Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we've been talking quite a bit about petrol prices
and even after I got off here yesterday, my phone
was blowing up about the cost of petrol. Joining me
in the studio is Ben Haythorpe from AAANT the Advocacy
and Well he works in advocacy and community engagement.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning to you, Ben, Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Hi you really good. Great to have you in this studio.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Nice to be back now.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
I know you caught up with Dan from Breakfast a
couple of days ago to talk about these petrol prices.
But the lay of the lands changed a little bit
over the recent days, hasn't ash.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
The last twenty four hours. Can I use the term
roller coaster because that's what's happening with petrol prices here
in Darwen. You know we've seen a massive spike with
probably six or seven retailers, and you know we're pushing
prices of close to two dollars And now you know,
I checked my phone fifteen minutes ago and the story's changed.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
It's really interesting. I mean, dodgy. I can think of
a few different words for it, but I'll use so
you don't need to now. I mean, when you look
at the terminal gate price for Darwin, for your own
lettered Friday last week it was a dollar sixty point
five today a dollar sixty six point four. There's really
nothing justifying like a thirty percent or a thirty cent increase,

(01:11):
is there?

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You've said it? Yeah, that's exactly right. You know. I
think there was a little bit of panic buying and
perhaps a little bit of opportunistic selling. You know, there
was queues out the front of some petrol stations earlier
on in the week in Darwin. But yeah, if you
go pass now, there's no cues anymore. And I think
people are sort of, you know, taking stock a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Ben, do you reckon we're going to see those petrol
prices fluctuate based on what is happening in the Middle East.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Well, the interesting part of this story is and a
lot of people are worried about the Middle East, and
you know, because it is such an important part of
where crude oil does come from. So twenty percent of
the world's oil comes through through the straits of holl Mars,
but eighty percent of the world's oil comes from other places.
And a lot of our crude oil comes from our
near neighbors, like in Indonesia and Malaysia, and so you know,

(02:02):
I think keep that in mind because there is still
supply out there. Yeah. Sure, things are going to be
a little bit disrupted, you know, while this war is
going on, but you know, look at the long term
view and hopefully we're still going to have plenty of
crude or coming our way.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
A couple of things that were raised with us yesterday
by listeners. First off, two people got in contact with
me yesterday and said, Katie, the advertising board outside where
I went to fill my car up, one person said
was at a certain price, then when they went to
the bowser it was at a higher price. I mean
that is not allowed, is that?

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah? I would have serious concerns if that is a
common thing that's happening here in Darwin, because yeah, I'd
not totally okay with the laws, but I always say
that's virginally illegal.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, well, I'd encourage that person to get in contact
with Consumer Affairs or the a Triple C because that
is dodgy as that should not be happening.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
I agree, I agree.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Now, then the other thing that people were contacting me
about yesterday was the ant app crashing or something going
on with the AA N T app.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
What was happening there, Yeah, or actually a couple of
things actually, but yeah, what happens with the A N
T app is every day a new bar code is generated,
and that gets generated at midnight. And there was a
period I think from midnight till nine am till the
people got back into the office that they realized that
the new barcode hadn't been generated. But I do believe

(03:24):
that has been fixed. The second issue, and this relates
to all of this, is the numbers of people that
were accessing that app tripled on that day. So yeah,
that also caused a few issues as well, But I
do believe that that's all resolved. But yeah, if there
are still people having issues, you feel free to contact
the A and T.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah, and Ben, what I mean, what's your advice for
people today around filling up their cars? I mean, some
people are sort of freaking out and they're going out
there and they're you know, they're wanting to fill their
cars up. What do we need to do?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, you know, I'm driving around on half a tank
at the moment, and to be honest, I haven't filled
up meact.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
I was thinking I was a bit lazy by not
doing it.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, so look, I guess, you know, maybe I'm too
much of a glass half full type of guy. Yeah,
I don't see the real need to do it. And
the other good news in this is we do have
quite cheap fuel here and Darwin the Eastern States, you know,
their boom has sorry, their spike has lasted way longer
than ours. So they're paying two twenty over in Sydney,

(04:25):
Melbourne and Brisbane. Now apparently, so our fuel is you know,
very good, very competitive.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yep, and we I mean I've just started to sort
of keep an eye back on the my fuel lap
as well, and I'll continue to do that and read
those prices out for our listeners over the next few days.
But I guess you just got to go to where
it's cheaper.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Look, definitely, you know, that's the real power of information
and the power of using our wallets. You know, we
can with a few clicks on our phone work out
that hey, if we go one hundred meters down the road,
we're going to save twenty cents a leader. Now that
I'll be encouraging all motorists to do that, you know, shopper,
use the power of your wallet. And as I said
to him, if you find a cheap fuel place, going

(05:05):
buy a cup of coffee off them too, because they
make money out of coffee as well. And it's a
good way to support those those doing the right thing,
that are doing the right thing, because that's.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
A big part of it is you do want to
support those that are doing the right thing by the
customers exactly well, Ben Haythorpe from the A n T.
Always great to catch up with you. Thank you so
much for having a chat with us this morning.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Great thanks Katie, thank you
