This week sees New Zealand host one of its most significant international trade meetings in two decades.

Auckland is hosting the Future of Investment and Trade Partnership meeting, which brings together 10 ministers and 100 delegates from 21 different countries.

The intention is to reduce barriers and boost trade – particularly for small and medium-sized economies.

Latin America New Zealand Business Council Executive Officer Ana Azevedo told Mike Hosking free trade is part of the discussion, but they’re also looking for other commonalities and points they can align on.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
A hot off the back of India. More trade talks

(00:02):
underway this week with the FIT the FIT Partnership, bringing
together ten ministers, one hundred delegates, twenty one country. So
what is FIT? Anna as a Vedo as the executive
director or executive officer of the Latin America and New
Zealand Business Council, and it is with us very good
morning to you, good money. How are you very well
and doing? Thank you? So the future of investment and
trade partnership is what FIT is? Is this a thing

(00:23):
that's going anywhere? Or is this just a chatfest?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
What they mean?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Well, is it going anywhere? Is it going to turn
up as something tangible like an FTA?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Oh, it's a pusson. It's a non binding conversation negotiation.
It's not need to be like a former FDA. What
is what is a binding agreeming? So this is the
defensive moving stay. It's a small living size trading economy

(00:57):
is getting together, aligned together enough? Maybe unstable world when
you think of do policics.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
What what's the commonality of the countries involved? Is it
just the size or there other strains in there as well?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Think how it's more than the size. We have to
think about shared the venues, about common goals. Uh So
it's seventeen countries, and I have to say that I'm
far more involved with There's the election of America part
of it. Then there's the whole twenty five doctrine in trade.
But yeah, there is always more than just the size

(01:34):
of the countries.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Is it about generally free trade?

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Look, it's part of it, but again we need more
than just a sweet fader. And I think with all
the countries that year develop, even like their fleet fada
and its tent more formal like spy creepy pee, you
are also looking for this other points or the other
commonality because it's a lot of negotiations, conversations, years of

(02:07):
padish common goals. So you don't go just for the
size of the tent to use well.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
The type, something good comes out of it. Good luck
with it. Nice to talk to you. And as a
vouda out of the Latin American New Zealand Business Council,
I apologize for the line. I hope you can hear
at least the gist of it that are broadly speaking,
it's a lot of small or medium sized country sort
of joining together to do something productive. For more from
