D'Arcy Waldegrave: Sportstalk host on the growing concerns over the future of the ANZ Premiership

The lack of information about the future of netball’s ANZ Premiership has sparked concerns among players and industry experts.

It's currently unknown if the tournament will take place in 2027 and beyond, prompting some players to question where they currently stand.

Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave explained further.

I'm not sure that you could say things are going
well for one nation. Pauline Hanson has just declared that

going on? Okay, what is your understanding of the A
and Z Premiership. I've laid out the details just about
like what ten minutes ago. Is it happening next year
or not?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Well, we don't know. But what we do know is
that email has been sent out to three of the franchises,
to the staff and to the coaches saying we'll be
in touch, but there's no negotiations about their contracts continued.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
But they're off contract at the end of the stot.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Days but there's no negotiation going on to carry that
on for the future.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
These people need to pay their mortgages, they're going to
go to jobs.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Believe that it's normally when it comes to the coaching staff,
it is a little later. It does hasn't happen immediately.
But the way this has been written that will be
in touch, it's like, you know, don't call us type
of situation. Now. I haven't seen the email, but I've
talked to a couple of people that had, and we're
going to talk to Leon and Dubrain on the show

tonight as system coach of the Stars, who's obviously up
in that gun as well, talk to us about what
she's seen and what she knows. But it doesn't auger
well if you've got half the teams in the competition
being told we're not really sure. And I think it
comes back to that typical Netbull New Zealand situation where
the communication the exchange of information has been shocking. Again,

(01:41):
I find that really straight unless there's nobody Because we've
got the interim CEO currently out of the Comwealth Games,
I think some of the bigger wigs are over there.
Have the rest of the new suite of management actually
got their feet under the desks yet, is that while
we're not getting anything out of them officially, we would
really kind of like to know what's going on.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Long in the past, you've sat right where you are
right now and you've complained about the communication from Netborn,
New Zealand, and I have thought that you were premature
and your criticism of Netborn New Zealand, But I do
not think you are anymore Like I think if we
are ten days away from staff walking away and finding
new jobs, where are they and why are they not?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
No contract extensions? As it goes. But here's what it is, right,
this is what if you kind of extrapolate the situation
there is what where? Where's the broadcast deal? Where is
the sponsorship for the am Z premiership? Will they want
to be involved? Can they sell that forward? You kind
of can't. So they can't determine any form of future

(02:42):
because they can't pay for it. So maybe they're looking
for a last minute someone's going to come along and
write it in on a white stallion and save the day.
But at the moment it's looking pretty scratchy and sketchy.
And you look at the the collective going on at
the moment as well. Now that's not happening either from

(03:03):
what I understand, So it's really in a state of
flux right now. It's happening in Australia as well. They
they haven't got their collective agreements worked out either. So
teams players from over here can't jump over the ditch
like at the start of this year, because they don't
know what they're doing either in Australia, so no one's
really sure. And then there's the talk around the possibility

(03:25):
the mystics may be turning up in Australia in twenty
twenty eight, but that's another year down the track. So
there's this hole and like we talked about last time,
there's a vacuum information and what do we end up doing?
Well I heard this, I will say that what have
you heard? What do you know? And it starts getting
out and it starts getting in the ecosystem and suddenly
that it runs away.
