Well, it might be some beautiful weather in Catherine, but
unfortunately not great behavior. Yesterday afternoon and into the evening.
We've spoken a lot about the crime issue in Catherine
and it looks like things got a whole lot worse
last night. Joining us live on the line is Strength
with good morning to you, Trent.

What happened in the late hours of yesterday av oh
and overnight.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Out of control? The town was held ransom by six
or seven kids in a stolen motor vehicle driving through
places where there were up to thirty to forty kids
and families training for different activities, for sports. They just
drove on the wrong side of the road, they were

driving through parks, just absolute nuisance to society and not
a single thing was done about it.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
You are joking, because Strength, from the vision that i'd seen,
I could see cyclists, a cyclist out on their bike
like the sun was still up, and you know, these
sort of off to the side of the road. You
could see some other poor bugger in their car thinking
what the hell's going on? You know, it's a danger
to themselves. But as you've just touched on, then if
there's kids at training and stuff, families around the place.

That's horrifying.

Yeah, they were driving around our sports area where there's
you know, up to four or five different groups training
for different acurities, as well as our skate park where
there's young kids and families there as well. But yeah,
I mean this started about two thirty three o'clock had
it didn't end till about nine o'clock last night.

Now, we did ask for a statement or some info
from the Northern Territory Police. Now they said that the
vehicle was observed multiple times within the Catherine township, several
youths hanging out of the windows and they reckoned due
to the manner of driving in the presence of traffic
and pedestrians, that police did not engage the vehicle. Now,
I'm very conscious here. I know the police have got

a bloody tough job. But fact is, if a pedestrian
is hit by this car, there'd be a lot of
questions being asked.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
I agree, and look, I'm with you where I feel
for the police because they're in a situation whereas if
they engage a vehicle and one of these kids die, well,
their life is over as far as the lawyers will
just take them to the absolute cleaners for every single
thing that they can. So how do they do their
job if they're handstrung by things like this where if

a stolen car is driving around town presenting more of
a danger to society than it is to the kids
in the car, why can't they engage it? And what
laws are stopping them? And why the hell do they exist?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah, this is the thing, you know, like you just
everybody needs to be safe and if someone's breaking the law,
well they need to be stopped.
Speaker 2 (02:46):

What's been like the reaction from locals, particularly last night
and everybody that was at the sport. You know what
are people saying around town?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
We are done, Katie, We are so over this. It's
just beyond an absolute joke. Now the back of the
Finch Cafe now where coffee with a cop is going on.
These things usually get about three or four people to them.
You can't get a car park in the car park
at the Finch at the moment, and there's that many
people that they're spilling outside. This just shows the anger

and the frustration of all of Catherine and how sick
to death they are of this shit that just constantly happens.
And then we'll get a surgeon, police, we'll get a
surge in something and all of a sudden, you know,
things are quiet down, and then it'll go back to normal,
and then it'll happen again. It's just a revolving door
that never ends. And people are absolutely done with this shit.

And the thing is it's going to end up being
society taking it into their own hands.

Yeah, which is frightening, right, That's a.

Frightening and that's what we don't want to happen. But
the thing is, if you can watch that car for
six hours on social media updates, what is stopping someone
from jumping in their car and t bone and that
thing to stop it? Because nothing else was going to happen.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, and that's a concern, you know. You think that's
when shit gets really crazy, and that's the last thing
that anybody wants. You know, you'll end up with riots
and god knows what happening in town. So that's the
last thing that anybody.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
And the thing is, though the town is at a
breaking point where we've put up with this for long enough.
I had the manager from McDonald's in the shop the
other day trying to figure out how he can buy
oc spray for his employees because they are at midnight
running to their cars, locking the doors, because all of
these little kids are running out of the bush trying

to steal their car as they're running to it. Like
I've seen the CCTV footage of that. That is just
absolute crap. It's like every person that finishes a job
here after midnight is a target.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
That makes me feel really bloody sad because I don't know,
I got it. It's irrelevant whether they're young or older people.
But working at macas is like a ride of passage
when you're a young person. And so then thin thinking
about some kid that's seventeen years old getting in their
car racing there as fast as they can, or whether
they're old at whatever age they are, like, that's just

horrorfule it is.

And this this individual backed the car out and just
had to absolutely gas it out of the car park
because they were swarming him. And if you had to
hit one of them, I guarantee you I know who's
in trouble.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yep, that's exactly the right I'm trying to car jack him.

That hits them, And that's where out of the society
at the moment. The criminals have more rights yep than
what we do. What do we want to see happen
to do anything?

I know? I know, mate, what do you want to
see happen?

Because we've spoken to the mayor on a number of
occasions about the situation in Catherine. You know, we've been
told by the Chief Minister that they've searched people search
police in at different times. But what do locals want
to see happen. I've got the Chief Minister on on
Monday and I will put it to her.

We need more resources, more people, more boots on the ground,
and real outcomes. If you do something wrong, you need
to be punished. You don't get to go to some
little bush camp and get taught how to do this
and how to do that. If you're a multiple offender,
you don't get another go mate, you're done. You need
to be dealt with as a criminal because that's what

you are.

And Trent, you know you like that. I want to
really make it clear to anybody listening in Darwin who
doesn't know you. You know you are not somebody who
bitches and winges about this stuff all the time. You
are somebody who speaks to us literally when there is
a real concern around town. You are somebody who over
the years, who's done a lot yourself to try to

help with these issues that you're experiencing in Catherine. But
it sounds like you and a heck of a lot
of other people are absolutely exasperated.

We are, o, Katie. I've lost the will to do
anything about it because it's just never ending. It's like,
you know, I put my hand up to be an
to do this, to take on kids, employees, help them
outdo all this sort of stuff, and then there's just
the next wave of them that comes through. It just
never seems to end. And you might be able to hear,
but I'm beyond frustrated with this, Katie. We are losing

employees in the town, left, right and center because essential
places that need employees don't have them because they're too
scared to go to work.

That's just absolute garbage. Like honestly, Trent, tell me, you
know from your perspective or from what you know, do
you know if they're local kids, do you know if
they were in from community? What's the guy?
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Well, this is the other thing about it, Katie. When
an incident like this happens, the public gets left in
the dark afterwards, so the rumor mill is obviously rife
and Catherine, we know stuff before the police do very quickly.
But as far as actual public and true knowledge goes,
it ends. As soon as you know they crash a car.
We don't find out anything after that. We don't know

who they are, where they're from, what happened to them.
It's just radio silence. And then the same incident will
happen a few weeks later and you'll hear a rumor that, oh,
that was old mate who did it last week. He
got released on bail because you know, the judge didn't
see him as a threat to society or whatever. It's
just a never ending story, yep. And there needs to

be public knowledge on who the kids are, where they
were from, and what has happened to them, because that's
the clarity that the society needs to know that in
the back end, our justice system is doing its job well.

messaged through and said, pretty simple, change the legislation so
that deaths or injuries from pursuits are not treated as

I would think that that's already on the lips of
most people in government at the moment, that police need
the powers to do their job without being crucified if
they engage something like this. I saw this car last night.
I had my two kids in the car with me
and my wife. We were coming home from dinner. I

saw this thing go up the main street doing about
eighty ninety kilometers an hour with four kids hanging out
the windows. You know, up the main street of Catherine,
which is a forty kilometer our zone. There's pedestrians everywhere there. Yeah,
at what point does it end?
