The newest season of Celebrity Treasure Island is officially underway.
One week in, there’s already been injuries, eliminations, and tears – but why would someone decide to compete?
Kevin Milne is wondering just what is motivating these Kiwi celebrities to sign up for the beach-based challenges.

He was a wee bit behind the other guid. Yeah. Yeah,
he came in at about twenty thousand. I think there
were I think there are about fifty thousand people running
it and yeah, he he. I'll turn something interesting that
somebody knitted a scarf while they were running the London Marlin. Gosh,

really isn't that great? Yeah, they have they actually have
a competition the person who can knit the longest scarf
while they're running the race. Wow, and this this guy
made a scaff that would be, you know, a reasonably
decent scarf. Yeah, while he was running. While he was running,
it was a bloke funny. And also of course they
have the the fastest time for somebody running in a

suit and patent leather suits. Yeah, and that the fastest. Yeah.
But the fact this is amazing. They must do something
with the shoes. But the fastest guy came got around
in less than three hours. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
That's ridiculous, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
That is absolutely inact. Yeah, you'd have to have specially
made patent leather shoes.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Well you think so, wouldn't you'd have to have something?
It's nuts. I don't know. I mean I love that
you see those images, you know that the fastest time
by a person wearing a three meter giraffe outfit.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
You're like, why would you do this? Like, isn't a
marathon hard enough? But apparently not for some people. Yeah,
it really is quite extraordinary. But you've been focused on
some other entertainment this week, Kevin, You have been watching
the new series of Celebrity Treasure Island.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, yeah, I have for better or word. I mean
it's enjoyable. Some interesting issues arise, like why would you
do it? Is it a matter of needing to keep
your celebrity face on screen? It kind of almost a
business decision for those yet to make a name for themselves,
(02:09):
as the invitation impossible to say no to. When the
producers say over the phone, we think you'd be brilliant,
we think you'd be hilarious, we think you'd look gorgeous.
Just a flattery one the day. Some might take part
purely to win a large pot of cash for their
favorite charity, but I'm not sure there'd be many. Apart
(02:30):
from anything on Celebrity only the winner really makes any
breathtaking amount of money for their charity. Jack, I've no
doubt you've been several times to take part in Celebrity
Treasure Island. You've obviously said no so far, but you'd
be damn good would you ever do it? Ah?
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Well, I can see you're also going down the flattery
line there, I can see, Kevin. Do you know what?
I have never personally been asked to be on Celebrity
Treasure Island. Maybe I haven't reached the threshold of celebrity,
but suspect, well, I suspect that my employers might step
in if if I were asked. And also I'm not
(03:14):
I'm just I'm not someone who is very esthetically pleasing
when competing in various events. You know, I'm not someone
who looks good with the shirt off. I'm not someone
who you know, looks good running down a sandy beach
or anything like that. I'm not exactly your David Hasselhoff,
So I'm not sure looking at me for that side
(03:34):
of things.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
You know, I always suspect the reason we haven't done
it's just so damn busy. You'd have to break so
many contracts.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
It's yeah, it's certainly it's tricky because they have to
go away for a couple of weeks at a time,
don't Yeah, yeah, that'd be.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
The same life that you should grab every opportunity that arises.
You know, that sounds good, But I'm not sure that
some opportunities aren't poisonous chalices. I think I can reveal
some twenty years later that I was asked to be
on the first series of Dancing with the Stars. I
got that fawning phone call saying the audience would love me,
(04:13):
didn't matter I couldn't dance, I'd be really funny, and besides,
I'd be amazed how quickly I picked up the steps
in the arms of a professional dancer. My large ego
at the time loved hearing all this. But thank god
I wasn't swayed. I declined to dance and never ever
regretted it. I'd have been awful, an embarrassment to myself
(04:37):
and everyone who loved me. Jack, I reckon sometimes in life,
the best thing you can ever do is say no.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Yeah true. I mean I for what is with Kevin?
I think you would have been amazing. I also think
can you be extraordinary on Celebrity or Island. I could
see you on the air, you know, of the good
old days where they were like, oh, today's challenges you
got to eat a rat penis or something like that.
There's none of that anymore.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
No, no, no, no, But yeah, I think you've got
I think you've got to be young and cool really
to look Oh oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
All the more reason, Kevin, all the more reason. Do
you know what I just I will say this about
Celubritories Island. People love to kind of tease it and principle,
but I think it is a fantastic show for a
couple of reasons. It's super entertaining. But I actually think
it's a really great celebration of New Zealand because you
have all of these different people from completely different backgrounds,
(05:32):
completely different stories.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Right.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
So you've got your Poorscha Woodman's and your Frank Bunzers
have had kind of you know, high flying sporting careers.
But then you put them alongside you know, actors and
musicians and people who have totally different experiences and you
put them all together and it's quite an intense environment.
So they form really strong relationships and I think it's
(05:55):
a really I think it's really self aware, like it's
kind of it's always taking the mickey out of itself
in a way that New Zealanders do and I just
I reckon it's an absolute delight.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Well, I think people listening today will be astonished. You've
never been asked you would send to me to be
the perfect person? Really?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Ah well, thank you, Kevin. I can see you know,
having just told us about the flattery that you received
on that call about dancing with the stars and advising
us to say no. Given's trying to trying to get
me to take a different a different piece of advice.
You're trying to seduce me down a different line.
