Enda Brady: UK correspondent on Donald Trump's recent comments at the NATO Summit in Turkey

Donald Trump says it's a waste of time talking with Iran, declaring the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran 'over'.

The US President has made the comments at the NATO summit in Turkey, as both sides swap strikes.

Trump says his White House negotiators can continue, but he thinks the Iranians are 'liars', calling them cuckoo.

UK correspondent Enda Brady unpacked the reactions further.

Hey Heather, great to speak to you again.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Right, So what did you make of Trump at NATO?
That was unhinged, wasn't it?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
It was, but it wasn't as bad as it could
have been. That's pretty much the vibe. Look, NATO still exists,
they're still together. And the buzz phrase that everyone was
coming out with as he was jetting off was a
stronger Europe, a stronger NATO. So I think it's a
more European NATO. Look, they started spending money like never
before and the bottom line is eleven percent increase on

European defense spending in NATO in twenty twenty six, eleven
percent increase. So look, not that he'll ever be happy
with Europe, but they're dancing to his tune.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
I guess how's everybody feeling about Mark Rutterer, because it
feels to me like he's walking a really fine line
here where he manages to be the Trump whisper, but
then he also crosses over into looking like a Trump apologist.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
But at the same time he's getting the job done,
and I think it's I don't know how it's working
but somehow it is. And I watched the other day,
you know, Trump, he took the news conference and for
every ten words, I'd say Trump was saying eight and
the rutter was getting maybe one and a half to two.
But look, he's treading a very fine line. I think

he's done a great job so far. But look he's
keeping the alliance together, keeping the Americans on board. And yeah,
I felt sorry for the Spanish. Actually, the people I
felt the sorries for this week was Pedro Sanchez of Spain,
who have only ever been a decent country, a democratic country,
and standing up for human rights and speaking up for

the people of Gaza. And they were basically humiliated the
other day by Trump. But look it's over with, it
has passed off, and NATO still exists.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Now what is the sense that you got about how
this is going to play out in the Middle East.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
I think he's going to keep bombing Iran. I mean,
you know, I'd never heard NATO news conference use the
word scum before, and I think he said it five times,
and he really emphasized it. And it has happened again
overnight since he left Turkey A and flew back to Washington, DC.
And I think I think that. You know, if you

look at the price of oil has gone up six
percent overnight here, it's pretty shocking. But that came out
of the blue. Everyone felt that was progress that was
being made towards the end of that in Iran, and
now the Americans are back bombing them.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Right, So what's this case gonna cost Harry?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Well, I think he's gonna have to sit down with
his very wealthy friends and divvy up who's going to
pay towards one hundred million end Z because that's the
bottom line between six of them. Now, look, Elton John
can write that off with shrapnel in the car. He
can probably just open a glove compartment in the car.
But for Harry, that is a different story. I don't
care how wealthy you are, sixteen seventeen million en Z

is an awful lot of dough to find. He's been
poorly advised, really really poorly advised. And if someone tells
me that Harry was taking advice from lawyers, that's who's
been advising him. Because I've spent the goods of thirty
years in and out of the High Court, and I
remember my very very first day at the High Court
I asked a lawyer, so how much does a day

here cost all up? And I just couldn't get my
head round the figures And they were there for ten weeks,
So go figure. He's been poorly advised. But look, that's
the story of Harry's life. I think he surrounded himself
by people who he likes to have listened to his
various different winges and whims.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I mean, I almost think also that he scored himself
an own goal by doing this, hasn't he? Because the
male is going to come after him even harder now,
aren't they.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Oh, he's got the biggest enemy in the world right there.
They're not going to stop. They're not going to stop
everything he does. I think I'd love to I'd love
to have maybe sat with him for an hour over
a beer or a coffee ten years ago and just said,
let me just tell you how this is going to roll.
You're gonna end up skint and you're gonna end up hated.
And that's what's happening.

Yeah, Now, can we have a debate about whether Arthur
Fry is infect British.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Look, they're going to start flying flags with his face
on it if he wins the next game. It's going
to be an interesting do you know what? In all
honesty with Andy Burnham coming in as Prime Minister on
July twentieth, it's going to be a very interesting week
next week. If England keep winning soccer matches and Arthur
Ferry keeps winning tennis matches, Andy Burnham is going to

get off to an absolute flyer inside Downing Street and
I think he could end up being probably the most
loved prime minister of the last decade. But look, they're
going to claim him in all honesty. Look, you know
young Emma Raducanu with her surname and her Romanian dad.
She won the US Open as a wildcard as a qualifier.
So let's see what this guy Ferry does. He's brilliant.

I've loved watching him and it's badly needed because let's
be frank, you know, the English never ever really got
their hearts around Andy Murray, which was which was a
shame I felt.
