Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, last week we told you about this story that

(00:03):
was being reported on the ABC regarding the new Shanghai
Chinese restaurant in Catherine. It was rocked by a pre
door machete attack and a car jacking. It was a
terrifying incident. And well, joining us in the studio is
Nashe Cassi Yann, who is indeed the owner of the
restaurant and also one of the employees there. ERU, good

(00:24):
morning to you both. How are you good morning? Really
good to have you in the studio. I appreciate your
time now, Nashe. First off, this sounds like it was
a truly scary situation that took place at your business.
Your chef Brian was threatened with a knife and he
was robbed. How's he going.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
At this moment in time. He's actually out in Sydney, IK.
He's packed up his bags and said, you know what,
I've had enough of Catherine because this was the third
incident since January for him.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Yeah right, So tell me what else had he endured
over that short period of time.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Okay, So on the first second day we opened, his
car was parked outside and little kids just walked up
to his car and jumped on it and literally broke
the windscreen. We could see all of that on the
cameras and it's just horrific. Yeah, we were fortunate enough
to know quite a few people on the on Catherine

(01:21):
Terrace who were able to point out to who the
kids were. And then we just handed over the CCTV
stuff to the police. And we don't know what's happened
to that particular person that did that, but I'm hoping something.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, hopefully there's a consequence to that action.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
And then the second part of it is because of
where we're located, we get a lot of the kids
clombing up onto the roof and they start throwing stones
at the cars. I'm sure you've heard people complain about definitely. Yeah,
so that happens around about where we are as well.
And then this particular incident, it was the first thing
in the morning for him. They were going in to

(01:59):
do the foot preps for the day and as he
was opening the back gate, some kids just ran up
to him. I wouldn't know whether there's kids or adults,
but they had machetes and knives and they literally just
screamed at him and so give us the keys, give
us the phone.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
And yeah, and so justifiably he has had enough, like
he's you know, that's that's the kind of thing that
shakes you to your core. Really, it's frightening stuff. And
it doesn't matter how old these people are. It's bloody scary. Yes,
incredibly scary now, Eric for you in terms of you know,
going to work each day, Like, how frightening has it

(02:39):
become with some of these young people that are getting
around town, will running a mark doing the wrong thing?

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yes, but fortunately I haven't full face on the scared things. Yeah,
since I came to castlein yep.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
But I was shot in this yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, Look, it's a worry. There is no other way
to put it. Now, Nash, tell me, you know, what
do you think has it been an uptick in crime?
Do you think over the last sort of couple of months.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
I would like to say yes, But then it's a
double edged sword because this upticking crime hasn't just happened
over the last couple of months. It's been a gradual
increase for a while. I can't exactly put a number
on it to say it would have started whether it
was at the beginning of the wet season or just
before that, but then at that time, my focus was

(03:41):
somewhere else. So everything that's going on, it's not just
our restaurant that's been affected. The shops across the street.
Nikki from the coffee club.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah, she's had a terrible situation her, yes.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
And the servile next door to us, a shell bp ORTR.
All the businesses in town are pretty much getting affected.
And at the end of the day, what people don't
realize is the cost of the shutdowns and the repair
cost and everything else that's on the back end of this.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
It's so shy at the moment. Is New Shanghai still
open at the moment or are you closed at this point?

Speaker 2 (04:15):
We are closed at the moment because everybody when this
whole happened, we were already as you can imagine, Catherine,
it's pretty tough to retain stuff in the first place,
and this incident happened, everybody got scared, and obviously with
the head chef who's gone away. And what's really sad
for us anyway, is when we actually acquired the restaurant,

(04:37):
it was to try and keep this place alive. It's
been an operation for maybe twenty twenty two years, and
most of the customers are all locals. When you look
at the numbers, it's not really a dry season pea.
You know that, you know, it's the locals are the
ones that support that business. And when we got it,
we made sure we maintained the recipe and everything else

(04:58):
the same to make sure that Catherine does lose out
on that. Right now with us being closed and whether
we will have the opportunity to reopen in time or
you know, it's really tough to sort of like gauge
where we're.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
What do you think, like, what do you want to do?
I mean, I assume that you want to reopen, but
you want to make sure that your staff, that you
that everybody is safe, that's correct.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
One of the things that the police, or at least
were the member for Catherine was generous enough to jump
on board and say, Okay, we're going to try and
help to improve the security situation around here. That would
entail returning one of the mobile cameras that's there. And
but my question is, why do we only have you know,

(05:41):
that particular mobile camera. Why do we not have more
than just one or two in the town If we
have so many hotspots for all of this, I'm sure
there's a warehouse somewhere with a whole bunch of mobile
cameras just in storage somewhere. Why can't we put them
up in all these places at least safeguard.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Try and sort something out that's correct. Yesterday we actually
caught up with the Catherine Mayor Joanna Holden, who's revealed
that there's been a discussion regarding the establishment of a
round table to come up with some solutions to tackle
the issues of crime. Is that something that you would
like to see.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Happen, Yes, definitely, So I mean, should that happen, I
would like to also be on that table because I
believe it ties into what I do outside of on
in the restaurant, within the construction space, especially within the
remote housing accommodation and provision, and what we've been trying

(06:35):
to do as a business is to create culturally appropriate housing,
as you could say, because there's a lot of studies
that we've actually done in terms of trying to re
evaluate what the changes are that we can make to
the current government standard house model. But that's a conversation

(06:56):
for another day.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Well, and I guess you know around title as well,
to have every already at that table talking about some
solutions to try and really move forward and to work
this out. Like, Catherine's a wonderful place, it is, and
everybody wants to stay living there. You want to be
able to run your business there, you want to be
able to enjoy life. But when you're worried about your safety,
it becomes really difficult to do that, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yes, it does, Yeah, it does, and it's it's such
a shame. Like you said, Catherine is so wonderful and
in fact, the whole Antea as a whole, it is wonderful.
But then it's situations like this that make everybody sort
of like reassessed to go is this where we want
to be? We want to raise our kids and things
like that. You know, it's pretty tough.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
How long have you lived in Catherine?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
I they in casting for fifty.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Daies and and you know, do you want to stay
living there?

Speaker 4 (07:51):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah? But are you worried about that safety element?

Speaker 3 (07:55):
You want to sort it? Yes, especially because I am
from Japan is very safe fresh so yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
Yeah, and as.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
A young woman that's moved here from Japan as well,
you know you want to be safe and you're exactly
the kind of person that we want living in Australia
and living in Catherine, and you know, we need skilled,
wonderful workers here and if people don't feel safe.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
It's really tough.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yes, well, look, I appreciate you both coming into the
studio and having a chat with me this morning. We
are going to be catching up with the Northern Territory
Police Commissioner tomorrow, so I'm keen to talk a little
bit more to him as well about some of the
work that might be happening in Catherine to try to
keep territorians safe and to try and really sort some
of the issues of crime. So thank you so much

(08:44):
both of you for having a chat with me this morning.
I really appreciate, really appreciate your time. Thank you.
