Well, let's talk about something wonderful that is happening, and
we know that cricket and sport lovers are going to
be excited this week with the return of Test cricket
to Darwin for the first time in twenty two years.
When the men's Australian team lines up against Bangladesh from Thursday.
The squad's already touched down and locals had the opportunity
to meet their heroes at a fan event yesterday at

the Waterfront and the head of Cricket NT, Nick Winter,
joins me on the line.

Good morning, Nick, Good morning Katie. How are you.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm very well Nick, How are you guys? I hear
that it went off yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, we're doing well. There's a few tired soldiers after. Yes,
that was a big day. But yeah, I'd say about
fifteen hundred people turned out yesterday, got to meet the team.
The team were amazing in their time, just giving up
to the daring community. So it was the perfect start
to a big week.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Oh, how wonderful. I bet you had kids there, adults there,
everybody who's just pumped to have the cricket back.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, it was a great turnout. We had mums dad's kids,
our South Asian Bangladesh community came out in full forth
so the lines were very long for some some of
the big Australian players. But yeah, across the board, there's
lots of activities. Is a really nice day down at
the waterfront.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
And how excited are you about this match that it's
finally finally rolled around?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Excited but also nervous. There's a lot of anticipation for
the match. Having a full strength Australian team is a
wonderful honor for Dahl and just to host the team.
So we're all looking forward to it. I think we're
all quietly hoping for a really strong and competitive game
and just the ability for dah and community to see

the australian's and Bangladesh men's team in action.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, I reckon it's going to be absolutely awesome. Nick
tell Us, I know the Australian squads already touchdown. You
mentioned that a moment ago. Tell us some of the
names that people are going to be really excited about
that you know people are gonna want to see in
action later this week.

Yeah. Absolutely, it couldn't have been the stronger Australian team.
That's what we're most excited about. So I think when
we look back in ten to fifteen years time, people
will talk about Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Mitchell Stark.
As I said Travis Head, he just won the Alan
Border Medal for the second time in a row on
Friday night, so local Jake Weatherill first Territorium playing back

in the territory. I think there's so many good news
stories that, yeah, it's pretty cool to have the best
of the best here.

Has Bangladesh touchdown?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yes, yeah, they played a trial game last week. They
played a three Yeah, they played a three day trial
game against the Cricket Australia eleven team, which was effectively
an Australia A team. So they've been training hard behind
the scenes. They've got training today as well, so they're
ready to go. They're just getting acclimatized and used to
the conditions and yeah, they'll be ready to go first

ball Thursday.

And have they named their team as well?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
They've got a squad. They've got a squad, so both
both teams will name their final playing eleven at the
coin toss on Thursday. Australia's only picked thirteen, so I
think you can almost predict who's going to play, which
I'm sure the media pundits are already doing. But Bangladesh
has a bigger squad given their touring, so it's a
bit harder to predict.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah, right, but it's going to be a star studded
lineup as well, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, absolutely their full strength. I think globally they continue
to rise in their talent. Bangladesh is such a big
cricketing nation, as is all the South Asian countries, so yeah,
a lots on the line for them as well.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Now I know that Josh Hazelwood's back almost a year
since his last match in July last year. How's he
been looking.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Well, he's literally running into bowl and I'm watching him
outside the window at the same time. So you've got
the four big Australian quick bowlers who are all running
in off their full proper setups this morning. So just
seeing them in action, they're all all really really big
human beings. They're all highly athletic. So to have Josh,
to have Mitchell Stark, to have Pat Cummens, Scott Bowlin's

waiting in the background. So as a form of fast ball,
I'm quite excited to work in action actually, and.

Pat Cummins he's fit, he's good to play.
Speaker 2 (04:21):

He spoke last night at the Westpac function, so it
was great for our community to hear from the men's
Test captain. You know, as I said before, he's a
generational player, so super exciting to have Pat here. He
looks like he's ready to go as well.

And who do you reckon is going to be the
ones to watch from Bangladesh.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Linton dark he's their best player. He's a batter. I
dare say they're going to turn to him for experience
that They had a fast ball called Rana who is injured,
so Linton Das is going to have to do some
heavy lifting, I think, especially against those fast balls that
I just mentioned. But yeah, across the board, it just
takes one player in cricket. I think that's the beauty
of It just takes one player and you can sort

of build a team performance around that. So yeah, fingers
cross the Bangladesh team put in a strong performance. It'll
it will take a lot for them to overcome a
full strength Australian team, but I think we're all just
hoping for a competitive performance.

Nick, tell me how's t Io Stadium and the pitch looking.
Is it all ready to go?
Speaker 2 (05:22):
It's all ready to go, even across the road at
De c Marara Arena. But both venues have come up
absolutely superbly. The curating team, led by Jake Pavlich Enter Cricket,
has just done a sensational job. It's a lot of
time and effort. They've been working around the clock, but yes,
Thursday Thursday will showcase their hard work. I do think
(05:46):
there's still going to be a little bit of nerves
when you're having a drop in pitch, Wiket. There's obviously
some a bit of scrutiny from the last Australian summer around.
Some of the pitch is only going for two days,
so that there is pressure doubt. But Jack, Jake and
his team couldn't have worked any harder or have done
a better job.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Now, tell me how are the ticket sales going at
these points?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Ticket sales good? Yeah, yeah, ticket sales good. Gave the
CEO sits in them, so I don't get day to
day access to them. But yeah, I think I think
they're looking quite strong for the first three or four days. Obviously,
Day five is a little bit riskier with how long
a test match can go, but I guess the call
out is just for anyone sort of listening is to
get to the game as best as possible. We think
(06:32):
it's a huge thing to have the test team here,
so if we can get as many dial and locals,
that would be great. I know our interstate numbers are
really really strong. Last time I spoke to you, almost
forty percent of ticket sales we're from interstate. So a
great thing to also attract people to the territory to
come and do some of the sites and the wonderful
(06:52):
tours that you can do while ye're up here watching
someon cricket spot on.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I think it's such a wonderful thing, you know, to
have that sport base to.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah on hundred Yeah, I think that's the aim in
any event. You're you're able to attract and provide a
pathway for local territories, but also how can you showcase
the best of the territory to interstate and also international visitors.
I think we can't discount the ability of cricket as
a global game to attract the international visitors. So look
looking forward to hosting everyone on birthday.
