Well, for those who don't know about the incident in Catherine, NT,
police officers are currently trying to track down several offenders
involved in a brazen stolen car joy ride throughout the
town for up to eight hours overnight. Witnesses have told
three sixty group of people who looked to be up
to seven youths effectively held the town at ransom as
they drove a stolen black vaultswagon dangerously through Catherine. Police

have said due to the manner of the driving and
presence of traffic and pedestrians, officers did not engage the
vehicle despite the offenders attempting to provoke a police pursuit.
Investigators say they have heard and share the community's frustration
and did not want to stand by and watch the offenders. Instead,
they actively actively worked to identify and they are currently

looking and attempting to arrest them. They also hit out
at parents, saying that they have a critical role to play.
This behavior starts long before police become involved, and families
need to take responsibility for where their children are, who
they're with, and what they're doing. Anti Police have charged
a forty nine year old man in Alice Springs in

relation to a fatal road incident that occurred in Darwin
in February twenty twenty four, where a male was struck
by an oncoming vehicle and died as a result of
his injuries. Following what they called a complex investigation and
acting on recommendations from the coroner and the DPP, the offender,
who was also a pedestrian at the time of the

incident has been charged with one count of manslaughter. He's
been reminded in custody and is due to appear before
the Al Springs Local Court today. Northern Territory Police's newest
drug detection dog UNO has continued his impressive start on
the job, helping officers uncover almost half a kilogram of cannabis,
seventeen edged weapon and suspected stolen property during a targeted

operation in Pine Creek yesterday. Around midday, members from the
Catherine Dog Operations Unit, supported by several other units, conducted
a search warrant at a town camp. As officers entered
the property, a fifty one year old man was located
inside a camper van, with UNO deployed quickly providing several
positive indications, leading to police to locate and approximately four

hundred and fifty grands of cannabis, three grams of gold
nuggets believed to be the proceeds of crime, seventeen edged
weapons including three prohibited weapons, approximately seven hundred and eighty
dollars in cash, and items consistent with the supply of
illicit drugs. Fifty one year old Pine Creek man was
issued a notice to appear and bushfires nt is reminding

territories that many bushfires are preventable, following a number of
avoidable incidents already this top end bushfire season. The reminder
comes as a fire danger period is in effect for
the Carpenteria, East, Barkley, North and South regions, which include Darwin,
Catherine and TenneT Creek. Crews have responded to several fires
sparked by lawn mowers, while other incidents have been linked

to residents burning small household rubbish piles. And although these
fires can often start small, they can rapidly spread through
dry grass and quickly develop into larger incidents, requiring significant
rest sources to contain lot's happening.

incident for people in town. It sounds like the entire
town was just kind of watching this car do lap
after lap around the place. I mean, one video I
saw had someone say it's gone past their house twenty times,
and just the fact, like usually you see these kind
of vision on social media that it's the middle of

the night, that it's nighttime, but some of the videos
show this is broad daylight. So obviously there's a lot
of people on footpaths moving around on the street. So
you can understand from that aspect why pieces You Risk
Assessment said that they can't engage a pursuit, and then
it continued on throughout the night, so up to six
to eight hours. Man, that would have been so absolutely crazy.

I'd be really interested to hear from our listeners in Catherine.
I didn't think to us Trent to do with this,
obviously from what we're seeing from those text messages kids,
but interested to know what ages people think they were,
because it sort of sounds like some of the messages
that people are saying they're really quite young. Yeah yeah,
which is incredibly frightening. I mean, no matter what age,

it's incredibly frightening. But it's frightening in the sense that
you're thinking, how on earth are these kids driving around
and the danger to themselves and potentially other people.

And now hanging out of the window. I mean, witnesses
have said they saw up to seven youths and this
was a small car. And I thought it was really
interesting that Robin Carl mentioned that when she had asked
about what's going on in Catherine, that there appears to
be an increased number of these young people in town
for whatever reason. So you know, it'll be really interesting

to hear what the Chief Minister has said, because you know,
we have heard from Catherine residence over the past few
months that they have been extremely frustrated with what's going
on in the town and been told, effectively that the
stats don't back up anecdotal evidence. Now, you and I
have covered crime for many long time, and sometimes the
stats don't say that until it's far too late.

That's exactly right, and this vision that we saw from yesterday,
it reminds me of what we used to see in
Alice Spring Like people in Alice Springs, people in the
Northern Territory more broadly, will recall all of the issues
that we've covered in alice springs over the years and
kids in cars hooning around again, the danger to themselves,

the danger to others. I mean when you think just
yesterday we're reporting on a death or the death of
five people following one crash.

And that's not to mention that crash that occurred in
a stolen cart outside of Catherine when the driver died
and all the others run away.

I mean, it hasn't been immune over the years either.
I mean, there was that incredible vision that the police
released of that troopie driving directly at police vans down
the center of Catherine, colliding. I think they collided with it.

they're not like strangers to this in the past, where

there's clearly some level of increase.
