The UK wants to know why three Russian submarines have apparently been examining the country's vital underwater cables and pipelines.

British Defence Secretary John Healey says the subs were tracked over several weeks operating in the north Atlantic.

Russia denies the claims.

More than 90% of the UK's day-to-day internet traffic travels via undersea cables.

Europe Correspondent Vincent McAviney told Ryan Bridge there's been no apparent damage; rather, the British Government is putting Russia on notice.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
So let's go to vincumca any a UK europe correspondent
Vincent tell us about these three Russian subs.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Yeah, this is a story that's come out because the
British government quite unusually frank about this. The Defense Secretary
came out this morning and explained that over a month
long operation, multiple British ships, international ships and aircraft were
involved in the sort of cat and mouse game with
three Russian subs. One of them was an attack sub
and two were robotic research subs that were basically going

(00:30):
around the North Atlantic examining it seems the UK's cable
infrastructure that brings around about ninety percent of our Internet
and then on passes it to the United States, to
the Europe as well, and many of our energy cables.
There are about sixty of those around the country. So
basically this was a message to Russia saying that we
know that a lot's going on in the least, but
we're not distracted. We see what you're doing and we

(00:52):
scared you away and we'll continue to watch.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Tell us about the new exhibition at the King's Gallery,
Buckingham pellas well.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
This is the summer exhibition at Buckingham Palace. So if
any of the listeners are up in London over the summer,
it's well worth checking out because you see not only
the kind of grand state rooms in Buckingham Palace, but
they always put on a special exhibit and this one
is to mark one hundred years since the late Queen,
Queen Elizabeth I's birth and it has over two hundred
pieces including clothing, jewelry, hats, shoes, accessories that she wore

(01:23):
during the decades of her reign. So it will be
quite a walk through history through fashion in the twentieth century.
And you know, I covered royal events for many years
while she was still alive, and she had a saying
which was, you know, I have to be seen to
be believed, and she would always turn up in some
very bright, eye catching outfits and so I think there'll
be quite a lot here to check out.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
Last one Vincent Vinceamecavinio, UK europe correspondent.
