studio is Detective Sergeant Tim Hearley. Good morning to you, Tim, Katy.
Good to have you on the show. It sounded like
it was pretty wild scenes yesterday afternoon in arresting this
bloke around the rapid Greek area, some pretty serious tactics
needed to well take him down. Tell us what happens.

Yeah, so the backstory I think you covered off on it.
But on Tuesday, this active parole target, we attempted to
arrest him in Casarina. He jumped into a motor vehicle
and took off dangerously and he actually clipped one of
the members, pinching him against the side of another vehicle.
So fortunately he only sustained soft tissue bruising.

So then from.

There, bloody frightening I was.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, from there we really are ramped up our efforts.
Our Fugitive Task Force and TRG took carriage of the
arrest plan. From there, we formulated a plan and sort
of pinned him to an address in Karama. When we
went to that address, he again fled in a vehicle,
driving through a neighbor fence. So wow, that was around

ten am, So you know, he was exhibiting all these
signs of a man who did not want to be
taken into custody.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Yeah, it sounds like it. It sounds as though the police,
well you guys did everything he could to track him
down yesterday. How many officers were required?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, we throughout the day there was up to forty
eight times of course, so that we had all of TRG,
we had all the fugitive. There was various other members
in general duties and traffic and whatnot, so that the
amount of resources we threw out this was was pretty heavy.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, and it sounds as though he was dangerous right,
like he's clipped a police officer, He's driven through the
neighbour's fence to be able to get away. Eventually the
Northern Territory Police, you guys had to use a land
cruiser to stop him. Sounds like a pretty drastic move.
Tell us what you.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Did, yes, So, so in relation to that, we come
up with a number of plans of how we want
to resolve this and how we intend to get this
guy peacefully and without angel of the public. The method
we use was probably one of our least preferred options,
given it was two o'clock we're in a built up area.
He was driving dangerously without any police.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Involved around school pickup exactly.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
So that that form part of our decision.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
The approval went through for it's called a tactical vehicle
in addiction, which is basically police ramming the car. So
that's done by train member TRG member. They've rammed this car,
essentially needed to immobilize it, which they did. They got
out of the car and they further shot a front
tire out, which does sound extreme, But was.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
It a normal kind of gun?
Speaker 2 (02:41):
What's the go So it's not the normal gun that
would police officers would carry on the hip. So this
is this is the TRG guys, they're trained. It's basically
a firearm that is used for that purpose called a
breaching shotgun. So basically that just puts a hole in
the tire and makes the vehicle undrivable.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Him tell me, once you then apprehended him, or before
you apprehended him, I understand that he was threatening to
well he pulled himself in petrol.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, so once the vehicle got immobilized, you know, this
is a guy who did not want to get caught.
He's put himself in the backseat, of the vehicle and
poured himself, sorry, poured fuel over himself. Obviously, that limited
our options. We had to stand back. The guys on
the ground tried to negotiate with him, which which wasn't

getting anywhere, so eventually they had to breach breach the
vehicle by smashing the window in and basically dragging him
out of the car.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Tim was he Do you believe that he was impacted
by drugs or something, because this is very strange behavior.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Look, we'll certainly be alleging that he was. Throughout the
day he was driving under the influence of drugs, and
that's consistent with the manner of driving in the vehicle.
There was a trafficable quantity of methamphetamine, there was an
ice pipe, there were various weapons, including knives. We're talking
about a dangerous man who needed to be taken off

the street, and like you said, we're just thankful we
got him before school pickup time.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Well, and sounds as though as well well from what
I've read and what I've heard, he was only released
from prison not that long ago.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, so it served three years of a five year
sentence and he was released in February last Friday on
the twenty ninth, the Anti Parole Board they.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Revoked his parole and then at that point in time.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
It was referred to the Fugitive Task Force and then
obviously the preliminary quires and things just really escalated from
Tuesday onwards.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Do you believe that he's like, do the police believe
that he's been offending you know throughout the time that
he sort of you know that he has been on
bail or.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Look, I'm not sure of the circumstances and what led
to the parole board provoking his parole, but yes, certainly
once we were making attempts to to get him, he
was continuing to offend.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yes, yeah, gee wiz, So tell me what's next? Has
he been charged or you know, what are the next
steps from your perspective?
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
So what we've done the parole has been revoked, which
is basically I do not pass goes straight back to jail.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
So that's where he is from today.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
We've got investigation teams that will work on all the
offending that's taken place, that will all be collated into
a file and he'll certainly have you know, the member
dangerous driving, drug offenses, weapon offenses as an absolute minimum,
and whatever other offenses are detected along the investigation.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Well, I'll tell you what, very lucky that you're able
to apprehend him before school pick up, you know that
time of the afternoon. The last thing the police want
is a dangerous criminal out around the place allegedly, you know,
armed with weapons and with drugs inside his car. Like
it's pretty shocking stuff exactly.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
And that and that form part of our plan, and.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
That was you know, the tactical vehicle in addiction, that
was part of the reason why we adopted that method
to get him off the street.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Well, it sounds as though you guys did some hard
work yesterday to be able to get him back into custody.
And yeah, no doubt a bit more coming his way
by the sounds of things. Yeah, Tim, an interesting day
for you and for the rest of the team of

Yeah, absolutely, and the TRG guys they did a lot

was a real team effort to get this guy off
