Chris Schulz: The Rolling Stones - Foreign Tongues

The Rolling Stones continue to roll on. 

They’ve just released their 25th studio album, ‘Foreign Tongues’, a 14-track record that was recorded in just under a month in West London. 

It reunites the band with producer Andrew Watt and features guest appearances from Paul McCartney, Robert Smith, Steve Winwood, and Chad Smith, as well as a song recorded with Charlie Watts prior to his passing. 

Chris Schulz has been listening to the album, and joined Jack Tame to share his thoughts.

Killed to Jack. Those numbers are crazy right like this.
They've been going so long it's almost ridiculous. They are
aside from The Beach Boys, they are the longest running,
still active rock band in the world six decades. And
the Beach Boys is debatable. They've only got one original
member left and he's not the front man. The Rolling
Stones have three members still kicking. But they're old. They're

so old. Mc jagger is eighty three this month, Keith
Richards is eighty two and Ronnie Wood is seventy nine.
They don't need to be doing this, but I'm kind
of glad they are. You can sort of hear it
in that Song's there's some there's some there's some figure,
there's some kick there's some spark in this album, more
than twenty twenty four's Hackney Diamonds, the last album that

(01:55):
was criticized for lacking a bit of that kind of
like attitude that the Rolling Stones you usually have. You
can't hear it on this album. It opens with this
kind of blues rock monster of a song. It's it's
it's a it's a way to kick off a proper
rock album. And there's bits of that all the way
through the record. So yeah, I was surprised at how uh,

how do I want to wold that use the word
youth fool? Probably not, But but they sound they sound alive.
They do sound like they're the Rolling Stones again, and
that's that's a good thing. They are having some fun
with this. My dad reminded me this morning that when
he was a kid, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles
with the bands that they you know, that was their rebellious,

(02:42):
rebellious music. That was their rage against the machines sort
of for that era. But they had a famous rivalry, well,
Paul McCartney's on this album, which sort of shows you
that they're kind of enjoying themselves right to invite their
their famous rival onto their album. Bruno Mars is on here.
He's credited on one song for playing cowbell, which made

(03:06):
me laugh. But the moment I kind of fell in
love with this Era of the Rolling Stones is a
song called hit Me in the Head and I'm going
to read you out. The lyrics, Mick Jaggers sings, one
of these days, I'm going to fall down dead. I'd
go a lot quicker if you hit me in the
head now. I thought that might be a reference to
the two thousand and six incident. Do you remember when

(03:27):
Keith Richards fell out of a tree and feet he
was airlifted to New Zealand. The tabloids had a field day.
This was headline news for weeks. He had a concussion
he recovered in era. But no, it just sounds like
they're poking fun at their age, and you kind of
want that from a band at this point, right like,
it is ridiculous. It's ridiculous they're still here. It's crazy

(03:50):
they're still going. I guess the big question is are
they going to tour? You know that they have sort
of spoken about it. Mick Jaggers suggested a stadium run
could happen in twenty twenty seven. I kind of feel
like that would be a big deal.

It would be huge, It would be huge.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah, what is satisfaction like when Mick Jagger is eighty four? Like,
I mean, that's unprecedented, right. Yeah. Where the Keith Richards
is up to it? I think is the question. He's
got arthritis in his hands. He does say that some
days he wakes up and his knuckles are so gnarly
he can't really play guitar. So it'll it'll.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Probably definitely make it tricky. Yeah, yeah, so what did
you give it? What did you give foreign tongues?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I'm gonna I'm gonna give it three and a half,
you know, Moses Mark. Yeah, with the album cover, the
album covers awful and there's an Amy Winehouse cover on
here that I really also didn't enjoy. They cover her
song you Know No Good. It's in the middle of
the album. It just kind of stops everything.

Yeah.

If they'd sort of shrunk it to ten songs, that
would have been better.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, well, have it listen to another song in a
