Marcus Lush experiences Southland earthquake live on air

Newstalk ZB's Night Host Marcus Lush felt the 5.9 magnitude earthquake from his Invercargill studio. 

The quake struck 40km north of Te Anau at 9.14pm this evening at a depth of 53km.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has assessed the quake and says strong currents are possible on the West Coast of the South Island from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point.

It has downgraded its tsunami warning to an advisory.

Oh goodness me, Marcus, Yeah, well quite a big one.
My thoughts going out to you. I know it is.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
I will survive. Where's the where's the cash? Well, where's
the cash? The money? We sinds it is quite a
big quake.

Anyway, Well, I'll be listening to what it was and
my thoughts going out. He used down the air as

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Thanks Dave, if you felt the other Dave Marcus, where
are you, cargol? It was it was strong, wasn't it.

Speaker 4 (01:38):
Well, I've got a pendulum clock just over on the
wall there and she waits still banging and the light
it only happened about thirty seconds ago for me anyway,
and the lights of swaying. But my pendulum weights on
the clock are still moving here. It was a sudden jolt.

Curious Marcus. Good evening, Vanessa, Hi Vanessa, I said to
the Vanessa, did you feel that quae? Yes, the whole

So it's a strong quake. It's a six point three
forty k southwest of Milford. Sound.

Oh see that that's really that. It was really shaking.

I'm in bed reading my book and I was shaking
back the boards.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
So would you say, you said, moscule a Yes, wow, that.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Right remind me of the christ Church quake. That's why
I wring up. I thought, Oh my goodness.

Yeah, I'll just try to work out whether I stay
on deck or just tap out. What do I do?

Oh, Marcus, I guess you'd have felt it more than
Dunedin were in bluff. It was too though, wasn't it.

Vanessa said there was two, but I thought one was
the after shock. But Dave, I think so, I said,
because it was a bit close for an after shock.
So yeah, I guess that was.

So. We had birds going a bit and saying as
we've bendored is the two dogs didn't do anything and
the cat stood upright?

No, No, and I've only had and I've done radio
for twenty years. I've only had one one other time.
It's been on here. So yeah, that was a real shock. Anyway, Diane,

Yeah, Marcus, here, I was trying to ring him before
you actually got it or the earthquake, because we had
it here, but it went for about twenty seconds. It's
just backwards and forwards, backwards and forward.

Yeah, So I'm going to try to do it straight away.

I want eight seconds delay. So once I talked about it,
had you heard eight seconds before that? Because you're in OHI,
you might have heard it sooner.
