Kevin Milne: Highly impressed after a visit to Christchurch

Kevin Milne has just returned from a week-long trip to the Garden City and found himself rather impressed with the experience. 

He told Jack Tame it’s not the Christchurch he once knew – it's a brand-new glittering, uber cool replacement.  

And with how much he enjoyed himself, he had to recommend anyone listening to consider a holiday or long-weekend stay in the city.

I just think it's classic. Really possibly could only happen
in New Zealand that on a Sunday morning you flick
on your Telly to the most gripping dramatic political interviews
like Scarily Scarily Edgy, and then on Saturday Morning, the
same man as talking about the difference between the fabric

shaver and the lint roll?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Have you have you ever used?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
It? Is true?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
This is this is what gives makes life interesting.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Right.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
You want to have variety, you want to have contrast.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Absolutely, I love it. I'm not the least being critical.
I think it's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Have you used a fabric shaver before?

Speaker 3 (00:59):
I think I have. Yes, Yeah, I don't know. Does
a fabric shaver have to be a battery?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I think yeah, I think it does. But I think
some people use the combs. You know, the comb was
the old old school way of doing it, but the
fabric shaver is a bit more efficient and it does
have there's something quite satisfying when you go over a
little patch that has a lot of you know, kind
of linten fuzz and everything else, all all the kind
of pilled bits. And you go over that and it's

almost like when you are mowing the lawn and you
go over a really thick but and you hear it going,
you know, you hear the kind of engine, you know,
really really straining against the grain. It's quite satisfying. Yeah. Anyway, yeah, you,
I mean, we've we've thought for a long time, Kevin,
you and I that christ Church is amazing. But today

you want to talk about why you've been blown away
by by progress in the three Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
I've recently returned from five days five days down in
christ Church. Linda and I were astonished. This is not
the christ Church I once knew. It's a brand new,
littering uber call replacement high rise after high rise of
remarkable design. Christ Church, of course, always led the way
in architecture, stylish clubs and bars, sharp offices, apartments. We

dined at the downtown King of Snake, which sits on
the Avon River Precinct near the Bridge of Remembrance. It
provided the most glorious decor and food of any of
us can remember in New Zealand, and of course there's
the jewel in the crowd, the Takaa Stadium, which has
already bought the Canterbury community together like nothing else since

(02:43):
the christ Church Commonwealth Games. It's exactly the sort of
roofed stadium now needed in Auckland and Wellington. Looking just
beyond christ Church itself. I have to mention the stunning
or pook Hair thermal pools in Methon near Mount Hutski Fields.
Have you been there?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
No? No, I'm desperate to go the best. They booked
out a year in advance, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
You've got to go there. Honestly, it leaves every other
thermal pool i'm aware of for dead in terms of
designing convenience. I liked that you didn't have to leave
your pool for a drink or a meal, just slide
over to the pool side bar and have them served
to you on floating trays. We were there at night,

(03:31):
and because you're near the mountains, miles from city lights,
you lie back and admire the clearest night sky you've
ever seen. I urge any New Zealander to consider a
holiday or a long weekend in category. It's now, without
doubt the coolest place to go in New Zealand, and
I don't mean the early morning temperature. All it needs

(03:54):
now is an NURL League side and a super rugby
team jack.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Very droll, very droll. Well, First of all, I reckon
it'll have an NRL team, certainly within five years, but
maybe within three. That's my pick. Forge. And second of all,
I mean you are preaching to the converted. You know,
Canterbury is just going from strength to strength at the moment.
But I'm alarmed Kevin that you've left before the rugby.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Ah. Yes, well I was there for the league too,
but I didn't know I was going to be down
there right and couldn't get in.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Ah so you haven't yet been inside to kaha.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah no, I'm driven around.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, no, I'm the same Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
No, no, no, not really. You know, obviously I've got
to get in there at some point. Yeah, yeah, no,
it is.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
It is amazing. I mean, it's it's obviously been a
long time coming, and you know, it's I can imagine
that people in Christ which probably get sick of you know,
folks like you and I saying, oh Christ is just
so good, because they're the ones who've had to go
through the decade and a half of disruption and frustration
and everything else, but my goodness, for people who love
that part of the world, it is just so good

(05:04):
to see the city in such a good place.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Absolutely, absolutely, I agree to get down there, get down there.
I'm not trying to sell the place. I'm not paid
to say anything. I just think this is christ Church. Fantastic.
Good on you. You've been through so much difficulty, so much horror,
and now you deserve this. It's bloody brilliant.
