Will Deneslow: Feature Story News Europe Correspondent on the NATO summit in Turkey

Defence spending's looming large as NATO leaders meet in Turkey for the annual alliance summit. 

US President Donald Trump's already made headlines, reiterating he'd like the US to control Greenland and his disappointment with the lack of ally support for the Iran war. 

Our Defence Minister Chris Penk is also heading there for the NATO Defence Industry Forum, and meeting counterparts from allied countries. 

Feature Story News Europe Correspondent Will Deneslow told Mike Hosking NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte is trying to stress NATO is a collective. 

He says he compared the alliance to a football team, which can't rely on one star player.

NATO under one Turkey as you well aware you as
presidents arrived, usual collection of threats. Greenland's on the table,
troop withdraw could be real. Will Dinslow, European correspondent for
feature story News. He's at nightow and he's with us morning.

Is this just the Trump show or will other matters
be dealt with?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
President Trump looms hugely over this summit, and we've seen
that with his entrance. He was greeted with huge pomp
and ceremony from Resship Duwan, the Turkish leader. They had
a bilateral chat in which President Trump turned his attention.
When asked by questions from the press about whether the

United States has committed to NATO, he once again railed
against European allies, questioning whether they should keep control of
Greenland for example, once again retreating that he felt that
European allies aren't pulling their weight. So once again a
President Trump and his contentious relationship when it comes to
fellow NAT allies once again held large. But Mark Ruter,

(01:04):
NATO Sector General, is very keen to stress that NATO
allies are a collective. He made a World Cup comparison
He said that the NATO alliance is like a football team.
You can't just have an alliance based on one brilliant player.
It takes a collective. That is the message that NATO's
leadership is very much trying to hammer home at this
summit here in the Turkish capital and how.

Much time will be spent on Ukraine and will Zelenski
get a Zia defense that he wants so badly?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Well, He's president. Zelensky made a compelling address. He said
that Ukraine essentially has everything it needs with that one
caveat of air defenses. He urged European allies in particular
to do more to not just rely on Patriot missiles.
There's a US manufactured air defenses that have been so
valuable for Kiev over the past a few years. He

(01:53):
said that Europe needs to do more when it comes
to ramping up its own defense procurement. We've heard similar
messages from European leaders likes at Slavondo and European Commission
present saying that there needs to be more collaboration with
Ukraine when it comes to the industrial defense base. So
very much a strong talk of collaboration for coordination, but

(02:14):
of course what matters most for the Ukrainian people is
hard hardware and getting that to the people that need
it as quickly as possible. So at the moment it's
just rhetoric, and President z Lenski will certainly be hoping
that some of these words will be met with tangible
action as well.
