Philip Aldridge: Industry Skills Board CEO on the new school subjects being offered for Years 12 and 13

An energy sector specialist says new school subjects on offer, will bring students closer to workplace realities.

The Government's announced nine new subjects for Years 12 and 13, from 2029.

Industry Skills Board CEO, Philip Aldridge, says the new Energy and Infrastructure course is much more practical than subjects available now, and tailored to the industry. 

"It's about aligning the skills and the training and education to real jobs, and ultimately New Zealand's productivity."

So one of the announcements overshadowed by what the Prime
Minister has said was Erica Stanford's announcement of nine new
subjects for years twelve and thirteen students. The subjects are
AI Construction, Energy, Engineering, next Gen Manufacturing, food and fiber, healthcare,
hospitality and Tourism. Philip Balldridge is the CEO of the
Energy and Infrastructure Skills Boarding with US.

High Philip, Hi, Heather, how are you yan? Very well?

Thanks mate? You like this list.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
It's fantastic. It's really a fundamental change. Yeah, it's a
fantastic mister from the government.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
What is it that an energy and infrastructure class would
teach kids that a science class wouldn't.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
I think there's three things that across the subjects, and
we'll come back to energy. It's builds awareness, so students
and parents don't know what the crew is out there. Secondly,
it's a lot more practical focus than what's called the
ministrative subjects like biology and physics. And thirdly, it's really
around training and apprenticeships of real jobs. So it's about
aligning the skills and the training and education through real jobs.

(01:00):
Ultimately easy ones productivity.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
All right, So can kids walk out of a year
thirteen class go straight into a job or would they
need further study.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
It's up to the kids and up to the areas,
but certainly we want they can do that where they
can go onto university. Well then gificational pathway like an
apprenticeship on the job or go to polytech. But certainly,
for example in our sector, the water sexcept for example,
extra and other areas. Order is expected to have a
forty eight billion dollar investment over the next ten years.

Forty eight billion. We need an extra six thousand people. Now,
if you go into schools and ask kids that, they
wouldn't know that. So we need those schools for our
industries to grow and prosper interesting, So Philip.
