Edwin Paul: India Business Council Chair on Narendra Modi's visit to New Zealand

Narendra Modi's visit has added further impetus to the excitement surrounding the Indian market. 

India's Prime Minister attended a series of business, political and community events in Auckland on Saturday.

He's agreed to a roadmap with Chris Luxon - aiming to double two-way trade by 2030. 

India Business Council Chair Edwin Paul told Ryan Bridge why he isn't concerned about the $20-billion-dollar investment question.

Don't want to get into that. Actually, I mean that's
for the government to nuance the wording, and it's agreed
between both the leaders. Both the leaders have gone public
and made those statements. So it really does not make
it an on the business community. We are focusing on

the outcomes and we've recently had the strategic partnership announced.
So I don't want to get into what the media
interprets between what each one says. I to an agreement
that trained.

I can understand that. The problem we've got now is
we've we've got an FGA that's signed we've got and
we've got our opposition party here in New Zealand with
Chris Hipkins saying to businesses here, go into this with
your eyes wide open. In other words, tread carefully because
it could all be called back on this one clause
that they're both speaking at different ends.

On the left end doesn't seem to know what the
right hand was saying. So, I mean, I appreciate what
you're saying, but it kind of is important, isn't it.

Yeah, it's important, and that's why I think the Strategic
Partnership is a clear, measurable roadmap and it's got ten
agreements with eighteen defined outcomes, and it's sort of for
year period and I think will no sooner than later
as to what it is. And it's quite aspirational. And
I think the announcement of the roadmap on how that

can be achieved and measured over the four years is
the kind of the confidence that we're getting from the
from the government.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, fair enough. When was it cool to see the
Prime Minister here over the weekend?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
I think so he's a rock star.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
He certainly had a big modicaide.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, I mean, it's he's like a celebrity wherever he goes,
and I think he deserves the I mean, the clouds
love him right. So people may hate him for different reasons,
but what we see is like to fill a stadium
of that size and also not just an Auckland wherever
he goes, and I mean that's the kind of a
stone he's getting. And he's the longest serving prime minister

of India, I mean, in the largest democracy. So people
do love him and it was good to see that,
you know, in real life.
