Speaker 1 (00:00):
Roger two Varster Sheeck seems to have successfully filled his
time between getting injured and ending the season for the Warriors,
and his next big gig is a two year deal
with Wakefield Trinity in the British Super League next year.
Until then, he has a NU stint with Sky TV
expert Handleist. His first home games with the Dragons this
coming Saturday, and Roger two Varster Sheck is.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Will it's good to see you, good morning morning.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Let's talk about the injury first of all, and the
state of the famous knee. How is it?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Yeah, it's going good, thank you. Yeah, definitely definitely devastated
and cut at the time it happened, and you know,
I had big plans for the season being my final
seating with the club, but yeah, that was taken away
and you just have to move on and I'll be
really lucky. I've got something to move on too, and
that's what's cool.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
So did it take you a period of time psychologically
to get over that and going my time at the
Warriors is done? Or is that just life?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
No, I definitely took a toll on me. I was
really really sad, really gutted that that was my last
inning for the club. You know, I've really invested a
lot into the Club of the Warriors, and I love
that place. But you have really devastated that I'm leaving
that way. So yeah, but that that period has passed
and I'm in a better place now and I'm just
all about pumping up the club and trying to do
(01:11):
do good things for it. And Sky is one thing
that I can, you know, go on there and talk
about the love of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
How's it work contractually? Tell him you don't need to
tell me stuff that you're not allowed to. But when
a player gets injured, are you still contracted to the club,
and can you go? Clearly you can go and do
other stuff given you won't be playing on the field
for the rest of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yes, for sure. So I'm still with the club. I
still have a responsibility with the club. I have other
work that I can do. So We've We're lucky and
I've got so many sponsors that I can go and
spend time with. I've got a role with the coaches
giving me a job to look after our younger boys,
our outside backs. So I go and help them give
them some tips here and here and there, and then
(01:54):
at the same time, I still get to use the
gym and do all my rehabs. So goes both ways.
And then now that I have more time from training,
allows me to go do this and go join sky.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Does it miss you? I talked to talk to you
before we came to wed. But does it mess with
your head? The fitness thing, the worry about losing fitness
when you're injured and how you get around that.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, for sure. So and that's all I know. That's
a routine thing for me is training and training. So
when I got injured, it's you know, I'm always on
either one side of you know, who cares. I'm just
going to eat this and drink that and do whatever.
And then on other stages, no, I still got to
I still got a job to do, you know. I
want to be fit and want to be there for
the players.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
So yeah, and second and second knee injury, same bit
different the psychology of coming back from that and whether
you will or do second guess yourself on the field
and when you play.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
I think, yeah, like I've like you said, I've done
it before. I was able to get past that down
period a lot quicker having kids this time around and
my wife, So there's a lot of support there and
they take my mind off of the injury by going
back to playing. I think I'm more excited because I've
come back from that. I went from twenty sixteen, told
my ACL twenty seventeen I was Warrior's Player of the Year.
(03:07):
So things like that really give me confident that I
could come back from this injury. And I'm going to
a club that I've got some expectations that I want
to feel and I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
What are they How good's the club? What do you
know of the club and what do you think is
going to happen?
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, Wakefield Trinity, they're tracking really well at the moment,
they're sitting there top three. I think they're going really
one to Super League and and with my sort of play,
I want to go there and be the best. And
that's something that I've said to the club and I've
said to my partner. I don't just want to go
there and be one of those those older fellows that
just go to enjoy the holiday. I want to go
there and be the best, and I have confidence I can.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
What do you know about the north of England in
that part of the world.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Very cold, very cold, and they play a lot of games,
but it's a beautiful place and that's the whole attraction,
is to take my family over and show them a
different side of the world. And that's something I want
to do personally. And at the same time, there's goals
that I want to achieve and I could have do
it this year, but I want to go do what
over there?
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Is it cream? And where are you at with your career?
In that sense? Is that I know you want to
do well, and you will do well, but as part
of it, it's cream on the cake. You've done amazing things.
Are you enjoying it now or are you still sort
of driven in that maniac well I need to be
better way.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, it's a bit of both. I'm stuck in that
question myself. A lot of times. It's like, hey, you're
the old Filer, You've got all these accolades already, Like
why don't just go there and travel Europe and enjoy life?
And yeah, I could do that, but it's I really
want to go there and show my talent and show
who I am because that's a whole new crop over there,
and I'm excited to take on that challenge. Yeah, because
(04:39):
I still want to be the best, and if I
chase that, then then I know I'll perform instead of
going over there think and it's a holiday.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
It's funny. I was thinking about you. I don't know
if I'm a big Warriors fan. I've been a Warriors
fan for thirty years, so you, to my eye as
a fan, disappeared a little bit because for a while
there earlier as you weren't scoring as many tribes as
you used to do, but then you still under scoring
again and then saying, oh, this is on Roger, But
I looked at your stats. You were all over the field.
(05:06):
You were like doing a couple of hundred meters a game.
You were like you were as instrumental, And it's just
because you didn't necessarily score the try. People don't think
that you see what I'm saying. Yeah, do you feel
as a player is effective just you don't have to
score it try? You can be as effective as a
player if you're doing the yards and getting the ball
and moving it forward.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Yeah, for sure. So that's I felt like That's always
been my sort of best attribute to our club was
my work ethic and being able to get our team
in the position for us to score, and of course
I would love to have scored more, especially being on
their left wing. I'd love to have got more tries.
As a winger, that's normally what you're paid to do,
and we're lucky we've got candid now. But for me,
it's all about how can I do other things defensively
(05:45):
get our team in a place to score. And I've
been moved around in the last year or so, so
from wing to senate it's a fullback to Senate's a wing,
So just trying to find how I can best give
my performance capable.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
By the way the news this morning, he's extended, so
so that's encouraging, isn't Also we're getting past that thing,
you know. You look at Barnett and Capell and all
those guys. For a long period of time for the Warriors,
getting people here was a problem, and sometimes keeping them
here was a problem. Is are we overcoming that to
some degree?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I think we are overcoming that one with we finally
have a reason for boys to come over because they
could come over and learn how to play rugby league
a lot better. Before it was a hard sale. And
the other one was we are now creating our own pathway.
So the challenges there, like all of the jacob Lebans Alecqua,
they came for our own pathway. So that's that's exciting.
So and then having Cape we'll stay longer makes it
(06:38):
even more more better for us.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
What do you reckon? The magic is this year? I mean,
what's happened this year?
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Our young boys have grown another year from last year.
They all got a taste of what success looks like.
They all believe in our system and it's a real
simple system. And I think that's why all the boys
are loving Webby and loving how we work. And it
shows them.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Because there's something about him. Having interviewed him now many
many times, this something I don't know what it is.
There's a magriic. He's a likable guy. I love the guy. Yeah,
I don't even play for him, but I love him.
Is that the feeling within the side.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, we all want to do something before where because
he's real clear on what he wants. And I think
when you're clear, you're not trying to hide things or
do and to say one thing and do another thing.
I think that's that really makes it tough. But he's
real clear of us. He knows, we know what the
job he wants us to do, and we can go
out there and perform that and it's either yes, you
did it right or no, you did it wrong. Here's
(07:29):
your improvement. And I think that's why it's really helping
the boys, and that's why those young boys are growing
a lot quicker because the jobs are clear.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Do you worry in any way, shape or form as
the season gets to the crunchy? But so, so what's
exciting for us this year? We're not having a conversation
about the eight because that's there. Yes, we're probably not
even having a conversation about before. Ye, so you're there.
So do you worry that when it gets really crunchy,
that you know that there's a few people on that
(07:57):
side that might not have been there, not be experience
enough in my panic?
Speaker 2 (08:02):
You know, last year I would have said yes. But
this year, I think with that experience, we were in
the same position similar to last year, and we had
the mindset last year of I hope we stand this eight.
I hope we stand the full But now this year
just a mindset change of us as like we've done it,
We've had our buys, our three buys are gone, We've
got eight games leading it to finals. Let's go after it.
(08:24):
Let's go get it, and that's what's bringing the confidence
and the boys around. Let's not hope and see if
we can stay in this fight. No, let's go after
the fight.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
See. My observation is there isn't a side in this
competition you can't beat yep, and you should feel that
going into it. Technically the only side is the Panthers,
which you didn't and you've got them again in a
couple of weeks. Is there something in that Panthers thing?
And I mean that would be psychological if you lost
twice going to the playoffs, that would be psychological, wouldn't it.
You'd have to get yourself a bit on that, wouldn't you.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, for sure. We look at these guys and they're
the big dogs. They're the ones we want to go after.
And it's on a day do we turn up being
like I hope I bring my best performance and having
someone like Fishing Outside who before they went on their
for premiership run, they they lost to the Roosters and
his biggest advice he gave us was we got to
the arena and we got bullied there. We weren't ready
(09:14):
for the arena, But now every day we practice about
being in the arena every day and having him there.
That's what we're feeding off. That's why I keeps saying
we want to go and take it. We've got to
go after it. And it starts this week with the Dragons.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
It's Fisher Harra's the meanest looking going.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
But it was when he's read a singler walking around
the gym and big arms, tattered, scary guye.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
You look at some of those guys, you man, they
must they're obviously nice guys, but they look like they
could finish you off without even looking at you. So
just just work me through. So my concerns the season
that was, But the Panthers won the Tigers. So you
thrash him last week, it was it last week whenever
it was, so you thresh them, they threshed you. Those
games that you have lost that you weren't supposed to lose.
(09:56):
What happens.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
I think at the time it's you know, you don't
want to put it all on one player. But we
had a we had a moment where we were trying
different combinations during those that year with Luke Metcalfe just returned.
We had to Mida Marlin Closer Attorney, where Shanew sort
of moved off with Tanner Boyd driving at the time.
So we look back at those days and say, I
think we just had a combination that we were trying.
(10:19):
And over the last weekend we found that combination that
works with us. We've got to Mido who's in the seat,
We've got Shanew who who's the opportunity finder, and then
you've got Fish and Aaron who punches the door down.
So I feel like once we find that combination and
this weekend, we've got a pretty pretty stacked team and
even our bench is awesome. So it's about finding the
(10:40):
right combination and just like I said, going with.
Speaker 1 (10:43):
And what about you, how you're handling this transition to
the media.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, it's interesting On Mike. I'm still trying to work
my way around it. I've got some good people around me.
You know, Sean Johnson, he's laying the way. See, he's
been really good. And like you, I've got Monty in
my corner. Is our monster beat them. And for me,
it's always been just trying to give enough. But I'll
give too much that you know other teams are taking
all the insights.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah yeah, yeah, but you're going to loosen yourself up
a bit in the media. I have to talk about personality.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
I have to. My brother's been pushing me a lot
to get into space and be more open minded about it.
But for me, it's all no action over everything, still learning.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
It's all enjoyable. Good on you mate, Nice to see
you appreciate it very much. Go well with Sky and
go well with If we don't talk Ingham, go well
with them Trinity next to year. Thank you so nice
to see Roger twoybaster Ship. For more from the Mic
