Sir Bob Charles: 1963 Open Championship winner on being joined by Ryan Fox

Ryan Fox has become the third New Zealand golfer to win a men's major title with his victory at the men's Open Championship, 63 years after Sir Bob Charles did it the first time.

"I think all New Zealand golfers will be proud of his effort and let's hope that it, makes a lot of younger people, consider getting into the golf game," he said on Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive.

"It's a game of a lifetime, the greatest game of all."

Evening. So Ryan Fox has become the third New Zealand
golfer to win a men's major title, sixty three years
after Sir Bob Charles did it the first time. He
also did what many consider did it at what many
considered to be the biggest of the four tournaments, which
is the Open Championship, obviously, and Sir Bob watched it
today and he's with us.

Thank you? Do you bring back did it bring back
memories for you?

Yeah? Distant memories for sure. Yeah, I know I was.
I didn't watch it in live, but I did watch
the fifteen minute review afterwards, and I feel proud of
Ryan and excited for him for his well for his future,
and there's what his future has made now. But it's

a great day for Ryan, it's a great day for
New Zealand golf. I think all New Zealand golfers will
be proud of his effort. And let's hope that it's
a lot of younger people consider getting into the golf game.

Would you have been as aggressive as he was and
just gone for it with the.

Pat No, I was totally opposite to Tryan and my philosophy.
I was playing safe, safe, safe, and just hit it
down the fairway, hit it on the green and then
try and knock it in the hole. And that was
kind of the game which he was using. But he
was using his power off the tea to advantage. He

has huge distance off the tea. I was only a
short hitter so by comparison to my contemporaries, but he's
right up there with the longest of the long and
he's he's already enjoyed a great two years. Last year
he won two tournaments, one of which was the Canadian Open.

And of course now we've got to get him back
here to New Zealand to win a New Zealand Open.
He hasn't been able to play in recent years, but
he can skip a few tournaments now and maybe give
some support to our New Zealand Open down at Millbrook.

How hard is it to come back and defend the title.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Well, in golf, the only place to go back and
defend on the same golf course would be augusta National
for the Masters. So next year the Open is that
back at the home of golfs and Andrews, which I

think Ryan is pretty familiar with and it wouldn't surprise
me if he ran well. Of course at Snandrews has
built for the longheaders as most golf courses are, but
a lot of the power fours are reachable in one
at Sernandrews, so I would put some money on him

for repeat next year at Sandrew's.
