The Labour Party has pledged to review the Emissions Trading Scheme if elected, and claims the current price is 'too low' to drive down reductions.

In an earlier announcement, leader Chris Hipkins said the party would make changes to the scheme - and that they wouldn't campaign on pricing agricultural emissions, a departure from their earlier stance.

The Country's Jamie Mackay has admitted he supports this development, and unpacked the rest of the party's announcement.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jamie Mackay, host of The Country's Back With Us. Welcome back, Jamie.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
That's good to be back, Heather.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Mate, we got worried about you. Was that just the
flu that you had?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yeah, influenza A, but I must say, I did hear
you between five and six talking about my near-death experience.
And I'll throw a wee bit of Mark Twain back
at you, Heather. The reports of my death have been
greatly exaggerated, but it did. It bowled me for three
weeks or less, three weeks less. One day, I literally

(00:31):
never get sick. Famous last words. I'm infamous in the
office for giving millennials and gen zedders and wires a
hard time about being soft and we don't have sick
days on the country but this one got me uh
well and truly and i tried about three comebacks and
each time i kind of failed i had to have

(00:51):
rest halfway up the stairs just to walk upstairs so
look at it was brutal and i'm blaming the zb
100 either that heather Well, the following day when I
was in Auckland, before I went down and spread my
germs to the Tauranga office, I did that open day,
you know, the City Rail Link open day with Rowena,
who used to work with me. And we walked through

(01:12):
the Karangahapi station, beautiful, and had a look around about
your underground rail. But then I'm thinking my hands were
on those kind of escalator things that go up and down.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
And then you put them straight in your mouth, didn't you?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Straight in my mouth, yeah, sucking my thumb. And there
I go. But anyhow, to anyone who's had Influence A,
it's brutal.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah, well, I'm pleased to hear that you're okay. Now,
what do you make of Labour and the ETS changes?

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Well, it's a bit of a U-turn, isn't it? I'm
pleased that they've done it. And I think this is
pragmatism from Chippy. But it is a bit of a
U-turn when you look at, you know, the Labour Party
of 2020 to 23, when they had complete control. This
is the outfit that wanted to introduce Hewaka Ekanawa and
effectively get rid of roughly 20% of the sheep and

(02:01):
beef farms in this country. This is also the outfit,
and they're duck shoving this one. They're blaming Shane Jones,
and he's quick to blame them about the billion tree program,
like from 2017 to 20. But look, I'm pleased to
see it. I don't think agriculture should be priced in
the ETS category. And the reason for that is our issues.

(02:24):
And I've long held disbelief and I'm not going to
change my mind. You know, we've got a split gas approach.
The problem with global warming and emissions is not necessarily
ruminants expelling methane. It's man-burning fossil fuel. So interestingly, Chippy
is fully also committed to the Paris Agreement, which gives

(02:47):
them more in common with the Nats than the Nats
have with the likes of New Zealand First and the
ACT Party. They're going to try and What he's saying
is rampant tree planting has depressed, and he's right about this,
has depressed the emissions trading scheme price without encouraging emissions
reductions because these big players internationally are just buying their

(03:09):
way out of pollution or planting their way out of pollution.
And he's hoping that some of the large exporters would
drive emission reduction changes themselves. And he quoted Fonterra and
Silver Fern Farms, our biggest dairy and our biggest meat companies,
trying to reduce emissions. However, when you look at the numbers,
they're not that flash, Heather. Fonterra, for example, targeting a 30%

(03:33):
reduction in admissions by 2030 compared to the the peg
in the sand year of 2018 as of 2025 last
year they'd only achieved just a 3.8 percent reduction there's
a long way to go but i say good on
chippy and uh at least at least heather uh labor
has come out with some ag policy.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Yeah well there is that at least there's something because
it was but did you see the q a federated
the q a um farmer.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Debate yes i did i i um I studied it closely,
and some of the commentary around that had Steve Abel
killing the debate. Well, the only thing Steve really, the
Green Party ag spokesperson, killed was the prospect of having
a farming industry that's sustainable in this country. Look, poor
old Jo Luxton. I felt sorry for her. Labour's ag...

(04:23):
She was laughed at. They were mocking her. And I
think Chippy should have given us some ag policy to
release because all she could say is we've got some
ag policy coming. For God's sake, we're less than two
months out from an election now. They need to get
this out. So this was a good start. Look, I
thought and Daniel Airby, the Opportunity Party, look, beware. of

(04:44):
the Opportunity Party. If you're a farmer, he got some
of his numbers badly wrong on cow numbers and dairy
herd numbers and all that sort of stuff. To be honest,
I thought Andrew Hoggard might have won the debate from
the ACT Party.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah, I thought he was quite capable. We're very confident
as well. Jamie, thank you, mate. It's good to have
you back. We'll talk to you in a couple of days.
Jamie Mackay, host of The Country.
