D'Arcy Waldegrave: Sportstalk host on former Warriors forward Kane Evans coming out

Former Warriors forward Kane Evans has come out as gay - and opened up about a long battle with addiction and his mental health.

Evans says he's also dealt with homelessness and has told Channel Nine he's lived in denial for years.

Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave explained further.

warrior who came out and then told his life story,
and that was quite dramatic stuff.

what I enjoyed, or it was most stunned by, was
at the start of this interview Caine Evans, who's had
a checkered career around alcohol, drugs, homelessness. He was a
very aggressive man on the park as well. The stress

that that bloke carried into this interview knowing exactly what
he was about to do and what he was going
to say in fesce up to it almost crushed him
before the end. Who even started the end of the
interview once it had all come out, excuse the pun.
I've never seen relief personified so much in an individual.
The joy on that guy's face, The relief on that

(01:40):
guy's face. He didn't get struck down. There was no
god with lightning bolts and it was all over. He
was like, oh wow, it's been twenty years I've been
keeping the secret to myself. It has been so destructive
and now I've done this.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
And it's actually okay.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Got me about I played it to my daughter this morning,
starting the end of it. She went, our dad, she's fifteen.
Do people still care about that? It's just a guy
having his sexuality. Does it really matter?

Speaker 2 (02:08):
They do, because you remember Ian Roberts when that happened.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Absolutely, and we've had only one all black do it.
But that's probably more of a a male situation than
a female situation. A lot of female athletes are gay
and no one has problem with it. But there's something
about men and collision sports. It freaks people out. Now
you remember the manly situation with the Jerseys as well,

(02:33):
the Rainbow Juicy. The Break has even had it with
the There's something about blokes and homosexuality. They can't deal
with it. But as my daughter pointed out, I told
her that in the mid eighties it's actually it just
became legal to be homoseex She's like, you are kidding men,
that's caveman stuff. So the next generation understand it. They've
got a problem. So things like Caane Evan's doing this

huge for that community.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
It wasn't just that issue though either. It was also
the living in the car and the drugs and the
crime and all that sort of thing. And ivis getting
echoes of Manu Butterfi. Remember when because man who went
through bad times at the end of his career went
into the wrong areas and I ended up having a
good conversation with him in a lift when he was
coming in to do an inspiring talk to a corporate

because he said, this is how you can hit bottom
because of the pressures that surround the alpha male roles
that we have in league.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Well what he had though, Okay, now he's hiding a secret.
Many people saying, oh, we're going to black May who
are going to tell the world, and that eventually just
crushed him. But now mid thirties is gone. It's all right,
It's okay, eventhing's going to be fine again. The difference
between him at the start of the interview and the
end of the interview is worth watching. It personifies relief

I'd like to give him a hug. Probably needs a hug. Yeah,
