment, Steve
de Sager will get you caught up on all of
the late college football really quick. J mart I just
want to ask you one more question about the uh
about the Ravens Chiefs game from Thursday night. By the way,
(57:00):
am I allowed to say? I think Patrick Mahomes was
probably joking now, Travis Kelsey said on Rich Eyesing, No, no, no, no,
she's been doing it, drawing up plays on little napkins.
I don't know if you know what what you know right?
But but yeah, I think I don't know if that's
that's a true story.
Speaker 3 (57:18):
I don't know. I mean, it's a fun story either way,
it doesn't really matter. I remember I think it was.
I think it was a Tights game few years ago
where they had fans draw up plays that they actually ran,
like during the preseason for like a series or something
like that. For charity. I think it was something like that,
and it was. It's a fun little story. I mean,
whether it's true or not, it's a it's a good
little tidbit. At the same time, I think some outlets
(57:42):
just ran with it as opposed to you know, like
Dan Patrick came flat out and said that wasn't true.
Basically just that was his opinion. Certainly, I think I'm
kind of on your side. I just kind of feel
like it probably was a joke. It's not like anything major.
I'm glad if it's true that, you know, she's into football,
(58:03):
likes it, and she's trying to support him and get
into it, and maybe she has been able to. It's
probably easy to as a Chiefs fan, you know, winning culture.
You know, when you guys are two and fifteen, let's
see how much he loves football then. But I don't
know that that's ever gonna happen. Aos all as Kelsey's playing,
so she's all right.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
Real quick for back to the Baltimore thing for a second. Yeah,
do you think that they put too much into that game,
because it just felt like, like you said, they go
to the podium, they're making excuses, you know, John Harbaugh immediately,
you know, signing for two, you know, after they scored
what we thought was the potential, you know, by the.
Speaker 3 (58:41):
Way I would have too, I think that was the
right decision.
Speaker 2 (58:44):
I just feel like there's seventeen of these things. I
get that the Chiefs are currently atop the throne. I
get that you're playing. I have no problem with them
playing to win. I almost feel like there was a
little bit too much, like they had like a little
too much to prove in that. I don't know if
I'm explaining myself well, but it just felt like it's
one game. You can't get too high, you can't get
(59:05):
too low. You have to put what happened last January
in Baltimore in the rearview mirror. It's a new season.
I don't know. I just felt like almost like they,
you know, like trying too hard, Like I don't know,
just something rubbed me the wrong way about well.
Speaker 3 (59:19):
I would say it this way. It wasn't that they
were trying to prove to Kansas City or anybody else anything.
I think the problem here was I think they were
trying to trying to prove to themselves hip and they
in the process revealed that they're not so sure because
of how hard they went. It was like they were
(59:40):
trying to prove to themselves, I told you we were
better than they were, like that all the critique in
the offseason wasn't accurate. But they just had a bad day,
but that they were better than the Chiefs and they
knew it, and that probably had to be a tough
pill to swallow for them. And based on the way
they reacted to the loss, they were trying to grasp
it anything they could to explain it away. Again, I
(01:00:03):
don't think to us, but to themselves, because you lose
again to that same team that you probably as soon
as you found out you were playing in Week one,
you were you know that was bullseye right there on
your schedule. You couldn't wait, not because it was the
first game, because you finally got a shot to put
(01:00:23):
them in their place and prove to yourself that yes,
you were better than them. And then you lose to
them again, then you got to recalibrate. Like Baltimore Ravens
are still an extremely good football team, But if you
put all your eggs into that basket and then it
turns out you still don't end up winning the game.
I actually think that sets you back a whole lot
(01:00:45):
further than if you had just gone into it as
if it was one of seventeen, because the one that matters.
I don't care if you beat them in week one, John,
I care that you beat him in January. It didn't
matter if you beat them in the regular season. If
you end up seeing them again and you lose to them,
then I'm not gonna care that you beat them about
thirty or forty even in week one. So I think
(01:01:05):
maybe maybe you psyched yourself out by getting too hyped
up for a week one game in a eighteen week season.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
There's an old saying, a scared dog barks the loudest. Yeah,
And that's just what I feel like with the Baltimore Ravens,
is that all the talk comes from a place of
insecurity about where they fit in with this opponent. And
by the way, Baltimore is still awesome, Da da da,
But I do think that right now Casey just has
(01:01:36):
them shook. By the way, they're not the first team,
they won't be the last. But I thought all of
their behavior from on the field, off the field, postgame,
thought it was all kind of a strange look Fox
Sports Radio ra toords Jason Martin broadcasting live from the
Tyreck dot Com studios. We'll come back. We'll talk about
the Friday night game in Brazil and the of course,
(01:01:56):
the ramifications that came with it. That's all next. Before
we do THEO, let's talk throw over the news desk
to Sega. What is trending?
Speaker 7 (01:02:02):
Updating the injury from last night. Packers quarterback Jordan Love
could miss three to six weeks where the sprained mcl
Love was injured in the final seconds last night. A
defensive tackle had firm hold of the quarterback's left leg.
Love'sne was hit from the side with the leg planted.
A reminder, the first Fox TV game with Tom Brady
in the booth is Sunday, Dallas at Cleveland. Number two
(01:02:23):
seed Arena Sablenka won the US Open. WNBA rookie Angel
Reefs of Chicago is out for the year with a
wrist injury. As for college football in progress, it is
at number seven Oregon a tie late in the third
quarter Ducks and Boise State Broncos even at twenty now.
Oregon's quarterback Dylan Gabriel has three touchdowns, two passing one rushing,
(01:02:45):
but they've missed an extra point, so the game is
tied late in the third. We mentioned two things last
week on the show about Boise State. One, they have
a running back who could be a first rounder to
the NFL, Ashton genty tonight seventeen carries eighty eight eight
yards and a touchdown at Oregon. The other thing we
mentioned is Boise State has a chance for the college
(01:03:05):
football Playoff this year if they can pull off the
upset at Oregon tonight. If there's a chance that Boise
State come late October, would be six to oh going
into the game at UNLV, which by the way, will
be a Friday night game in progress. At number twenty Arizona,
it's the Wildcats thirteen ten over Northern Arizona. They're early
(01:03:27):
in the fourth quarter there, and late first half at
USC it's the Trojans, ranked thirteenth in the country, leading
seventeen to nothing against Utah State Miller Moss with one
hundred and sixty four yards passing in the first half.
Probably pretty good that this was at an eleven PM
Eastern start time, Giving the one hundred plus temperatures that
(01:03:48):
La has been experienced and will for the next couple
of days as well, so I.
Speaker 3 (01:03:52):
Looked it up.
Speaker 7 (01:03:52):
It's just under eighty degrees at kickoff at USC tonight.
Southern Utah has taken an overtime lead at UTAP, also
in progress. It's early third quarter on Fox TV at
Washington State. Cougar's twenty seven to ten leaders against Texas Tech.
It's early third quarter at New Mexico State and the
Aggie still lead Liberty seventeen to nine. Oregon State in
(01:04:14):
the third quarter leads at San Diego State seven nothing,
and halftime at Arizona State Sun Devils over Mississippi State
twenty seven to three. Cal won at Auburn today twenty
one fourteen. The Cal Golden Bears. That's an acc team,
by the way, with a win at Auburn today to
go to two and zero after the opening win against
(01:04:36):
UC Davis. Stanford led Cal Poly at the half fourteen
to seven. Forty one seven Stanford the final and Virginia
with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, won at Wake
Forest thirty one thirty. Nebraska defeated Colorado twenty eight ten Tonight.
It was twenty eight nothing at the half, number twenty
five Clemson sixty six twenty over Appalachian State, number twenty
(01:04:57):
two Louisville forty nine fourteen winners against j Jacksonville State,
and Syracuse Today got four touchdown passes from Kyle McCord
and beat number twenty three Georgia Tech thirty one twenty eight.
Syracuse led thirty one to fourteen with about five minutes left.
Easy wins in the top ten for Georgia, Ole, miss
and Missouri Ohio State as well. Alabama pulled away for
(01:05:20):
a win against South Florida forty two to sixteen. Texas
dominated at Michigan thirty one to twelve. Northern Illinois won
at number five Notre Dame sixteen to fourteen on a
field goal with about thirty seconds left. In Major League Baseball,
the game on Fox TV for much of the country
was from Kansas City. The Royals scored four runs in
the bottom of the eighth to beat Minnesota four to two,
(01:05:41):
and then Cleveland lost tonight at Dodger Stadium seven to two,
so the Guardians first in the AL Central, just three
and a half games over the Royals, now still five
up on the Twins only three weeks left in the
regular season. Milwaukee and San Francisco with wins. Saint Louis
beats Seattle two nothing, Houston over Arizona to eleven to five.
So Houston the first place team in the AL West,
(01:06:03):
five and a half games out of the Mariners.
Speaker 2 (01:06:05):
Back to you, thank you very much, Steve de Sager.
Saga will be back in just one moment with his
extended update, getting you caught up on everything we missed.
Uh throughout the day, Fox Sports radio er towards Jasonmart
broadcasting live from the tirerack dot Com studios. Jmart, really quick,
let's hit on the other uh, you know, first time
ever as at least as far as I know, two
(01:06:27):
opening weekend games on Thursday and Friday. Last night obviously,
well it's you know, since I guess it's Sunday on
the East Coast, but you get the point. Friday night
in Brazil, Philadelphia wins thirty four to twenty nine. Of course,
the story was Jordan Love carted off the field as
the SEGA just told you mcl injury. I expected to
(01:06:47):
be back hopefully in three to four weeks. You take
it wherever you want, JAMRT. But what I think, I
know what the most significant takeaway is for you, but
the floor is yours, my man.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
Well, I mean I thought that Kellen Moore made a
day difference for the Eagles, but a bigger difference was
made by Sakuon Barkley. I mean, Barkley looked the part.
They created space for him. I mean, you look at it.
AJ had one hundred and nineteen yards and a touchdown.
DeVante had eighty four yards. They had five, six, seven,
eight guys out there that did something at least had
(01:07:18):
a target in the game. But they had six guys
that actually caught passes twelve between AJ and Deavante. But
Barkley helped them control the clock a little bit. Hurtz
looked a little more under control. It wasn't a great
game for him. He still threw two interceptions in the game.
But let's look at it from green based perspective. My
super Bowl that we picked it last week, My Super
(01:07:40):
Bowl was Kansas City over Green Bay. The biggest problem
here in a close game that was a lot of
fun to watch, like it was a great game. Both
these games Thursday and Friday were easy to watch and
just I'm so geeked for the NFL this year. The
biggest issue is you're in a tough division in the
NFC North, and you lost that game. It wasn't that
(01:08:04):
you lost Jordan Love for three to four weeks. He's
gonna be back and everything should be okay there. And
he still did a lot of good things in the game,
and he had a couple of couple of flubs, but
that's okay. But they lost this and now they're oh
to one, and then he's gonna miss three. Malik Willis,
I watched that in Tennessee. That's probably not gonna go
particularly well. They're they're not in a position not to
(01:08:28):
have him. He is their season. And you're looking at
the Lions, and you're even potentially looking at Chicago if
Caleb Williams comes out strong for them, and you're just
like Green Bay can't end up oh and four or
one in three and and who knows, maybe there's even
a setback from that. I don't think. So let's just
(01:08:48):
assume Jordan Love's gonna miss three games. It's manageable. It
is manageable even if you were to lose those three games.
If you were one and three, that's one thing. But
you're you're playing the Colts, the Titans, and the Vikings.
Maybe you went to of those games. Uh. But with
with Lake Willis, I have no idea if that is
what you're actually going to be running out there. But
the fact that you're ohen one and you already lost
to a team that you might actually be competing with
(01:09:10):
for home field when it comes to a championship game
or something like that. That's a pretty significant loss in
week one that you lose Jordan Love at the end
of a game that you could have still won but
you didn't. So you're oh and one and you lose
your quarterback. To me, that's the prime takeaway is that
Green Bay really finds themselves up against the eight ball.
(01:09:33):
My expectation would be that Love will be back on
October sixth against the Rams. That's just my prediction for
when we'll see him again.
Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Yeah, I think if there's any silver lining, if such
a thing exists with that injury, you know you are
looking at a scenario Indie next week. We'll see what. Uh,
Anthony Richardson is, I'm a little more of a seller
than a buyer right now. Tennessee, like and Jmart we'll
talk about this in hour three out because Tennessee's playing
Chicago tomorrow, and I want your feel for that game.
(01:10:04):
Feels like there's a little too much like Tennessee, like
reverse positivity. Like it was like all off season it
was all they're gonna stink, They're gonna stink, they're gonna stay.
Now it's like, oh, they might not be so bad.
I don't think they'd be very good. So the point
I'm trying to make next three games Indianapolis at Tennessee,
Minnesota at home. If you have any Division game all
year long, Minnesota at home is probably the one you
(01:10:25):
want with the backup quarterback. Not that I'm saying you're
gonna win if Molie Willis is the guy, I guess.
The point I'm trying to make is if it is
three games, that's about as manageable of a schedule as
you could ask for. They don't play either Detroit or
Chicago until the first week of November, so there's plenty
of time with the teams that we expect to be
atop the division. Not saying you ever want this injury,
(01:10:48):
but it feels like this is about the right time
to get it, by the way really quickly, because we
only got a minute or so here. Any thoughts on
just the idea of the game being in Brazil. I
understand the idea of building an audience, of expansion of
this and that, and I'm not saying the turf is
the reason that the injury happened, but it obviously wasn't
(01:11:10):
a great playing surface. You have an injury late and
it was Again I'm all for expansion and building a business,
but obviously with the safety issues the playing surface. I'm
not much in the business of criticizing Roger Goodell, but
this was one that felt like maybe wasn't the smartest decision.
Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
Yeah. I mean, look, we see that a lot of
times in championship games for some reason, the fields are slick,
and we see that national title games at Super Bowls
in years past. It's not a stadium that's built for football,
and football can be a little bit different than some
other sports. I don't know that I have any kind
of a strong take either way. I can understand trying
(01:11:50):
to expand to the South American audience and give them
a game and see and it was a really cool environment.
Everything about it look good. Did the NFL need to
do No, Uh, there's there's nothing that they needed to
do in Brazil. I'm not gonna like put that as
the cause for what happened to Jordan Love. But I
don't know, maybe maybe they got a little too cute
(01:12:12):
with that. I don't know that they needed to be
in Brazil. Yeah, just even though I really liked it,
I enjoyed watching it.
Speaker 2 (01:12:18):
Yeah, Yeah, it's it's one. You know, if he was
running untouched in the in the open field and hurt
his knee, you know, because of the field, you know,
I probably would feel a little bit stronger. But just
just kind of an interesting thought about you know, is
that a game. I again, I'm not in the business
of really criticizing Roger Goodell. All that guy does is
(01:12:40):
make money, hand over fist for that, for that, for
his owners. But you know, weird playing surface crime issues,
players not leaving the hotel, just do a great moment
for the NFL. Fox Sports Radio enter towards Jason Martin
broadcasting live from the Tireck dot Com studios, will come back,
the Seger will join us, and we know he's got
the goods everything you miss from across the world of sports.
(01:13:02):
That's next. Fox Sports Radio, Welcome back, everybody. Fox Sports
Radio Air Tords Jason Martin broadcasting live from thetiak dot
Com studios. As we do every week, let's toss it
over the news desk to saga what is trending late
this Saturday evening Sunday morning, depending on where you are.
Speaker 7 (01:13:21):
Before we get to the college football and the Notre
Dame loss. Today, you were talking about NFL. Did you
see the TV ratings for Thursday night's kickoff game Ravens
at Chiefs Nearly twenty nine million viewers. That is twenty
four million on regular TV plus almost five mili on streaming.
The amazing thing to me, Well, two things. One, they
had that storm that passed through pregame, so kickoff was delayed.
(01:13:44):
This is a game that didn't kick until eight forty
five Eastern and still got those kind of numbers for
an audience. And yes, the number one market for TV
ratings for Thursday night was Kansas City. In fact, it
got an eighty share, which means the s is eighty
percent of the televisions that were turned on were watching
(01:14:05):
the Chiefs games Thursday night in Kansas City. Wow, last
night was streaming only for most of the country. Keep
in mind the NFL rule if the local team is playing,
it has to be on a regular TV channel, So
if you were in the Green Bay area or Philadelphia,
you saw it on regular TV last night. The rest
of us streaming only. The total audience for last night
(01:14:27):
was about fourteen million, which is about double what Peacock
got for last year's regular season they late season game
they had with the slumping Chargers against the Bills at
the time. Now, Notre Dame lost at home to Northern
Illinois sixteen fourteen today on a last minute field goal,
And yeah, Michigan kind of lost at home as well.
(01:14:48):
It was Texas thirty one to twelve the final score.
So Notre Dame and Michigan each lose at home on
the same day for the first time since nineteen ninety four.
Speaker 2 (01:14:58):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (01:14:59):
And as associated to Press points out, when Brian Kelly
was Notre Dame football coach twelve seasons worth, when he
had a home game against an unranked, nonpower team like today,
his record was twenty and one. Coach Marcus Freeman three
and two in those situations at home. So far as
the Irish head coach.
Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
Well, yeah, I was gonna say everyone's making fun of
Brian Kelly. Oh he never This was after last week,
and oh back to Notre Dame never wins big games.
It's like to your point though, to Sega never lost
those really bad ones, which obviously, as you just said,
Marcus Freeman has made a little bit of a habit.
Speaker 7 (01:15:31):
Of Yeah, a couple of years ago, so I may recall,
you may ask, did Notre Dame pay the visitors for
Did they pay the visitors?
Speaker 3 (01:15:38):
They did?
Speaker 7 (01:15:39):
Yeah, About one point four million dollars is what Northern
Ilegant Point gets for the visit to South Bend, USA.
Today got a copy of the contract which is signed
five years ago, and the Irish are required to pay
out no later than sixty days after today. One point
four million dollars win lose, And in a couple weeks, Miami,
(01:16:02):
Ohio is going to visit Notre Dame and it's going
to get one in a quarter million. And the paper
points out that it's Miami Ohio that's the reigning Matt
Conference champion and they were picked to win that league
ahead of Northern Illinois this year. And yes, two years ago,
when Freeman's team lost to Marshall at home, they paid
(01:16:24):
Marshall one and a quarter million dollars for that game,
the Michigan lost thirty one to twelve to Texas. Michigan
was down at the half twenty four to three. Quinn
Ewers had three touchdown passes in that game. Michigan had
won twenty nine straight in the regular season. Oklahoma survived
Oklahoma State with a doublet win. We'll start with the
(01:16:45):
Oklahoma Sooners, ranked fifteenth. They scored no touchdowns against Houston
the last forty two minutes of the game tonight, Oklahoma
led fourteen to three in the second quarter sixteen to
twelve the final Houston Cougar's as a team thirty five
carries just fifty eight yards rushing, one fumble, one safety.
But Oklahoma does get the w sixteenth ranked Oklahoma State
(01:17:06):
in doubt beat Arkansas thirty nine thirty one. Arkansas had
kicked a forty five yard field goal to tie it
at the end of regulation, so Arkansas had nearly six
hundred and fifty yards of offense today, but on field
goal attempts it went one for three and it had
three turnovers, and it lost on the road. Even though
they held Alli Gordon under fifty yards rushing seventeen carries
(01:17:28):
just forty nine yards, he did have a late touchdown.
There was a game on FS one tonight at Illinois
where the Aliini, with ten points in the last ten minutes,
beat nineteenth rank Kansas twenty three to seventeen. It's not
Jaden Daniels at quarterback. Jalen Daniels is the Kansas quarterback.
He had two TD passes, but three interceptions and one
fumble as well. Packers quarterback Jordan Love could miss three
(01:17:52):
to six weeks with a sprained MCL, but Christian McCaffrey
says I'm playing on Monday. The forty nine Ers running
back was limited in practice again with his calf injury.
The Jets do not expect pass rusher Hassan Reddick to
play Monday night. He's been holding out since the trade
from Philadelphia. What will the receiving corps look like tomorrow
for the Bengals. Jamar Chase is questionable due to illness
(01:18:14):
now and he wants a new contract. Bengals wide receiver
T Higgins is doubtful with a hamstring injury. Steelers quarterback
Russell Wilson questionable for tomorrow with a calf injury, but
he did travel with the team, so we'll see. He
was limited in practice again yesterday. Titans wide receiver DeAndre
Hopkins is questionable with a knee injury. He'll reportedly play.
Hopkins said this week he tore an MCL just over
(01:18:38):
a month ago. Hmm, MCL injury. Jordan Love, of course,
that's not a tear grantit, but that sounds like minimum
three weeks for him. We shall see the Colts, well,
we'll see what kicker they have tomorrow. Matt Gay is
questionable with the sports hernia, so kicker Spencer Schrader was elevated.
The Chargers placed wide receiver DJ Shark on injury reserve
(01:18:58):
bad Hip Washington and signed quarterback Sam Hartman from the
practice squad as QB Marcus Mariota is on IR and
Mariota's old team. The Oregon Ducks are in action in
a late game tonight, and early fourth quarter, Boise State
has just tied it up twenty seven all at number
seven Oregon. The Ducks had taken the lead on a
(01:19:18):
punt return for a score. Oregon quarterback Dylan Gabriel with
two TD passes one touchdown run. He's twelve of thirteen
through the air for two hundred and five yards, but
it is a tie game. Early in the fourth quarter,
Arizona's picked up a safety and a touchdown in the
fourth quarter. Twenty thranked Arizona now up twenty two to
ten over Northern Arizona, about seven minutes left in that game.
Speaker 2 (01:19:43):
Thank you very much to Seger. This is Fox Sports
Radio Ara towards Jason Martin, taking me up till two
am Easter time. Jmart We'll come back to college football.
We might have to talk about these Oregon ducks. They stink.
USC doesn't stink. By the way, how about the packed
to Washington State rolling past Texas Tech and Oregon State
(01:20:04):
winning against San Diego State. Will come back one more
hour till two am Eastern. We're talking college football in
the NFL. Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:20:12):
Don't listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:20:15):

fast free shipping, free road hazard protection and over ten
(01:20:36):
thousand recommended installers. Ti iraq dot com the way tire
buying should be Jamart. We led the show. By the way,
we're taking you until two am Eastern Bernie Friday. The
Bernie Friddle Show will follow us. You know, we led
the show with Texas, Michigan, with Colorado, all that. Jmartin,
I think we got to stay in the present and
(01:20:57):
in the moment right now because we no, no, because in
all series we have an upset bruin in in Eugene,
as as Oregon, as de Sager just told you with
about you know whatever we're talking about here about what
Let's take a quick look here, ten minutes left in
this game. Boise is up thirty three to twenty seven
on the Oregon.
Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
Ducks, pending a review.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
Pending a review. By the way, it's on Peacock, so
I'm not watching live, pending a review. So the touchdown
is potentially okay, So it looks like a knee may
have been down on the goal line. Yeah, okay, So
even if it isn't, they're going to have an opportunity. Yes,
So let me ask you. You know, it's a it's
a theme of the first two weeks of college football,
(01:21:41):
three weeks if you include weeks here, and we talked
about it earlier with Michigan. You don't want to overreact,
but don't have a quarterback line didn't look very good.
You're worried Notre Dame maybe the opposite. It's an embarrassing loss.
You don't want to lose to Northern Illinois. But at
the same time, you know, long season and and oh,
by the way, don't forget that the schedule is very manageable.
(01:22:04):
Should mention by the way, the touchdown is good on
the field for Boise State. They make the extra point.
They are up thirty four to twenty seven with ten
minutes to go. Oregon last week struggled with Idaho. You
know again, I know we're on live during these games,
and it's hard to have amazing takeaways while these games
are going on in real time. But at the same time,
(01:22:27):
you know, what do you make of just a situation
where Oregon was a preseason top ten team. You know,
somebody on this show may have had him playing for
a championship, but they don't look very good.
Speaker 3 (01:22:38):
Right both out him number two in twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:22:42):
Yeah, and I'm big ten champion. We don't trust Ryan Day.
Dan Lannings never let us down. He doesn't have a
signature win yet, but he'll get there. I don't know, man,
there's something that's not quite right with these Oregon Ducks
early Jamar.
Speaker 3 (01:22:56):
I don't know if they just haven't realized the season
started or not. They weren't great last week and they
sort of escape and tonight we're gonna find out. If
they escape, they're they're trailing by seven. They fumbled the ball. Well,
I guess Boise has forced three fumbles and gotten them all.
If Oregon loses this thing, I mean, they're gonna be
able to look at their own mistakes, but Boise has
(01:23:17):
helped force them. You don't have I mean, you've got
this luxury if you're Oregon to still find your way
in and you know, you can deal with a blemish
and things of that nature. But I mean, they just
I think you're the way you described it is right,
it just doesn't look right like it does. I thought
Oregon was just gonna be flying high in the first
(01:23:39):
couple of weeks of the season. I was looking forward
to that matchup coming up in Eugene with Ohio State.
Look at it now, it's just like I mean, Ohio
State looks as advertised, if not even better, even though
we haven't seen them play anybody yet, but I mean,
they certainly looked apart from a talent standpoint, we already
knew what they had done with the roster and staff
and all those things. Oregon looks like they just look flat.
(01:24:04):
And You've got Don Gabriel and you know he can play,
but they're just I'm not saying they're Florida State and
I'm not even necessarily saying they're Michigan, but they need
to get off the mat, like they need to realize
that we're two weeks into this season and maybe they're
still gonna come out of here and they're gonna win
this game. We'll find out over the next ten to
fifteen in game time, but this doesn't give you a
(01:24:26):
ton of confidence that I really felt like they were
going to be in the driver's seat and they were
going to look depart from moment one, and as of yet,
they still look like an understudy to some of the
better teams in the country.
Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
And that's that's exactly where it is. Is this twelve
team playoff. It changes the calculus on everything. But I
also think you have to look at things that become
trends and you sit there and say, well, wait a second. Now,
if you know, if this continues the way this is,
(01:25:00):
then it's hard to imagine this team reaching the potential
that we expected in the preseason. And so you don't
want to overreact to Oregon. But it's like I said
earlier in the show, you know, like look at Florida State, right,
you know we came on after week zero, and you
don't want to overreact. It's week zero. Anything could happen.
But it's like, well, wait a second. Now, they couldn't
run the football, they couldn't stop the run. They're playing
(01:25:22):
Georgia Tech and this is Florida State I'm talking about now,
and it's like, Okay, maybe Georgia Tech's just way better
than we think, or maybe they can't stop the run,
and maybe that's something that is going to carry on
all day. By the way, it looks as though Oregon
has taken the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (01:25:40):
They've had a punt return for touchdown and a kick
return now for a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:25:45):
That is insane. So there are no flags on the field.
Oregon was trailing thirty four to twenty seven with about
ten minutes to go. Boise State just punches home a
touchdown score and or a takes back the ensuing kickoffense.
So we got about ten minutes left in this game,
Jay mart But I think that the conversation is still valid. One,
(01:26:08):
they have not looked like a top five, top ten team. Two,
the schedule is gonna get tougher. And three the problems
that they have had. You know, listen, they struggled to
run the ball last week. They're struggling to run the
ball this week. As you just said, two special teams touchdowns.
Right now, Oregon has eighty six yards rushing on twenty
(01:26:30):
nine carries. So that is not acceptable. So I ask
you one question about me. What do you got what
we don.
Speaker 3 (01:26:36):
Gabriel has one incompletion in the game. He's twelve of thirteen,
last ten minutes left in the football game. Last week
he only had a handful of age. So he threw
forty nine times last week, Okay, he had he's twelve
of thirteen. We're in the fourth quarter. Why is he
(01:26:56):
not throwing more than thirteen passes in this football game?
I don't understand you're talking about they struggled to run
the ball and all this. He has one incompletion, like
throw the ball a little bit more, maybe you don't
need to run the ball quite as much, and maybe
that'll open up the run for you. It seems like
he can throw it. I thought that's why you brought
him there. And I'm not really understanding why he would
(01:27:18):
have thirteen passes at this point in this game.
Speaker 2 (01:27:20):
Yeah, I guess the only thing I could say, and
I don't have a good answer for it, is it's
almost like the inverse of Colorado, which was basically like
they didn't even try to run the football from the opening,
you know, bell or whatever. And I think maybe Oregon
is trying to figure out the run game while trying
to win this game. But I agree with you. I
agree with you. You know, listen, we talk about the who, what, when, where?
Speaker 3 (01:27:41):
Why?
Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
You gotta win this football game. And again, it's a
twelve team playoff era. I get it. But as you said,
you got Ohio State on the schedule, you got to
go to Michigan, even if Michigan doesn't look great. That's
not a gimme. And you know you got some other
tough games on the schedule, so you got to win
this one. If you're Oregon, they have just tied the
game again with an interception or interception excuse me for
(01:28:02):
a kickoff return for a touchdown after Boise State had
taken a thirty four to twenty seven lead. We will
We're on till two am Eastern, so well, as long
as this game is on, we will keep you updated.
J Martin is worth noting another. It's still gonna take
some time to get used to this. Another new Big
Ten school is in action at the LA Coliseum right now,
(01:28:24):
and you and I work Saturdays. We have not had
a chance to discuss what happened last Sunday night in
Las Vegas. USC beats LSU twenty seven to twenty was
the final score there. In this game, the USC right
now is up twenty seven to nothing the start of
the third quarter at the LA Coliseum. Bring it up,
(01:28:44):
J mart You know I was a little higher on
USC than some. I thought the defense only had to
be incrementally better. I thought Lincoln Riley has never not
had a quarterback that worked out. I guess maybe Spencer Raut.
Who oh, by the way, all of a sudden looks
awesome again as a potential backup in the NFL. I
(01:29:05):
just bring it up because this USC team, first of all,
we have a talk, so I'll just give you the
floor impressions USC versus LSU last week in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (01:29:17):
I would say the defense you're talked about incrementally better
is what you needed to see. Like, they don't have
to become Michigan, but they have to be at least serviceable,
and they haven't been for the last couple of years. Well,
they were more than serviceable. They played physically. I thought
they tackled pretty well. And it's not like LSU had
no offense, but USC made it difficult for them throughout
(01:29:39):
the game. I mean, and Moss played like you would
expect Lincoln Rally's quarterbacks to play. That's what he's proven
is he can coach quarterbacks. You made that point, and
you're right. I mean, whoever's played quarterback for him has
had phenomenal seasons repeatedly. But they had the catch of
the year I think in college football, I don't think
we'll see anything better than that came from one of
(01:30:00):
their receivers. And you saw Caleb Williams on X commenting
on some of the stuff that these guys had were doing.
It's just like, yeah, we knew he was a freak
and stuff like that. Like I thought they looked good.
I was impressed with USC. I would advise Brian Kelly
to stop playing on these Sundays. I know, right, well, Gay,
can we maybe maybe let's put that one back into hopper? Well,
(01:30:24):
not not do that anymore?
Speaker 2 (01:30:25):
You know what's crazy? So I said that, and I
tweeted it on Sunday night. I said, so, LSU actually
as a program. People don't realize this. They've lost five
straight season openers J Martin the last yes. So they
lost this this week to USC. They lost the last
two to Florida State. Coach os. Last year I think
(01:30:48):
you and I were on they got run over by
UCLA at the Rose Bowl. That was when he kind
of knew the coach o thing wasn't gonna last. And
then the COVID season of twenty twenty they lost to
Mississippi State and unfortunately the late Mike Leach was was
the coach at the time. So five straight season opening losses,
three straight under Brian Kelly. So I said, can we
(01:31:08):
get you tip on the schedule?
Speaker 3 (01:31:11):
Can we? Right?
Speaker 2 (01:31:12):
Well, guess what somebody pointed this out to me. I
was not aware they open next next year, and now
I don't know if it's the Sunday night game they
open next year at Clemson.
Speaker 3 (01:31:22):
So.
Speaker 2 (01:31:24):
You know, whoever's doing Brian Kelly scheduling, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:31:27):
Can't stop like, yeah, I would you give him a
warm up or something. I mean, he's slamming the table,
he's furious, he'sai like, man, I can't believe we didn't
win that game. And in some ways I couldn't either,
because I thought that they were for a time like
that one was going back and forth. I wouldn't have
been surprised to see either team win it. But I
mean again, it just puts you behind to start the year.
(01:31:48):
LSU could be fine, and they certainly have a lot
to build on and things like that, but it just
it gives you a sour taste to start your season.
And I just don't know why they they find themselves
in these situations repeatedly. But I do think the storyline
was less LSU and more USC. Like USC just looked
a lot more complete. And that's something that I think
(01:32:10):
has been almost impossible to say throughout a lot of
Lincoln Riwley's coaching in college football is that they haven't
ever really looked complete. They've looked like they can outscore you.
But that team against LSU looked like a team that
could actually challenge you defensively. And if they're at least
middle of the road defensively, because of what we know
(01:32:32):
they can do offensively, that puts them in a pretty
advantageous position more often than not.
Speaker 2 (01:32:38):
I'll tell you what. It's one thirteen Eastern time here
on a Sunday morning. Who doesn't want to hear Brian
Kelly slam and a table Mary mac take it away, and
we're sitting here again.
Speaker 6 (01:32:49):
We're sitting here again talking about the same things about
not finishing when you have an opponent in a.
Speaker 2 (01:32:58):
Position right Kelly after the game, he was not happy
LSU today, by the way, did bounce back and get
a victory. LSU should be fine here for the next
few weeks. They play actually ironically they host. They actually
go to South Carolina next week, which was announced as
the college game Day game, then host. Ironically, you see
(01:33:19):
LA on the twenty first before playing South Alabama. But
I do think the story was usc By the way,
j Mart, we are in the middle of an extreme
heat wave here in LA. The lights have gone out
at the LA Coliseum right now, So I don't know
if this game is gonna start back up here at
some point, but the lights are out at LA Coliseum.
(01:33:41):
Looks like they got some sort of generator or something on.
The players are kind of just on the field, hanging out,
trying to stay warm. But yeah, I don't know if
that's going on at the Coliseum or how long it's
gonna last, but we do have a power outage at
La Colisseum. Fox Sports Radio Er Toards Jason Martin, broadcast
live from the Tyreck dot com studios. We'll come back,
(01:34:03):
We'll switch gears from college back to the NFL and
start looking ahead to the rest of the week. Once
late Kansas City got a victory, Philly got a victory,
who else is gonna get a victory? On Sunday and Monday.
We'll discuss all that next Fox Sports Radio Welcome back, everybody.
Fox Sports Radio, Aer Torres Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
(01:34:24):
the tirerack dot com studios. Keeping the updated on the
late games. The saga will have more details in just
a moment or Oregon punting the ball back to Boise.
Four point thirty three left in this game tie ballgame
in Eugene. The Ducks have not figured things out this season.
USC by the way, they are underway in the second half,
(01:34:45):
USC up twenty seven to nothing. Arizona did just close
out a victory against Northern Arizona. By the way, shout
out to the PAC two. Oregon State leads San Diego
State fourteen to nothing, and Washington in State is up
on Texas Tech. Tell you what, ja mart, Let's switch
back to the NFL. What we're gonna do. Bring in
(01:35:06):
producer Ian. Ian's just gonna give us a few games
to talk about, to chat about, and to preview. We
don't have to make official picks, but just talk about
some of these big games on air, and uh, just
some thoughts going into a busy week one. So Ian,
give us the first game that we're gonna chat about.
Speaker 8 (01:35:24):
All right, We'll start with the Jets versus forty nine Ers,
So Monday night football, working backwards, we are going to
start with that game. So the Niners are favored by
four points. What do you guys think, Jaymar, what do
you got?
Speaker 3 (01:35:38):
Buddy? First off, I hope we are not having a
horrible conversation about Aaron Rodgers after that game. It's a
really nice matchup for the first week of the season
because the Jets. There's a lot of love for the Jets,
kind of like one of those little trendy picks, and
maybe they could really do some damage this year. We'll
(01:35:58):
see the Niners. I'm an off you know, a great year,
but one that ended exactly the way that headed ended
the last time that they played in the Chiefs in
the Super Bowl. So you're coming into this game. You've
had a couple of weird offseason stories, the IU thing,
the Trent Williams staying. You got McCaffrey, who is gonna
try to go, but he may not be one hundred
percent in the game. It doesn't look good for San Francisco,
(01:36:24):
but for some reason, I still think they're gonna win.
Like I think he's gonna take some time with the Jets,
and some of the stuff you've heard Aaron Rodgers say
in the offseason about Sala hasn't been particularly edifying. So
I'm not sure I need to see a little bit
from the Jets before I can really buy in. I'm
I'm optimistic that that's gonna work, but I think that
(01:36:45):
I like San Francisco to come in there and win
the game.
Speaker 2 (01:36:48):
I'll say this, I feel like, outside of the Hassan
Redick thing, which is obviously weird, I don't think it's
been that noisy of an offseason for the Jets. I
mean it's been I don't want to say off season
is the wrong word. Since camp started, it's largely been okay.
And I look at San Francisco. Listen. I'm not an expert,
(01:37:09):
but you talk to the guys even in our building,
that have played in the league. I was talking to
Kerry Rhodes about this the other day. Is the you
know you missed training camp. Doesn't matter how good you are,
your body needs those hits and those blows, and you
know there's only so much you can do working out
at a gym in Houston or La or Vegas or whatever.
(01:37:29):
And so Trent Williams obviously was not part of training camp.
Brandon Ayuk was in and out. I think I like
the Jets in this game. Like I think I've told
you jam Martin, I'm a little bit higher on them
than a lot of people, just because I'm a little
bit lower on the Dolphins can to a stay healthy
for a second straight year, all that stuff, So give
(01:37:51):
me the Jets. I know when I'm making official picks,
but I think I do like the Jets. I think
I do like the Jets in this one, even though
they're on the road on Monday night. Great story in
this game, the Rams versus Lions. Obviously you have all
that backstory with the Stafford golf swap, and the Lions
are favored by four and a half points. So what
do you guys think, Torres?
Speaker 3 (01:38:13):
I mean, you got no Aaron Donald with the Rams,
and then they made the move where Ernest Jones went
to the Titans, but cup and Nakua and Stafford and
Stafford going to Detroit, and just it is gonna be
a great game. It's gonna be a great story. And
these are two teams that can look at themselves as contenders,
no question about that. In my mind, it's there should
(01:38:36):
be offense everywhere too. I know you have the lines
in your Super Bowl and I certainly came close to
getting there. I didn't quite get there, but I don't Honestly,
I don't really have a dog in a fight when
it comes to who I think is gonna win, just
because I think either team could win, and I think
they're relatively evenly matched. If it comes down to late
(01:38:56):
game decisions, I'll take the Rams just because I've seen
Dan Campbell outthink himself. I'm sorry, brother, I mean, he's
done it a few different times, and McVeigh is a
lot more even keeled in those moments. So if it
comes down to crunch time, I think I trust the
Rams a little bit more than the Lions.
Speaker 2 (01:39:16):
Yeah, it's funny. I feel like this game's flying under
the radar a little bit, which is kind of good. Yeah,
Like you know, obviously, look, you know, you have the
opener Thursday night, then you get the Friday night game,
which we've never had before. You got the Monday night
game with Aaron Rodgers returning to the field, and then
there's a couple other games, you know, the Dallas Cleveland game,
which we'll get to I'm sure here in a minute,
(01:39:37):
but I just bring it up because it just feels
like this is one I don't feel like a lot
of people were talking about. These two teams played in
the playoffs last year. I think both these teams it
feels like they feel good about their situations.
Speaker 3 (01:39:48):
Obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Yeah, the Rams, you know, obviously, coming off a playoff
appearance the Lions. You know, if they win that Dallas game,
they probably end up with the number one seed last year.
So I'm just more intrigued than anything, you know. I
don't know there's something funny that tells me that the
Rams may pull off a surprise in this one. But
just really excited to watch this game more than anything.
Speaker 8 (01:40:09):
All Right, Next up, we're gonna go to J Mart's
Denver Broncos. They're playing the Seattle Seahawks, and unfortunately Jmart,
the Seahawks are favored by six points.
Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
What do you guys think?
Speaker 3 (01:40:20):
I think it's just it's the fear of the unknown,
or certainly the question marks about the unknown. I'm a
little optimistic this year. I know that there's gonna be
some ups and downs, but I'm really excited to have
a quarterback that it just makes you want to watch. Yeah, definitely.
As a matter of fact, I just I love the
idea of bo Nicks and Sean Payton working together. I've
(01:40:43):
liked everything that I have heard from the Broncos beat
reporters and things like that throughout the offseason. I think
I think it's gonna be It'll still be an up
and down year and it's a tough division and we'll
see what that means in terms of the win loss record.
But I'm excited about it. I am, And I don't
think Seattle's that great. I just I don't. I don't know.
(01:41:04):
I'm I'm I'm gonna need to see it. They get
a brand new head coach, They've got some new things.
I I just a six point favorite. I think it
will be closer than that, even if even if my
guys don't win it out.
Speaker 2 (01:41:14):
Right, Yeah, Seattle's the like probably maybe the only team
that I feel like this about. Like I just don't
even know what to make of them at all. You know,
like in the preseason when we're doing our over under
win totals and you'd see Seattle on the schedule, you'd
be like, well, is that an easy game? Is that
a not easy game? Everybody likes Mike McDonald, but you know,
(01:41:35):
Gino's not really the guy long term. Ryan Grubb's never
been in the NFL. Just that, I don't know what
to think. So I have no super strong opinions on
this one. I'm intrigued to just watch it from the
Gina or not Gino from the Mike McDonald perspective. Who
is he? Is he as good as advertised now that
he is the head coach? And then counterintuitive, not counter intuitive,
just counter to that. Excuse me, you know, obviously curious
(01:41:58):
to see Bo Nicks in his debut. Tell you what
J Mack, J Mart, J Mart, J Mack is Jason Mcatyre.
I'm sorry, it's ten thirty Pacific time. We just had
a power outage at the LA Coliseum. I'm all over
the place. We'll come back, J Mart, and we will
discuss the rest of what should be a very fun
week one slate before we do though final time this
evening with us Steve de Seger, what is trending?
Speaker 7 (01:42:21):
You mentioned the warm weather and they did blame that
for the halftime power outage at the Colisseum. And it
was one hundred and fifteen degrees last couple of days
driving into our LA studios.
Speaker 2 (01:42:30):
But it's been hot at night too.
Speaker 7 (01:42:31):
Yeah, absolutely, I mentioned it finally went under eighty at
kickoff for the latest of late games at the Coliseum
tonight downtown. But USC is leading twenty seven to nothing
over Utah State in the third that's on Big ten Network.
They have enough light, that's focused on the field, not
in the stands certainly, but enough that's focused on the
field that they did not have a long delay before
(01:42:53):
starting the second half. So SC's driving already up big
and now it's six and a half minutes to go
in the third cours or they're going to have apparently
a first and goal coming out for SC. Meanwhile number
seven Oregon. Oh, one other note with the heat. You know,
they had almost fifty thousand fans at the Dodger game tonight.
They be in Cleveland, and the Dodgers have now tweeted
(01:43:14):
out if you're coming to the Sunday game in the heat,
they have tweeted out a coupon for free water. Wow
to anybody who's coming to the Sunday And that's what
five bucks there times fifty thousand people.
Speaker 2 (01:43:26):
That's I really stream with the game like I'm not
it doesn't matter to me, but it is. It's not
I mean, it's not safe, but whatever, who cares?
Speaker 7 (01:43:33):
So seven thranked Oregon is tied with Boise State with
a couple minutes to go thirty four thirty four, it's
under two minutes to go. Keep in mind the Ducks
missed an extra point kick in this game tonight. Now,
Oregon has scored touchdowns in the second half on a
punt return and a kickoff return, but the second of
those returns, the return man actually in celebration dropped the
(01:43:55):
football before arriving at the goal line. Too cool for school,
It turned out on replay review his teammate was the
first to pick it up in the end zone, so
Oregon was credited with a touchdown for that. In this
crazy game. Here minute and a half to go. It's
thirty four thirty four. The Ducks hosting Boise State and
their star running back Ashton Gente, who on twenty five
(01:44:18):
carries has one hundred and ninety two yards rushing and
three touchdowns at Oregon tonight. Also in progress on Fox TV,
Washington State at home leads thirty four to sixteen mid
fourth quarter against Texas Tech. Fresno State's lead is forty
six thirty now over Sacramento State under two minutes left
mid fourth quarter. At New Mexico State, Aggie's ahead of
(01:44:39):
Liberty twenty four to fifteen. Arizona State still leading Mississippi
State about ten minutes left, thirty to sixteen and about
two minutes to go. Oregon State with two fourth quarter touchdowns,
now leads at San Diego State twenty one to nothing.
Southern Utah won in overtime at UTEP twenty seven to
twenty four. Michigan State one today twenty seven to twenty
(01:45:01):
four at Maryland, Wisconsin eventually twenty seven to thirteen winners

four yard field goal late to win twenty to nineteen.
Each team punted nine times, just in keeping with tradition
of college football in that state. On FS one tonight, Illinois,
with ten points in the last ten minutes, beat nineteenth
rank Kansas twenty three seventeen. Oklahoma State in double overtime
beat Arkansas Oklahoma Sooners edged Houston sixteen to twelve. Kansas
(01:45:44):
State finally took the lead in the fourth at Tulane
on a fumble return for a score, and they won
thirty four to twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (01:45:51):
At Tulane.
Speaker 7 (01:45:52):
Tennessee dominated at North Carolina State fifty one to ten Tonight.
Penn State at home today, was trailing at the half
to Bowling Green, but Penn State won the game thirty
four to twenty seven. Easy wins in the top ten
for Georgia, Ohio State, for Ole, miss and Missouri. Number
three Texas won easily at Michigan thirty one to twelve.
Fourth ranked Alabama needed four touchdowns in the fourth quarter
(01:46:14):
to blow out South Florida forty two to sixteen the final,
and Northern Illinois kicked a last minute field goal to
win at number five Notre Dame sixteen to fourteen Arena Sablanca.
The two seed won the US Open, sweeping American Jessica Pagoula.
The men's final is Sunday, with from the US Taylor
Fritz against number one Rankyonnick Center. Nuggets guard Jamal Murray
reportedly agreed to a four year MAX extension worth over
(01:46:37):
two hundred million dollars. WNBA rookie Angel rees if Chicago
is out for the year with a wrist injury, Packers
quarterback Jordan Love could miss three to six weeks with
a sprained MCL the Mets won their ninth game in
a row, four nothing over the Reds, and the Braves
lost at home to Toronto. So the Mets now lead
the Braves by a game in the race for the
(01:46:57):
last NL wild cards. But He's won. Baltimore lost. Yankees
now a half game ahead of the Orioles for first
place in the Al East. Houston won, Seattle lost Kansas
City on Fox TV with four runs bottom of the eighth,
beat Minnesota four to two, and then Cleveland lost the
late game tonight, gave up six runs in the first.
In fact, Dodgers seven to two over Cleveland. San Francisco
(01:47:19):
won at San Diego six ' three. Oregon Ducks tied
in the final minute against the Boise State Broncos thirty
four thirty four. But Oregon is driving and in the
red zone.
Speaker 2 (01:47:30):
Back to you, thank you very much, Steve Sager to Sega,
have a great evening. You'll be back in tomorrow. Ok
all right with tomorrow night for Arnie. Yeah with the
all right? Yeah, Well they survive, survive in advance, as
did Chris playing. So Oklahoma sooners very true. You can
have a debate over who should be more concerned.
Speaker 7 (01:47:48):
I think each of these games will come up. Arizona
was losing to Northern Arizona late first half, but did
beat him twenty two to ten.
Speaker 2 (01:47:56):
Well, thank you very much to Sega. This is Fox
Sports Radio, Fox Sports Sunday Air towards Jason Martin broadcasting
live fromntaire raq dot com studios. Mary, give us a
little music.
Speaker 8 (01:48:08):
Ian.
Speaker 2 (01:48:09):
Let's preview a couple more games before we get out
of here. What do we have to discuss?
Speaker 8 (01:48:16):
Yes, sir, moving on Dallas Cowboys Cleveland Browns. Cleveland's favored
by two points and they are playing in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:48:23):
What do you guys think?
Speaker 2 (01:48:24):
Who do you think is not broadcasting this game? Has
that been discussed at all? I haven't.
Speaker 3 (01:48:28):
Yeah, I don't think it has been.
Speaker 2 (01:48:30):
No name yet Tom Brady his debut. By the way,
jmart what do you have any expectations for what you
think Tom Brady the broadcaster is going to be like
before we get through.
Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
I'm hoping he's great. I mean, I think that the
way that he can speak about football and the way
he processed information, the meticulous like detail oriented quarterback that
he was, should make what he has to say really enlightening.
I want to see like what his energy level is. Sure,
(01:49:03):
I think that's the that's the most intriesting thing is like,
because I heard him with the Fox guys during the
halftime of the Michigan Texas He's a little subdued, like
he what he said was fine, but I need a
little bit more energy than that. And maybe he's going
to do that. Maybe he was just you know, he
was just it was a different kind of setting and
all that. I'm I'm very optimistic because I know what
(01:49:24):
he could bring. I just want to see him be
really unbuttoned professional, but just I want to see him
be a fan maybe not quite Romo level, but just
kind of just very open and very more more the
Bucks Tom Brady than the Patriots in terms of just
kind of the fun level, because I want to see
(01:49:45):
energy in that booth because that's one thing Greg Olsen
always brought was like you could tell he loved what
he was doing.
Speaker 2 (01:49:51):
And I always thought Olsen was phenomenal and.
Speaker 3 (01:49:53):
I'm looking forward to to continueing to listen to him
for years and years to come. I want that out
of Brady. I don't want Brady to be too subdued,
and yeah, he'll grow into it and I'm sure he
might not be as energetic in week one as he'll
be in week ten, but I want to feel like
he's enjoying it.
Speaker 2 (01:50:09):
So you want end of roast tom Brady, not beginning
of roast, gotcha, Gutch?
Speaker 3 (01:50:13):
Well, I don't need him, like I don't need that,
but like a little more than I got today. Let's
just say that.
Speaker 2 (01:50:24):
Yeah, I'll be quick on this, then we'll talk about
the game. I just you know, obviously there's a lot
of talk about you know, because of his ownership stake.
You know, there are certain meetings that he can't be
in and whatever. You know, I every interview I hear
he's great because he has so much perspective. But at
some point it is gonna have to like not be Hey,
(01:50:45):
in two thousand and seven, Bill Belichick said this to us,
and this is how, you know, like at some point
it's got to be like what's going on in the field,
what's up with these current teams and players? But again,
tomorrow's the debut. You know, we will see what happen.
Speaker 3 (01:51:00):
I can get away with that for a while. I agree,
eventually that has to stop, but I think for a
while we'll be very interested to hear you know what
happened in his Patriots experience and how that informs what
we're learning on the field in the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:51:13):
Really quick, what do you got for on the field
on Sunday in this game? Team Mark?
Speaker 3 (01:51:16):
Gosh? I don't know. Again, with the Cowboys, I'm very
down on what I think they're gonna do this year.
That's a tough place to go and play. But I
don't know that Deshaun Watson is still very is still good,
and so I'm very kind of skeptical. With Nick Chubb
still on, you know, the not able to perform and
(01:51:37):
things like that, I could easily see Dallas coming in
there and beating them. It's it's gonna be Cleveland's defense
and wins that game, not their offense.
Speaker 2 (01:51:45):
Tell you what, Ian, one more? Give us one more
before we get out of here. One more?
Speaker 3 (01:51:50):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:51:52):
All right?
Speaker 8 (01:51:52):
Arizona at Buffalo. Buffalo's favored by six and a half points.
What do you guys think you know? I'll just be quick.
I'm a little down on Buffalo this year, I really am.
They lost a lot off the defense, obviously, know Stefan
Diggs this one, Like, I don't know, just you know
Kyler obviously was nearly not really a factor. Last year
they add Marvin Harrison. I could see the upset in
(01:52:15):
Week one with Arizona beating Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (01:52:19):
Maybe, but it is a West Coast team going East coast.
If it was in Arizona, I would feel I'd feel
better about the Cardinals chances. I think going to Buffalo
that feels like a game where Buffalo wins it by
a couple of touchdowns. You start to feel good about them,
and then you start seeing the flaws. I don't think
you'll see them tomorrow. I think I wrote today later today,
I think the Bills will win that game by double digits.
Speaker 2 (01:52:42):
Well, speaking of flaws, no flaws for the Oregon Ducks,
have they as they have just won on a walk
off field goal. Thirty seven to thirty four is the
final score. They survive Boise. You know, the Idaho double
dip to start the season jmar wasn't supposed to, you know,
be the tough part of the schedule. But last week
(01:53:05):
they survive Idaho and Oregon does hit a walk off
field goal. Thirty seven thirty four is the final come back.
Discuss a little bit more of the Week one NFL

the show. This is Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back everybody,
Fox Sports Radio, Eric Torris, Jason Martin broadcasting live from
(01:53:50):
the Tierack dot com studios. We are taking you up
till two am Eastern time. Bernie Fredo of the Bernie
Freddle Show will follow us. So much for Bernie to
get into cannot wait to hear everything he's got to
say about Week two of the College football Slate. By
the way, as we said right before halftime, right before
(01:54:13):
the break, excuse me, Oregon does survive a second straight
week against a team for Miidaho. Ironically enough, a walk
off field goal thirty seven to thirty four is the
final there. J mart with college football basically in the
rear view mirror for Week two, what's your biggest give
me J Mart's biggest Week two college football takeaway. Now,
(01:54:36):
I'm throwing a curveball at you, but lay it on me.
Speaker 3 (01:54:39):
Biggest one one, biggest takeaway.
Speaker 2 (01:54:42):
Whatever you got, Jmart, I mean, if you want. We
only got eleven minutes still, Bernie Fratto takes over, So
I don'tkay.
Speaker 3 (01:54:48):
Well, I would just I would say two things. One,
A lot of pretty good football teams didn't bring their best,
got challenged. Most of them escaped, and I think that's
a fair way to describe it. Saw that across the board.
Oklahoma escape, Penn State escaped, Oregon escaped, most of them escape.
Notre Dame did not. The other big takeaway is I
(01:55:09):
feel real good about my Texas national champion prediction based
on what I saw them do to Michigan. And you
can look at Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee. Is four
teams that I liked coming into the season that still
looked a part. There are some other there are some
flaws and some others, but most of those teams still
(01:55:31):
won and are still undefeated and things are going to
be fine.
Speaker 2 (01:55:35):
Yeah, I would say I agree with you. I thought today,
specifically Texas and Tennessee, maybe they go to Atlanta play
in the SEC Championship to determine who is the real
ut But I thought both of them looked excellent and
they look like complete teams. It's not, you know, in
previous years with both teams, it's been the offense. It's
been throwing the ball around the field. Tennessee rush ferrol
(01:55:57):
about two hundred and fifty yards today in a win
over NC State. They also held the NC State under
two hundred yards of total offense. And Texas winning at
Michigan speaks for itself. By the way. One other kind
of note here I just kind of came across it.
Washington State closing out of victory over Texas Tech, Arizona
State up on Mississippi State although they are holding on
(01:56:18):
for dear life, and USC, you know, USC obviously taking
care of business against Utah State in the fourth quarter.
If Arizona State holds on and USC obviously holds on,
former PAC twelve schools will be twenty one and two
to start the year. You know, it's ancient history now,
but it's just such a bummer that that league could
(01:56:39):
not hold itself together because I thought they were finally
figuring some stuff out. But the only losses were Colorado
Nebraska and Stanford lost to TCU really quickly, Jmark, before
we get out of here, a couple of NFL games
we didn't really get a chance to talk about. Just
give me a quick take. You know Tennessee Titans. For
people who don't know you are in the Nashville area,
you covered the team for years hosting radio. Like I
(01:57:03):
said earlier, feels like there's like a little bit of
revisionist history where nobody liked that team all off season
and now probably in the last like two or three
weeks I've heard of you know, maybe Tennessee won't be
as bad as people think anyway they play obviously the
Chicago Bears. The debut of Caleb Williams. What do you
expecting that one?
Speaker 3 (01:57:23):
I mean, I have liked him. It's not revisionist for me.
I've always felt like they were not being taken nearly
as seriously as they should for the offseason that they had,
and then you add Jones to it. At the end, Hopkins'
health is a big deal, but Levis has already been
better than I thought he was going to be as
a pro. So you look at it from that standpoint,
What are you going to be post Derek Henry. We'll
(01:57:44):
find out, but I can tell you talking to some
people just in the last couple of weeks. One guy
that's very close with the Titans organization. I asked him.
I was just like, what do you think of Callahan.
He's like, oh, I love them, so do the players.
So there's a positive feeling I think behind closed doors
about Tennessee saying they're going to be a contender, but
I do think they're going to be better than people
(01:58:04):
thought months ago. Just just kind of combating what you
were saying. But it's all about Caleb. It's all about
watching Caleb. I heard Calard say he may not even
use red zone. He may just sit and watch every
play of that. And I don't blame him. I mean,
I can't wait see I'm super excited to see his
rookie quarterbacks play. I want to see my guy in
Denver play. I want to see Jaydon Daniels, I want
(01:58:25):
to see Caleb Williams. I look forward to seeing McCarthy
next year, like there's and even Pennix maybe by the
end of the year if he supplants Cousins at some point.
There's a lot. I mean, you got three rookie quarterbacks,
and there's there's some optimism around all of those scenarios.
But watching Caleb and seeing what the Bears might be
able to do, I think that's one of the one
(01:58:47):
of the coolest things about Week one is what is
Caleb Williams going to do? We've talked about him for
years and now we're finally to Week one.
Speaker 2 (01:58:54):
Yeah, speaking of Caleb Williams, By the way, USC is
absolutely destroying Utah State. Maybe it means nothing, but in
an early part of the season where Oregon has not
looked good, Michigan did not look good. Today, USC is
now forty one to nothing. I'll give you another team
that I think is intriguing to me. They're not gonna
lose tomorrow because they're playing the Patriots. But Cincinnati Bengals
(01:59:15):
like weird again, just another weird offseason. Jamar Chase he's
been out, but he practiced the other day and he
said he might still play, but he probably won't play,
you know, And it's like, you know, Joe Burrow obviously
coming off a major injury and it's like, you know,
that was a team that I wanted to believe in
because they've had so much success against Case. But you know,
(01:59:36):
it's just hard to get excited about them with such
a questionable offseason. But we got to get out of here.
J mart that three hours flew on by my man,
It's awesome to have football back. I appreciate you, I
appreciate the crew. Mary Mack on the board, Producer Ian
De Sager for Jason Martin, I'm Aaron Torres. Make sure
